Sermon on the 5th Sunday in Lent - John 11:1-46
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl based on the gospel text for the day: John 11:1-46. The gospel reading tells the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus' death and resurrection foreshadow Jesus' soon to come death and resurrection. Where the world places a period, God creates a comma. God brings new life even out of death. God in Christ calls us forth from the tomb, and just as Lazarus' friends and family help to unbind him from his grave clothes, so too are we called to help unbind one another from whatever bondage in we find ourselves stuck: be it fear, isolation, turmoil, worry or shame. God calls us to be unbinders in and for our world.

Sermon on the 6th Sunday after the Epiphany - Matthew 5:21-37
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl based on the gospel text for the day: Matthew 5:21-37. The gospel reading continues for the third segment of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which began 2 weeks ago. In this middle section of Jesus’ sermon, he is addressing particular injustices in the culture of the day, drawing attention to the purpose of the Law, given as gift and guide to God’s people for the sake of good relationships, healthy and safe communities, and justice and care for all, especially the most vulnerable. Jesus seems to emphasize that God doesn’t care that we keep the Law for the Law’s sake, rather God cares that we strive to live under God’s law and commandments for OUR sake, and especially for the sake of our neighbor.

Sermon of the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany - Matthew 5:1-12
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl, based on the gospel text from Matthew 5:1-12. This gospel reading includes the beginning of Jesus’ sermon of the Mount. Jesus begins his long sermon (which will cover many different aspects of life and faith) with statements of blessing, often referred to as the Beatitudes. These statements of blessing confer God’s favor on those not typically viewed as “blessed” in the world, and yet Jesus speaks a word of blessing on them. God is present and linked to all who suffer and struggle (including us!) just as we are linked to God in the ways we bear hope and healing in our world where there is suffering and struggle. Jesus describes the Kingdom of God, where the poor, left out, and struggling folks are included and cared for. Jesus describes the Kingdom of God, where disciples bear hope, healing, mercy and justice. As members of God’s Kingdom, we are linked to God’s work in the world!

Sermon on the Baptism of our Lord - Matthew 3:13-17
In our gospel for this day, we hear Matthew's account of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. John protests in baptizing Jesus, saying that Jesus should be baptizing HIM, and not the other way around! But Jesus answers John's resistance with a reminder that no one baptizes themselves, including Jesus. We are all baptized into something bigger than us - into the body of Christ, into communion with God and one another, and into a life of discipleship - all of this surrounded by the uncompromising promise of God's love, regardless of what we will do or fail to do.  Even Jesus was baptized - and just as Jesus was proclaimed beloved by God, so too, are we. Thanks be to God!

Sermon on the Fourth Sunday of Advent - Matthew 1:18-25
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl, reflecting on the gospel text from Matthew 1:18-25. The Season of Advent (Advent, which means arrival) calls us to watch and wait for the coming of the Lord in all the ways that God shows up in our lives and in our faith.  In our gospel for this day, we hear Matthew's account of the birth of Jesus. Both Mary and Joseph leaned in to God's promises and calling, and they helped bear Jesus: the love of God in and for our world. We are called too, to lean in to God's promises and callings; to lean in to who God has created us to be; to lean in to our own uniqueness and to use our gifts to bear love in our world.

Sermon on the Third Sunday of Advent - Matthew 11:2-11
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl, reflecting on the gospel text from Matthew 11:2-11. The Season of Advent (Advent, which means arrival) calls us to watch and wait for the coming of the Lord in all the ways that God shows up in our lives and in our faith. In our gospel for this day, John the Baptist, from prison, expressed uncertainty about Jesus as Messiah, and Jesus responds with encouragement and patient love. God in Christ enters into our doubt, pain, and suffering. The light of Christ shines into our deepest need with hope and promise.

Sermon on the First Sunday of Advent - Matthew 24:36-44
A sermon by Pastor Heather Wigdahl, reflecting on the gospel text from Matthew 24:36-44 and a reading from Isaiah 2:1-5. The Season of Advent (Advent, which means arrival) calls us to watch and wait for the coming of the Lord in all the ways that God shows up in our lives and in our faith. The gospel is apocalyptic in style and leads us to consider the ways in which Christ comes among us outside of our expectation and in ways that often surprise us. The good news for us is that God has been, is, and will be present with us, for us, and through us.
