On The Fly with Jon Gill

By Jon Gill

Everything in my working life has been 'on the fly' – I've been winging it for the last 30-odd years... but creatively..!
This podcast focusses on people who make things… which is pretty broad I know… but, in particular, I’ve been fortunate to speak to people who make things that inspire me and fire me up to be creative…

...whose process I’m curious about, who stand out from the crowd and who, I know, can teach me a lot.
Hopefully there's something in it for you too ;)

[S3 Ep3] Helicopter Stunt Pilot, Fred North "Ambulance" "Fast & Furious" "Bourne" "Star Wars"

[S3 Ep3] Helicopter Stunt Pilot, Fred North "Ambulance" "Fast & Furious" "Bourne" "Star Wars"

Welcome back to On The Fly with Jon Gill – this is a special episode with helicopter stunt pilot Fred North. Fred has so many amazing stunt credits to his name which include Bond movies, Mission Impossible, Fast and Furious and a slate of collaborations – and in the interview you here how collaborative they are – collaborations with Michael Bay including this months “Ambulance” with Jake Gyllenhaal.

There are only a handful of people world who can do what he does… and even then, it’s fair to say Fred is one of a kind and very much in demand.

If you don’t already I highly recommend connecting with him on Instagram (@fred_north) or LinkedIn to catch up on the behind the scenes clips he shares so regularly.

But it’s also very cool to hear how he got his start and how entrepreneurial he was in making his mark and so we talk about his experiences as a pilot, what turned him on to it in the first place and his regime for keeping mentally fit in a an industry where accidents are generally not due to mechanical, but human error.

The podcast is on a bit of a break for now while work is busy but I hope to capture a whole load of content at MoJoFest next month which is happening in London for the first time and is partnered with the Media Production and Technology show next month and subscribe and keep an eye out for new content very soon.

For now this is an OnTheFly season three special with stunt pilot Fred North – download the pod!

[S3 Ep 2] Filmmaker, SJ van Breda – "Symphony of Spheres"

Welcome back to On The Fly with Jon Gill – this episode sponsored by FiLMiCPro!

..which is very exciting because two years ago this month I had a film in competition at FiLMiCFest as did my guest for this episode SJ van Breda with her film Jane Digby which is stunning.

SJ is a filmmaker from Durban, South Africa who specialises in short films captured using mobile phones. In this episode we pick apart some of the techniques and themes in her most recent award winning mini-doc “Symphony of Spheres” – a poetic documentary that captures the process and the world of South African abstract sculptor Brendon Edwards.

I strongly recommend you give it a watch before you listen to this episode, it’s just 5 minutes and an amazing piece of filmmaking by any measure!

We talk about some of the challenges involved with the lockdown but mostly her filmmaking philosophy and practice of piecing together her style of people-portraits through film, sound, music and visual effects… there’s lots to learn here.

WIN!

Win yourself a FiLMic App bundle and further your filmmaking journey… all you need is a phone (or tablet).

Competition open to folks worldwide!

[S2 Ep3.1] Hal Hickle (ILM Animation Supervisor)

[S2 Ep3.1] Hal Hickle (ILM Animation Supervisor)

Hal is an Animation Supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic, the visual effects company founded in 1975 by George Lucas to accommodate that doomed space opera called Star Wars that never went anywhere…

Hal has a refreshing philosophy of the movie business – positive, pragmatic and down to earth.

This is the first of two episodes where Hal talks about his influences (Ray Harryhausen, Universal’s monster movies, Star Wars...), how he got started in animation (a brush with Cal Arts) and his humble beginnings at Pixar where they had already started on an experimental feature called "Toy Story"!

To open the podcast Hal talks about how Star Wars (the series he's now heavily associated with through "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and "The Madalorian") made an impression on him...

Hal also worked on the kinds of rare films that I will watch over and over, including:

Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean,

Marvel’s IronMan,

and Rango,

and most recently on Disney Plus’s The Mandalorian, which we’ll get into in part two!

Hal also shares a tonne of invaluable advice for anyone wanting to get into visual effects… from what should be on your showreel to sticking to your values and how you should approach the job.

You can find Hal on Twitter: @HalHickle

You’ll also find him on a tonne of DVD extras for the movies he’s worked on. I particularly recommend Disney Galleries on Disney plus which is a behind the scenes look at the making of the first two seasons on The Mandalorian.

[S2 Ep2] Eleanor Mannion – Mobile Journalist at RTE (Ireland)

[S2 Ep2] Eleanor Mannion – Mobile Journalist at RTE (Ireland)

Eleanor Mannion is a journalist, writing, shooting and editing stories and reports for the web, social media and broadcast TV & radio. Based in Dublin, Ireland Eleanor works for RTE, Ireland’s national TV and Radio broadcaster. Oh, and the film work, the editing… all done on a smartphone.

In fact, in 2016 she made the first TV broadcast documentary in Europe to be shot on a smartphone.

Eleanor is part of a small team of journalists at RTE fronted by Philip Bromwell – the team’s entire workflow is mobile oriented.

In this episode we talk about Eleanors process, how she plans and executes her shoot and tips for budding smartphone storytellers.

We talk about the process of making one film in particular which I recommend you watch first – Lockdown Diaries:

This story "Lockdown Diaries" can be found in it's landscape form here on the RTE website:

https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/0901/1162535-kildare-lockdown-diaries/

And here in it's vertical mobile form on Twitter:

https://twitter.com/eleanormmannion/status/1301053136933720064?s=20

In fact early on we get mildly technical about landscape (horizontal) Vs portrait (vertical) – if that’s not your thing just skip a few minutes to the … mark.

You can find Eleanor here:

On Twitter: @https://twitter.com/eleanormmannion

[S2 Ep 1] Nicki Fitz-Gerald Artist/Educator/iPhoneographer

Nicki Fitz-Gerald from the UK is an artist and genuine pioneer iPhone videographer/photographer. She literally wrote the book (or at least co-wrote the book) on iPhone photography: The Art of iPhone Photography.

Currently she shares her knowledge through extremely popular online courses (the Long Exposure Course mention in the chat is due later this year) as well as writing for her website and Mobiography Magazine including 3 articles (Parts 1-3) on Long Exposure covering everything from the basics, shooting car light trails, waterfalls, light painting to creative long exposure portraits and blending long exposure images together to create digital art.

You can get a free copy of the magazine here: https://www.mobiography.net

And yet Nicki somehow still found time to speak to me…

I met Nicki in 2019 at MoJofest (where she has been a guest speaker many times) on one of her evening photo walks.

[Ep 3.5] Christian Payne aka Documentally (creative social technologist)

[Ep 3.5] Christian Payne aka Documentally (creative social technologist)

Thank you for downloading the pod!

This is On The Fly, I’m Jon Gill and this is part 2 of my chat with my Episode 3 guest Christian Payne aka Documentally.

If you haven’t heard part one then please do – it doesn’t matter what order – just know that we start this episode with number 4 and 5 of his favourite things… (1, 2, and 3 being on part one) – No.4 is “documenting” and news on an amazing online storage platform called Permanent.Org

We talk about Christian's love of amateur radio, ethical working, podcasting and his weekly curated Dispatches email newsletter… a really interesting approach to sharing content, building a community and generating an income.

We also mention #AudioMo which I failed to fully explain – #AudioMo is an annual audio challenge in June (founded by @ernmander on Twitter) where you share an audio clip (anything from a few seconds to a few minutes) every day for a month. I’d taken part in the video equivalent #VloMo (each November) but it was participating in #AudioMo 2019 that convinced me that I should try a longer form podcast. And here we are!

You can find links to Christian’s Dispatches here: http://Documentally.net

And don’t forget to catch up with him on Twitter (and Instagram): @Documentally

Remember you can connect with me at MadeOnAMobile.co.uk – and if you’re interested in getting a podcast off the ground and you’d like some help by all means get in touch – quote #OnTheFlyDiscount for a cheeky 10% off podcast training through August and September.

Thanks again for downloading this pod!

Please subscribe, comment, and share and I hope you come back for episode 8 with iPhone artist Nicki Fitz-Gerald.

Quick shout out – the music you hear at the end of the pod is "Tidal Turn" by Robbie Cumming – I spoke to Robbie in Episode 6. He lives on a canal boat in the UK and has been documenting his canal journeys and life in general, living on a canal boat, for several years via his Youtube channel. So his story was picked up last year by the BBC for a TV series in the UK – series two is due out at the end of this year. So go have a listen to the chat I had with him... (once you've listened to Christian of course!)

[Ep 7] Sarah Gershman – "Stop Zoning Out On Zoom"

[Ep 7] Sarah Gershman – "Stop Zoning Out On Zoom"

Thanks so much for downloading On The Fly!

This is episode 7 with Sarah Gershman – you’ll notice she doesn’t zone out once during this pod chat!
And that's because she is an Executive Speech Coach and Presentation Skills Trainer in Washington, D.C.

You can find her online here: https://www.greenroomspeakers.com/

No matter who or where you are right now, a big chunk of the last few months has probably been spent talking to people on a screen through Zoom, Skype, FaceTime and any number of video chat apps…

And on the plus side, no doubt they’ve saved our sanity (as well as our businesses) but it’s exhausting… especially for work where it’s less about the chat and more about concentration and productivity.

And so if you relate to any of that I think you’ll enjoy this chat…

Sarah wrote an article about this for The Harvard Business Review, called “Stop Zoning out on Zoom” – and it was a real eye opener for me and I had to know more. In this conversation Sarah expands on the topics in her articles (she also wrote another about conference calls) and talks about hosts, and participants can get more out of video and conference calls and I hope you’ll find it really helpful.

Sarah also mentions this book, “Made To Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath

Song for the Episode

Predictably… this episode’s song, dedicated to Sarah is (of course), 1982’s “Zoom” by Fat Larry’s Band – what else could it be?

Not that the issues in this episode is exclusive to Zoom but you get the idea.

Here they are performing on Top of the Pops.

[Ep 6] Rob Fitzhugh (Director, Dublin Smartphone Film Festival)

[Ep 6] Rob Fitzhugh (Director, Dublin Smartphone Film Festival)

Thanks so much for downloading On The Fly!

This is episode 6 with Rob FitzhughDirector of the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival

You can find him online here:

Website: www.dublinsmartphonefilmfestival.com

Instagram/Twitter/Facebook: @dubsmartff

Rob is brilliant at getting people to market their films and market them well for film festivals. I contributed to the 2019 festival and for the first time I was thinking about promo images, social media content for the festival to use to promote my film. It was down to Rob and his experience as a festival organiser and it absolutely paid off.

Non-filmmakers out there might be wondering what’s in this episode for them? All I can say is that what I learned from Rob is (ironically) what I’ve been telling people in comms for years about their blog posts, websites, their businesses, etc. It's so easy to forget this stuff in a different context and yet it's all basically the same. It's self promotion:

  • Thinking about your audience
  • Thinking about your story and nailing that pitch
  • Being brutal with information and cutting it back to be as concise as possible

So whatever you do, if there's an element of promotion (or something that you missing and could be using these techniques) then there’s something to learn here.

And if this is helpful remember and check out the #OnTheFlyPodcast extra with SJ van Breda (from Ep4) who talks about her experiences with film festivals!

Song for the Episode

Dedicated to Rob is "Memory of a Free Festival by David Bowie"

Not that the Dublin Smartphone Film Festival is free, but as good as, it's amazing value and Rob and his team have a huge passion for what they do which is evident all year round in the work that he does in training and promoting filmmaking.

This is my favourite version the song, recorded at The BBC.

In case you didn’t know…

My name’s Jon Gill and I’m a filmmaker based in Fife, Scotland

For almost 10 years I’ve been helping people across the UK to tell their stories shooting, editing and sharing video using a mobile phone or tablet. They might be personal stories, business stories, “how to” stories, holiday stories for that matter…

  • I can make your video
  • I can make a video with you (you learn on the job), or
  • I can train you to make your video on your own

If that’s something you’ve been thinking, that would be useful to your business, organisation or team, then please get in touch –

You’ll find me at MadeOnAMobile.co.uk

Thanks again for joining #OnTheFlyPodcast

Please subscribe if you haven’t already to make sure you get the pod as soon as it’s uploaded.

What would be really helpful just now is recommendations to others, shares on social media, ratings where you download you podcast. I know it takes time but it’s so valuable to me being able to keep doing this and maybe even getting some sponsorship.

It takes about a day in total to produce one of these so in real terms it’s a cost to my business – but if it’s worthwhile (to you) I want to keep doing them.

So please support in any way you can.

See you for Episode 7!

[OnTheFly Pod-Extra] SJ van Breda – Film festivals and find the best ones...

[OnTheFly Pod-Extra] SJ van Breda – Film festivals and find the best ones...

Hey, thanks so much for downloading the Podcast, I really appreciate it.

After a few weeks off were back with some great new episodes and this one is no exception.

OnTheFly is about creative, inventive people who innovate in some way using technology.

Now this pod is an OnTheFly extra – and it features my guest from episode 4, SJ van Breada a filmmaker in South Africa who, like me, specialises in using mobile devices. Also like me she was a finalist last year in #FilmicFest and won the "Best Documentary" category. I am sooo glad I submitted to the "Made on Mobile" category because her film, Jane Digby, about a South African painter, is absolutely stunning.

Anyway, after the podcast we got talking about film festivals – it’s only 11 minutes but I thought it was worth sharing her experience because there are plenty of scams out there and Sarah gives you tips on how to avoid them and the strategy she's employed to get the most out of festivals, where she thinks the value is and so on...

Episode 6 is coming soon – make sure you subscribe to "On The Fly with Jon Gill" to make sure you get the latest episodes as soon as they're loaded. It would also be an enormous help if you would rate, like, share, comment... help me get this into the hands of other people who enjoy it!

Thank you so much!

Jon

[Ep 5] Robbie Cumming (YouTuber & BBC Canal Boat Diaries)

Hey, this is On The Fly with Jon Gill...

where I speak to Inspiring, creative, inventive people pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology.

This is episode 5 with English YouTuber Robbie Cumming!

Robbie has been documenting his narrowboat life on the canals of the UK for several years. He captures everything on his mobile phone and edits on a tablet and posts to YouTube where he currently has just over 17,000 subscribers.

YouTube and Canal Boat Diaries (BBC)

About a year ago he was approached by BBC Four to adapt his YouTube format into a short series of TV episodes. Subsequently five episodes of Canal Boat Diaries were broadcast in October 2019. Series two is currently filming under lockdown conditions.

Amazingly Robbie is using the same mobile approach with some additional GoPro and drone footage from the BBC side of production.

We talk about his process and what this means for the future of TV and mobile content creators.

Song of the episode

Easy! Room To Roam by the Water Boys (from 1990 fact fans, which means I've final broken the cycle of hits from the 1970s by two decades!)
Here's a great version recorded live with an orchestra in Huntley, Scotland.

Conveniently, to find Robbie, his videos, BBC page, music, clothing, social media and Patreon page, you need only one link: www.robbiecumming.com

Robbie's recommendation is "ETTV" on Youtube... mesmerising!

Apps

Robbie uses a couple of apps – you may be familiar with them by now... but here's the links anyway:

So if you’d like to learn more about telling your story using a mobile then please get in touch.

And remember, that this 'pod' was #MadeOnAMobile

[Ep 3] Christian Payne aka Documentally (creative social technologist)

[Ep 3] Christian Payne aka Documentally (creative social technologist)

Hey this is On The Fly with Jon Gill

Where I speak to Inspiring, creative, inventive people pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology.

This is episode 3 with Christian Payne aka Documentally

He’s got a very varied background –

He was in a band, he was a press photographer... and he’s travelled… a lot..!

Now

He’s settled into an equally diverse mix of journo-documen-technologist, particularly knowledgable regarding all things audio...  but the bottom line is that he’s a great example of someone who has carved their own furrow and made it his job.

In this episode we talk about social media, how he’s structured his business model, the secret life of his Italian grandmother… and there’s more, so much more. We said we'd keep it short but after a couple of hours we wrapped things up and I decide to cut this into two episodes. That's not to say it'll be two 60 minute runs because there's a metal/grunge music tangent that will never see the light of day.

So part two will follow in a week or two..!?

Song of the episode

The tune for Christian is “3 is the magic number” from 1973 by Bob Dorough – you could also check out the DeLaSoul version but, for legal reasons surrounding the samples, you won’t find it streaming other than copies on YouTube.

Apart from being episode three (which isn't the reason) let me know if you work it out why this song applies to Christian.

There are a couple of musical-ish experimentations in this and the next episode… listen out for those!

Find Christian's "Dispatches" here:

Website: documentally.com

We’ll talk about "Dispatches" in the next episode but I heartily recommend them.

Welcome to my podcast... "On The Fly"

It's been a long time coming, but I bet you never gave it a second thought!

My first guest is one of the first people I stumbled across online who helped me realise that using a mobile phone for photography or filmmaking was legitimate. I'd been using my mobile in this way for 5 or 6 years at this point and Jack's Twitter feed and e-news letters were an oasis of both inspiration and validation.

I met him in at MoJoFest 2019. Today (Wednesday 13 May, as I write) would have been MoJoFest 2020. So to commemorate I set myself the deadline of posting not one but two podcasts. This is the Apple flavour – Jack has a history with the phones and the company. Episode 2 will be Tim Bingham – street photographer extraordinaire – who is a fan of "the Android". Both make stunning work with their tools of choice so no-one has an excuse not to be inspired and go out and be creative.

Song of the week – It has to be "Going Mobile" by The Who. Dedicated to Jack who, after 30 years as a pro, DSLR man, switched to mobile and hasn't looked back. In our chat he explains why and his hopes for the future of mobile photography.

Jack's recommendations: FiLMiC First Light photo app – available for both Apple and Android in their respective stores.
www.FiLMiCPro.com

Movies and music, anything epic! Gladiator (15), Lord of The Rings (12A)

My recommendation for all you homeworkers... Hanz Zimmer live in Prague – available to stream on both Netflix (video) and Amazon Prime (audio).

On The Fly – Episode one coming soon...

On The Fly – Episode one coming soon...

Today (Wednesday 13 May) should have been #MoJoFest in London as part of the The Media Production & Technology Show...   So, the time was right to reach out to some of the folks I met last year and help bridge the gap between the mobile community and everyone else who also owns a phone or tablet.

Week one is Jack Hollingsworth, pro photographer of 40 years. Almost 10 years ago he went mobile – exclusively – in the podcast he explains why and share tips and tricks for anyone interested in going mobile with photography.  This is a teaser – the podcast will be available later today along with a bonus edition... more later!  #podcast #CPD #photography #MadeOnAMobile
