24: Eating Disorders & How to Help a Friend with Jan Courtney

24: Eating Disorders & How to Help a Friend with Jan Courtney

"And these [Eating disorder] behaviors are very often done under the guise of being healthy. So the third thing I look at is how much did the behaviors and or the thoughts interfere with daily living? Can the person enjoy going out to eat with a friend, or do they ever skip a party or a class because they just have to exercise? And very often, eating disorders begin as attempts to lose a few pounds, to get in better shape, or to eat healthier, a really common starting point. And then at some point, those good intentions take on a mind of their own and begin to run the show. "- Jan Courtney

Show Details:

Today we have Jan Courtney on the show, Jan is a Licensed Mental Health Clinician with over 20 years of  experience working in in private practice, inpatient, outpatient, and  community behavioral health settings. Jan is the coordinator of eating disorder services at CAPS. She  offers counseling and triage services, facilitates the Campus Eating  Disorder Awareness and Recovery Group (CEDAR) at CAPS and co-chairs the  Eating Assessment Team.  Jan has helped so many students during her time here on campus and she shares some ways that students can care for one another, offer support and even some ways we can protect our own body image or at least have some self-compassion along the way. Enjoy this one!

17: Food & Culture Series- Food & the Jewish Culture with Ruth Halter

"...one of the things I did get to learn from his mom was how to make matzo  ball soup, and the other word for that would be Jewish penicillin. At  least we'd joke that way, but it truly does help cure a cold. Well, it  doesn't really help cure a cold, but it helps you feel better,  naturally. I do it the traditional way. I boil my chicken with the  vegetables in there and then, a whole chicken, and that's making my  broth."- Ruth Halter

So it's a way to eat that is really self compassionate, it's weight neutral, it really focuses on how food makes us feel when we are nourished and we get enough to eat, but also when we enjoy eating." - Megan Meyer

As Christy mentions in the show, if anyone knows food, Dietitians know food.

"Learn to be your own best expert, like really working and being attuned to your own body and what works and what doesn't work and what helps you function your best during the day, because no one knows your body like you know your body."- Lisa MacDonald

"Keep up that curiosity, not only with foods that you're eating that may already be prepared, but try new foods that maybe you've heard about and haven't tried yet and take that curiosity into the kitchen and prepare your own foods, because that's all part of self care."-- Christy Wilson

"...Food is so much more than just numbers and things that we put in our body that it's it's our culture, it's love, it's comfort, it's community, there's just so much more to food than what it says on the back of the food label." - Ashley Munro

"I think it's important you continue to fuel the body throughout the day because you can only process and utilize so much at one time. And when I say well balanced, I always tell our athletes have all four, your carbohydrates, protein, fruit, vegetable and some fluids."- Phil Lewis, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS
