Qualifications of apostles is they were full of wisdom and Holy Spirit. You see this in chapter 2, 4 and 6. When the dispute arose about distribution of food to the widows, apostles asked them to present seven men full of wisdom and the Holy Spirit. They presented Stephen, Philip and five others. Stephen is the first to be mentioned because Luke is going to talk about him at length.

Where was he all This time? He appears like a shooting star, burns bright and disappears quickly. He was not one of those selected by Jesus himself. But no less. He was on par with apostles and Paul.

After the judgement of the Lord on Ananias and Sapphire people were afraid to join the apostles. But they held them in high esteem. Those who are genuine in their faith were being added to the church. The people swing to the other extreme and bring the sick and laid them on the street so that Peter's shadow might fall on them and heal them! The scripture affirms that "all were healed". We continue to learn about Gamaliel being a pharisee yet was respected by the Saducees who were his rivals. Yet he did not see Jesus in good light. He tried to compare with two criminals. He did not share the respect Nicodemus had for Jesus or of Joseph of Arimathea. His scholarship is not unbiased and truth is not the basis of his life. Apostles said, "we have to obey God rather than men". Gamaliel is buried and his memory is also buried and forgotten.

Joseph Barnabas sold his property and brought the money and put it at the feet of Apostle Peter. Ananias and Sapphira

wanted to do the same to get same recognition but wanted to keep back some of the proceeds. Peter confronted Ananias with the truth. When Ananias was exposed, he had a heart attack and fell down dead. Ooops!

v23 Peter and John went back to their own people. That was the group not consisting of 3000 or 5000 people. That is the core group of praying people. That is the centre of power. We might think of White House as a place of power or some capital city of a country. But, that band of praying people for the centre of power. Their unselfish prayer moved the hand of God and the place where they prayed shook, people were filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the word of God boldly. What an immediate answer to prayer.

If we read 2 Samuel 23, we see a list of mighty men who were in David's service. How did they become mighty men? When they came to him they were destitutes, in debt and threatened by king Saul. Because of their association with David, they were gradually changed into mighty men. That is what happened to the apostles. They were recognised as men who were with Jesus. That accounted for their smartness, knowledge of scriptures, boldness in facing the Sanhedrin etc.

How did Peter and John heal the crippled man? He said, why are you astonished? As though we have made this man whole by our power or godliness. Acts 2:43 many miracles were done through the hands of the apostles. So, in Acts 3, Luke gives us such an event which was significant and had more impact and consequences. He was born crippled and his family would set him down at the stairway to the temple called 'Beautiful'. Most of the religious leaders were Sadducees who did not believe in resurrection, angels etc. So they wanted to trap Jesus and posed a hypothetical question. In these verses, Peter's explanation of the phenomena of tongues continues. He builds his case by proving that Jesus rose again from the dead. When the people saw the disciples speaking in tongues they concluded they were drunk with sweet wine. Peter perceived what is being said and decided to give a defence about the reality. It was a festival season, people were fasting, praying to celebrate the barley harvest. They would drink mostly with dinner. It was 9am too early to be drunk. Every word Luke uses in his first chapter is very precious. Jesus being taken up into heaven is mentioned three times in the first chapter (vs 2,9,11). It gives an insight into ending of Jesus life on the earth and beginning of his life in Heaven, it gives a closure to the matter unlike Elijah after being caught up into heaven by a chariot of fire, the men of the school of prophets wanted to search for his body. The disciples are witnesses of his ascension. This is crucial for their faith and joy. They worshipped Jesus who was not present in a physical form to them and were full of joy.

The word "die" occurs about 300 times in the Bible (NIV). v1 ends saying Ephraim 'died'! How did he die? Because of Baal worship. When anyone moves away from worshipping the true and only God death comes, first spiritual and physical death later.

Jacob or Israel says, I am going to die, but do not bury me here instead take my body to the land of Canaan. Hope of Canaan takes away the fear of death. Likewise, Joseph says, I am going to die. If you read Hosea 10 in KJV, you will not find the Lord's name mentioned much. Instead you will find the personal pronouns "He" and "I" but you need to distinguish when it refers to the Lord and when it refers to others in the text. So, what do we infer from it? This chapter deals mainly with Israel's sin.

Israel says "we don't have a king because we did not revere the Lord". When they reject the King, they are rejecting God. They did reject the King of kings and Lord of Lord's Jesus Christ. When he was carrying the cross, he looked at some women who were crying: "don't weep for me, weep for yourselves and your children". The days are coming when "they will say to the mountains, "Cover us!" and to the hills, "Fall on us!"" It is found again in Rev 6:16. This is an event which is yet to happen!

Ephraim is used 6 times and Israel is used 3 times in this chapter. Same way the name of God, the Lord is used 5 times and God is used 4 times. A simple addition gives us the number 9 for each of Ephraim and the Lord. That is the first theme "the relationship between the Lord and Israel"!

Three times the words " the house of the Lord " is used in vs 4,6,15. When they reject the Lord, they also reject his prophets. Prophets are Prophets are rejected, ill-treated, insulted, sometimes killed as well. He uses pictures to describe the condition of Israel: grapes in desert, first ripe figs, glory flying away like a bird and blight afflicting a crop etc.

Prophet Hosea continues his brilliant barrage of words and pictures to lift up the sins of Israel. Sin is forming a barrier for God to heal them. They are like burning oven with adultery, idolatry, etc. His use of powerful similes and metaphors makes it very colourful. v8 Ephraim is a flat cake not turned over, v11 Ephraim is like a dove, easily deceived and senseless, I will throw a net and catch them as a prepared hunter, lastly in v16 he says they are like a faulty bow. The Lord is bringing a charge against the Israelites: no faithfulness,

Hosea is mentioned as a minor prophet because of the length of his prophecy. His ministry stretched for over 60 years like that of Isaiah, Amos and Micah. His life is a message. He was asked by the Lord to marry a prostitute. Some think it happened only in his mind meaning in his visions but not in life. But many commentators feel that he in deed married Gomor (meaning perfect ) who probably was from such a background. However, 1:3 says she bore him a son. He was the father of Jezreel. Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah three times: 605 BC, 597 BC and 587 BC. He had taken captives from his invasion in 605 and Daniel and his friends were part of it. He wanted to recruit people from among the captives to serve in his kingdom.

Their geographical location changed. Their names were changed. Probably their dressing is changed. Re-education began. Culture was being remodelled. Their food and drink was to change. Daniel was wise. He chose his battle. He did not mind all those changes. When it came to food and drink that defiles them, he took a stand. We need Daniel's wisdom to take a stand when matters of holiness, fearing and worshipping the Lord and obedience to Him were being challenged, We should take a stand!

There are two Hebrew words to express the meaning of "Blessing": Asher or Ashreka and Barak. In verse 1 and 2 we see the Hebrew words used are Asher and Ashreka. These are used for men and by men. When someone is blessed he becomes an object of envy. When God blesses man, the word used is Barak as in v4. also, the word Barak is used as an expression of praise to the Lord! King David has gone through emotional hurts several times in his life. One of those is talked about in 1Sam25. He and his men had kept watch over the large herds and flocks of Nabal. When it was time for shearing, David sent his men to ask for a return of favour while Nabal was rejoicing over his multiplied blessing. Nabal insulted David's men. Balaam was angry with his donkey for not walking straight until his eyes were opened to see the angel of God standing with a drawn sword. Afterward Balaam would be very grateful to the donkey for not going forward. Many times our perspective changes out emotions even though situation is the same. In this scripture passage we see three kinds of people. Natural man, Spiritual man and Spiritual man not growing but remaining a child still feeding on milk not solid food.I have demonstrated this with three plastic water bottles. one with lid closed represents natural man, without salvation. Even though the rain of God's mercy, grace, love is falling all around nothing gets inside since the lid is on. The second, the lid is open, some water may get in but doesn't fill the bottle quickly as the opening is narrow. The third is a bottle that you take a knife and chop of the top part, making the mouth very wide. This gets filled quickly.

Saul and David were anointed by Prophet Samuel! But we see two different outcomes. One lasted just one life time and the other lasted into Eternity. On the surface of it, it is not clear. Saul reigned for 42 years and David only 40 years. Saul was self centred and David God centred. Saul had very dramatic experiences with the Holy Spirit. David not so dramatic but he moved in revelation, prophesied about Jesus Christ!

After the Pentecost as the disciples Peter and John were walking to the temple for prayer, they saw a man crippled from birth sitting at the Beautiful Gate to receive alms. One of them could have told the other, look straight and don't make an eye contact as there is that guy sitting there. When he expected to receive alms from them, Peter said those oft repeated golden words, "silver or gold have I none, but such as I have I give thee, In the Name of Jesus Christ rise up and walk"! What if they said our Lord is not here anymore. What can we do now? Some of us have received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. But we are stuck at the gate called Beautiful, ironically.
