#1ONSectors: Jumia's role in Uganda and Africa - Ron Kawamara.

Forbes ranked Uganda seventh of the countries with the highest internet penetration in Africa in 2018. Thanks to technology, in particular, the smartphone has changed the way people shop. E-commerce is rapidly growing in Uganda, and it is expected to shortly become the second largest online market in the East Africa region, after Kenya. This is mainly due to our rapid growth in telecommunications users and like you said the widespread use of mobile money payments.

Ron Kawamara - then the CEO of Jumia Uganda held our hand in understanding the wider ecosystem, Jumia’s role on the continent, tools of the trade, terms of determining how profitable digital strategy can be, his take on scaling a business for real-time delivery, his recommendations on policy to Gov’t and private sector to accelerate his industry, the next big move and misconception about e-commerce in Uganda.

#2ONReports: Find out how AI can help you do your job better!

#2ONReports: Find out how AI can help you do your job better!

This research was intended to deliver insights to those who have a special interest in Uganda’s media industry/ experience with Covid-19/interested in the application of machine learning to media and communications research, draw correlations and build stronger research-based foundations on which to develop communications strategy.

One of the reasons they identified was that African news is commonly excluded or marginalized in academic research due to the lack of organised archives providing a convenient dataset. This data highlights the need for a renewed emphasis on communications which compromises some efforts.

  • Please note: International news agencies that sell articles/ news to Ugandan local media weren't part of the survey although the Ugandan audience is still exposed to this content.

Share your thoughts + Follow/ Subscribe and tell a friend this episode might benefit.

Episode guest: Anne Whitehead on her Twitter handle, @whiteheadcomm and white at it, check out some other cool projects on Whitehead Communication's Website.

- This episode's Survey Report here.

- Public Opinion on the Impact of Covid-19 in Uganda: Survey Report with Emmanuel Rukondo here.

  • Reports Key Highlights.

-  Challenge the status quo by applying cutting edge methods to Ugandan research and ensure that Uganda is included in the emergence of this type of research globally.

-  AWC encourages more local media houses to cooperate with international news archives, or develop APIs for easier data collection, in order to make historical articles more accessible for researchers and scholars.

-  They also encourage researchers in African countries and internationally to continue including African content in global analysis, particularly when training algorithms or otherwise contributing to a more inclusive global body of knowledge.

- Social media listening here, correction, the host mentions Facebook dropped at 1.8% instead of 9.0% yes, big difference.
