11.13 - The Mother's Day Round Table with Actresses Linara Washington, Christine Lin, and Wendy Wynne

11.13 - The Mother's Day Round Table with Actresses Linara Washington, Christine Lin, and Wendy Wynne

Happy Mother's Day! To the mothers out there, to those who have chosen not to have children, for those who can't, for those who have lost a mother, for those who may not be close with their mother, for those whose mother is their best friend.

Being in this business is hard enough without having to worry about dependents, and families, and schedules, and pregnancy. For all the moms out there that are also actors, they have to juggle a million and one things all at once. Today I wanted to speak with some women who have made the choice to have children, and what that has looked like for them in their day-to-day life and in their career.

We are joined by Christine Lin, a stage and screen actress born in Indiana with a biomedical and electrical engineering degree from Duke. She originated the role of Miss Zhao in "Chinglish" on Broadway. She is known for Surfside Girls, The Blacklist, and Abominable. Then we have the wonderful Linara Washington, who graduated from the University of Chicago, and who moved to Los Angeles after booking the role of Keisha in Barbershop 2. Since moving here, she has been on several of your favorite shows; Grey’s Anatomy, NCIS, Madame Secretary, and more. She is the co-owner of Picture Palace Films and has produced two feature films. Last but not least, we have Wendy Wynne who you can see on Who is Killing the Cheerleaders and Jesus Revolution. Wendy is a wife, mother, actor, advocate, hope dealer, cheeleader/sister/friend on a mission to remind you of your greatness!

11.11 - My Relationship to My Own Body as an Actress

TW: Body Dysmorphia + Disordered Eating

My relationship to my body has been a lifelong uphill battle. There are so many moments in my life where I have just felt absolutely disconnected to what my body really looks like. After years and years and years of eating disorders and body dysmorphia, I have finally gotten to a place where I am happy with where I am. I fuel my body, I take care of it, and I have learned how to engage in the pursuit of acting without the toxic Hollywood ideal of becoming ever-thinner. This episode was immensely personal and vulnerable for me to share, especially as I look back on an article that dove into what 2017 Sam believed to be a healthy relationship with food. Let me know if this helped you in some way, and how you have learned to take care of yourselves and your body as an actor in this business.

Back in December 2022, I was asked to join The Financial Diet YouTube channel to talk about my experience as a working actor in Los Angeles. We sat down and got honest about it all: rejection in the industry, nepo babies, and the financial realities of the Hollywood dream. Today's ⏮️REWIND⏮️ is just a small snippet of the whole collaboration, so be sure to check out the full video with The Financial Diet to hear all Chelsea Fagan and I had to say!

11.7 - Blog from 2018 Fact Check: "Little Acting Admin Tasks We Forget About"

Today I wanted to share a little bit of my thoughts on the recent Casting Director controversy, as well as fact check my old blog post from 2018. Titled, "Little Acting Admin Tasks We Forget About", this is a blog I wrote about actor homework given to me at the time by my then-coach Brian Patacca. It was all based around making sure I had everything up-to-date and accurate on my end, to make it easier for casting and reps to find me. But a lot has changed in these 5 years, and the things we have to do now to keep up may not be the same as they were. So join me as I fact check myself and see what I got right and what I disagree with now.

Speaking of agents, make sure to RSVP to our Master Class with Brian Patacca right here!

9.4- Why & How I Started A Full Company That Isn't "Acting" Related + How It's Fueling My Career with Ashli Pollard

Ashli Pollard, my best-friend-turned-business-partner, comes to us from The Unfiltered Entrepreneur & The Daily Hype podcasts. We each have our own businesses that we are running, hoping to empower working actors and women alike to achieve the life that they always dreamed of. After getting overwhelmed by all that Ashli had going on, she came to me for help in producing her podcasts. One thing led to another and, in June 2021, we decided to create Fast Forward Productions. Launching this month, FFP is where the women are speaking. We help produce podcasts for anyone who needs them, because we both know the value that podcasts can have as entrepreneurs. Listen in as we discuss all about podcasts, what it's like to have a career as well as multiple businesses, and how we factor our friendship into our professional relationship.

9.3- Productivity Tips

9.3- Productivity Tips

*Patreon Study Buddies- Find out more here!* As actors, our schedules are pretty much out of our hands. Whether it's a last-minute booking, a change to the production schedule, or a flood of self-tape audition requests, we don't really have the luxury of having a consistent routine. We have to remain flexible all the time while trying to figure out how to be productive and it is hard. To help myself out over the years, I've come up with ways to hack my productivity and stay on track. Even though my routines do change constantly, I'm excited to share with you some of what works for me right now! — The reason why "new" isn't always the answer — Why I love moving while completing a task — My "pioneer woman" technique — The importance of Plug & Play Routines — How long to try a routine before changing things up Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Working Actor Workshop Skinny Confidential Website + Podcast IG Post to share your productivity hacks or thoughts on mine! -------- Want more? 9.2- Director, Stunt Pro, VO Actor America Young

9.2- Director, Stunt Pro, VO Actor America Young

America Young is a director, voice performer, stunt coordinator, producer, and storyteller extraordinaire. A Sante Fe native, you may know her from directing episodes on Legacies, Roswell New Mexico, and Blindspot, or as the iconic voice of Barbie. She has worked with various studios including Warner Bros, Netflix, Lifetime and Cannal Plus. She was also awarded the 2020 Humanitarian award by UCSD for elevating women in the film industry both throughout her career and with her nonprofit, The Chimaera Project.

In this episode, I sit down with America to talk about her career, what it's like to wear so many different hats in the industry, how she prepares to direct a TV episode, what advice she has for actors, how she balances everything while raising her four-year-old daughter, and more!

— How being a "jack of all trades and master of none" never stopped her from pursuing multiple interests

— The rollercoaster ride that is this industry + how to survive it

— The importance of giving kindness + respect to everyone you meet

— The "Muffin Basket List"

— Her current team + tips for actors on representation

— Why directing an episode on an already-established show is akin to cooking dinner at someone else's house on Thanksgiving

— Dummy sides, why they're given out, and why you should say "yes" to every audition

— Consistent communication with your industry contacts without demanding anything from them

— How your job as an actor is not to book, but to simply do the best version of the scene that you can do

— Dealing with the gentle (but not-always-gentle) level of chaos that bubbles under the surface when you work in entertainment

9.1- What I Did Well & Poorly in 2021

9.1- What I Did Well & Poorly in 2021

I am coming at you with a Solo Sam episode to kick off the newest season of the podcast. A big thank you to all of my longtime listeners, and a huge welcome to everyone who is new here. I wanted to start off the season by going over everything I did well & poorly in 2021 in my acting career (Something I borrowed from my good friend Ashli Pollard's The Daily Hype Podcast). Remember to take what serves you, leave what doesn't, and please don't judge the rest!

— Four Things I Did Poorly:

  1. Meeting and communicating with Old/New Casting Directors
  2. Taking time to watch the content I didn't book but auditioned for
  3. Slowing down
  4. Getting caught up in image overacting in auditions

— Six Things I Did Well:

  1. Tracking my auditions + communicating with my reps
  2. Staying in my proverbial lane
  3. Increasing my acting community
  4. Taking liberties in auditions and not taking it so personally
  5. Saying "no, thank you" to extra classes
  6. Staying present

If you want to do your own "well & poorly" for 2021, be sure to tag @onebrokeactress on Instagram so I can see it!
