Episode 10 - Edible-electronics and CVs

Episode 10 - Edible-electronics and CVs

Tune in for the 10th and final (sort of) episode of Not Only Pipetting. (Don't worry we'll be back for a Season 2!)

In this, our last guest interview of the season, you'll get to meet Noemí as she talks to Àlex (the gym bro) and Ana about edible materials. Specifically, they'll be discussing edible electronics, why they're used, what they are, and how they work. You'll also hear within a variety of great advice, for example on how to write your CV; something every budding scientist has needed at some point.

After a PhD in Material Sciences, Noemí got her first post-doctoral position in Italy. In the interview, you'll hear her talk about the importance of giving yourself time and space to think about what you really want when making big steps like this in your scientific career.

We finish the season as we started, focusing not just on the "pipetting" itself but the real people behind it. Within the episode you'll find out about Noemí's hobbies, and how she balances time between them and a busy scientific career.

As always we hope you enjoy and thank you for listening to us throughout our first season!

Episode 9 - Industry and Insight

Episode 9 - Industry and Insight

Episode 9 of Not Only Pipetting. Join Carmen and Alex, the Gym Bro, as this time they interview Elisabeth a "pipetter" who made the switch from academia to industry. You'll get to hear lots about her interesting insights into the environment of research in industry and the key differences as opposed to academic research.

Within, Carmen, Alex, and Elisabeth chat about the advantages that a job in industry can offer in terms of the working lifestyle, performing research that is potentially closer to the patients themselves, and many other aspects! You'll also get to hear an interesting discussion about Elisabeth's pathway, how she made the trip through a PhD into an industry role, and what the different entry points are.

Finally, as ever you'll get to know more about Elisabeth herself, who she is outside of a working day in industry, and what hobbies she uses to occupy the time afforded by an industry work-life balance.

Enjoy!

Episode 8 - Teaching and Yellow-cards

Episode 8 - Teaching and Yellow-cards

The next episode of Not Only Pipetting is here. This time you'll be meeting Tom, flown in to Barcelona all the way from England to be on the podcast! In his interview with of course Alex (not the only Brit this time) and Carmen, you'll get to hear about his new career as a Teaching Assistant.

This episode is for anyone thinking about making a move to teaching and also anyone coming close to finishing a course at University who thinks that the academic research pathway isn't for them. Here Tom talks about his move into the teaching profession and how he is finding it so far, as well as having a very important discussion about why we need to get more people interested in educating the next generations.

As always with Not Only Pipetting, you'll also get to hear more about Tom and his lifestyle outside of teaching, involving running and working as a referee! You might be surprised, or not, to find that Tom utilises very similar techniques when dealing with both grown adult footballers and his students!

Tune in to find out more about Tom's journey to teaching people about pipettes rather than using them himself!

Episode 7 - Communication and Empathy

Episode 7 - Communication and Empathy

Tune in for Episode 7 to meet Elena Meléndez, currently working in the communications department of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine in Barcelona.

You’ll get to hear about an alternative career possibility to post-doctoral research, one which Elena embarked on some months ago after finishing a PhD in cell reprogramming and simply being honest with herself.

Should science communication be a mandatory skill for a scientist? What is the best way to engage people in science? How should we measure the impact of an outreach activity? These and many more questions will be discussed through the conversation with the incredibly kind and inspiring Elena, a nature lover (or just not a city fan) and a character worth meeting!!

If you’re in high school especially, you should definitely check out the CrazyAboutBiomedicine program that Elena helps to organise!!

Episode 6 - Beer and Rugby

Episode 6 - Beer and Rugby

In the next episode in the series, meet Matteo, a man interested in music and sports. Despite the episode title, this doesn't just mean he watches a lot of sports on TV and likes a drink, it's all far more interesting than that! Within the episode you'll get to know Matteo, his research into yeast and fermentation, and how he is utilising supercomputers to further our knowledge in this area. You'll also get to hear about rugby, not just the game, but about another podcast that Matteo works on about it! Interviewing today were Alex (The Brit) and Mrinalini. This means that in order to avoid an all out fight, there wasn't too much discussion about rugby, the Brits and the Italians being fierce rivals of course!

Alongside this of course you'll get to the heart of how Matteo balances his life in science with his passions in rugby and music. Finding this balance is an important aspect for anyone working in science, but also generally! Hear Matteo's advice on how to keep this balance and stay sane and healthy.

Enjoy!

Pilot - The People Behind the Podcast

Pilot - The People Behind the Podcast

Welcome to Not Only Pipetting! In this podcast we aim to get to the heart of the people behind the pipettes for our listeners. We want to talk about science, but not only science. We hope to allow our listeners to hear about what the life of a scientist is actually like, hearing personal stories of our guests from a wide range of disciplines.

However, in this pilot episode you'll be hearing about us, the Not Only Pipetting Team (egotistical right?!). We want to give you a chance to get to know who we are, our personal stories in science, and why we're all together making a podcast. We'll also give you some more details about what we plan to do with this podcast series.

So listen in, enjoy, and we hope to hear from you soon!

The whole team would also like to give a special mention to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), many thanks for letting us use your fantastic facilities to record this episode.
