11.13 - The Mother's Day Round Table with Actresses Linara Washington, Christine Lin, and Wendy Wynne
Happy Mother's Day! To the mothers out there, to those who have chosen not to have children, for those who can't, for those who have lost a mother, for those who may not be close with their mother, for those whose mother is their best friend.
Being in this business is hard enough without having to worry about dependents, and families, and schedules, and pregnancy. For all the moms out there that are also actors, they have to juggle a million and one things all at once. Today I wanted to speak with some women who have made the choice to have children, and what that has looked like for them in their day-to-day life and in their career.
We are joined by Christine Lin, a stage and screen actress born in Indiana with a biomedical and electrical engineering degree from Duke. She originated the role of Miss Zhao in "Chinglish" on Broadway. She is known for Surfside Girls, The Blacklist, and Abominable. Then we have the wonderful Linara Washington, who graduated from the University of Chicago, and who moved to Los Angeles after booking the role of Keisha in Barbershop 2. Since moving here, she has been on several of your favorite shows; Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Madame Secretary, and more. She is the co-owner of Picture Palace Films and has produced two feature films. Last but not least, we have Wendy Wynne who you can see on Who is Killing the Cheerleaders and Jesus Revolution. Wendy is a wife, mother, actor, advocate, hope dealer, cheeleader/sister/friend on a mission to remind you of your greatness!

11.11 - My Relationship to My Own Body as an Actress
TW: Body Dysmorphia + Disordered Eating
My relationship to my body has been a lifelong uphill battle. There are so many moments in my life where I have just felt absolutely disconnected to what my body really looks like. After years and years and years of eating disorders and body dysmorphia, I have finally gotten to a place where I am happy with where I am. I fuel my body, I take care of it, and I have learned how to engage in the pursuit of acting without the toxic Hollywood ideal of becoming ever-thinner. This episode was immensely personal and vulnerable for me to share, especially as I look back on an article that dove into what 2017 Sam believed to be a healthy relationship with food. Let me know if this helped you in some way, and how you have learned to take care of yourselves and your body as an actor in this business.

Back in December 2022, I was asked to join The Financial Diet YouTube channel to talk about my experience as a working actor in Los Angeles. 11.7 - Blog from 2018 Fact Check: "Little Acting Admin Tasks We Forget About"
Today I wanted to share a little bit of my thoughts on the recent Casting Director controversy, as well as fact check my old blog post from 2018. Titled, "Little Acting Admin Tasks We Forget About", this is a blog I wrote about actor homework given to me at the time by my then-coach Brian Patacca. It was all based around making sure I had everything up-to-date and accurate on my end, to make it easier for casting and reps to find me. But a lot has changed in these 5 years, and the things we have to do now to keep up may not be the same as they were. So join me as I fact check myself and see what I got right and what I disagree with now.

11.6 - Tips & Advice For Coming Off A Not-So-Great Week Of Being An Actor
I just had a week that was, objectively, very good. I was productive, got to go to an in-person callback audition for an indie film, and was put on avail for a national commercial. All in all, major wins, right? In hindsight, I can say yes. But in the moment, I was absolutely devastated. It was hard for me to see what I had accomplished because I had so many negative emotions and thoughts swirling around in my mind. And that is so common in the actor world, where we ricochet back and forth alongside the peaks and valleys of this career. So I walk you through what I did to bring me back to myself again after losing my way. If you've gone through something similar, let me know what you do in moments like these!

10.12 - What it means to set yourself up for success in a New Year
This was going to be a podcast episode just for the Patreon, but I thought that this topic was something that we could all use to set up our 2023. 10.11 - Tips on Resting & Relaxing in Actor Hustle Culture
I wanted to make a podcast and YouTube video all about what actors *actually* do over the holidays. I know we always want to be doing something for our careers and using every minute of our time towards the next thing, but rest is a crucial part of being a creative person. But most of the productions around Los Angeles and the country shut down for these last few weeks as casting directors, agents, managers, directors, writers, crew, and all of the other excellent people who work on the shows and films we love go home to spend time with their families. So rather than feeling guilty about this past year, allow yourself time to breathe. If you don't know where to even start, I've got you covered.

Bonus: Casting & Castability with CD Amanda Doyle
Straight from IG Live (forgive the audio quality) I am joined by CD Amanda Doyle. Her love of actors and the creative process got her in on the ground floor of Castability, which we really get into in this episode. Here's the deal..
As actors, we are never told how we did in an audition, why we didn't get a part, or how close we got. It sometimes feels impossible to grow.
Castability was created to empower actors with real data. It works as an audition simulator. Actors submit self-tapes, and receive private rankings from vetted Casting Directors, with their top-ranking work showcased to the industry on our Castability List...hi new workshop game?!
OBA is a proud partner of Castability. Check if out here!
Bonus: Q&A with Casting Director turned Coach Sam Stiglitz of Audition Pro LA
If you love the honesty OBA is built around, you're gonna love the way Sam Stiglitz approaches the world. This high-level CD-turned acting coach is a myth buster on the internet and you know we love to see it!
I asked Sam to join me for an IG Live last month and it was such good content I had to make it into a podcast! We dive into:
- What are the things she learned about the business as a CD that helped her work better with actors?
- What are the biggest myths being spread right now in the industry
- How she feels about submission reports and agent communication
- Standing out in self-tapes
- Looking for casting opportunities in smaller markets
- And how she is navigating the business of being an online presence with her (totally full!) line-up of working actors
Check out Sam's website here and make sure you follow her on IG and Tiktok too!

9.8- Sending Better Emails
Let's be honest, none of us got into this business to write emails. As creatives, all we want is to create projects that we're passionate about. But, the keyword here is that this is a *business* and part of that business is sending emails. While people have different opinions about how to improve an email, I'm giving you 5 tips in this episode that I personally believe will make all the difference. With One Broke Actress alone I get so many emails asking for advice or to collaborate that I can tell you from experience how easy it is to pick out which ones are professional and which are copy/paste spam. So — before sending your next email to an agent, manager, or casting director — be sure to listen to my tried-and-true tips on how not to get lost in someone's inbox!

9.1- What I Did Well & Poorly in 2021
I am coming at you with a Solo Sam episode to kick off the newest season of the podcast. A big thank you to all of my longtime listeners, and a huge welcome to everyone who is new here. I wanted to start off the season by going over everything I did well & poorly in 2021 in my acting career (Something I borrowed from my good friend Ashli Pollard's The Daily Hype Podcast). Remember to take what serves you, leave what doesn't, and please don't judge the rest!

- Meeting and communicating with Old/New Casting Directors
- Taking time to watch the content I didn't book but auditioned for
- Slowing down

- Tracking my auditions + communicating with my reps
- Staying in my proverbial lane
- Increasing my acting community
- Taking liberties in auditions and not taking it so personally

8.10 - Dealing with Jealousy and Comparison
I had a totally different plan for today's episode but a last-minute change has me thinking we need to tackle this topic: actor comparison and jealousy. I highly doubt this is the last time I talk about this, but with a lot of years (and therapy + self-help books) I have developed a way I deal with these things when they come up, I hope it's helpful for you too!
