Episode 113: Spiritual Power: Cessationism vs Continuationism
When Christians talk about spritiual power, they sometimes put terminology to what they believe. Those words are cessationism (believing the gifts have ceased after the time of the apostles), and continuationism (believing the gifts continue after the time of the apostles). This conversation with our good friend, Dr. Austin Maxheimer (who isn't a cessationist), isn't meant to tell you what to believe, but to give you some context and information on the conversation. Continue praying for the power of God as you explore faith.

Episode 112: Spiritual Power | Tongues
During this multi-episode series on spiritual power, we are diving into the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This episode we brought on a panel of people who have experienced the gift of tongues. For some of us (Sarah included), this gift is a bit odd, and people discount it as something that still happens today. The goal of this episode is to create a genuine conversation and ask some questions to help us all understand better this gift of the Spirit so that we can continue to celebrate the ways God has gifted us to edify His Church. Episode 106: Connecting To Other People
Tell us a little about you. Your current role at One Life and your experience and education in counseling. I have been The Groups Director at our East campus for the past 2 years. I have a Masters in Christian Counseling from Gordon-Conwell. I have several years experience in private practice counseling in WV, SC, PA, and a little bit here at OL. I also served as a Groups Director at a church in SC. So you focus and think about groups and connections here at One Life, first off why is that something that is important to you and why should it be important to other people? It’s important to me because I see the value and benefit that comes to those who are in connection with others. It improves our mental health and helps us realize that we’re not alone in a lot of the things we all struggle with. Without connection, things like anxiety, depression and addiction only increase. How have you seen your life change through a relationship / friendship / connection? I have been in several Groups since High School. In each group, I have seen the Group Members support each other through all of life’s circumstances- addiction, marital infidelity, infertility, new marriages, coronavirus, sickness, marital conflict, job loss, moving, singleness. The group ends up serving in my opinion as an incubator to help people walk through those circumstances and point them to the God who can give them peace in their circumstances. I’ve seen group members assist with a move, or offer support during a trying time of their marriage. God never promised us life would be without its hardships, but what a Group does is help give support and love when it’s most needed. I met my husband through the group I was in when I was single. When we lived in Philly, we were in a group who happened to all be transplants. So our group became like a little family for each other. In the current Group I’m in, we support each other through the ups and downs of our marriage. Are there right ways to connect with other people and wrong ways? Two types of people: Introverts and Extroverts Right ways: For the shy person - Trying out a group or Team to see if it’s a good fit for you. It may not be a good fit for you and that’s OK. Keep trying until you find one where you feel comfortable. Opening up at your own pace as you trust people. For the extrovert: Respecting other people’s physical and emotional boundaries and being cautious of over-sharing. Wrong ways - not respecting someone’s physical or emotional boundaries. If you see a person trying to avoid you, you probably need to back off. For the Introvert - if you never share anything, it makes it very difficult for people to get to know you. So maybe find someone in the group who you trust and you feel comfortable sharing with, then eventually you may feel comfortable sharing with the whole group. How can being in community with other people help us restore? Being in community with others give us built in accountability. By sharing our lives with others, we have put ourselves out there and said in a sense, “I want you to ask me the hard questions.” “When I tell you I’m struggling in my marriage or I don’t know what to do with my teenage kids” I want you to ask me the hard stuff. I want you to say “how can I help?” I want you to say “What are you doing to improve your relationships?” “What are you doing to build bridges with your kids?” Encourage them in the good stuff. Provide support and resources in the hard stuff. Also, in all aspects of recovery, it’s known that community helps people recover from their addictions and stay sober. We all have addictions - whether that’s to food, Netflix, shopping, alcohol, drugs, pornography, unhelathy people. We just have to care enough to ask people how they’re really doing and steer them towards healthier outlets. Doing the hard work of Restoring means taking a look at what you are struggling with. It may be a...

Episode 105: Spiritual Practices
In this episode, we talk to Mark Weaver about some of his experiences and things he's continuing to learn in healing, spiritual practices, and restoration. We always try and start out with a conversation getting to know your better. So I have 2 questions for you for that, Mark. Why was One Life something you wanted to be a part of launching? When I'm in Henderson, where is a MUST place to go to eat and what should I order? During our Restore series, we got to learn from you on a Sunday and we talked about our identity being defined completely differently after Jesus. That the work is complete, the healing is complete. Why is identity such a tough thing for us to process and really understand? What are some of your own spiritual practices? Are all spiritual practices "restorative"? Some of the things you said in our conversation Recently we had a conversation where you told me that when bad things happen around you, that you just don't have an initial reaction. Can you tell me about that? Is that a good thing or a bad thing, because I think so many of us want to be that way, but we just can't. Any specific resources you would recommend? Books? Podcasts? Teachings?

Episode 103: Grief | Part 1
In part 1 of this episode, we talk to Carolyn Edwards about grief. What it is. What it isn't. When you have it, and how you can cope personally, but also how to help someone you care about while they are grieving (spoiler: just listen). Carolyn also provided some resources which you can read through here: https://bit.ly/30qt5tZ We might know the stages of grief, have you seen that play out in real-time? What is something that maybe doesn't show up in the books but would benefit everyone to know about grief? What does grief do to people physically and mentally? Inside the church, we say a lot of phrases to people who may be grieving -- are any of those actually helpful? Which are just cliche and which are helpful in healing? Often I hear people say when going to a funeral or seeing a friend who may be grieving a loss of a loved one "I didn't know what to say". What can/should we say? And then what can I CONTINUE to say beyond that one encounter?

Episode 102: How Do I Start To Restore?
In this episode, we talk to Paul Linge. Paul is a counselor and a pastor. We talk about some really great topics in this episode and ones that we think will help anyone process some ways to begin a season of restoration. Things from lamenting, sabbath, journaling, listening to your body, and forgiveness - Paul has some practical ways to help you. QUESTIONS WE ASKED PAUL When we think about restorative practices for ourselves, what are some things that come to mind? We are talking about lamenting in our service the Sunday previous. What does this practice do for us? For our minds, and our bodies? What are some things that you are seeing in people after the year 2020 and continuing into 2021 of isolation, and just overall change? What are some practical ways to help each other reconnect and restore ourselves towards renewed health? As you've interacted with people through the years what are common misconceptions or even mistakes you see people make when it comes to soul care? Have you discovered anything in the course of your training and counseling you wish everyone knew about better soul care? How does all of this relate to our spiritual life? Why is it important - shouldn’t we just “pray more?”

In this episode, Bret and Sarah have a conversation about how even in the midst of difficulty we can still see beauty. Our staff recently went through a quarantine due to Covid-19, and that added some interesting things to navigate. 2 of the One Life campuses were robbed in the same evening. We also discuss loss and grief, as we remember our friend, Donna Nunn. Donna was highly involved in One Life Church and is the mother of the Campus Pastor of our Henderson Campus. Donna passed suddenly just this week prior, and we remember her with some stories from her family, as well as some of our own. We're thankful for him. One Life Church began the mission of - Helping people far from God, trust and follow Jesus on 10/10/10. So for the past 10 years, we have learned some things that worked well, and some things that we wished we would have differently. Episode 91: Following God's Direction
Matt Breivogel has been on staff at One Life Church as the Creative Arts Director and part of our teaching team for over 8 years. Almost every design and creative element that One Life has created during that time, Matt has created or been a part of. Matt is also one of the most pastoral people we have on our staff. He and his family care deeply about the mission and vision of the local Church, and One Life Church's mission of helping people far from God, trust, and follow Jesus. Matt's personality and overall positive attitude have made working with him a true joy and just a fun place to be. This episode is bittersweet in a sense. Matt is following direction from God and moving to a new full-time position with a local business that he has been working freelance for over that past few years. He and his wife, Amanda, sat down with us and shared their personal journey through this decision, and also talk about how they will still be a part of One Life Church, maybe more than ever. For you as the listener, even if you don't know Matt and Amanda, we believe their story will walk you through a journey of prayer and listening to God as He leads us to where He calls us. We at One Life already miss having Matt's infectious personality and wisdom in our weekly meetings and conversations, but we are thankful that he is still part of One Life Church, and helping lead in new ways, and we are also excited to see his joy of the gospel and joy of people being used in a new everyday environment. tl:dr | Matt took a new job. There's no story behind the story. He's following God's leading. We miss him on our staff, but are glad he's not really going anywhere.

Episode 8: Special Kick Start Question Episode
In this episode, we share some of the celebrations from our previous Baptism Celebration at all of our campuses. We then shift to a special episode of exploring some questions. At One Life we offer a 2-week grouping experience called Kick Start. In Kick Start, people learn the mission, vision, and values of One Life Church and find ways to connect to them. During this group, there is a space where people are able to write down questions they may have in regards to One Life or in regards to faith, and we say we will answer those either on our Explorers Blog on our website or in this case on the Podcast. The questions are: "Why is One Life's mission 'Helping people far from God to trust and follow Jesus,' instead of 'Helping people who feel far from God to trust and follow Jesus?' I've always wondered because... are we ever far from God?" "How do you stay connected? [How do you] grow as a believer?" "Why is the baptism of the Holy Spirit not mentioned in a lot of churches? What about the gifts of the Spirit? What do you guys believe about speaking in tongues, healing, prophecy, and works of God?" "Maintaining a strong faith during difficult times and finding scripture to study." "What about aliens?" (Yup, we discuss aliens in this episode.) On The Mics: Sarah Inman // Communications Director: One Life Church Bret Nicholson // Lead Pastor: One Life Church Matt Breivogel // Creative Arts Director: One Life Church & Co-Campus Pastor: One Life Church - West.
