A Very Hollywood Halloween
If only a superhero would come down, save us all, and end the strike! Happy belated Halloween! SAG-AFTRA has been on strike for over 100 days. As part of the strike, SAG-AFTRA members are not allowed to promote anything TV or movie-related. SAG members received costume guidelines ahead of the spooky holiday that said your favorite movie and TV characters are off-limits for SAG members, influencers, and SAG hopefuls. P. Diddy either missed the memo, didn’t care, or thought his message was more important. Not only did he dress up as one of the highest-grossing characters in Hollywood history, but he also produced a short film parodying the character’s biggest blockbuster. Tune in now to hear all of our thoughts on the good, the bad, and the ugly of this “Very Hollywood Halloween!” Co Hosts: Gaelyn Smith (@gsmittyyyy) and Caleb McDonald (@calebsubtitles) Executive Producer: Ayanna Costley @ayannacostley Co-Producer: Gaelyn Smith Edited by: Lewis Myers (@modestbroken) PA/Graphics by: Laura McDonald (@lauramichellemcdonald)

Hollywood is home to undervalued staff and seems to close its doors to anyone who speaks out against unjust incidents. Tune in as we explore this topic deeper.

Yes, the very thing we love- even aspire to be apart of has problems, and we can acknowledge that. In Maureen Ryan's book Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood, she lays out the many issues in Hollywood and how they have led to cycles of abuse and irreparable harm.
Over the next few weeks we will be discussing stories, structures, and notable figures in Hollywood that Ryan highlights in her book as examples of why things can not remain as they are. This week we tackled Chapter 1 and 2, so it’s not too late to catch up!

Episode 7 features a special guest, Abigail J. Covington! With her passion for creating discourse about issues that affect underrepresented identities, and knowledge of all things Black in media, Abigail and Gaelyn’s text messages about #loveisblind sparked this week’s topic: the addictive and messy world of Reality TV! The group discusses the history and sub-genres of unscripted television. They dig into the complicated reality of being Black on reality television. And of course, we circled all the way back to the slap heard ‘round the world!
The NSTH team would like to acknowledge that this episode is being released a week late out of respect for the tragedy that was the shooting at Robb Elementary last week. Although this episode was recorded before the tragedy, we did not feel that promoting our new episode was the appropriate course of action. We send our thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families and urge our elected officials to make a change so that this never happens again.
We hope this episode brings some light into your day!
