Hullo and welcome to the oikos family podcast season 2 episode 24. I’m sonja wood and am so happy you joined me today, thank you.

In todays podcast I’m going to share a story with you from the Tiger and Tom audiobook ….it is called A faithful shepherd boy. If you are wanting to teach your children the importance of loyalty, trust, respect ….and more, then when you listen to the story I am sure you will glean these values from it and whatever is else may be pertinent to you.

This is precisely why I am sharing these stories with you because I so deeply believe there is something of value in each one, for any listener, and for me personally, I found them to be a wonderful parent support tool. I shared about that in the previous podcast so I won’t repeat myself but I do mind saying this again, these short stories which I am choosing specifically to share with you, are stories which teach morals and ethics which are so vital in these times. Just the other day I said to our son the following ….“it may seem to us that characteristics such as respect and honour have died, which is all the more reason we must do all we can to keep them alive.”

And that is what I hope these short stories, shared with you, help to achieve…..to keep the valuable characteristics alive!

So here is …A faithful shepherd boy, narrated by James Wood.

Hi there, and welcome to the Oikos Family Podcast season 2 episode 23

I always think of Psalm 23 whenever I write or say 23. In fact 23 has become quite an important number to us personally and has carried over into Oikos. I will put some links to where I share more about why this number 23 has such value to us and perhaps you can pick up some ideas for your family, but for today I am excited to let you know that I am starting a little series here on the podcast which follows on from previous podcasts where I was sharing the short stories from the Oikos Ministry Messages booklet.

This next series I’m going to be sharing with you continues to follow the theme of ministry messages. We have produced two audio books which have about 40 or so short stories in each and every one of the stories is specially written to share a moral, message, ethic, or whatever you want to take from it. It could be something other, for example an encouragement, or a helping hand. The helping hand these stories where for me in parenting is that I would find a specific lesson from a particular story which I could then share with whoever it was that I thought it may be of help to. For example if one of the children was showing unkind behaviour I would find a story in these short story collections and read it aloud and then use the story, and the characters in the story, to teach the importance of being kind without signalling out a specific child.

This became a ‘go to’ tool for me in parenting and I noticed good results from it as everyone would have heard the same story and then when any bad behaviours arose, the characters of the story and the consequences they endured due to that behaviour, could be discussed, rather than a specific child in the family feeling bad about themselves, everyone could help one another towards better choices.

So, I will be sharing some of these stories, not all 40 of course, but I will pick a few and share them in these podcasts. They are between 3-10.  minutes each, so I hope that even if you as the parent just listens to them (or you could share them with the family) and then have the story in your heart, or hearts, you may find the story, or stories helpful to share it if the need arises. Basically I do hope that these short stories will be an additional helpful tool in your parenting toolbox.

So for now I’m going to say ‘bye for now’,

Thank you for listening.

2023 A New Year

Hi there, I’m sonja wood, thank you for joining me on this season 2 episode 14 of our Oikos family podcast.

While pondering over the end of 2022 and what I would like to share with you I was reminded of the moms testimonies which we filmed back in July 2017.

Wow, that now seems like a long time ago. Anyway, one of the moms shared with us how she struggled with having a temper and found herself yelling at her children and she didn’t like that and wanted to change it.

I found her testimony to be so powerful and helpful so I thought that it would be good to tell you about it, as well as letting you know of the other videos which we produced of mothers sharing their testimonies of their home education journey. Each one is naturally unique to each mom so I feel sure you will find something which you can relate to and therefor I hope that you will find them helpful. I will put the playlist link for these mothers testimonies in the description.

With the 2022 behind us, it’s a good time to take what we can from 2022 and leave what we don’t want to take into 2023 behind us.

On a personal note I would like to take into 2023 joy and strength and a heart filled with thanksgiving even though 2022 has been a tough year, we have so, so much to be thankful for and who knows what 2023 has in store, so I would rather embrace the new year with a heart full of hope instead of anxiety and fear of the unkown.

I feel now to share something personal with you.

We had some experiences during 2022 which I definitely do not want to have again in 2023…..one such experience being that we had 5 burglaries in the space of 10 months. So what we going to do is take into 2023 what we have instead of being downhearted about what we don’t have.Things’ were stolen but if we allow peace, joy, hope and strength to be stolen too then that is theft upon theft ….so instead we going to be thankful that we still have joy, peace, strength and hope….so we won’t allow that to be stolen too and so we head into 2023 with SO much and the things we no longer have (the things which were stolen) do not matter because what does matter and what we truly do need, we still have.

So I do hope that as you and your family prepare for new beginnings that you will be encouraged to be strong, to keep smiling….to smile at your child and have joy in your home.

Remember JOY = STRENGTH

So joy and strength I share with you…..because I have it to share….it was not stolen.

Abundant blessings to you…..thank you for lending me your ears …..I appreciate your time and feel very blessed to have had this privileged time to share with you. Thank you

Bye for now.

S2/E13 - KONOS - The Results

S2/E13 - KONOS - The Results

Hi there, thank you for joining me on this season 2 episode 13 of our Oikos family podcast.

I’m Sonja Wood and today I have this question for you.

Are you wanting to see specific kinds of results from KONOS?

Over the years I have heard from parents that they do not see the results they looking for when doing KONOS. I then ask them to define the kind of results they are referring to and in every case I hear that they find the children do not necessarily remember what the parent hopes they will recall from the lessons. For example, the parts of the ear, or they can’t label the flower correctly or they don’t understand measurements from an activity they had done.

  1. Where are you looking for results, are you perhaps looking in the wrong place?
  2. What results would God be looking for and what is important to Him with regard to results?
  3. Is the learning process resulting in character building and fun learning memories?

I appreciated and value the parent manual I had to help me as a mom to keep my focus on doing activities which kept us on track with character training and fun learning. That is why I am sharing it on these podcasts because the KONOS volumes were just that for me, parent manuals…..to help us ALL grow our characters. A mom told me just this morning that she just does not have enough patience ….and I said, “try doing patience with KONOS, you are sure to grow in patience, but also try watch the video about how a mom who was struggling with patience and what she did about it.”

S2/E12 - KONOS - What it is NOT

S2/E12 - KONOS - What it is NOT

Transcript:

Hi there,

In episode 10 I touched on some of the points regarding the topic of KONOS. I said I would dive deeper into each one and discuss it here with you. So point number 2 from episode 10 was

Trying desperately to make it be something it is NOT….for example a curriculum that you follow rather than a parent tool to assist in raising, shaping, moulding characters AND have FUN while learning.

KONOS can be used as a formal educational instructional knowledge imparting manual….because it has a LOT within it which can give just that but where it’s true value lies is in it being a parent resource for the training and moulding of character.

Let me illustrate this in the following way.

Let us take the topic of authority. In the KONOS manual in the unit for obedience there is a section on teaching children about authority systems and structures in the world….eg, police, governments etc…..the purpose for teaching the children about this is for them to learn about authority and the importance of obedience to authority, starting with them being obedient to their parents who are put into a position of authority over them for their own safety and care…..then take that further into other authorities and the importance of obedience etc

However what can (and does) happen is parents get so caught up in the formal lessons of knowledge and facts (which are maybe facts today but may not be facts when the children reach adult life) even so parents become so focussed on the teaching of knowledge that they miss the greater purpose and focus and that being training and instilling the Importance of obedience to authority.

So KONOS living then become a stress and overwhelms parents instead of it being a journey of a learning lifestyle where the family members are growing together in character while they learn about the importance of obedience …..and while they growing this character trait by way of doing activities and so shaping their characters while at the same time building memories and experiences which solidify the importance of a specific character trait but at the same time they are receiving the by-product of the more academic knoweldge based learning even though that was not the primary objective to begin with.

So, I hope that example clarifies - what KONOS it is not….because it is not about formal academic learning but it is about the training of character and the academics happen alongside as a bonus - byproduct …..

Thank you for joining me today

I look forward to sharing more on this topic with you in the next podcast.

Bye for now

S2/E11 - KONOS Stress (Social Study Subjects)

S2/E11 - KONOS Stress (Social Study Subjects)

Transcript:

Hi there, thanking you for joining me on this episode 11 of the season 2 Oikos family ministries podcasts.

In episode 10, I touched on the sensitive topic of the KONOS strain and stress some parents are experiencing.

I would like to chat a bit about this.

Let me start with this. Over the years, here at Oikos, we have had many moms retreats where I discovered that a lot of moms did not have the confidence they wanted in certain areas and consequently they did not feel equipped to teach their own children in these areas….therefore they did not believe in themselves and therefore they lacked conviction that they could do this. This being, maths, science, art, music…..whichever area it was that they felt lacking in. So where did we go from there….I would take them to Gods Word, their very own Creator, and remind them that they are perfectly and wonderfully made in His image and He does not make mistakes and so can they take a hold of that and believe it with their whole heart soul and mind, as He asks us to, and then they will step into this very place of where they are feeling a lack and be able to believe and trust and walk in faith knowing that it is possible.

So…..once we were there…..at this new place of believing, then the conviction can come, then bold choices can be made, with conviction and belief.

The reason I talk about this is because once a parent believes in the value of KONOS being about the lifestyle, the importance of our focus being on raising and training those whom HE has created to be equipped for ‘whatever life throws at them’….as I mentioned in episode 10, and that one of the many values of home education is the opportunities presented to parents to do just that and then one such opportunity is a resource called KONOS which helps the focus be about just that and then the parent begins to see other fruit as a by product…such as academic excellence…..well IF, it can all start with believing in it and being convicted by that then the strain and stress is gone….it is replaced with joy and fun……really…..it can be so…..just speak to others who hav experienced it as such.

Years ago I made a suggestion at a moms retreat for the moms to take on the KONOS challenge by means of them committing to living KONOS by putting aside all the other ‘things’ so as to give this lifestyle of KONOS a chance to show them what can result. It was very easy for some moms to grab a hold of that and extremely difficult for others, however the ones that it was so very difficult for still talk about it today as being the best thing they ever did, these are moms whose children are now all in their adult lives.

So I’m going to leave this here….this particular topic of conviction, and I will put in the show notes and description some links to various moms testimonies on this topic.

Hi there, thanking you for joining me on this episode 10 of the season 2 Oikos family ministries podcasts.

I am glad you did because I would like to share with you more on the KONOS topic. I received an email from a mom a couple of days ago where she shared with me her heartache regarding her very stressful, strained and tearful year of home educating. My heart ached for her, and then…. it began to sing ! I will tell you why.

This mom shared in her letter that she had spent some time watching videos on the Oikos YouTube channel and found that the Oikos lifestyle, most specifically KONOS LIVING, is what they would like to embark on for their continued home education journey. I was VERY PLEASED to read this because this is precisely why I am putting a focus on these podcasts to share KONOS living because the experience of this lifestyle can be so very different to one of stress, strain and tears.

However, I have also been hearing from some families that they have actually found strain while ‘trying to do KONOS LIVING’. And there is the problem right there. One does not have to try to do KONOS….it is more a case of adopting the lifestyle choice and then living it. If we were to liken it to say, changing your diet choices, cutting out sugar for example, that may initially put some strain on you but due to the conviction you may have about it and the result you want to achieve you will then adapt more easily than if you were not convicted about it.

So if you are one of those parents who is taking strain with KONOS living it could be due to a couple of things.

  1. Not being convicted by the lifestyle choice in the first instance
  2. Trying desperately to make it be something it is not….for example a curriculum that you follow rather than a parent tool to assist in raising, shaping, moulding characters AND have FUN while learning.
  3. Wanting to see specific kinds of results from your efforts and not seeing them.

I’m going to stop with those 3 points for now and dive deeper into each one in future podcasts.

For now….let me leave you with this, my heart conviction for sharing this lifestyle with you is because of the results, the fruits, which I have to share.

To have known a home educating lifestyle (from the birth of our children through to their adult lives) to have been an experience of fun, joy, treasured memories, loving learning….the list goes on, and then on top of that to see confident, equipped adults that are dealing with whatever life throws at them……..why would I not share this with parents who are traveling the home education road.

So thank you for being here…to listen to what I have to share with you. I will do the deeper dive regarding the points I made in this podcast in future podcasts. I hope you will join me again…..bye for now…till next time.

KONOS Manuals

Transcript:

Hi there, welcome to episode 9 of season two of our Oikos family ministries podcast series

In episode 8 I began sharing about the incredible value of KONOS and I mentioned that this is a topic I could speak a LOT about because of our years of experiencing such immense value, on so many levels, when it comes to KONOS living.

One value - which is foremost on so many minds during these strained economic times, is the sheer monetary value. Right now, in 2022, all three KONOS volumes would cost a family R 5900.00 and then add the timelines R 2685.00- (the timelines could be considered as world history from BC-AD, including biblical history.) So, it therefore cost a parent R 8500.0. for their family, all their children and themselves, for ALL social study subjects for ages toddler up to young adult. I’m sure you would agree that if we only look at this value, the monetary value, it is clear that this is great value because no other books need to be purchased for social study subjects. Whether a family has one child or more I think this maths speaks for itself. But this is only one of the values of KONOS.

The next value is what is derived from KONOS living.

These values are very comprehensively covered in the KONOS living workshop videos which anyone can watch for free on the oikos YouTube channel. I encourage parents to try and watch this series whether they choose to go with KONOS or not due to the parent help and equipping which is offered through this series. Why not equip yourself with more when it is available to you?

It only requires your time which I know is a valuable resource too.

I produced this series, and put the time into making them, because I so strongly believe in KONOS living ….. there is just such immense value in it, over and beyond the monetary saving….this, ‘over and beyond’ value is shared in the workshop videos.

So I suppose I should stop chatting to you here and encourage you to grab the time you can between your full schedule and try and watch through the KONOS workshop videos- I will put a link to them in the notes for quick access for you.

I’m sure you know by now (or perhaps this is the first time you are listening to an Oikos family podcast) our objective is not to try and sell you things but rather to offer what we have discovered to be of great value and then share it with you ….. so please understand that that is our aim and that is precisely why I’m sharing KONOS living with you, for that very reason….to help families have deeply valuable home education living for very little cost to their pockets but rich, rich value to the lives of their children and themselves. You have also probably gathered by now that due to us having lived KONOS, and having been so thoroughly blessed by it I am very, very passionate about passing those blessings on.

I hope the videos will help achieve that objective, to share the value and the blessings.

Thank you for listening, i appreciate your time.

Till next time, bye for now.

Transcript:

Hi there, welcome to episode 8 / season 2 of the OIKOS Family Podcast.

If you’ve been listening to the previous podcasts you will know that the focus has been to try find ways to bring value to you on your home educating journey.

Well I could do multiple podcasts (and maybe I will just) on the value of KONOS.

I have been thinking about it sooo much these past few years in that it is a resources for parents which can save them so so much and yet give such rich value. Just think about it, a resource which offers ALL the social study subjects, history, geography, …… for all the children in the family (and the parents) it is really quite incredible that with the 3 volumes of KONOS a family has such immense value with regard to rich education but even more than this is the fact that the focus throughout the KONOS living experience is character training and development.

The other day I was chatting with our adult son and we were discussing how often we are experiencing missing virtues in society today. He was expressing how absent basic characteristics seemed to be. We went on to reminisce over how much I valued having KONOS as a ‘parent tool’ to aid me in keeping focus and direction on the importance of character training and how much that is now assisting them in their lives now as adults.

This was just one of many conversations that we have had about the gift of KONOS, not only because of what I’ve just mentioned but also the many happy hours of learning while playing and doing which all built characteristics that at the time we did not realize the priceless value they would be later in life. Not only priceless but so necessary too.

So due to me doing the deep dive while looking for ways to share value with you I cannot leave KONOS out - I simply must share this with you - not only the incredible monetary value but also the priceless MORE that is found in these parent tools, the KONOS manuals.

I am very glad that we have produced a KONOS workshop series because a podcast simply does not do this topic justice but even so I wud like to keep sharing with you on this matter because I believe so whole heartedly in its value.

Thank you for listening / I appreciate your time and hope to bring you more findings from my deep dives.

Bye for now

Hi there, welcome to seasons 2 episode 7 of our Oikos Family Podcast.

As mentioned recently in previous podcasts we have been diving deeper to look for treasures to share with you.

Well, while doing a stock take this last week we found some ‘overruns’ of stock, which we are going to convert into a treasure for you!

I have also shared with you recently about bundles (in Episode 4), if you visit the Oikos site you will see that we have created bundles for you - and now that we have discovered these ‘overuns’ of stock we have bundled them to make them available to you at a 30% discount. Isn’t that amazing. The bundles are for Pre-Calculus and Calculus, even if you do not need these immediately they are going to be a big saving because it is highly unlikely that they will ever be available at this price again -and, and we also have discounted most of the board games. With the end of the year approaching so fast we are hoping families will invest in the development of their family board game library

So that is that for today….I hope the discounts will help you.

Hi there,

Welcome to season 2 episode 6 of our mini podcast series.

Thank you for joining me, I’m glad you did because I’m excited to share more with you along the lines of digging deeper to find ways to keep supporting you on your home educating journey.

I mentioned the Moore McGuffey readers in the last podcast and since then I have looked closer at them ‘I’ve dug deeper’ and done some maths and discovered this.

4 Moore McGuffey readers, books 1, 2, 3 and 4 will take your child from the very first steps of reading all the way up to university level of reading skills. It is just incredible, I think that is amazing. A family will need to spend about 5 or 600 Rand and they have reading skills development resources for the entire family for life. I’m not sure about you but I believe that is diving deeper to find great value.

My next mini podcast I plan on sharing the next thing I discover, so I can share great value with you after my deep dives.

Oh, I must tell you this before I go. When the pandemic hit in 2020 I was chatting to my brother one day and sharing with him how I felt as though I was sinking, he simply said, “I have some goggles and a snorkel you can use.” That simple statement changed my perspective….I started thinking about all that I could see from my underwater experience instead of feeling overwhelmed by the waters covering me, I felt excited instead of overwhelmed. Anyway….a few months later I asked him if he had some deep diving equipment I could borrow ! So here I am…..doing the deep dives ‘metaphorically speaking’ to search for treasures to share with you.

So till next time, thanks for listening …bye for now.

Hi there, I’m wondering if you have your ‘celebrate home education’ plans underway. I shared about that in the previous podcast.
Today I want to tell you that we have been creating bundles on the oikos store for you.

We trying ways to bring discounts and savings to you in your home educating journey.

We know that families are being effected by these hard economic times so we are looking at ways to keep offering support.

This is one of the reasons I have started this mini podcast series because I want to keep you informed as we adapt in ways which we hope you will be helpful to you.

We have begun bundling books together and will continue with that project if it proves to be helpful. It is a big undertaking to go through all the various categories to create bundles so do not be surprised when you find that not all categories are offering bundles.

I do hope and pray that you and your bundles of joy will have good, happy, home educating days and I shall be back soon with the next mini podcast. Thanks for joining me..bye for now.
