It's Okay to Ask for Help: Postpartum and Self Care
Bonnie Kerker, MPH, PhD, with the New York University Grossman School of Medicine, researches adverse and positive experiences that families face and the impact those experiences have on young children as well as how to mitigate the adverse experiences. She joins us this week to talk about postpartum depression, asking for help, self care, and more. Dr. Kerker worked on an intervention that adapted the postpartum depression prevention intervention, Reach Out and Stay Strong, Essentials for new Mothers (ROSE) in shelter. The adapted intervention was called Strong in Shelter (SIS).

Jennifer has been working since 2002 to help students experiencing homelessness get access to the educational services and other supports they need to succeed in school.

AFC also works to change education policy so that the public school system serves ALL children of New York City effectively.

To see your child’s attendance, report cards, bus route information, special education services and more, create a NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) (see this Set Up Guide for Parents).
NOTE: you need an email address to set up an account and a “creation code” for your child, which you can get from their school or the Dept of Education worker at your shelter.

To see where your child’s school bus is in real time, use the NYC School Bus App on your phone (download from the Apple store or Google play).
NOTE: you need to set up a NYCSA account to use the NYC School Bus App.
To request services for a student in temporary housing, ask the Parent Coordinator at your child’s school about Title I STH funding. All schools get Title I STH funding to support students in temporary housing. This funding can be used for tutoring, counseling, clothing (school uniform, gym clothes, winter jacket, winter boots, etc.), hygiene supplies, emergency food, school supplies, laundry supplies.
To request a shelter transfer closer to your child’s school, ask your shelter case manager.

En este episodio estamos con Edith que a estado en violencia domestica. Ella estaba confundida en lo que pasaba. Solo el preceso fue dificil, los trabajaores sociales la hizo sentir que era culpa de ella. apesar de todo lo que ella paso s tuvo que quedar adonde la estaban maltratando. encima de todo eso fue llama por su acosador desde la carcel. ella no dice que estaba por dejar el proceso a donde estaba solo por que el sistema era bien duro. Todo esto le a sido dificil apesar de todo pero ahora ella tiene apoyo y con terapia la ayuda. Ella dice que se siente mas confiada de ella mimsa apersar de todo lo que ella a vivido. Edith dice que todo este proceso de estar en esta situacion le dio anciedad. ella menciona que todo esto le afecto mucho que perdio todo mentalmente. no se recordaba que tenia sus hijias. Y cuando fue recuperandose queria saber lo que pasa.

Gina de new destiny y su role en violencia domestica
En este episodio estamos con Gina Cappuccitti y ella trabaja con nuevo destino (new destiny). Ella habla en como llego a su puesto de trabajo y las oportunidades y servicios que su grupo brindan a la comunidad de nueva york. Ella nos dice como la violencia domestica affectan a mucho de los residentes de Nueva York. Ella tambien nos habla de un programa que se llama EHP (programa de vivienda de ermegencias) es un tipo de seccion 8 que fue lanzado por el American Rescue Plan (el plan de rescate americano) en el 2021. En este tiempo hubo una ola de vale de viviendas que fue abierta por referidos en Nueva York hubo 8,000 vales de viviendas y 1,268 que fue destinados a victimas de violencia domestica ques estaban ulliendo de una situacion de violencia domestica. Ella menciona que brindan apoyo con otros servicios para que que esten mas estables y con la ayuda de hpd (departamneto de vivienda preventacion) y hra (la oficina de welfare) que le puede dar una ayuda. Aunque en en el momento los vale de vivienda no estan recibiendo mas referido. ademas de todo, ella tambien menciona housing link. Housing link es un realojamiiento rapido.

We are looking for a dynamic individual with lived experience in the homeless system to join our coalition as leaders in setting the agenda for positive change in eviction prevention, shelter services, housing supports and more. This is a paid, part time position that pays $35 per hour for 12 hours a week.
