Muscles don't tone and there is no one specific training method or nutrition plan to "tone up" or "get toned". It's a myth and a marketing buzzword used by companies to get around the fear a lot of people have of getting "too big" from strength training. But you shouldn't fear getting strong, you shouldn't fear working your muscles. #030 - Show Appreciation Daily
I have been struggling a little bit recently. Mentally and physically I have felt low, frustrated, and just generally stuck. It can be hard to get yourself out of that kind of situation when you don't know what the root cause is.  And I don't know what the root cause is. But one of the things which helps me manage it is to remind myself of what I do have which I know is going well, and showing appreciation for it daily. It might be something someone else did for me, it might be someone else just being in my life, it might be something I did for myself. But I have realised how important it is to appreciate these things, especially when times are tough. In this episode we're diving into the kind of dark and ominous reasons why you should show appreciation and gratitude daily, and some ways to actually practice this too. #029 - Where Did The Keto Diet Come From?
No diet has become as prominent on social media in recent years as the ketogenic diet, AKA the keto diet.  While almost all trendy or new diets end up being divisive, it feels like the keto diet has taken that to more of an extreme with plenty of criticism, but also some incredibly loyal, fanatical followers of it. I'm not here to pass judgement on anyone or their lifestyle and dietary preferences but I thought it would be interesting to trace back the history of the keto diet, with its foundation actually coming from Ancient Greece, to being a treatment for epilepsy, to the Atkins diet, to where it is today. #028 - 3 Easy Ways To Make Someone's Day Better
I recorded this episode towards the end of 2020, when I was feeling near my lowest point in the whole of this Covid pandemic. We're all tired of Zoom, and WhatsApp, and masks, and that ominous phrase "the new normal". There is a mental and physical fatigue which can drive us all down. But that means it's even more important that we learn to dig deeper and look after each other. One of the best ways to do that is in small daily acts which can spread some positivity and make someone's day brighter. #027 - Some Simple Facts About Apple Cider Vinegar
Short and sweet (or vinegar-y) episode on one of the most prominent "trendy" super foods in recent years - apple cider vinegar. I hate the taste of it. Social media and blogs seem to tout it as a solution for virtually any and every health problem. Want to lose weight? Just get some ACV down you. Acne? Smear your face with it. Diabetic? You guessed it. It's far too easy for anyone to make claims about a health food and for people to take it as fact without doing their own homework. Fortunately, I did that homework for you. As someone whose mind seems to constantly run at a million miles an hour, trying to get it to slow down a little bit for a second, let alone for a few minutes has always been a challenge. It's why I've never been able to really meditate before. Body dysmorphic disorder (or body dysmorphia as it's also known) is a mental health condition that can be a huge source of anxiety for many, where we often perceive our own flaws to be a lot worse or more significant than they actually are or where we fixate on specific physical features. Changing your social circle or the people surround yourself with can be difficult, especially when you're an introvert. Especially in lockdown. Especially when you don't have a big social circle to begin with and don't really know how to reach out to other people. I've been struggling with binge eating for a few months now. At least a couple of nights every week, I seem to end up with this unstoppable urge to empty my food cupboards and eat everything. I've found a few habits to manage when I feel a binge coming on that have helped me stabilise my eating habits a lot and have brought down my binge eating into a more manageable state (it still happens but I'm better with it now). Home fitness, on-demand fitness and apps have been getting bigger for a while. But with gyms forced to close internationally, we all had to adapt and it was time for these apps to shine. I've tried most of them and I've picked out 3 of the best known to compare. Peloton aren't just there for the expensive bike or treadmill. They have a pretty comprehensive app with all their classes on there too. Centr, founded by Chris Hemsworth has been hammering my Instagram feed too. Something super close to my own background and history that has shaped a lot of my life is eating disorders. It's not talked about in guys - it's usually seen as a "girls' thing" - but it happens. Some studies suggest as many as 20-25% of cases of eating disorders globally are in men. So I want to spend some time talking about it and this probably won't be the first time.
