By Rafael Di Furia

The Not Your Average Globetrotter project is an expat podcast for people who want to become an expat or are already expats who are interested in living abroad, moving abroad, “expat life”, and especially for those interested in living in Italy. Living in Italy - Mistakes I Made (& More)

Living in Italy - Mistakes I Made (& More)

Moving to Italy unveils a journey far beyond the allure of its famed pizza, pasta, and amore, introducing newcomers to a society where the stability of one's job overshadows credit scores in the housing market, and long-term commitments in both personal and professional spheres are deeply valued. The choice between the authentic charm of smaller towns and the dynamic opportunities of larger cities presents a significant decision, further complicated by the unexpected, often chilly weather in the north, challenging the stereotypical sunny Italian climate. Moreover, the linguistic landscape is rich with diverse dialects, making even fluent Italian speakers pause as they navigate local variations. This transition to life in Italy is a complex maze of cultural, climatic, and linguistic challenges, blending the dream of dolce vita with the reality of navigating a deeply rooted and intricate Italian society. Why I'm Leaving Portugal

Why I'm Leaving Portugal

Embarking on the journey of living abroad, particularly in European countries like Portugal, encapsulates a spectrum of experiences and challenges unique to expat life. Key considerations include navigating the rising cost of living, especially in urban areas, and understanding the healthcare system, which can be marked by long waiting times and occasional staff shortages. Transportation in densely populated cities adds another layer of complexity for those contemplating car ownership amidst traffic congestion. Language immersion also becomes a pivotal aspect, as the prevalence of English speakers may limit opportunities for deep cultural integration and language practice. Additionally, for expatriates with entrepreneurial ambitions, the business environment in Europe, and specifically in Portugal, presents its own set of hurdles with complex regulations and potentially high operational costs. In this expat podcast episode of "Not Your Average Globetrotter," hosted by Rafael Di Furia, these multifaceted aspects of moving and settling abroad are explored, highlighting the balance between the enchanting allure of a new country and the practical realities that shape the expat experience. I’m Moving Back To The USA - Why Expats Give Up

I’m Moving Back To The USA - Why Expats Give Up

Deciding to live abroad, particularly when considering moving back to the USA, encapsulates a complex blend of practical and emotional factors. For expats, the allure of native language comfort, familiar cultural norms, and potential career opportunities often weigh against the challenges of adjusting to a different lifestyle and higher living costs. This pivotal decision in an expat's life requires balancing the ease of established systems, like credit history, with the emotional toll of leaving behind known environments and friends. Ultimately, choosing between staying abroad or moving back to the US hinges on personal priorities, the willingness to adapt, and the pursuit of a balanced expat life. Americans Escaping Portugal and Going Back Home

Americans Escaping Portugal and Going Back Home

The Portuguese government's decision to end the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax scheme brings significant implications for expats living in Portugal and those considering moving to Portugal. The NHR scheme, a major draw for expatriates seeking financial advantages, played a crucial role in attracting foreign investment and skills, thereby boosting the local economy. However, its termination may lead to a reassessment among expats, who might explore relocating to other tax-friendly European destinations. This change could impact Portugal's real estate market and local businesses, which had grown accustomed to the expat community. For those contemplating a move to Portugal or living abroad in Europe, this highlights the importance of considering factors beyond financial incentives, including cultural adaptation and long-term residency plans. The situation serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of expat life and the necessity for thorough research and flexibility when planning to move and settle in a new country. Moving Abroad Won't Make You Happy

Moving Abroad Won't Make You Happy

Exploring new horizons by moving to a different country often stems from the pursuit of happiness and self-discovery. However, this journey is more about internal growth than geographical change. True contentment arises from within, and while a new environment offers fresh perspectives, it's not the sole happiness determinant. Such a move invites introspection, revealing personal facets in the absence of familiar routines. Challenges like cultural adaptation and rebuilding social networks emphasize the importance of effective communication and local language skills. The experience also prompts a re-evaluation of values and perspectives, especially noticeable upon returning home. Therefore, considering such a life-changing decision requires realistic expectations, thorough research, and perhaps extended stays in the intended location, underscoring that happiness and self-discovery are processes transcending physical locations. Why is Portugal SO Popular with Expats? Should it be?

Why is Portugal SO Popular with Expats? Should it be?

Portugal has become a hotspot for Americans, and it's not just about the sun and sea. While the serene beaches of the Algarve and the picturesque greenery of the north are definite draws, there's more to the story. The political atmosphere on the other side of the pond has some seeking the calm of Portugal's shores. Diving into the local culture is a rewarding journey, though it comes with challenges, especially when dealing with a different bureaucratic landscape. And then there's the allure of European citizenship, a tempting prospect for many. All these elements combine to make Portugal a top choice for many Americans looking for a change... but is Portugal the place they think it is?

The END of NHR in Portugal?

The END of NHR in Portugal?

There have been recent concerns regarding the NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) tax regime in Portugal. The Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, mentioned in an interview that the NHR might be coming to an end, causing panic among potential expats and those interested in Portugal. The NHR is not a permanent tax status, and for some may not be worth being concerned, however others may find this could significantly impact their interest in Portugal. The current NHR regime offers an advantageous tax rate for a period of 10 years. While it benefits some, others might find the "regular" Portuguese tax regime more favorable. In this moving to Portugal expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia, we'll look at what to take into consideration with the NHR and these new considerations... Things That No Longer Faze Me After Living in Europe

Things That No Longer Faze Me After Living in Europe

Embarking on a European adventure, one is immediately greeted by the culture of public smoking, a practice that might initially shock newcomers but soon blends into the daily scenery. This is just the tip of the iceberg; the real essence of European lifestyle unfolds gradually. As you delve deeper, the bureaucratic maze emerges, teaching lessons in patience and adaptability with every step. The rhythm of life here has a unique beat, sometimes slowed down by a sudden train strike, yet the promise of exploration keeps the excitement alive. The ease of traversing through diverse cultures and landscapes, each with its unique flavor and quirks, is like turning the pages of a live history book. The culinary journey too, is a mixed bag. While the fresh pastries are a comforting embrace, the shift towards a more global food culture is palpable. And then there's the casual dance with time, especially noticeable in the southern part of europe, where life seems to pause allowing one to savor the moments. Working in Portugal - An Overview of Living in Portugal

Working in Portugal - An Overview of Living in Portugal

Considering working in Portugal? The country offers more than just picturesque landscapes and a relaxed lifestyle. However, it's essential to delve into the practicalities before making the move. For instance, the cost of living has been on the rise, particularly in urban centers like Lisbon. While the minimum wage might seem modest, especially by Western standards, there are plans to increase it in the coming years. But will that align with the lifestyle you're hoping for?

When it comes to job opportunities, southern Europe may not be the ideal starting point for young professionals. Yet, the rise of remote work is changing the dynamics, making Portugal an increasingly attractive option for those who can work from anywhere.

Taxes are another crucial consideration. Portugal offers specific schemes like the Non-Habitual Resident program, but the benefits may not be universally applicable. It's a complex topic that often requires professional advice.

Lifestyle choices will also impact your monthly expenses. Dining out, for example, can range from affordable to high-end, depending on your preferences. And if you're thinking about opening a bank account, be prepared for a process that's a bit more involved than simply walking into a bank.

So, is Portugal the right fit for you? There are multiple factors to consider, from potential earnings to the kind of lifestyle you envision. More insights are on the way, so stay tuned for a deeper dive into what it's like to live and work in Portugal.

In this episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, hosted by Rafael Di Furia, we'll take a look at the complexities and considerations of working and living in Portugal, from the rising cost of living and minimum wage to job opportunities, taxes, and lifestyle choices.

Why Expats Fail and Move Back Home

Why Expats Fail and Move Back Home

Living abroad can be a thrilling journey, but it's not without its challenges. How can you navigate cultural differences, language barriers, and the temptation to stick to old habits? How can you truly immerse yourself in a new environment living abroad without losing your sense of self?

In my 14 years of expat life and life abroad, I've learned some valuable lessons about flexibility, openness, and the importance of local connections. I've discovered that the key to a successful expat experience lies not just in surviving, but in thriving and making the most of the opportunities that come your way.

But how do you strike a balance between preparation and taking the plunge? How do you avoid the 'expat bubble' and truly engage with the local culture? And how do you navigate the fine line between holding onto your roots and embracing new habits after moving abroad and living overseas? Giving Birth Abroad - Living in Portugal & Expat Life

Giving Birth Abroad - Living in Portugal & Expat Life

Navigating the healthcare system in Portugal as an expat living in Portugal, particularly when expecting a baby, involves understanding the importance of health insurance and the intricacies of local medical practices. For some, cultural nuances, such as the unique naming conventions in Portugal, can be a significant consideration. Living abroad and enjoying expat life for some may even come along with the process of registering a newborn's birth, a unique experience that not all will have to experience. The concept of dual citizenship also comes into play, with the bureaucratic procedures involved in reporting a birth to multiple countries. The complexities of these experiences can highlight the challenges and rewards of starting a family abroad. In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia, we'll talk with second-time guests Kathleen and Richard Lo (from Bordr.com) about their recent experience of having a child while living in Portugal. 🎥 To learn more about Kathleen and Richard and their business Bordr be sure to check out their previous episode on Not Your Average Globetrotter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzqLcJu7lXQ&list=PLyMrEud0Cd58PIoWnpXTPhCJ2W7fyev0n 🇵🇹 Fo rmore about their assistance services to get your NIF (Portuguese Tax Number) and Portuguese Bank Account: Website - https://www.bordr.io/nyag Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/bordrhq Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/bordrhq 🔜 Also, be sure to check out https://bordr.io/labs to see their services that will be launching soon If you find my videos helpful, entertaining and/or if you feel as if I've helped you save time, headaches, or legal fees, please consider making a monthly pledge on Patreon and becoming a monthly patron to help make more videos like this possible: 👉🏽 http://RafaelDiFuria.com/patreon Or, if you would like to help in a different way and make a one-time donation you can visit: 👉🏽 http://RafaelDiFuria.com/support NYAG Gear - http://store.rafaeldifuria.comhttp://RafaelDiFuria.com/nyaggear If you would be interested in dedicating a video to a loved one and/or sponsoring a video, feel free to send a message through the following link: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/contact/ 📬 Let's connect 🔵Instagram: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/instagram 🔵Facebook: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/facebook 🔵Twitter: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/twitter 🔵Email: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/contact/ 📩 Business Inquiries and Collaborations: http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com/contact/ 🎙Want me to be the voice of your business? http://www.RafaelDiFuria.com//contact

How I see the USA After 14 years of Living Abroad & Expat Life

How I see the USA After 14 years of Living Abroad & Expat Life

After 14 years of living abroad and enjoying expat life, I wanted to talk a bit about how I see the US now... This week, we'll be taking a look at the USA through an Expat lens... Is the U.S. truly the "leader of the free world", or is that just a perception we've grown accustomed to? One of many topics that are worth thinking about is the education system. Does it really prepare us for life, or is it more about scoring high on tests?

What about healthcare access? Is it as straightforward as it seems, or are there nuances we're missing when comparing American Healthcare with European Healthcare? Another important factor to consider is safety and quality of life, is the U.S. the gold standard, or are there elements of community and culture that we're overlooking in comparison with overseas?

We'll also touch on the topic of zoning. Is it just a mundane urban planning concept, or does it have deeper implications for our lifestyle and mobility? Finally, we'll take a look at the geographical isolation of North America. Is it just a geographical fact, or could it be shaping our understanding of the world in ways we don't realize? There's a lot to unpack, and these are the conversations that need to be had.

In this expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, hosted by me, Rafael Di Furia, I'll share how I view the US and American culture and lifestyle in comparison with the culture and lifestyle in Europe and elsewhere having been abroad for more than 14 years, questioning everything from its global leadership role and education system to healthcare access, safety standards, connections in local communities, cultural rituals, and the implications of its geographical isolation.

Expat Life is a LIE

Expat Life is a LIE

Alright, let's dive right into the nitty-gritty of expat life. There's a lot of talk about living abroad, but let's face it, not everything you hear is the gospel truth. So, let's get real for a moment. Before packing those bags, it’s crucial to do some serious research. Know what you’re getting into, because the cost of living isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be. It varies, depending on where you’re headed and how you like to live.... On the topic of languages though, don’t assume you can get by with English alone in non-English speaking countries. It’s essential to learn the local language (and customs) if you want to truly be part of the community. And let’s squash that myth right now – living abroad is not a never-ending vacation. It’s life, just in a different place. Feeling lonely? That’s part of the package when moving to another country. It’s normal, especially in the beginning. But use that time wisely. And don’t get thrown off by cultural differences. What’s logical in one place might not make sense in another. In this living abroad expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, we'll take a no-nonsense look at expat life. Living Abroad - The Small Things Matter

Living Abroad - The Small Things Matter

Sometimes the smallest things, like the ease of using your own name, can make a big difference when living abroad. Of course, this is an extreme example, but there are many little things that can pile up throughout your expat experience after moving abroad. Before making a decision to rent or buy property in another country, spending time living there fully embracing expat life to understand the day-to-day realities is crucial. This is because vacationing in a place often doesn’t provide the full picture of what it’s like to actually live there. The importance of work-life balance is also necessary to consider. For example, in the United States there’s often an emphasis on hustle culture, which can be detrimental to work-life balance. In contrast, other parts of the world might offer more opportunities for a balanced life. However, it's important to recognize that what one person finds appealing in a location might not be the same for someone else due to different lifestyles and preferences and needs. Ultimately, understanding personal limits and what’s needed for a fulfilling life is essential in making such life-altering decisions.

Digital Nomad Life vs Expat Life - Absurd Fantasies?

Digital Nomad Life vs Expat Life - Absurd Fantasies?

Living the digital nomad life or choosing the expat life is a journey filled with excitement, discovery, and challenges. The allure of constantly changing landscapes, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures is undeniable. However, it's not always as glamorous as it seems. The transient nature of relationships, the struggle to find a sense of belonging, and the occasional feelings of loneliness and disconnection are realities that often go unnoticed. On the flip side, choosing to live abroad as an expat offers its own unique experiences. It's about investing in a place long-term, building lasting relationships, and becoming part of a local community. It's about creating a home away from home. The practical aspects, such as the cost of moving frequently and the benefits of having a stable base, are also part of this journey. It's important to remember that while the digital nomad lifestyle may be a dream for some, it's not the right choice for everyone. It's about understanding personal needs and circumstances before making the leap into life abroad or a digital nomad journey. In this living abroad expat life podcast of Not Your Average Globetrotter we'll talk about the digital nomad lifestyle vs expat life and how they involve embracing the excitement of new experiences, acknowledging the challenges of transient relationships and finding community, and considering personal needs before embarking on the journey of living abroad. I Regret Moving Abroad To The Live Expat Life

I Regret Moving Abroad To The Live Expat Life

Embarking on a journey abroad can be a thrilling adventure, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and considerations such as the complexities of living abroad, particularly the emotional and practical aspects that often go unnoticed. While there may be moments of doubt or longing for what was left behind, these feelings are often outweighed by the learning experiences gained from living in a different culture. But what is 'home' and how it evolves when one moves abroad? Emotional and physical investment required to create a sense of belonging in a new place, but while it can be quite rewarding, it’s most definitely challenging. Along with emotional investment, there are also the financial implications of moving abroad, such as costs associated with setting up a new home and the potential impact on savings. Social aspects of living abroad form another crucial part of the conversation. Potential barriers to forming relationships in a new country, such as language differences and cultural misunderstandings, are discussed. Yet, living abroad can provide unique opportunities for personal growth and cultural immersion, such as the chance to form deep connections with people from different backgrounds. What about the impact of living abroad on romantic relationships? Moving to a new country can put a strain on a relationship, but such experiences also have the potential to strengthen the bond between partners. Being single in a foreign country brings its own set of challenges and opportunities, expat problems and expat regrets. Then there's the concept of opportunity, both in terms of personal experiences and career prospects. Living abroad can offer unique experiences, such as attending local events or participating in cultural traditions. However, moving to a new country can also present potential career challenges, such as the need to learn a new language or adapt to a different work culture. In this living abroad expat life podcast of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by Rafael Di Furia, the complexities of living abroad are explored, providing a view of the challenges and opportunities that come with this life-changing decision. Why I Won't Move To The USA - American Expat Life

Why I Won't Move To The USA - American Expat Life

Living abroad for 14 years has given me a unique perspective on the country that I come from. Even though I've been far removed from the goings on I've always kept up with what is happening there and have challenged myself on whether expat life is the right life for me, or would moving to the United States be a better choice. I believe it's important to take a look at the financial aspects of life abroad and in this episode, I'll bring up some comparisons specifically in regard to the cost of living in Portugal compared to the US, and the resulting implications for work-life balance. But as an American abroad, there are some elements I also can't help but look at such as the American work ethic, credit scores, and opportunities for small business. Yet while there are positives that are possible to look at, there are approaches to life I feel are more common to find among certain cultures. One such problem that unfortunately, I find more among many Americans is how material pursuits can overshadow some of life's most meaningful moments and details that can be missed. In this expat living abroad podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter hosted by me, Rafael Di Furia, will take a critical exploration of American dynamics from an expat's perspective.
