Durham Original Music & Associates Podcast (DOMAP)

Since submitting her Michaelmas Song Writing Competition entry ‘Return Home’, Taliya Hafiz (Music; St Mary’s College; 2020-2021) has gone from strength-to-strength within the DOMAN community! Alongside studying a Masters at Durham University Music Department, the Mary’s student has also allotted composing for the European Association of Tatar Woman (“Tatar Hanim”) and competing with Durham University Dancesport into her busy schedule! Though only just being able to start attending Durham University (due to the current COVID climate), it is clear to see that the events of the last year have not dented her drive to produce transcendental music in the slightest.

In this episode of the DOMAP, Alumni Relations Officer George Bone sits down with Taliya to talk about: her drive to create music through the pandemic, the importance of empowering female musicians and the artistic ramification of being a multi-linguist!

Here she is: your Epiphany Song Writing Competition Winner, Kat Pittalis! She impressed the judges with her simplistic, yet effective, timbral building in her winning song “Easier”. The passion that she conveyed through her lyricism and drive created not only an extreme contrast to her Domix submission “Mind Games”, but impressed the judges enough to beat off an extremely strong field! On the whole Kat has taken the music scene at Durham by force this year, even with all the stresses of third-year backgrounding her journey. As the deputy music editor for the Palatinate, host of her own Purple Radio show (Undiscovered Artists) and St Aidan’s College Music representative, she’s not leaving any stone unturned.

In this episode of the DOMAP, Alumni Relations Officer George Bone sits down with Kat to talk about: the pandemic on her drive to create new music, the societies and friends that are keeping her grounded, the backstory behind “Easier” and her ever metamorphosing musical spheres of influence!

As a composer for Durham-based film company Keylight Studios, and co-founder of Unredacted Production, Samuel Read (Music; St Cuthbert’s Society; 2017-2020) took every opportunity available to him by the scruff of the neck! We managed to catch an interview with Read this month on the week he began his studies at the National Film and Television School: marking his transition away from undergraduate life, to that of a postgraduate.

In this episode of the DOMAP, Alumni Relations Officer George Bone and President Taylor Morse talk about - among other things - the ramification of COVID on the film industry, and the “bittersweet” feeling of working on a movie centred around the pandemic we are very much still living through. We even attempt to cause a riff between him and his studio, with Read - to our dismay - not giving in to peer pressure!

Samuel Read:

NYPA are a post-punk, krautrock group formed last academic year. After months of improvisational sessions, Samuel Osman, Andrews Anderson, Dylan Wright, Mussa Ahmad, Tom Hutchinson and Xavier Crean recently recorded and released their debut EP “Mzungu Kizungu” at Rocking Horse Studios in Durham. Underpinned by repetitive, machine-like funk grooves, the band explores an eclectic range of political, social, and emotional themes.

Ozgur Kiziltas (2nd Year; Collingwood), while only recently delving into live performances of his eclectic soundscape, has shone recently through both virtual performances, and airtime from BBC Introducing in the North East. Through the infusion of classical and contemporary influences, Oz’s ethereal compositions aim to exploit a very prevalent gap in the Durham music marketspace.
