Icons, Fractal Selves, and Persons as Gemstones of Reality w/Thomas Jockin

I really enjoyed this conversation with Thomas Jockin on icons in the social media age, fractal selves, and persons as gemstones of reality. We also dove into how devotion can help bring discernment and clarity to the question of how to properly engage with icons and embody the icon in our image saturated world. Thomas will be hosting a in-person Salon to discuss Plato’s Greater Hippias at The Bardo on Atlanta, Georgia March 8th. Please check it out with the link below https://www.eventbrite.com/e/salon-discussion-on-the-beautiful-in-platos-greater-hippias-tickets-815843037487?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl You can also find Thomas’s work on YouTube. https://youtube.com/@jockt967?si=XhtxsLvW-KYZ5Iqz Thank you for your time Thomas!

Self-Degradation and Technology with Sanduni Steinitz

Self-Degradation and Technology with Sanduni Steinitz

It’s always a joy to speak with Sanduni on any and all topics. On this episode, Sandy and I discuss the pros and cons of cell phones and how our disposition toward technology also relates to our propensity of self-degradation. Another point we touched on is how our habits form our habitats and how we often get stuck in our own heads and why this self-enclosure can create a cozy torture (I smell jouissance), thus making it hard to identify that anything needs to change. We hope you enjoy this conversation!

“Owning Your Own Shadow” by Robert A. Johnson w/Amar Numanovic

“Owning Your Own Shadow” by Robert A. Johnson w/Amar Numanovic

I really enjoyed this conversation with Amar Numanovic concentrating on themes and ideas related to the book “Own Your Own Shadow” by Robert A. Johnson. We discuss how uncomfortable it is to face the unpleasant qualities of ourselves that we typically relegate to the shadow but how unbelievably important it is to look those qualities in the eyes and to redeem them. If not, we allow the shadow to control our lives without our conscious realizing of why we keep repeating the same things again and again. We also risk the spontaneous eruption of our shadow attributes, which is destructive and poisonous with no balance of the constructive. In contrast, we discuss doing the conscious work of dealing with the shadow so that it doesn’t become someone else’s problem and instead becomes a creative, restorative, and productive integration of our light and our shadow, where we consciously link the destructive and the constructive. The book and this conversation gave me such a better and more practical understanding of shadow work. I hope you will check it out and please also check out Amar’s Spotify and Substack, you can also find him on Instagram where he shares great content that always sparks in me the desire to do the work @amarnumann. Love from a Philosophical Angle w/Emilio Manzanares Brito

I really enjoyed this conversation with Emilio, in which we discussed the most existential and life altering experiences; love. Love is a risk of course because it always hold the potential for heartbreak; we talk more about the phenomenology of heartache, the difference between falling in love vs to love someone, and how love is a far more nuanced and complex concept than in the movies, of which only glorify the chase. Please check out Emilio’s wonderful Substack, where he explores metacognition which allows us to understand how to do stuff and metaconcepts that expand the things we can do; https:/ourlittlegame.substack.com/

“When the Body Says No” by Gabor Mate w/Ethan Nelson

I really enjoyed this talk with Ethan Nelson about the topic of need and ideas that he learned from the book “When the Body Says No” by Gabor Mate. Needs are never in a vacuum but are rather in a nexus and so they are much more nuanced than we like to think. We get into this and much more. Please check out Ethan’s podcast Becoming Conscious, Ethan also has a great Substack as well; his article on Mate’s book is what prompted the talk. Thank you again so much for your time Ethan. The Philosophy of Timing, Caputo’s Perhaps, and Derrida’s Insistence on New Forms of Subjectivity

I really enjoyed this conversation with Javier Rivera on his recent work on the Philosophy of Timing. Please check out his series on this topic here; youtu.be/uU83uDffF_w . We also reference a footnote in “The Prayers and Tears of Jacques Derrida” by Caputo. Why does it make a difference to develop the concept of timing vs time? What does timing have to do with subjectivity? What does discourse have to do with deconstructing subjectivity? How does technology permutate our discourse? These questions and more explored in our talk! Enjoy 🎉

The Spell of the Sensuous by David Abram, Language, and Technology with Molly O’Leary

Really lovely to speak with Molly O’Leary on a recent book she read, The Spell of the Sensuous by Abram. We discuss related topics such as the revealing and concealing of nature, the harshness of the Internet landscape, and how language relates to our connection and disconnection. Some notable quotes mentioned by Molly are from ‘Field Poetics’ by Krieder and O’Leary and Rachel Carson on sea slugs; ‘Without a brain, or what we would call a memory, or even any very clear perception, Convoluta continues to live out its life in this alien place, remembering, in every fibre of its small green body, the tidal rhythm of the distant sea.' Atlas Shrugged Part 3 with Bethany Tabor

Here Bethany and I wrap up our 4 episode series about Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand’s 1957 masterpiece of a novel. We had a wonderful conversation discussing Part 3 and the end of the novel, focusing on Galt’s Gulch; how it relates to Nietzsche’s Zarathustra descending into the valley, to the meaning of the mountain as an esoteric symbol, and to Christian themes. Bethany also describes how Galt’s Gulch harkens, almost like a premonition, to the “The Network State” by Balaji Srinivasan. We also discuss the cottagecore vibes of Galt’s Gulch. Enjoy!🍄 PS: To read Bethany’s writing, please subscribe to her substack; https://open.substack.com/pub/bethanybtabor?r=lm9mc&utm_medium=ios

Atlas Shrugged Part 2 with Bethany Tabor

Here Bethany and I talk about Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand’s 1957 masterpiece of a novel. We had a wonderful conversation discussing the great “money speech” in Part 2 as well as the literary atmosphere achieved by Rand’s writing. We also talk about a key symbol in the book as well as self-generating value and Earthy transcendence, touching on how Rand’s project is so akin to the work of Nietzsche and why that matters. As a heads up, we do discuss specific plot points from the book. Enjoy 🤑 PS: To read Bethany’s writing, please subscribe to her substack; https://open.substack.com/pub/bethanybtabor?r=lm9mc&utm_medium=ios

Is there a “Soul Mate”? with my Soul Sister Sanduni Mudiyanse

Sanduni Mudiyanse always brings wonderful and fresh ideas to the table. It was lovely discussing the question of is there is such a thing as “the one”. We dove into why the concept of soul mate often loses its soul leaving people as mere mates and also why, to speak to Esther Perel’s work, we’ve put the roles of a whole village on one person, as “the one”. We leave with an important cliffhanger question, which we’ll address in part 2!

Atlas Shrugged Part 1 (2nd) with Bethany Tabor

Here we discuss some of our favorite scenes and ideas from Part 1 of Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand (continued from last week). We dig into the difference between entitlement and self-generating value, how politics relate to the family, and how the book speaks to free time and consumerism. Some plot details are revealed. We begin with a brief note on the Earth’s seasons and how they are so inextricable from us. Hope you’ll check it out!
