Preston North End 0-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

It was hardly a vintage match and it was definitely not a great performance from the Reds, as apart from a bright opening, they were outplayed by a high-pressing Preston team. Forest were struggling to make their game work and, apart from a penalty shout in the first few minutes, and a dangerous cross from Djed Spence at the death, there was a lack of postive action. On the other hand, Preston will feel as though they should have taken their chances and claimed all the points.

As Steve Cooper pointed out, on these nights, you are grateful for the point; however, some fans were questioning the tactical choices and lack of substitutions made by the gaffer. Steven Toplis and Tom Newton discuss the match in our 50th podcast of the season; hopefully a win against Bristol City will make the 51st feel a bit happier.

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Stoke City: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 2-2 Stoke City: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

We predicted that this would be a tough match against an in-form Stoke team, and so it proved. Forest were second best in the first half, but held on, and actually took the lead before the hour mark when sub Sam Surridge played a ball out to the left wing, and Max Lowe's peachy cross was converted by the onrushing Brennan Johnson. The visitors equalised through Josh Maja, and a combination of the woodwork and Brice Samba kept the Reds in it.

The last 5-10 minutes were another story though; just as Steve Cooper made his last two attacking substitutions, Samba got himself stupidly and deservedly sent off for cuffing Josh Tymon around the head. Joe Worrall took the gloves and his first duty was to pick the ball out of the net from Lewis Baker's penalty. However, Forest just keep going, and when Jimmy Garner's free kick hit the bar, Scott McKenna got his head to it and Ryan Yates converted from close range to rescue the point.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the match, the keeper, the pitch invader and the referee, as well as the pick of the Reds players. We also hear a view from the opposition, as we are once again joined by Ben Rowley from Stoke podcast The YYY Files.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Another enjoyable away day sees Forest move into the Championship playoff places for the first time this season, continuing the remarkable turnaround Steve Cooper has masterminded since arriving at The City Ground. A first-half goal from James Garner and a penalty from Brennan Johnson in the closing minutes of the match secured a 2-0 success for the Reds, who took the game to Blackburn with a mixture of skill, guile and determination and were rewarded with the points against a side who are well in the mix for an automatic promotion spot.

Steven is joined by Tom and they talk about the brilliance of Keinan Davis, Garner's reward for his fine recent performances, the warrior-like spirit from the back three and more examples of how Cooper is simply getting it right as Forest boss.

Nottingham Forest 4-1 Leicester City: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

An extended match report on a special day at the City Ground as a first-half salvo saw the Reds blitz Premier League Leicester and progress to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Goals from Zinckernagel, Johnson, Worrall and Spence gave the home team a comfortable cushion that was only briefly threatened when an error from Brice Samba saw Kelechi Iheanacho pull a goal back just before half-time (the pigeon was awarded MOTM for the away team).

Rich Ferraro and Baz talk through the goals, the performances, Warrior Worrall and also the less savoury moments such as the violence of Leicester fans in town and at the ground. We also talk about how this result will mean little unless the newly beefed-up squad can keep picking up the points in the League, starting at Blackburn on Wednesday.

Transfer window special: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast

Transfer window special: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Nottingham Forest's transfer window saw new players arrive at the very beginning (Keinan Davis, Steve Cook), middle (Richie Laryea) and end (Sam Surridge and Jonathan Panzo). Just as importantly a number of players left, including Joao Carvalho, Lyle Taylor and Carl Jenkinson, along with more recent acquisitions Rodrigo Ely and Mo Drager. However, the highest profile transfer activity was the retention of Brennan Johnson, with the Reds resisting a big money offer from Brentford, and also Djed Spence for the rest of the season.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis and our very own new signing, the Cycling Defender to discuss incomings, outgoings and retentions. We also discuss the loss of skipper Lewis Grabban due to injury, and whether the last month demonstrates that the club are now being more strategic with how they are building a squad. We don't even have time to discuss the FA Cup tie against Leicester or forthcoming six pointers in the league.

Cardiff City 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Cardiff City 2-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

A bad day for Forest at Cardiff as they failed to turn up, conceding a cheap early goal and never really recovering. Jordan Hugill was given the freedom of the Reds' half after just six minutes and made no mistake, and more lax defending in the second half saw sub Isaak Davies score a second goal after the hour mark. Realistically, the match was over, although a late chance for Xande Silva and a stoppage-time consolation from Keinan Davis offered brief glimmers of hope.

Steve Cooper acknowledged that Forest only had themselves to blame and it was possibly the Reds' worst showing since the gaffer took charge. Also worryingly, senior players Steve Cook and Lewis Grabban succumbed to injury, with the skipper taking the brunt of a robust challenge from Will Vaulks and being helped off the pitch in some pain.

In this extended match report, Rich Ferraro and Steven Toplis discuss the Reds' poor performance, a couple of questionable refereering decisions, and also whether the injury situation will force Forest's hand on the last day of the transfer window.

Nottingham Forest 3-0 Barnsley: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 3-0 Barnsley: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Forest continued their winning ways by seeing off bottom side Barnsley in front of a bumper Tuesday evening crowd of 27,000 at The City Ground.

After a quiet opening, Forest took the lead on 15 minutes when Keinan Davis dispossed Mads Andersen, before striding through and slotting the ball into the corner for his first goal in a Reds shirt since joining on loan from Aston Villa.

Steve Cooper's side doubled their lead seven minutes before the break as Ryan Yates finished off a flowing move, which involved an incisive Jack Colback pass to release Brennan Johnson down the left, where he put a superb cross in which Yates tapped home, timing his run into the box perfectly.

A slow start to the second half saw little action but Forest stepped it up again and added a third on 75 minutes. Djed Spence carried the ball down the right flank, seeing off the attention of several Barnsley defenders, he rolled the ball inside where Johnson stroked it first time into the far bottom corner to cap off a comfortable victory. The Reds saw an effort by Steve Cook saved and a Xande Silva strike hit the post as they went on to secure a win which moves them closer to the Championship playoff places.

Steven is joined by Tom Newton to reflect on Forest's win, including the influence Brennan Johnson is having on the side, how Forest got the job done on the night and Steve Cooper's post-match comments, where he made reference to 'that' Charlton game and was keen to avoid a repeat, following the high of the Derby victory on Saturday.

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Derby County: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Derby County: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

A derby day that had the lot; a Forest win, drama, memorable goals and even a bust-up at the end! This Saturday lunchtime clash saw Forest secure a 2-1 victory over Derby and extend their unbeaten run against their rivals to 10 matches.

Forest lined up without the injured Joe Worrall, so Ryan Yates moved into the back three alongside Steve Cook and Scott McKenna, whilst ex-Derby man Max Lowe made his return from the sidelines at left wing-back. However, an uninsipiring start saw Steve Cooper switch to a 4-3-2-1 formation in the first half, but aside from a huge miss by Derby's Tom Lawrence, the opening 45 didn't offer much.

The second half got off to a flyer, as Lewis Grabban netted his third goal in as many games and 13th of the season, pouncing after Cook's attempted shot was blocked into his path. With eight minutes remaining, Brennan Johnson started and finished a fine move, exchanging passes with Philip Zinckernagel before firing into the bottom corner of the net for 2-0.

Derby pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Lawrence, at which point the midfielder was barged out of the way by Brice Samba (sporting a headband after a previous accidental clash with the Derby no. 10), sparking a heated clash inside the goal.

The visitors, in the midst of their well-publicised off-field issues, couldn't find an equaliser. Ravel Morrison was given a straight red for a reckless challenge on Zinckernagel, while at the final whistle another melee broke out as the Forest players and fans enjoyed their victory, with the Reds retaining the Brian Clough Trophy.

The Maradona of the Midlands is joined by Baz and Steven to talk over an eventful East Midlands Derby, where they look at the tactical battle of the first half, Forest's improved second half showing, the brilliance of Brennan's goal and Samba having the Derby players on strings.

Transfers, tactics and TikTok: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast, January 2022

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

We've already had some exciting match reports for you since the turn of the year, but this month's discussion gives us a chance to reflect further on two outstanding results, as the Reds bounced back from Covid and back-to-back league defeats:

  • Tactics: the Arsenal and Millwall victories suggest that Steve Cooper has a blueprint of "keep it solid then strike" - or at least, they do when they have a full squad available. We also discuss how the Reds are able to keep going for 90+ minutes.
  • Transfers: Forest struck early in the window, making two solid-looking signings in Keinan Davis and Steve Cook, with full-back Richmond Laryea following shortly afterwards and Djed Spence seemingly extending his stay at the City Ground. Will there be any outgoings though?
  • We also show appreciation to veteran skipper Lewis Grabban, and compare his captaincy style to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paolo Maldini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
  • There's still time to pay our respects to local broadcasting legend Colin Slater, discuss a 5-a-side team made up of the kids of ex-Forest players, and Jeremy Davies joins us with his monthly sketch. Plus we have another game of Guess That Red, and you know what - we're on TikTok - how did that happen?

Millwall 0-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Millwall 0-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

What is it about this Forest team and late goals?! This time it was a 91st minute winner from Lewis Grabban that secured a dramatic victory for Steve Cooper's side at The New Den, after a see-saw second half which saw chances galore for Forest, as well as several opportunities for the hosts, who were twice denied brilliantly by Brice Samba in the Forest net.

Grabban replaced Philip Zinckernagel in the starting XI, playing just behind Keinan Davis, but it was Forest who struggled to get much going in the first half, only coming into proceedings just before the break. The Reds were much-improved in the second, with some fluent passing from Ryan Yates and James Garner, the guile of Grabban and Davis and the lively Brennan Johnson causing Millwall all kinds of problems.

The game saw plenty of chances come and go for both sides, with Forest in particular forcing good saves out of Bartosz Bialkowski in the Lions goal and seeing efforts cleared off the line, before Grabban stepped up with minutes remaining to send the travelling Forest fans wild.

Steven is joined by Tom Newton to discuss a match where Forest's staying power once again came to the fore. They talk about the importance of Lewis Grabban to the side, how the Reds approached the game in the right manner as well as the belief and determination that the team continues to show under Cooper.

Nottingham Forest 1-0 Arsenal: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Well, that was enjoyable wasn't it?! Forest knock Arsenal out of the FA Cup in the third round again with a memorable victory on Trentside. On a night where the Reds delivered a superb team performance, Lewis Grabban netted the deciding goal on 83 minutes when he steered home a terrific cross from the right by Ryan Yates, giving Steve Cooper's Forest a victory that left The City Ground crowd delighted.

Steven is joined by Tom Newton to discuss a match where Forest were committed, resolute but also threatening when they had the ball. They talk about the promising debuts of new signings Steve Cook and Keinan Davis, how Cooper set Forest up to go on and win the game, as well as the continued brilliance of Djed Spence, who impressed fans up and down the country with his display.

The result means Forest will be back in cup action at the beginning of Feburary, when they face neighbours and holders Leicester City in the fourth round.

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Huddersfield Town: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 0-1 Huddersfield Town: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

It's a bit of a shock to the system to lose two matches in a row after the run that Forest have been on since Chris Hughton left, but a Covid-disrupted Reds team will feel that they should have got at least a point, and probably three, out of this one - they certainly had enough chances.

Baz is joined by Tom Newton to discuss a match where Huddersfield only had three real shots on target, but scored the only goal; whereas Forest just couldn't put the ball in the net. Was Steve Cooper out-manoeuvred tactically by Carlos Corberan, or was the defeat down to the lack of depth in the Forest squad?

Despite the disappointing last few days, we are still optimistic for the New Year. We want to thank you for listening and wish you all a healthy and happy new year.

Middlesbrough 2-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

We knew this would happen eventually, and today Chris Wilder's Middlesbrough were tactically and physically superior to Forest for 90% of the match. A woeful own goal by Ryan Yates gave the hosts the lead, and they really should have scored three or four before the break. Forest had a good ten minute spell on the hour, but Philip Zinckernagel and Joe Worrall were off target, and Andraz Sporar put the game to bed shortly afterwards.

Rich Ferraro and the Maradona of the Midlands discuss the game, in particular the full-back positions, Steve Cooper's tactical options, and introduction of Joao Carvalho and Xande Silva from the bench.

All of a sudden, Forest are just outside the play-off places with half the season played, and I'm not sure many Reds fans would have predicted that back in September. Nottingham Forest 2-1 Hull City: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Another victory for Forest, but a hard-fought one where the Reds had to come from behind and overcome losing two players to injury. It was a murky day by the Trent, and with the spectre of Covid causing disruption to football and our Christmas plans, this was a day when things could have gone awry, especially after Kean Lewis-Potter opened the scoring just before the break. However, second half goals from Lewis Grabban (pen) and Brennan Johnson saw the home team claim victory and the fans leave with smiles on their faces.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to talk about the misfortunes of Jordi Osei-Tutu and Alex Mighten, who both made good contributions before succumbing to injury; a controversial penalty; and the brilliance of Johnson's finish when bagging the winning goal.

Swansea City 1-4 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Forest go from strength to strength under Steve Cooper with a brilliant 4-1 win at Swansea City; the Reds putting in a clinical performance against Cooper's former employers and providing the travelling Reds supporters with a day to remember.

The first half was a goalless affair, with Swansea just edging it on chances created. However, the second half saw five goals, four of them for the visitors! Philip Zinckernagel got things going with a ferocious strike from just inside the area on 48 minutes before Lewis Grabban doubled Forest's lead two minutes later after a fine move orchestrated by Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson down the right.

Joel Piroe made it 2-1 with a shot that deflected in off Ryan Yates but Johnson restored the two-goal cushion soon after as he pounced on a mistake by Swans goalkeeper Ben Hamer. Swansea pushed in the closing stages but Cooper's men wrapped things up in injury time as Cafu fired home Lyle Taylor's cutback to seal a tremendous win.

Steven Toplis is joined by Tom Newton to reflect on events in South Wales, including Forest's clinical qualities, Cooper's continued impact, the return of Jordi Osei-Tutu and our new centre-back - Ryan Yates!

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Peterborough United: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 2-0 Peterborough United: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

After three successive Championship draws, Forest got back to winning ways against struggling Peterborough, on a wet and blustery City Ground afternoon. The first half offered very little in terms of quality, although Philip Zinckernagel almost put the Reds ahead within the first minute as his drive from range was tipped away by Posh 'keeper David Cornell, and later Lewis Grabban later fired into the side netting from an angle.

The second half was a big improvement; Forest came out pressing Peterborough higher up the pitch, playing with a greater pace and intensity. They were rewarded on 72 minutes as Grabban's miscued finish fell to James Garner in the box to prod home, before Ryan Yates wrapped things up 12 minutes later (even if he didn't know much about it!) as he turned Garner's corner into the net.

The performance of the referee (suprise, surprise) frustrated both Forest and Peterborough, particularly the Reds when he turned down a strong second-half handball penalty shout with the score at 0-0. In the end it didn't matter as Forest did what they needed to in order to win, leaving them six points off the playoffs and with a record of 27 points and one defeat from their last 14 games.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Steven Toplis to mull over Saturday's events, with Grabban, Garner, the referee and the weather all featuring!

West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

West Bromwich Albion 0-0 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Another match, another draw for the Reds. This game was probably not that high on quality but there were some talking points. West Brom huffed and puffed and occasionally got in behind the Forest backline, but they offered little upfront and Brice Samba only had one notable save to make. Forest were similarly blunt in the final third, with Sam Johnstone palming over Brennan Johnson's deflected effort.

However, there is still much to be pleased about - Forest were missing Max Lowe and Jack Colback, but were still competitive throughout, and after Jayson Molumby's red card the away side looked the most likely, with attacking substitutions, efforts blocked, and crosses just missed. There was still a get out of jail moment when Jordan Hugill showed a lack of composure in front of goal, but it says a lot that Steve Cooper's Reds were disappointed with an away draw at an ex-Premier League side.

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Luton Town: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 0-0 Luton Town: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

A goalless draw at the City Ground only tells half the story, on a night short on quality but with plenty of incident. Unfortunately, most eyes were on referee Jeremy Simpson, who was trying to make a name for himself by awarding a penalty to Luton, sending off Jack Colback, and then denying the Reds what looked like a clear penalty at the other end. It says a lot when both managers are unhappy with the officials.

Both teams could have won it - Brice Samba saved the pen and then made a great save later on, but Lyle Taylor could have given Forest the lead earlier on. As well as Samba, there were good performances by Scott McKenna and debutant Braian Ojeda. We speak to Luton fan Ryan McCole to discuss the major talking points.

Reading 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

A draw away at Reading probably feels more like two points dropped, rather than a point gained, especially as the Royals were rocked by a six-point deduction, a host of injuries, and Philip Zinckernagel's excellent early goal. However, the home team went on to be the stronger team for most of the first half, although it took them until 62 minutes to get back into the match after the introduction of sub Andy Carroll. Forest will feel like they had the better chances in the second half, with Lewis Grabban having two efforts of note.

Rich Ferraro and the Maradona Of The Midlands discuss the above, as well as Max Lowe and the Colback/Yates axis, and much more. Nottingham Forest 3-0 Preston North End: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 3-0 Preston North End: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

In a break with recent tradition, there were no late goals or comebacks in this one, as Forest recorded a comfortable (in the end) victory over Preston North End. Forest reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation in an attempt to get the first goal and provide more attacking threat, and although Preston made a confident start, the Reds struck first through Lewis Grabban's penalty. MOTM Jack Colback added a great second goal before half-time.

It's worth noting that the Reds didn't have it all their own way - at the start of each half, the visitors exerted pressure, and Grabban's second goal after a jinking, mazy run from Brennan Johnson was needed to put the game to bed. After three matches in a row with (ahem) curious refereeing decisions, Forest probably got the benefit of the doubt for much of this game. Rich Ferraro and Baz report on a welcome three points.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Sheffield United: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Sheffield United: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Late goal? Check. Belief and resilience? Check. The Amazing Djed Spence? Check. "Interesting" refereeing? Check check check it out - the 1865 Match Report is here!

Rich Ferraro and Steven Toplis discuss a match that was a great advert for the Championship; despite only one save all match, there was plenty of action, and both teams will feel like they could have taken all three points. After substitute Billy Sharp created the Blades' opener for the excellent Morgan Gibbs-White, our own veteran forward Lewis Grabban came off the bench to score a real striker's goal.

The big talking points for the Reds were Jack Colback at left back; the impact of the subs (again); the performance of human Duracell bunny Djed Spence (again); and of course that penalty incident (again) which saw an incredulous Brennan Johnson booked for diving. Most of all, it was telling that, even after conceding on 78 minutes, the fans and team knew that they could get back into the match, and maybe even win it.

Queens Park Rangers 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Queens Park Rangers 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

A late late deflected goal from Jack Colback provided the bit of luck that Forest needed to get a point away at QPR. The Reds had played well but struggled with the final ball, and as a result Seny Diang did not have much to do in the Rangers net. On the other hand, QPR scored on the stroke of half time, and could have had more in the second half as the Reds chased the game.

Baz is joined by Tom Newton for this review of the game, reflecting on the belief and never-say-die attitude that characterises this Forest team and Head Coach. Unfortunately, there are also more than a few words for this referee, and the standard of officiating in general - even Steve Cooper said that he couldn't talk about it as he didn't want to get into trouble (however, our Tom has no such qualms).

Nottingham Forest 0-4 Fulham: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Back down to earth with a bump, the Reds paid the price for naivety and silly mistakes, and were punished by a rampant Fulham team, with Aleksandr Mitrovic showing his class with two goals, and Neeskens Kebano scoring an excellent goal on the break.

Forest will need to learn from this match, dust themselves down and get back on the horse. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss midfield pivots, turning points, and the referee, who notably drew the ire of Reds gaffer Steve Cooper.

Bristol City 1-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report (extended edition)

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

An extended match report after an extraordinary end to the match, as Lyle Taylor scored twice in stoppage time to take all three points. Alex Scott (not that one) gave Bristol City a first half lead, but the Reds maintained their belief and attacking impetus. It was never really in doubt, was it?

Rich Ferraro is joined by The Athletic's Nick Miller for a totally unbiased summary of the game (he got some funny looks for swearing at the ref in the press box) - up for discussion are: hitting the post, and Brice Samba's saves; the penalties that weren't, and the one that was; Lyle Taylor's languid lollop up to the spot; and the limbs following the winning goal.

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Blackpool: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Blackpool: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

At long last, Forest managed to get that elusive home win in the league, at the expense of a Blackpool side who have found their feet in the Championship. Goals from Brennan Johnson and Lewis Grabban earned the victory, despite the Reds being pegged back by a Jerry Yates equaliser following a mix-up between Djed Spence and Brice Samba.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz to discuss the feelgood factor at this match - "it was a proper fight", as well as the contributions of Philip Zinckernagel, Jack Colback and Ryan "Pirlo" Yates, as Steve Cooper made tactical tweaks and the right substitutions to see Forest over the line (and once again, knew all the right things to say after the match).

Belief and confidence: The 1865 Nottingham Forest Podcast, October 2021

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

It feels like a lot has happened in the last month: Chris Hughton was sacked, Forest got their first win of the season under Steven Reid, and Steve Cooper has joined with a charm offensive. Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz, Tom Newton and Steven Toplis to discuss tactics and formations, the impact on the players, and Cooper's willingness to engage with the fanbase.

Speaking of fans, we also discuss what supporters really want from following their team, with reference to the NFFC Supporters' Trust and the current situation at Newcastle United. Birmingham City 0-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Birmingham City 0-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Another three goals on the road and another three points; Forest made it three away wins on the spin as they ran out 3-0 winners over Birmingham City at St. Andrews.

In an entertaining game played on a wet and rainy afternoon, it was Forest who took the lead on 11 minutes as Lewis Grabban thumped home a brilliant 20-yard strike. The hosts threatened to fight back as they caused some scares inthe Reds defence with set pieces, but it was a set piece of their own that saw Forest double their lead, as Ryan Yates headed home a corner on the half hour mark.

In the second half a swift, flowing counter attack saw Forest extend their lead further after nice work from Grabban and Philip Zinckernagel released Djed Spence down the right, where the wing-back thumped a finish into the roof of the next for 3-0.

Birmingham responded with chances of their own but Brice Samba held firm in the Forest goal, producing a stunning late save from Marc Roberts' header to preserve a clean sheet. The Forest 'keeper was rightly praised by head coach Steve Cooper at the end of the game.

It makes it two wins from three for the new Forest boss, with an impressive counter-attacking display that saw Zinckernagel, Grabban and Brennan Johnson in particular pose a constant threat, running the Birmingham defence ragged at times.

In our match report Baz is joined by Steven as they talk about the improvements from Jack Colback and Ryan Yates, how Forest are playing with a greater sense of freedom and the continued impact that Steve Cooper is having on his new side.

Barnsley 1-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Barnsley 1-3 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Steve Cooper took his Forest side to South Yorkshire to face Barnsley - a team who've inflicted damage upon the Reds in recent years - and the new head coach picked up his first win since taking charge with an enjoyable 3-1 success.

Forest shaded the first half but it was Barnsley who led on 20 minutes, as Cauley Woodrow converted the penalty he'd won after being hauled down in the box by Tobias Figuereido. Forest fought back in the second half, though, with the introduction of Lewis Grabban for Figuereido and a switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation providing the catalyst for goals.

Grabban released Brennan Johnson down the right-hand side and he squared the ball across goal to provide Philip Zinckernagel with a simple tap-in, before Johnson made it 2-1 with a neat finish soon after. Grabban later got his goal after Alex Mighten's trickery saw him get away down the left before sliding the ball across for Grabban to convert.

Forest were rewarded for a positive display as they took advantage of gaps in the Barnsley defence and it's possible they could have had even more on a night that provided plenty of enjoyment for the travelling Reds at Oakwell, as well as those watching on TV.

Steven is joined by Tom for this match report, where they reflect on the impact Cooper is already having with the team, his positive substitutions on the night and Forest serving up some enjoyable attacking football.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Millwall: The 1865 Match Report

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Millwall: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Following the first win of the season last weekend, Steve Cooper took charge of Nottingham Forest for the first time as Millwall visited The City Ground. The new head coach started with a point, earned thanks to a second-half fightback after Matt Smith (again!) found the back of the net for the visitors in the first half.

Max Lowe equalised for Forest on 52 minutes, picking up the ball from Scott McKenna before firing a cross into the box and also into the back of the net, as it soared over Bartosz Bialkowski in the Millwall goal. The on-loan left-back might not have meant to score, but his goal secured a decent point in the circumstances.

Cooper kept faith with the 3-4-2-1 system that worked well in the win at Huddersfield and named an unchanged team. While the Reds might not have hit the heights they did a week ago in South Yorkshire, they did enough to suggest they'll be a more entertaining side to watch this season.

Steven is joined by Baz for this match report, where they look at the positives to take from Cooper's first match in charge, the impressive performances of the two Forest full-backs as well as some pockets of discontent that still seem to be evident among the Forest faithful.

Steve Cooper arrives: 1865 Podcast Special

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Another season and another new manager joins Nottingham Forest - or should we say head coach? After the departure of Chris Hughton last week, former Swansea City boss Steve Cooper has been appointed as head coach at The City Ground. The Welshman, who led the Swans to back-to-back playoff finishes in the Championship, takes charge of the Reds after their first win of the season at the eighth attempt; the 2-0 victory at Huddersfield Town on Saturday under the caretaker stewardship of Steven Reid.

Rich Ferraro is joined by Baz, Steven Toplis and the Maradona of the Midlands to examine the latest change in the Forest dugout. As well as touching on where it went wrong for Hughton, the panel look at Cooper's pedigree, his style of play and they ask if Forest have finally implemented some form of "strategy" through Cooper's appointment. Tom Morgan from Total Swans TV also joins the team to provide his view on the appointment of Cooper and what Forest fans can expect following his arrival.

Huddersfield Town 0-2 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report

Lo and behold, a win! Forest collected three points for the first time in nearly six months, as the managerless Reds scored two goals and kept a clean sheet away at Huddersfield Town. It was noticeable that Forest were trying to get higher up the pitch, and playing three centre backs seemed to give a better balance to the team.

In this dogcast, Rich Ferraro and Baz compare and contrast the tactics and performance to what we saw under Chris Hughton; we also hear from Brady from Huddersfield podcast And He Takes That Chance with an opposition fan's view of the high-vis Reds.

Nottingham Forest 0-2 Middlesbrough: The 1865 Match Report

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

Forest fell to their sixth defeat in seven Championship matches as Middlesbrough ran out 2-0 winners on another night to forget at The City Ground. Despite a reasonably bright start, Forest fell behind in the 24th minute to a clinical finish from Andraz Sporar before a mistake by goalkeeper Ethan Horvath presented the ball to Onel Hernandez for a simple tap in 18 minutes from time, wrapping up the points for the visitors and keeping Forest bottom of the table.

In this match report (recorded before Chris Hughton's sacking) Baz and Steven reflect on what went wrong for the Reds on the night, an atmosphere that was far from enjoyable as well as what the future holds for Forest and how they can turn their season around.

Derby County 1-1 Nottingham Forest: The 1865 Match Report (extended edition)

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

An extended match report as Forest picked up their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw at rivals Derby County. After Tom Lawrence put the hosts in front in the first half, Forest responded in the second and were rewarded seven minutes from the end, as Brennan Johnson netted his first senior goal for the Reds with a well-taken strike.

In this extended edition of the 1865 Match Report, Steven Toplis is joined by Cory and Jason from Derby podcast Rams Review. They talk over a missed handball, a missed stamping and examine the performances of the two sides, as the Rams were left to rue missed opportunities and the visitors staged a fightback which might just have eased the pressure on under-fire Forest boss Chris Hughton.

"Why doesn't he play the kids? They cannot do any worse than the first team." Tonight, against a Wolves team costing nearly £100m (with more on the bench), Forest's kids gave a brave account of themselves but were overpowered by Premier League opposition.

The sad thing is that, on some counts, you cannot win - some fans were asking why Hughton didn't play more first teamers! The thing we are all agreed on is that we won't score unless we actually manage some attempts on target. Tom Newton reports from the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest 1-2 Blackburn Rovers: The 1865 Match Report (extended edition)

1865: The Nottingham Forest Podcast is proud to partner with FanHub and The Terrace.

An extended match report as Forest suffered their third consecutive 2-1 league defeat, in another match marred by poor defending from set pieces, and a lack of cutting edge up front. What was most interesting was that the grumbles on social media became very real, as fans openly questioned Chris Hughton's tactics, selection and substitutions, and even (astonishingly) chanted for former gaffer Sabri Lamouchi.

In this special episode, Steven Toplis reviews the action and has an in-depth conversation with Ryan Hildred from Rovers Chat about how Rovers won the game, and just as importantly, how Forest "beat themselves". Ryan is surprised to hear the hostility towards Chris Hughton, but he was also amazed at how poor Forest were. Then Baz gives us an overview of why it just isn't working for Hughton at Forest, and whether there is a comparison with Jose Mourinho's career.

THE PORTUGUESE PRINCE IS BACK! Well, that was the headline. Of course, it was *only* Bradford, but Forest fans will have taken real heart from the battling qualities, skill and guile shown by the young Reds in a match that was still a step up from what most of them will have experienced. Particular plaudits go to Fin Back and man of the match Tyrese Fornah, who was wonderfully humble in his post-match interview.

A disappointing start to the season as Coventry took the three points with a last gap goal.
