Teacher Flight, Shortages and Strikes Could Be Coming This Year!

Welcome back to The State of Education podcast, presented by One-Room Education.

In today’s episode we’ll be discussing:

  • What “Teacher Flight” is and why it’s happening.
  • The plight of the public school teachers.
  • What Teachers' Unions are doing about it.
The Best Way to Support the Overextended Teacher
  1. Volunteer to go in one day a week. Clean the classroom or set up for the next day. It doesn't have to be during school hours, just when you have time.
  2. Send the teacher an email thanking them for their work with your student. Let them know that you see them and appreciate them if they are doing a good job.  All teachers need feedback from their students and parents, not just elementary, but secondary as well.

The Government's War on Real Education, Part 1: What is the War on Real Education and Why Haven’t I heard about it?

Welcome back to The State of Education podcast, presented by One-Room Education.

In Part 1 of the Government's War on Real Education, I discuss the changes in the mission of the primary and secondary educational institutions in the United States and the history behind the changes, as well as how these changes have affected the students' high school completion rate over the last 50+ years.

Today's episode, The Government's War on Real Education, Part 1: What is the War on Real Education and Why Haven’t I heard about it? is pretty data-heavy, so bear with me and we will make sense of it all together.

In Part 1 of this amazingly informative mini-series I present you with a wide variety of topics pertaining to how this war on real, or classical, education started.  Topics for this episode include:

  • Defining what a REAL education is.
  • Defining/describing what the war on real education is.
  • The effects this war has had on American education since the start in the late 1800s
  • Looking at how the end goal of primary and secondary education has changed.
  • Examining the profit motive of postsecondary institutions in lobbying for bills that go against the best interests of our nation’s children.
  • Break down government numbers in regards to graduation and dropout rates.
What is a "Real Education"?

I define a Real Education as a Classical Education that teaches the basics of reading, writing, math, and civics to all citizens of a given country.

In addition to the 4 basic disciplines, the students are also taught HOW to learn and HOW to think.

What is the War on Real Education?

The war on Real Education is the idea that all students are the same and must fit into a pre-approved box or there is "something wrong" with them.  This also advocates for the separation of anyone who doesn't conform to the systematic norms to be removed from the classroom and isolated from their peers.

This war is staged on several fronts, oftentimes without the general public even realizing it.  The war is meant to remove anyone who tries to ask real questions of the system and the people in charge from their peers, so they don't spoil the entire group.  The system self-preserves by labeling these students as troublemakers, learning deficient, or carrying out punishment against them.

Why haven't you heard about the war on real education?

The teacher's unions and politicians have been working very hard together to keep people silent about this issue through guilt and public shaming.

Teacher's Unions...Good or Bad for Your Children? Part 2

Teacher's Unions...Good or Bad for Your Children? Part 2

Welcome back to The State of Education podcast, presented by One-Room Education.  Today's episode is part 2 of the Teacher's Unions...Good or Bad for Your Children?

Join me as I discuss the effects of the public teacher's unions on the American classroom and beyond in this 2 part series.  In part-2 I talk about the corrupt political powerhouse that the teacher's unions have grown into over the last 100+ years and the issues they cause inside and outside of the American classrooms.

In the first part of today's episode, I delve into the problems that have arisen out of the federalization of education in America and the effect it has had on the individual classroom teachers and, by extension, their students.  Then I present the correlation between the establishment of the federal Department of Education and the expansion of influence and power of the public teacher's unions.

After we have thoroughly discussed the above topics, I move on to how the teacher's unions, in cooperation with politicians, are working to enable and embolden teachers who want to use the classrooms to forge a new generation of political activists who align with their own beliefs and values, instead of teaching the students how to be independent thinkers and individuals who can discern what their own opinions on worldly matters are instead of relying on someone else to tell them what to think.

Teacher's Unions...Good or Bad for Your Children? Part 1

Teacher's Unions...Good or Bad for Your Children? Part 1

Welcome back to The State of Education podcast, presented by One-Room Education.  Join me today as I discuss the creation and growth of the public teachers union and how they evolved into the hyper-politicized behemoths we know today.

In today's discussion, we'll be covering topics including:

  • Why the public teacher's unions were originally created.
  • Who created the unions.
  • Similarities the public teacher's unions have with other private-sector unions.
  • Why this really does affect every aspect of education from pre-k through doctoral candidacy.

In this, the first of a 2 part series, I give you the background of the formation of the public teacher's unions and how they were founded with good intentions.  I present the similarities and differences between public and private sector unions and why it matters to everyone who holds an interest in the United States education system; which is literally every citizen and resident of the US.

The Factory Model of Education: What is it and is it Still Viable in Today's Ever Evolving World?

The Factory Model of Education: What is it and is it Still Viable in Today's Ever Evolving World?

Welcome back to The State of Education, presented by One-Room Education.  Join me as I take a moderately deep dive into the subjects taught in modern schools and the reasoning behind them, as well as some practical reforms to help ensure a more prosperous future for our children.

Today we're going to be discussing:

  • How the modern American education system was established and by whom.
  • The evolution of the modern education system in America and why it is the way it is today.
  • Why you should care/need to know this stuff.

Today I will attempt to answer those age-old questions every student has asked at least once in class, "why am I here?" and "why do I have to learn this?  I'm never going to use it in my real life!"  Well, good news!  It's not just you and it really doesn't make sense for you from an overall economic standpoint either.

Don't worry, I'm not going to leave you hanging with a bunch of bad news and cynicism.  I'm going to offer some of my thoughts on ways that we can better equip the youngest among us to not just succeed, but thrive in an ever-evolving economic environment.  The solutions I present go far beyond the classroom and employment; they help to equip students with the skills they need to succeed in all aspects of their lives, to help preserve and grow freedom and prosperity for all future generations.

A Brief History of Education in America

A Brief History of Education in America

Welcome to The State of Education in America, presented by One-Room Education.

Thank you so much for joining me today for the inaugural episode of The State of Education, presented by One-Room Education!  My name is Katie and I'll be your host.  In today's episode, I'll be discussing a Brief History of Education in America.  We're going to be cover topics including:

  1. The evolution of the education system in America starting in the late colonial period right through the modern-day.
  2. The historical restrictions on who had access to education in America and why.
  3. The roles of men and women in education throughout American history
  4. The role of the student in the American education system and how that has changed over time.

My intention with this episode is to give you a background of why the modern education system is the way it is and what my views are as to how it needs to and can be reformed.

In the first part of this episode, I start by covering what the education systems looked like in the Late Colonial period for the American colonies and how access to education depended largely on your geographic location.  I also discuss how your family's station in society, as well as your gender and race, helped to determine your educational opportunities.

Moving on to the Early American period, I discuss what the role of women was in the education of the newly founded nation, and how the men who founded that nation allowed opportunities for women to finally receive a formal education.  It might not be what you think.

I then move on to the roles the students themselves were expected to play in their own education during this time period and use this topic to transition into the formation of the modern education system.  I explain how the modern education system is structured and why, as well as touching on several problems within this system.  Most of these problems are widely known and acknowledged by educators, but are rarely discussed outside of closed doors with the public.

Finally, I offer some solutions to these problems and offer some optimism for the future.
