Second Chance: voices of the unheard

Second Chance: voices of the unheard

By Omar DeJesus

Facing 25 years to life in prison, I had to make a difficult choice, which was taking a plea of 13 years in prison—using my time wisely; earning a degree from New York University (PEP). I interview formerly incarcerated men and women, guilty or innocent, being granted a second chance at freedom. The lack of education is linked to mass incarceration. Also, I will touch on topics that will enlighten you. Here's a fact- the USA is the leading country on mass incarceration, putting a value on our citizens for monetary gains and disbanding people from their civil liberties.

Save The Future

Human trafficking, also called trafficking in persons, has no place in our world. As both a grave crime and a human rights abuse, it compromises national and economic security, undermines the rule of law, and harms the well-being of individuals and communities everywhere, especially marginalized communities. It is a crime of exploitation. Trafficking profit at the expense of the victims by compelling them to perform labor or to engage in commercial sex in every region of the United States and around the world. With an estimate of 27.6 million victims worldwide at any given time, human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, exploiting them for their own profit.

When someone is speaking, the goal should be to try to understand them and if you do not understand them, you go to asking for more clarity, you go to asking more questions to try to dig deeper so that you can have a clearer understanding of how they are feeling and what they are trying to communicate.

As a child, I was sexually touched by a trusted family member. I did not realize how traumatic the experience was until I reached adulthood. This experience ruined many relationships, scarred me for life, and damaged my self-esteem. I am working with a therapist to help me restore my life. If you are a victim of child molestation, pedophilia, or rape, you should speak up and out about it.

Television Is Telling A Lie To Your Vision

Television Is Telling A Lie To Your Vision

Television became available as an experimental form in the late 1920s, and after world war ii, a preform of black-and-white TV broadcasting became popular in the United States and Britain. In 1927 an American scientist, Philo Farnsworth made the first electronic television system in the file they patent for that same year. His camera tube design was known as the image of the sector. Like Nicola Tesla, he was ahead of his time. I was just 14 years old, and he had already established the basic principles of electric television. Fans worth invention was intended by its created to educate people through cultural and sports programs, to bring more understanding to the world of the sheer beauty of our different coaches, habits, and beliefs, to settle world problems, and bring people together. According to his wife, Pem Farnsworth, Philo saw television as a marvelous teaching tool. There would be no excuse for illiteracy. Parents could learn along with their children. News and sporting events could be seen as they were happening in real-time and we would be able to see and learn about people and other countries and lands all over the world. Differences could be settled around conference tables, without going to war. Speaking of the invention of television, a former member of the CIA described it as, quote the greatest scientific and indoctrination to ever devised. " Today, people watch television for dozens of our every week. It can be said, that it has been, and continues to be, one of the most trusted means of communication and form of entertainment. But what if you discovered that the very source of information you were introduced to as a child and had learned to love, was above all, it means to control your perceptions, your views, your choices, your emotion,s and consequently, your behavior? The global mainstream media still today, is merely one of the many tools used strategically for primary people's perception, if you believe that television is a reliable source of Truth and a means of harmless entertainment, you are deluding yourself. " Never watch the television. It becomes YOU and you become IT. "

Over the following years, music quickly became Travvy’s preferred form of expression. Big influencers as such as French Montana, Kid Cudi, and Kayne West, motivated him to push forward with his music and eventually pursue it as his career. Yet his own Department of homeless services is canceling planned shelters in the face of community pushback and in Adams' first month in office, his administration put the brakes on three shelters that were on the verge of opening. But falls in a neighborhood that is predominantly African-American and Latinx and saddled with the highest rates of poverty the city examined found. And despite it, most shelters are very dangerous. Drug deals and the use of drugs go on in there, as violence, physical and mental assaults, gangs, and sexual assaults.

The Origins of Monopoly

The Origins of Monopoly

Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism. Elizabeth J. Maggie Phillips was an American game designer writer, and feminist who was the creator. She invented The Landlord's Game, the precursor to Monopoly, to illustrate the teachings of the progressive era economist Henry George. Despite it all, the origins of capitalism came from racial capitalism. The concept of racial capitalism asserts that racialized exploitation and capital accumulation are mutually reinforcing. Racial capitalism created the modern world system. During slavery, Black humans were seen as valuable for the profits that they made. As humans, they were devalued, dehumanized, and disposable. But the enslaved were the quintessential essential workers. They were essential for capital, but their lives are expandable to this day.

The Psychological Impact of Incarceration: Implications for Post-Prison Adjustment

The Psychological Impact of Incarceration: Implications for Post-Prison Adjustment

The unique set of psychological changes that many prisoners are forced to undergo to survive the prison experience. It argues that, as a result of several trends in American corrections, the personal challenges posed and psychological harms. The trends include increasingly harsh policies and conditions of confinement as well as the much-discussed de-emphasis on rehabilitation as a goal of Incarceration. As a result, the ordinary adaptive process of institutionalization or "privatization" has become extraordinarily prolonged and intense. Among other things, these recent changes in prison life mean that prisoners in general (and some prisoners in particular) face more difficult and problematic transitions as they return to the free world.

Character, what is it? And why it's important.

Character, what is it? And why it's important.

The etymology of character is quite telling. The word comes from the Greek kharakter for "engraved mark," "symbol or imprint on the soul," and "instrument for making," and can be traced further back to the words for "to engrave," "pointed stake," and "to scrape and scratch." In the 17th century, the word came associated with "the sum of qualities that defines a person. These qualities include man's intellect, thoughts, ideas, motives, intentions, temperament, judgment, behavior, imagination, perception, emotion, love, and hate. The character I built kept me safe during my encounters in the streets but that mindset can keep you trapped in a cycle of negativity if you do not take the time to change the way you are and or think. This a sad reality for many who rather stay stagnant in growth and not take a journey in pain to change for themselves and their family.

Great Poetry Reading Day

Great Poetry Reading Day

Presenting my poem, "Infliction:" Jealous of our bond

He puts you through shit

Pressure of being unhappy

To please this prik

You treat me like shit

Straining our friendship

shit isn't it

When will you quit

Pushing me away

too legit

To go through this shit

Seek your attention

I seek no attention

Ima whole vibe

Girl, did I mention

Coming at you with

Pure love and affection

no hidden agenda

Why did you mention

You guys problem

Like it's my problem

His insecurities

Are your problem

During a disagreement

you mentioned

We had problems

I didn't know we had problems

You hiding shit

That's the problem

Keep it real

trust no one

Ima fallback

Don't need problems

Over you

Stay focus on my goals

Lost to distractions

Minimize my interactions

Who you socialize with

Becomes you

Taking up habits

Be careful

Who you associate with

Paradigms start to shift

Our friendship

Is a curse wrapped in a gift

Im Blessed

To empower and uplift

Do it for the kids

I'm tired of going through shit

With people I think mean shit

Then they switch

Over some bullshit

Nothing new

I'm used to

Something I knew, shit

Better now than later

When things get sweeter

Than a now or later

Who is Uncle Tom

Who is Uncle Tom

This segment speaks on the fact that it is not the original Uncle Tom character portrayed in the book that upsets most people but the realization that popular media has wrongfully falsified what it means to be an Uncle Tom. As the video states... "staged depictions" have misled people to believe that an Uncle Tom would "sell out any black man to a white employer or slaveowners" for his benefits when this is not the case. This is a very important lesson because it teaches us that "We" as a people must always be careful as to where we get our information from because the media will and has also been known to wrongfully distort the truth to fit their insidious agendas. That's why there is so much confusion not only amongst the black communities but the world as a whole because a large portion of people relies on "mass media" for information and such.

John Zgaljic joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968 and was a decorated Marine veteran who toured two tours of Vietnam. Court marshaled twice, was forced into a bad conduct discharge. Traumatized by the effects of war, and what he saw in Vietnam, John began abusing alcohol to escape reality. One thing led to another; John committed a crime to survive in the streets. An incident occurred where John blacked out, standing accused of four homicides, John went to trial and lost. He was facing four cases: one murder-in-the-second-degree charge and three cases of Manslaughter-in-the-first degree. John was given by the trial judge 18 years to life in New York State prison. John's first facility was Attica Correctional in 1985. John's time in prison was good and bad throughout his thirty-five years of incarceration. John managed to obtain his bachelor's degree and helped put a few dogs from (PBB) Puppies Behind Bars through graduation during his incarceration. My name is Christopher Harley. I was a survivor of my own decisions in my younger years. During his childhood, Chris faced many choices, some good and some bad. Growing up in poverty and in a single-family home, Chris never had any positive role models guiding him in the correct direction, which pushed him into the street life for survival. During his time in the streets, Chris faced twenty-two years for his harmful actions and coping out to 10 years in prison. Redlining and Neighborhood Health during Covid.

Redlining and Neighborhood Health during Covid.

Life expectancy in my community is lacking. Public health in communities like mine is not a priority, both personally and on a structural level. People are dying of ailments that would have been addressed if redlining wasn't used, in the past, as a tool to ban certain areas from funding. Covid-19 highlighted the biased and racist laws and policies politicians kept in place. They are making it challenging to receive excellent medical attention by design if they cannot capitalize financially from poor health. We do not trust the systems in our communities, let alone in this country since they are rooted in structural racism. And we are paying for it dearly with our lives. #healthiswealth Let's do a better job at protecting ourselves, mentally and physically, so we can live a prosperous life.

The Effects of Mass Incarceration on Communties of Color

The Effects of Mass Incarceration on Communties of Color

Living poor my whole life, I've noticed biased laws and policies passed by politicians that discriminate against people of color. Placing people in the box: stigmatized and discriminating against returning citizens, labeling them felons while barring them from utilizing their civil liberties. America is a country known for being the land of the free; people are chasing the American dream. But there is an ongoing tension between reality and appearance. What appears as if things changed; the truth is, the American nightmare has caused many Americans pain and even their life. America is a nation that capitalizes on human capital. The side effects of mass incarceration have plagued families, shifting the family dynamics. It is creating a vicious cycle that never ends.

Kings Killing Kings! The new KKK.

Living in a community ravished with drugs, violence, and poverty, I've noticed how young Black and Latinos are killing themselves over nothing. We are conditioned into hating each other. Mental Health Challenges

Mental Health Challenges

Having a mental health issue can cause you a lifetime of pain and even have you questioning yourself like, "What's wrong with me?" Leaving you stigmatized or discriminated against by a friend, family, or some person. Imagine having a mental health disorder while being incarcerated. There are no services in prison to help prisoners escape discrimination, stigma, or abuse (emotional, physical, verbal, intellectual, etc.) from prisoners and or staff. I want to raise awareness among people who may be biased toward people with mental disorders. And hopefully, we, as a society, can get on board with helping our communities and returning citizens heal together from long-term trauma. Mental struggles are nothing new under the Sun; we, as a community, need to learn how to address mental health issues with the right tools, and not by incarceration.

SMILES

SMILES

This segment is based on a poem I wrote three days ago for an open mike at Ignacio's. It talks about how people hide hurt behind a smile. Not only do they hide their brokenness with a smile people can deceive a person with a smile too. This beautiful poem takes you through the different levels of emotions I went through the day I broke down. But the beauty and essence of it are; God blesses those who are obedient, faithful, merciful, and graceful with an abundance of gifts if you put your trust in him.
