Getting Involved 2: Civic ACTIVISM and Joining a Civil Society
This is the second episode in our “Getting Involved” series, where we dive into the different ways, we as regular Malaysians can take part in the political system. Today we’re going to be going a little deeper and talking about how we can further push our ideas even in between election years through engaging in CIVIC ACTIVISM and joining CIVIL SOCIETIES.
We’ll be going through a few key topics.
1. What is Civic activism? (1:17)
2. Why are Civils Societies and Non-governmental Organizations important in our political system? (3:22)
3. How can you join a civil society? (7:15)
3 Steps to Join A Civil Society:
a. Find something you’re passionate about and look for an organisation centered around that field. There are so many different civil societies which focus on different areas from environmental activism, gender equality, humanitarian work, political accountability, education, mental health and many more. Ask yourself, what do you think is a major issue in Malaysia that you want to get involved in solving
b. Reach out and connect. Get in touch with them by email or call, from experience, most civil societies are keen to expand their footprint and will gladly entertain your calls. Remember they’re just as equally likely to want you involved as you want to be involved. Try and get a sense of what activities they do and what their organisations values are and try to figure out whether you’ll be a good fit
c. If it all checks out, let them know that you wanna be involved and ask to be added to a Whatsapp group or to see their list of scheduled events. Start by volunteering and going to these events.
