SA's economic relations with USA, Russia
The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, and the United States Secretary of Treasury, Janet Yellen, recently visited South Africa for high-level talks with their counterparts in this country.
The OFM Business Hour's Olebogeng Motse spoke to Professor Raymond Parsons, Economist at the North-West University's Business School, who shed more light on this.
Episode 10: The fourth investment conference
Yesterday saw South Africa’s fourth international investment conference. Another R332 billion was pledged in planned projects and investment finance. On paper, it seems like a win for the President, but commentators have raised a number of questions. So I thought it is sensible to ask Prof Raymond Parsons, of the NWU Business School, to update us on the state of affairs. He was kind enough to share some of his views per voice note.
Episode 9: Loadshedding (and the solutions to it)
After a short break loadshedding was back last week, reminding all of us of the vulnerability of our electricity supply and the challenge of overhauling Eskom. So I thought it is sensible to ask an expert to update us on the state of affairs. Corneels Schabort, also of the NWU, was kind enough to share some of his views per voice note. If you want to understand the megawatts, IPPs, and what different sources of electricity the future will hold, listen here.
Episode 8: The war and the markets
The Russian invasion of Ukraine is making headlines every day and there is a lot of talk about the impact on the South African economy. The main channel is through international commodity prices. Things are moving fast, so I asked an agricultural markets expert, Dr Johnny van der Merwe, for some of his views per voice note.
Episode 7: The devil is in the tax details
Last week the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana delivered the Budget Speech. There was a lot of comment and I think that most analysts thought that the Minister struck the right balance between a little extra spending, a little tax relief, and managing the budget deficit and debt burden. There are risks, but at least there is nothing we did not already know about.
From a tax perspective, a lot less was said in the budget speech and in the analysis afterwards. So Prof Krugell called a tax expert to get some insight into the issues. I asked Dirk Kotze of Tributum Consulting for some of his views per voice note.
Listen to his views on the reduction of the corporate tax rate, the tax treatment of emigrants and immigrants, and high-net-worth individuals.
Episode 6 - The effects of the Russian / Ukraine invasion
Last week the Russian invasion of the Ukraine had economic ripple effects as far away as South Africa. The links are through trade, and markets have priced in potential disruptions in supply due to the conflict and the sanctions against Russia. The North-West University's Prof Waldo Krugel explains...
Episode 5: The Budget preview
Next week, on the 23rd of February the Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana will deliver his first main budget address to members of Parliament. Prof Waldo asked Christie Viljoen, an economist at PWC, for some of his views per voice note.
Episode 4: Prof Raymond Parsons on SONA 2022 - what does it mean for the economy and business?
In this episode we chat to Prof Raymond Parsons about the 2022 State of the Nation Address. How is South Africa doing? Does the government have a plan for the economy and are there indications of urgency to implement them?
Episode 3: Prof Waldo Krugell - South African inflation rate
Prof Waldo Krugell from the NWU Business School speaks to Olebogeng from the OFM Business Hour about the South African inflation rate 17 November 2021.
Episode 2: Prof Nelda Mouton on the OFM Business Hour - Upskill in the time of economic crisis.
Prof Nelda Mouton from the NWU Business School speaks to Olebogeng Motse from the OFM Business Hour about why it's important to upskill yourself constantly, especially with regard to the current economic situation South Africa finds itself in.
