Today's guest is James Burgmann-Milner, who writes under JR Burgmann. He is an award-winning writer and doctoral candidate with the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub, where he also works as a Teaching and Research Associate. His doctoral research focuses on narrative forms of climate change communication. James' fiction and arts journalism have been published widely. His co-authored book Science Fiction and Climate Change: A Sociological Approach was shortlisted for both the British Science Fiction Association awards and the Locus awards. His debut novel Children of Tomorrow, which was highly commended in the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards this year, will be published by Upswell Publishing in early 2023. Today's guest is Kenna MacTavish! She is a PhD candidate, research assistant, and tutor in the Publishing and Communications program at the University of Melbourne. Her research focuses on contemporary book culture, specifically the post-digital affordances of books, social media platforms, and genre systems. Her work on taste-making and bookstagram is published in Post-Digital Book Cultures: Australian Perspectives (Monash University Press, 2021). When she’s not researching, you’ll find her singing, reading, and sipping coffee in a home surrounded by eucalypts. Listen in for a great chat about all things books, publishing and university!

Introducing today's guest, Kiana! She is the founder and president of H.E.R.O. Tent, a grassroots mutual aid organization that developed from the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. The organization and Kiana are both based in San Jose California. Tune in to listen to some insightful conversations about race, the prison to school pipeline, optimism and more! 

Today's guest is Ruvimbo, who is the CEO of a beauty brand that aims to change the 'Beauty Narrative', by founding Ruvè Cosmetics with hopes to see a more diverse and inclusive beauty industry. Over the past two years, she’s seen her business grow tremendously with her products used globally. When she’s not busy with business, she’s also a published writer and an activist passionate about young people unveiling their potential in every aspect of their lives!

This week we’ll be joined by activist and filmmaker Geril Lumawig! We’ll be discussing the migrant experience, colonialism, and how making art can object to the status quo!

Introducing this week’s guests: Dr Tom and Jump Daddy from the hit podcast ‘Dad to Me’. Dr Tom is a lecturer in Latin Literature at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He has published books, lectured around the world, and been arrested only once for public nudity. He’s also donated sperm to a same-sex couple and is currently navigating the meaning of being a dad, but not. Jump Daddy is a clown school drop-out who, somehow, still made it as a professional idiot. An Australian comedian, he has performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Sydney Opera House, Melbourne International Comedy festival and every single Commonwealth country. He is not a father, but he did have one for a long time. With their delightful mishmash of experience with academia, comedy, podcasting and fatherhood, we’re very interested to see where this conversation goes!

This week we are joined by Aaron Billings, who is a textile and comic artist, working out of Pink Ember studio in Coburg. He makes quilts, paints, draws, records radio plays and hosts workshops teaching embroidery and comic art, and he graduated with Honours in Fine Arts from Monash University in 2019. 

Introducing today’s guest, Italian senior lecturer and coordinator of European Languages at Monash University, Dr Francesco Ricatti. His research focuses on transcultural, social change within these cultures, as well as migration history. His work has won funding from Scanlon Foundation and National Geographic. Francesco is currently studying Italians in Australia to develop a decolonial approach to history of Italian and Mediterranean migration in Australia. 

Today's guest on NoTheory is Dr Ian Parsons, who is a musicologist from Melbourne. He has a particular interest in the connections between music and philosophy. Ian completed his PhD at Monash University, where he developed an interpretation of Stockhausen's opera cycle LICHT from the perspective of Heideggerian phenomenology and Lacanian psychoanalysis. As well as teaching at Monash University, he has also lectured, and provided research coaching, in the Masters Aus LICHT course at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and is a regular guest presenter at the Stockhausen Courses in Kürten, Germany.  Prior to his studies and work in musicology, he had a background in social policy and law reform in both the public and community sectors. Ian also presents a weekly radio show in Melbourne that focuses on avant-garde art music.

We’re very excited about today’s guest Esmé James! As a published writer, PhD candidate and TikTok star, Esmé’s areas of expertise seem endless. We plan to pick her brain on creative processes, the publishing industry, and of course, her saucy TikTok series ‘Kinky History’.

Introducing this week’s guests: Luke and Darcy from the band ‘8w’! They are all about making music that listeners can connect to and sing along to while incorporating their personal experiences. Having only met in late 2019, they have created a unique sound that mesmerises their audience. They have played multiple live gigs, including gigs at the Queenscliff Brewery and the St Leonards hotel, and now that they have more time on their hands, 8w have been releasing music at a fast pace.
