ANIMISERY: Junji Ito Collection (feat. Otaku Host Club)
What do you do when you have some masterful example of manga with a mangaka who has talents almost insurmountable in artistic quality in vision? Why you make an anime adaptation that completely butchers his work and vision while bringing his name to shame! Studio Deen sure thinks that's the way to make an anime adaptation as we celebrate the last (functioning) week of June-ji Ito Month by reviewing Junji Ito Collection! With a pedigree of such high standards (and plus since Brad couldn't be in this week), we got some help for this with some of our best podcast boys and girls: the Otaku Host Club! We talk hard about what is actual spooky, popping zits, and if Junji Ito hit the bong a little bit to write his works among a few other things but I can't really spoil that cause I have to entice you to listen to the episode and all. I really wasn't ready to have to host an episode all by myself. I don't like being mean. JUNE-JI ITO: Tomie
We're wrapping up our Junji Ito manga coverage (hint hint for what's coming next if you care, I guess) this week with the first of his works: Tomie! We're cut Tomie to pieces to find out what parts we like and what parts we don't and all the filler meat in between and we have some feelings. Are they good? Are they bad? I guess you'll have to listen in to find out in the episode itself. Wait. Did I do this bit already? It all blurs together. You know what doesn't blur together? Junji Ito's magnificent work! AY YO! Always leave them with a fairly weak zinger. Anyways here we go, I'm wrapping this up. JUNE-JI ITO: Uzumaki
Get your leaf village headbands and shuriken ready as we cover this Naruto spin-off, Uzumaki! I'm really looking forward into seeing how Junji Ito handles such a beloved character especially with his unique brand of horr- oh wait. I just checked the Wikipedia page and apparently this is not about ninjas and talking people to death. It's about scary spirals??? That's weird. Well, I guess we're spiraling into a special sort of madness with the next week of June-ji Ito month as we cover Uzumaki! One of Ito's three seminal works, this is the tale of a town and how a mysterious plague of spirals affects the people who live within. Sounds kind of lame, huh? Couldn't be any lamer than that "I didn't know this wasn't a Naruto spin-off hurrdeedurr" joke I lead in with but hey! This is actually pretty good so don't let the description fool you. It's not like you didn't know this was going to be scary anyways. Maybe you don't know much about Junji Ito and this will all be new to you? I don't know your life. You never returned my letters. I gaze out at the sea everyday hoping for the mail carrier to send me word of your exploits in the war. It's been three seasons of grief since I last held a page containing pieces of your heart. This cruel war has taken so much from me. Anyways, spirals. They're scary, yo. That's the episode. JUNE-JI ITO: Gyo
The puns keeping coming as we celebrate another venerable creator in the world of weebdom and that's Junji Ito in this month of June-ji Ito! I can hear you saying it now: "but Person Who Writes These Descriptions, it's not time for spooky at all!" and that's gonna be where you're wrong. It's always a good time for puns and that means it's time for spooky cause June-ji Ito Month is such a great pun and it would be fishy of us if we didn't celebrate. Speaking of fishy (due to how the mail and our local book retailers choose to operate), we're kicking off June-ji Ito Month with Gyo! Is it a good starting point for two absolute noobs at horror in general or is it just the stench of something awful to come? We discuss Gyo, horror, and Doki Doki Literature Club all in this episode so, you know, check it out. If you want, I guess. I'm not gonna force you. As always, check out new episodes every Tuesday by going to our website at www.otakumelancholy.com to see all our links including our social media and join the Discord at https://discord.gg/rUHYUyW to continue the conversation! WAS IT THAT HYPE?: Sword Art Online [Season One]
What is there to say about Sword Art Online that thousands of AniTubers and wannabe AniTubers haven't already said? What plot hole hasn't already been poked holes in to death and how many times can you discuss how boring certain characters are? Is there even a point to talking about it at this point? We're gonna find out in this episode as we FULL DIVE in to talk about 2012's Sword Art Online and see if we actually have anything new to say but honestly we aren't. It's kind of just done to death yet here we are to plop one more turd of a discussion on the already heaping pile of crap that is the Sword Art Online discourse. Just like what you like, you know? Listen in and hear us point out the same flaws someone else with a better mic and a far more handsome face and better editing skills already has! At least we have spirit, I guess. I'm too tired to have spirit right now. MAY-AZAKI - The Wind Rises
We're wrapping up the merry month of May-azaki with his latest (but maybe not so greatest) movie: The Wind Rises! It's all about planes and the inventor of the legendary Zero aerocraft Jiro Horikoshi but does this movie soar above the clouds with the rest or does it fall right out of the sky right into the pits of mediocrity? Well, it's Miyazaki so you know it's not going to be bad but hey! I have to entice you to listen by raising the stakes so here are you stakes as you like them: medium rare and slightly raised! Would you like some stake sauce with that? These are good puns, Matt. Remember to use them in the show where people actually care later. You're right, Matt. I will. Have I filled in enough space yet? Eh. It's good enough for now. I'll fill in with more description if someone says something. Probably. MAY-AZAKI - Howl's Moving Castle
If there was every truly a "most handsome boy in all of anime" then it would surely be Howl from this film. Miyazaki is at it again with the sheer whimsy in his 2004 creation which we're talking all about in this episode! Cubby holes for your boots, the best way to eat eggs, and the origin of chicken and waffles are all discussed as well as a little bit about this movie (I guess if that's why you're actually here for some reason) so sit down, listen in, and let us help carry the heavy burden of your heart by interjecting a little bit of WHIMSY in your life for like an hour or so. Spring 2021 Preview - Part Two
Another episode! Another batch of shows! Another bunch of first impressions and thoughts! In this episode we're covering Higehiro, To Your Eternity, Osamake, Shadows House, Zombie Land Saga Revenge, Godzilla S.P., Koikimo, Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song, SSSS Dynazenon, Pretty Detective Club, and Combatants Will Be Dispatched! There's a lot of "meh" feelings in this episode but that's why we have first impressions cause we don't know what a lot of these shows will end up like, you know? It doesn't mean that Amelia isn't wrong about To Your Eternity though cause she is. Speaking of Amelia, you can catch her on YouTube at www.youtube.com/c/MOESODA and on her podcast Otaku Host Club with her co-hosts Geoff and Dan! Spring 2021 Preview - Part One
We're doing Friday episodes for a minute cause we just had so much content we wanted to pump out but just didn't have the Tuesdays in the month for it. When Brad says you can do seasonal previews, you do seasonal previews! After the banging season that was Winter 2021, how do you come back from that? What can you possibly throw out that means anything compared to what we just got? Well, Spring 2021 is here to try and hook us with the shamisen, tan bully waifus, and even more slime! We watched all we could and we're talking about it in this (first) episode including 86, I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, Dragon Goes House Hunting, The Slime Diaries, Tokyo Revengers, Mars Red, Don’t Toy With Me Miss Nagatoro, Those Snow White Notes, Full Dive: The Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life!, and Odd Taxi! Is any of this crap actually good are is it all just aimless fluff to distract you from the fact that you're going to die some day? It can be both! It can be good yet also keep the creeping thoughts that soon the grip of death will coil its hand tightly around your life and remove you from this mortal coil! MAY-AZAKI - Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro
We're dedicating this whole month to anime's most well known (and possibly greatest) auteur: Hayao Miyazaki! In this merry month of May-azaki, we're going to be seeing where Mr. Miyazaki started from and where he ended up as we review four of his movies from his very first (this very episode you're about to be listening to or might be listening to already, I dunno) to his latest! In this episode, we're discussing his feature length film debut: Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro! We break down all the fun things that Miyazaki brought to the Lupin lore and what this movie brings out in us as well as all the little things we enjoyed including clock towers, Wikipedia articles, and whimsical castles! Does this film stack up against Lupin III: The First or is it just an overhyped piece of adventure cinema that has been overblown by time because of the name attached to it? I mean, it's Miyazaki so you know it's not gonna be the latter option but I have to raise the stakes or why would you listen? This description business is rough. WAS IT THAT HYPE?: Mirai Nikki
Imagine this: some crazy CGI god has the audacity to force you to fight for his job (which he isn't really that great at) with your future predicting cell phone while this kinda crazy kinda hot girl that you casually said at one point that you might marry murders anyone who would make the foolish mistake of even breathing the same air as you? If you can imagine that then congrats! You can kind of imagine this week's episode (and also you have a great imagination, I'm so proud of you) of WAS IT THAT HYPE (name subject to change) where we talk all about Mirai Nikki (or The Future Diary if you wanna call it that). We're talking all about how much we love Yuno Gasai, how much we don't love Yukiteru Amano, and Brad comes to the revelations that he might be the very thing he despises. Is Mirai Nikki an actual classic or is it just coasting on its pure edge? We'll probably find out all about that and more in this week's episode! Way of the Househusband
Netflix dropped a new "anime" so you know we had to talk about it especially since it's an adaptation of a manga which means that the fact it isn't like the manga is basically the only thing Matt talks about. Don't you get tired of hearing "well, in the manga" all the time? Yeah, there's like five episodes and they're all basically ten minutes long but we can stretch this out content! We're discuss all of Tatsu's hilarious antics and what makes a good adaptation and a little bit about Eragon too! I'm super tired so I'm wrapping this up. Have a great time or something! Winter 2021 Seasonal Anime Review
We're back at it again with the seasonal reviews and we have 11 shows to discuss and talk about this time which I guess is an okay number for doing this seasonal watching thing. We also have time stamps so you can skip all the useless stuff like us talking about our day and lives and favorite things and our actual thoughts and all our hopes, dreams, and fleeting ambitions. You know. All the stuff that no one cares about. We also have our seasonal correspondent Amelia from the Otaku Host Club podcast and her soon to be hit YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/MOESODA) back so it's an extra fun episode too! Listen in and find out what in this packed season was actually worth watching according to Matt and Amelia while Brad interjects every now and then! Can you believe that he watched like 7 shows this time last year but only 2 this one? The competitive sport of seasonal anime watching really does destroy the most promising athletes. It's tragic. He can barely walk now. I see him gazing out the windows of his room every now and then. His face echoes a sentiment he has long since abandoned of chasing waifus and love that he will never be able to grasp now that he's confined to his wheelchair. He was so young and full of promise but it was ripped away from him in just the blink of an eye. Anime truly is hell. ANIMISERY: My Sister, My Writer (feat. The Strictly Series)
We're back at it again with the siscon anime so you know we had to get someone else involved to suffer with us! If we just covered these shows by ourselves then it would be just two guys creepily discussing all the ways that incest is cool (or not cool, I GUESS) or something but if we get other people involved then we're not absolutely culpable for all the weirdness that happens and we can totally deviate all blame onto them or something. We got Courtney and Karl from the Strictly Series (that includes the Strictly Anime and Strictly JoJo podcasts which you should totally go check out right now don't even finish reading this sentence do it now k thanks) to check out 2018's prestigiously bad siscon anime My Sister, My Writer and it was a ride. Or maybe it wasn't? I have to leave like a hook or a line or something that will make you curious and check out the episode, yeah? That's what being a good showman is all about and the circus has definitely come to town in this anime as we see and talk all about characters with eyes that pop right out of their head and girls who have just the kind of oppai that make just the kind of noises that make you question the physical world around you. Listen in and see if this show is just enough bad to be good or if it's just too good at being bad! Be sure to check out the Strictly Series network of shows and see all of their info by visiting their website at www.thestrictlyseries.com and follow them on Instagram at @thestrictlyseries and Twitter at @strictlyseries. ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 75 - "Above and Below"
It is finished (for now)! No more double episodes! We had a lot of fun but all good things have to be put on hold as we conclude the first part of Attack on Titan's final season and think a little bit about just how we got here but it's mostly more Pieck discussion. Does she lose points for saving Gabi? Yeah but she's still best girl. It was a ride up to this point, though it had some ups and downs, and we enjoyed getting to hang out with you each weekWe.  can't wait for when Attack on Titan returns so we can talk about it with you folk again! WAS IT THAT HYPE?: Angel Beats
Does a show being sad actually make it hype? From a literal standpoint, no. It's very hard to rave with tears in your eyes. That said, we already picked a terrible name for this series of episodes and we have to keep to it so... Here's our episode on Angel Beats! Is it a trip to anime hell, anime heaven, or anime purgatory? Technically, it's the last one but I'm tired. Listen in, hear us talk about the meaning of life or something, and just hang out or something, I guess. I'm tired. I can fix this description later, right? Does anyone actually read this? Secret pro play tip in the show notes: crack a raw egg in your fresh and hot steamed rice to make it super creamy and delicious! It's really good! I don't even like egg and I do it! Bet you're really psyched that you read the description now, right? Come back next week for more cooking tips in the next Otaku Melancholy episode description section! ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 73 & 74 - "Savagery" & "Sole Salvation"
It's Attack on Zeke-tan (that sounds better out loud) as we get double episodes both kinda focusing on the Monke Titan's bearded boi. The gears are really moving in this double feature with friends and foes breaking their ties with one another and even breaking a few bones in the process too. With one more episode due, this final season of Attack on Titan is burning it's plot fast as we see all the pieces fall into place for Paradis to change... And maybe not for the better. Listen in to this episode and fill your ears with out thoughts of what these episodes mean and how we think the story might wrap up for AoT. Also included is a rant on Zack Snyder's Justice League for free too! Made in Abyss
We stare into the Abyss in this episode as we discuss the adventures of Riko (no relation to Starship Troopers Riko) and Reg (no relation to that other Reg you might know) as they delve deep into the cursed Abyss to find Riko's mother and why Reg is part Go Go Gadget Extendo Arm and how they maybe should've packed some extra bottles of club soda to get all those pee and blood stains out of their sheets in 2017's classic Made in Abyss! You might want to get advice from your local religious leader because this episode is especially hole-y! I hope you'll dig it! I'm gonna keep shoveling this hole puns at you cause I've got plenty of this dirt and... Yeah, that's it. We discuss stuff. You know how it goes. Is Made in Abyss good? Yeah. I mean, we all know it is. What we don't know is why Sentai Filmworks wants to charge me 20 dollars to rent a movie and I'm not going to let this go at all. ANSWER ME YOU COWARDS. Anime Super Smashers: We Pick Characters for Our Anime Smash Bros.
We go 1v1 with the creative process in this episode as we figure out just what characters we'd put in our version of anime Smash Bros! It's in the title but also I'm just clarifying for any mild confusion. We decide who is "classic" and "iconic" enough to be put in the illustrious roster of this imaginary game that we concoct and one of us also throws a character from 2020 just because. So who is really Smash-worthy and who is assist trophy worthy? We answer part of this question as we wavedash ourselves right into a corner and jump off the map as we try to pick characters, move sets, stages, and even a little bit of taunts in this episode! It's fun. As always, check out new episodes every Tuesday by going to our website at www.otakumelancholy.com to see all our links including our social media and join the Discord at https://discord.gg/rUHYUyW to continue the conversation and share with us who you would put in your roster for Anime Smash! ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 71 - "Guides"
Heaven got a new angel in this episode... right? I mean, someone got something. I don't know if you get rejected from going to heaven just because you made someone eat their own "stuff". It doesn't say that you can't not do that in any religion, yeah? Anyways, stuff actually kinda happened in this episode and we actually kinda talk about it. Lupin the Third: The First
Since the dawn of time, man has asked: "if it's completely CG, does that still make it anime?" Many wars have been fought and so much blood has been shed seeking for the final answer to this cursed question. You cannot convince me that The War of the Roses wasn't about anything else. Anyways, Lupin the Third pops his head out and says "I'm gonna refuel the fires of war once again" and now here we are watching a CG anime(?) all about the latest exploits of the master thief and SWEET LITTLE BABY JESUS WITH HIS BABY EINSTEIN EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS AND GERBER'S BABY FOOD MADE WITH REAL ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. This movie is absolutely gorgeous. But is it good? Looks can only get you so far because you have to have a personality too if you actually want to make anything of yourself. Unfortunately I don't have either but does Lupin the Third: The First have what it takes to be a modern masterpiece or is it just all thrill with no kill? We talk all about this and a lot more including Fujiko Mine's ara~ and what series we think could have another solid CG adaptation. I'm not doing spoiler buffer for this one. I'm about to drop some real truth that you need to hear. THAT HORSE IS 2021'S BEST ANIME CHARACTER, YO. Calling it right now so just go ahead and check on me in a year when that horse wins my best boy/girl in the OtaMel Aniwards or whatever. Anyways, in this episode, we get a lot of Falco and Gabi and that's okay, I guess. We talk about the obvious lessons that we've already learned (like not to be racist), we defend season two of Attack on Titan for some reason, and we discuss the creativity bankrupted nature of a certain "wizarding world" author. It just kind of descends into that. I'm tired. I got this new tea and it tastes really good but it just relaxes me too much so now I can't even finish these descriptions without yawning. WAS IT THAT HYPE?: K-on!
Joined by our friend SilentKitten from our Discord (and real life too, I suppose), we join the light music club and rock out to some of our favorite moements (it's a combination of moe and moments!) and ask if 2009's K-on! really is worth being one of the popular anime of that year and maybe in general. Which girl is best? Which girl is worst? Which girl is most mediocre? Why does Ritsu's forehead make me feel weird things? We dive into a discussion on what makes moe and what makes for some great cute comfort as we talk all about the beloved KyoAni's past works and compare them to each other just to see what works and just what doesn't. Is this anime really worth the time or a vast majority of weebs just suckers for moe blobs? You should definitely listen in and find out although I don't think we really answer it but I'm trying to wrap up this episode description so hey. ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 69 - "A Sound Argument"
Why, hello. I see you're here ready to listen to another episode of Attalk on Titan. Specifically, you're here to listen specifically to our discussion on episode 69. How do you feel? Are you ready for our long and hard discussion on (episode) 69? I bet you are, you naughty weeb. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Anyways, that's enough immature spoiler buffer. Badly timed flashbacks, bandage revelation, and pregnancy reveals galore in this episode of AoT! That's all the ingredients for an awful soap opera and we're gonna break that down as we dive into another rousing talk on one more massive lore dump episode of Attack on Titan! Well, it's as rousing as any other talk that involves 69, I guess. Hey yo! Ba dum tss. A Very Scum's Wish Valentine (feat. The Weebology Podcast)
We're talking all about therapy dogs, why you need to just shut your kids down and tell them they aren't princesses and that Santa is a corporate lie, and what it means to be the loneliest number 66 in this episode! Joined by the very big wrinkly brained hosts of The Weebology Podcast, we also talk about 2017's Scum's Wish but you know that's just a pretense for us to talk about anime dicks or something. It's all just a segue into having a conversation about anime butts at this point. It's also a Valentine's episode so maybe go listen with your partner or something? I'd do it. The sultry tones of Ethan and Rick will be the perfect thing to have in the background as you hold hands in front of the fire, you sick degenerates. I bet you don't even wear gloves when you do it. You're just asking for an anime pregnancy at that rate. So join us as we dive into another "interesting" romance anime with some of our fellow anime podcasters and go to https://weebology.buzzsprout.com to check out all of The Weebology Podcast's links to their awesome and thought provoking content! ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 68 - "Brave Volunteers"
The big info dump episodes return as we get another episode of people talking about people and how those people treat other people that they don't really see as people and how those people (who aren't considered people) feel about those people. Alright, now that the spoiler buffer is out of the way, in this episode we see the origin of the Marley heist (it's not really a heist but hey I think it sounds cool) and we see a little bit of the fallout of the loss of our dearly beloved. Also Brad was totally right about them just throwing crystal Annie in jail. That was weird. The Journeymonogatari continues (after like 2 months or something, huh?) as we dive into the series of Kizumonogatari films that feature the real hottest vampire "dommy mommy", Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade! And there's a lot of Tsubasa here too! But... something is definitely off about her which you'll find out all about in this episode! Hop all aboard the waifu train with us as we talk wicked cool fight scenes, awkward watch parties, and confusing time lines in this episode! I don't really know what to type for this description. I hope you'll listen to this episode even if you know nothing about Monogatari cause I think it's pretty good. Like it's a solid episode. Probably a 7.5/10 one. Definitely not an 8. ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 67 - "Assassin's Bullet"
All these other podcasts that are doing weekly Attack on Titan episodes just immediately put THE BIG EPISODE SPOILER in the first part of their episodes description but I respect you, my dear listener, and how you're waiting for all of the last season of Attack on Titan to come out so you can binge it. Thusly, I'm gonna stall for time so this first line you see when you see this episode is posted isn't THE BIG EPISODE SPOILER. So let's chitchat. How are you? Is work going well? Is your favorite sports team winning their matches? How about those sport teams? I think this is enough buffer, yeah? You shouldn't be able to see the fact that I HATE GABI SO MUCH SHE KILLED POTATO QUEEN AND I WANT HER TO DIE AND IN THIS EPISODE WE TALK TOP TEN WAYS TO PUNCH GABI IN THE FACE I DON'T CARE IF SHE'S A KID SHE KILLED MY BAETATO AND SHE MUST SUFFER. ANIMISERY: Domestic Girlfriend (feat. The Anime Brothers)
We're talking an incest anime (that isn't really incest) this time so we brought on two brothers (who aren't really brothers) to come on and talk all about the forbidden fruit of familial love (that isn't really the forbidden fruit of familiar love). We're talking all about 2019's Domestic Girlfriend (or Domestic na Kanojo if you wanna be THAT guy) in this episode in a brazen attempt to just straight up turn off one of the brothers on romance anime completely. Does it work? Spoilers: not really. This episode is still worth checking out to see the very lax Hina vs. Rui fight and to learn all about the "pedophile clique" that this show has. We also talk about our awkward first sexual experiences and we even feature like 10 seconds of a very Nickelback song (that we VERY OBVIOUSLY don't own the rights to so please don't kill me RIAA or whoever does the suing for this kind of thing) that is very special to one of the brothers and his romantic conquest of a mattress. We talk a little bit less about anime than normal in this episode but it's probably still fun, yeah? Probably. Craig laughed at part of it so you know it has to be a little good. Or maybe it isn't. Just like how the Scout Corps assaulted the Marleyans, MAPPA decided to assault our opinions on their CG skills. Not only do we get to see some hype beast Titan vs Titan vs Human vs Human battles, but we also get a nice B-story on some Titan cuisine, like BBQ and jawbreakers. Even Armin shows up to show us MLG level Alabama fishing. Oh and we talk about some CG techniques and behind the scenes production shenanigans or something. Yawn. JUST GET TO THE FOIGHTIN'! WAS IT THAT HYPE?: Toradora
Is it good? Is it bad? Whatever it is, it's Toradorable! We're starting a new series where we review the most popular show of each year (according to MAL numbers so we might easily make us look stupid in a few years or something) and reviewing them to ask the question: is this show actually that good or is it just overhyped? We're starting with 2008's Toradora which is basically just tsundere central with Taiga and other characters who are just there, I guess. Do you really care about anyone else but Taiga? Like for real? I remember the bird and the mom but I don't know if that's exactly something I SHOULD remember. I also remember that Ami is best so don't @ me, guys. ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 65 - "The War Hammer Titan"
We finally get to see the War Hammer Titan in this episode! And some other things too but they're not as important as the War Hammer Titan! Some CG was on display in this episode and maybe it wasn't the best? Just maybe? I'm not judging. Well, I am but that's what this thing is, right? Like we have to judge and talk about the episodes or there wouldn't be content. Anyways, new Attalk on Titan episode! We talk about if the CG was actually THAT bad, what we think could happen in the future, and you know. More stuff. Doing this Attalk on Titan descriptions every week is exhausting. like what do I say about the show? How many more times do I have to do this? At least ten, I think. A Year of Otaku Melancholy! - What We Learned (and Didn't Learn), the Anime We Watched, and Reflections
I honestly thought we would've dropped out before we got to a year of doing this but here we are. There is no reason for us to survive a year of doing this really. We're taking an entire episode to talk about what happened in the past year so this kind of counts as like a recap episode or something? I mean, it's important so don't skip it like you would with anime or anything! We reflect on wrapping up what I guess is the first season of this show as we talk about why we did it, the fun experiences we had, and we get really sentimental or something. I get sentimental. Like legitimately teary-eyed. Enjoy this softer episode as we talk about the friendships, the moments, and all the things that made this year of doing the podcast an amazing one! We love our listeners and thank you so much for making us a part of your life and year or whatever! Special shout out to everyone who called in and left us e-mails! Fall 2020 Season Review (Or What We Watched Of It)
Just as a warning, we're both tremendously drained and have kind of low energy in this episode because life just threw both of us for a wicked suplex from the top rope. That's how suplexes work, right? Well, you can't have a good season every season, right? I mean, I'm not talking about the quality of the shows in this season but about the sheer few numbers we managed to get through this time. Life happens and you can't do a whole lot but we tried at least! We'll try to do better next season and watch at least three times as many shows next season, I swear! We're talking all about the latest and last shows that graced out screens in 2020 and they were a tremendously mixed bag. In this episode, we're covering the delightful treat of Wandering Witch: Journey of Elaina, the thrilling Talentless Nana, the hilarious Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle, the touching comedy The Day I Became a God, the lovey dovey doki doki Tonikaku Kawaii, and the simply badass Akudama Drive. ATTALK ON TITAN: Episode 62 - "The Door of Hope"
It's a big ol' flashback to the initial invasion of Paradis as we see from Reiner's perspective just what the toll of war has on the people who dive into it.  We also see a bigger amount of backstory on what it takes to be one of the Nine (just a little bit) as well as some more of Annie after about two seasons of her being largely absent. Maybe that's for the better as we see her just brutalize a bug and that's just kind of creepy. Anyways, it's a whole bunch of Reiner so if you're not a Reiner fan then what are you gonna do? A certain character does make an awesome appearance at the end of the show though and that's pretty hype! We talk about all of that and more in this week's episode of ATTALK ON TITAN! Praise the sun, Animisery is over. No more of this. Last one for a long long long time. The evil is dead or at least severely hospitalized for an extended period. In this Animisery, we're covering Kodomo no Jikan and it's... Man, it's just hard. Do you think it's easy watching this? Do you think we're happy watching little kids show their panties and stuff in an anime? I'm not. I'm uncomfortable. I'm in distress. How am I gonna handle the social media for this? Steins;Gate || Hacking to the Great
Ah, the time loop. What was once a curse that only the most kawaii of all anime characters Bill Murray had to experience in the movie Groundhog Day is now something that almost every Japanese high school student has to go through once in their lives from the S.O.S. Brigade to Natsuki Subaru. Well, college students are no exceptions as Okabe Rintaro finds himself repeating a few days in his life trying to prevent an event he would really not see for the 100th time and also a dystopian future where a secret organization has taken over the world. Changing world lines, Okabe is on a quest to change the future and also maybe preserve his immortal metabolism since the man drinks enough soft drinks to make his pee corrosive to steel. That's Steins;Gate and that's what we're talking in this episode! It's Matt's favorite anime and he got to pick the coping mechanism this week as 2020 draws to a close and he chose rewatching his all time great for the fiftieth time! Get your Juicy Karaage Number One heated up in the Phone Microwave (Name Subject to Change) and listen in with us as we talk all about the craziness of time travel in not just anime but EVERYTHING, why you need a neko chuuni cat maid in your life, and what makes a 10 out of 10 show... if only for like a second. Sorry for the rush in the opening! I was coming down off a caffeine fueled bender rage from the last record and kind of just didn't even care to introduce ourselves. Anyways! The final season of Attack on Titan is here and we're present to discuss all about it in our latest series: ATTALK ON TITAN or THE ATTALK ON TITANS if you like that better. I'm not picky but I like to give you guys options. We're going to talk all about each episode every Friday and put out our own ridiculous fan theories and speculations as anime only fans and also as fans of preposterous story telling because hey. That's fun, right? Maybe? MAPPA has taken the reigns from Studio Wit and are here to take us on one final journey outside of the walls to fight titans and possibly an even worse monsters: other humans.  Will Eren and the gang be able to finally topple the harsh Marley empire and stop the creation of more Titans or are the walls of Paradis finally crumble? In this episode, we talk all about the hotness that is Reiner's new goatee, what Eren could possible be doing after 4 years, and the game Titanfall if only for a hot second. LISTENER REQUEST: Non Non Biyori (and accidentally Repeat too)
Nyanpasu~! We are always so appreciative when you guys tell us what to watch and what to talk about because it means we don't have to plan anything or make decision for ourselves! We hate intense decision making or our crushing free will that has failed us so much in the past! So when we were told to watch Non Non Biyori, we did (sort of). Non Non Biyori is a comfy slice of life mixed with slightly outrageous and wholesome comedy all about the life in a small town. Think basically Higurashi without all the unchecked murder and ritual sacrifices and you would basically get the same thing more or less. A city girl moves to the small town and is introduced to all the life that entails from pet tanukis, never locking your doors, and candy stores that also sell ski equipment! Is this show the kind of comfy worth talking about or is it just another slice of life on the already hefty dessert platter of anime? Listen in and find out what our thoughts could be (although I think it's obvious they're were all suckers for some moe bait here) and thanks again so much to Jayden for recommending this to us! Fall 2020 Season Preview - Part One
New season! New shows! New preview episode! We're talking about the shows from the latest season of anime and what we think about them! This episode was once again split into two parts because it was HEFTY but you know what? That's okay. In this episode, we're giving our thoughts on the first episodes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou, Ochikobore Fruit Tart, Noblesse, Iwa Kakeru Sport Climbing Girls, Tonikaku Kawaii: Over the Moon for You, Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina, Adachi and Shinamura, Yashahime, and Akudama Drive! As always, we're joined with our residential seasonal senpai Amelia from Otaku Host Club so don't be alarmed when you hear a girl's voice on this podcast. In this episode, we talk about the best girls who can climb mountains, we crack open a cold one to talk about anime waifu on waifu action, and we complain about a certain anime streaming service which can't do anything right. Also I'm still giving you times for when we talk about shows so you can skip through the podcast even though it tears me up inside. That's how much I care about you listener. 〒▽〒 Check out Amelia's podcast Otaku Host Club and go to https://www.youtube.com/moesoda to see all her weeb content! When They Cry – Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
It's spoopy month time and we're talking all about the blood soaked citizens of Hinamizawa from When They Cry in this spoopy celebration episode! I mean, what's spoopier than waifus and rural living!? Waifus who want to kill you AND rural living! Well, the thoughts I have before I go to bed are WAAAAY scarier than that but this episode isn't about the existential horror of being alive in a crumbling society! It's about the stabby stabby murder murder kind of horror! This episode we're diving deep into the thrill ride of Higurashi's first season and oh boy. Please be prepared to hear "in the visual novels though" a bit cause, of course, I can't shut up when I've actually read the source material, for real. Honestly, if you haven't seen this show and you're reading this description then please go watch it before we spoil it for you cause we have spoilers sectioned off but that's like 70% of the episode! Go treat yourself to anime! RIka's voice will soothe your soul! Anyways, listen to our discussion and review in this episode to find out if everyone in Hinamizawa is actually buff or if the gravity is just not working there, how awesome G4 was, and all about the FORBIDDEN nii-nii! No matter the timeline, we're always here to give you some anime podcast goodness so visit our website at www.otakumelancholy.com to see all our links including our social media and join the Discord at https://discord.gg/rUHYUyW to continue the conversation! ANIMISERY: In Another World With My Smartphone
What do you think would happen if you were suddenly hit by a truck? Well, you'd die of course but death seems to be just the beginning in anime as more and more teenaged youths find themselves following the disturbing trend of being transported to another world (or isekai'd if you like that term) the moment that truck-kun decides to give them just a little kiss. Such is the case again with Touya Mochizuki after Kami-sama accidentally smites him by dropping some lightning on him. Touya is then sent to another world but instead of taking something really cool he decides to take his smartphone so he can keep all his 5 star characters on FGO or Azur Lane or something. Kami-sama then gives Touya OP powers anyways and Touya goes off to collect his obligatory fantasy harem and dick around for 12 episodes and you know the drill. It's Animisery time again and we're here to cover the worst, wildest, and weirdest in anime and this show is no exception except it is the exception because it's so mild that it's bad and that's probably even worse. Or at least I think so. Are isekai actually bad though? Is there such a thing as too much anime? What is the proper temperature to melt an egg in the oven? We talk about that and more! I have a bad hangover so this description probably sucks! Summer 2020 Seasonal Review - Part Two
It's time for the second half of our seasonal review and oh geez is it powerful. I even gave you more time stamps because I care about you. Our producer Craig demanded we cut this thing in half and I'm not going to argue with him because I don't know how to work Audition and also he gives really nice gift baskets or so I've heard. I wouldn't know. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN ONE. In this episode, we're talking about ReZero Season Two, Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax, and Rent-a-Girlfriend. The waifu wars are real and they get real heavy, folk. You gotta fight for the right to your best girl in these trying times. Bring some popcorn and be wary of the secondhand embarrassment you might get from listening to it. As always, Amelia is still here and she's still as cool as she was before. Check out her podcast Otaku Host Club and go to https://www.youtube.com/moesoda to see all her weeb content cause it's good! She, at least, has good taste in waifus! Summer 2020 Seasonal Review - Part One
Hey look! I added in time stamps so you could see when we talk about a show now! Isn't that cool? Summer anime was a blazing firework that shone bright when it flared up to the reach the heavens but soon fizzled out when it exploded. Or was it? I guess you'll have to listen to these reviews to find out, huh? Or you could've watched them yourself or gone to some other review site or show and figured that out but I'm assuming that I'm your only source of anime information. Anyways listen to this episode and find out all about what was hot like the summer sands and what just wasn't. This is part one because the episode (by itself) ended up being like FOUR hours long so we're making two episodes so Craig doesn't actually end our lives. Aggretsuko
WARNING: Awful metal screaming occurs several times in this episode and once within the first minute. It's bad and I've warned you and I'm sorry. Also spoilers for all of Aggretsuko too, you know? Aggretsuko details the life of one hella cute red panda known as Retsuko as she battles the turmoil of just being alive in the actual world with jerk bosses, horny hyenas, and the sheer dread of just going to work on Monday. She also has a set of wicked pipes which she uses to voice all that tension when she goes to karaoke! Yeah, you probably know what Aggretsuko is. You've seen something about it in Target or wherever you shop which is kinda weird, right? I just need to make buffer so it looks like there's a description here that's worth reading. Anyways! Start the episode and hear the bells. There are anthros in this show and you know some of them do be lookin' kinda hot. That's just a fact. You're not a furry for thinking that. You're just a human being with two good eyes and ain't no human being with two good eyes sayin' no to the polar bear. He's why we're trying to save the polar ice caps, right? It gets somewhat real in this episode too including issues on abandoning your ideals and putting yourself in the hole over a RightStuf order you forgot about so here's your warning on that. I placed it at the bottom so you wouldn't see. I pulled a sneaky on ya! Nisemonogatari || I'm Fake But Also Real But Also Fake But Also Aroused
Oh yeah, it's big fake time. We're covering Nisemonogatari the second part of the Monogatari series and what is arguably one of the most interesting shifts in anime that we've ever seen. Where as Bakemonogatari was kinda pervy in way, Nisemonogatari just takes control of the wheel of the car and proudly declares that IT IS HORNY ON MAIN AND ALT AND EVERY ACCOUNT IN BETWEEN and drives us off the pier and into the cold depths of Lake Wannaseeaboobie. Araragi continues his encounters with the apparitions that affect the people around him and deals with the nature of being fake, being young, and being absolutely horny. So why should you watch Nisemonogatari? Because it's more Monogatari. You like Monogatari! Or at least you probably do if you're reading the description for this, yeah? You should go watch Bakemonogatari if you haven't though. Otherwise this description (and possibly episode) is kind of useless to you. These descriptions are kinda honestly useless though, right? I mean, you're probably just going to watch it based of the title and if it's about an anime that you want to listen to us talk about, you know? Makes me think... This is my kingdom of nothingness in these descriptions. I rule the world where no man treads and where no person will ever lay claim to my castle for no soul would ever dare to go where despair fears to take refuge. My empire is one cast in a metal of perpetual destitution and agony. Death would be a welcome reprise from us who dwell in the land of podcast descriptions. Anyways, listen to the episode and find out our thoughts and opinions and how much we liked this show after coming out of the masterful Bakemonogatari! And also people do be having nice lower backs though. ANIMISERY: Akikan!
Have you ever wished that you just didn't have to look in two places for a waifu and a delicious refreshing beverage? Maybe you wanted to satisfy your thirst for anime girls while you were actual sating your thirst? While you watch 2009's Akikan, you don't have to! It's just too bad you'll have to look for some actual quality while you enjoy your senpai soda or whatever.  Haha, I'm kidding though, right!? Yeah, it's Akikan! It's all about soda can magical girls fighting other soda can magical girls to determine if steel or aluminum is the superior metal for soft drinks cause that's something so important that the Japanese government couldn't just let be solved by an actual vote or something! It's got the mediocrity that will fix what ginger ails ya! It's got everything you could want in anime! We're looking at all kinds of waifus here: the main girl, the not main girl, the childhood friend, the lesbian, the woman who is actually legal, and the obligatory loli! You could not pick a better line-up! You got... fights? Yeah! Plenty of 'em! With lots of "quality" animation so reused that you can see the duct tape holding it together! You want humor? It's probably there! If you like terrible stereotypes and cats then you'll be rolling in the floor! You got... Please Mountain Dew not watch this show. It' s really actually sincerely bad. I would not Coca-Colie to you. I voted ramunay to watching this but here we are. I had to watch this show and now it feels like my actual interest in anime is fizzling out. The cold, refreshing, bubbly sensation of my weeaboo energy is gone. Soda puns! Please send actual help. This show has seriously broken me. I can't do these shows. Please. No more Animisery of actual bad shows. I don't even look for animation errors in anime but here we are. I found 'em. Thank you, Akikan. Season Two When!? The Shows We Want More Of (That We Probably Aren't Going to Get)
Some anime fans just have it better. They get season after season and they never have to worry about more content cause it's coming (looking at your My Hero fans). Some are less lucky and get another season and maybe a movie after but then everything is just quietly swept under the rug and forgotten. Some fans are even MEGA unlucky and get one season and that's it: too bad, so sad, be mad. We've been the last kind of fans too much and we're gonna talk about the anime we actually want more of! Listen in and find out what shows you and your part-timer devil need to watch the next time you visit your favorite high school host club and don't forget to leave us a 5 star (interspecies) review on Apple Podcasts! I was gonna put a lot more show based puns but Craig said you guys might not listen to the episode if I just gave away the entire list. Craig actually reads these too. It's kind of scary actually. A Very Sincere Actual Legitimate Review of Bakemonogatari
What do I say about Bakemonogatari that hasn't been said already? What kind of description can I possibly give that would compel you to legitimately listen to this episode if you weren't already going to watch it to begin with because we were talking Monogatari? I don't know how to get you in the door but here's the thing: this is an actual legitimate review and (kinda) not all about how much we love this show. I mean, do we love this show? I guess that's why you would need to listen, right? I'm asking a lot of questions here. I guess I could kind of say this: Bakemonogatari is kinda sorta like anime Danny Phantom. I think that's a fairly original statement. There's a lot of big wrinkly brain talk in this one where we discuss all about the nature of good anime and god-tier waifus, we get a little too real about our home lives, and YOU THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE ONE LAST STATEMENT ON ABOUT BIG BRAIN TALK IN THIS ANIME PODCAST BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY ME, LEO DIO! That's a reference from the episode. I'm not going insane or using old memes. Well, I'm definitely not insane but I'm certainly not mentally well but this is the end of the podcast description so it's not like you're reading my cry for help and understanding anyways! I can say whatever I want to! I HAVE UNLIMITED POWER DOWN HERE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TEXT! And Obi-Wan Kenobi thought that those who had the higher ground were more powerful? The fool! ANIMISERY: Yurikuma Arashi
You ever just read an anime's description and realize you're going to be watching one of those "I can't talk about with anyone unless they've seen it and understand that it's anime" anime? You know what gave it away for us? Alien lesbian bears. That's a big danger in Yurikuma Arashi (or Yuri Kumaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Arashi if you wanna be technical) and it's also a hazard for us who had to experience it. YKA is here to teach you never to give up on love but did we give up on it? You're gonna have to listen in and experience the LIFE SEXY, the LIFE COOL, and the LIFE BEAUTY romp that is Tsubaki Kureha and her adventures with the bears Ginko and Lulu as they realize what friendship really is or what it means to be ursine and gay or something. Honestly, I don't know. Like pick the themes you want! They're all right probably? I mean, I have some hair but I'm not a bear so maybe I'm just missing the point? Not that I'd tell you if I was a bear, growl growl! Or would I? Join the Discord at https://discord.gg/rUHYUyW to continue the conversation! Shabba-da-do!

Memories of Hama-con: An Interview with Hama's Director of Awesome, Basil of OSMcast
On July 19th 2019, congoers met for the last time at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL to enjoy their time at the tenth and final year at North Alabama premiere anime and gaming con, Hama-con. It had been an adventure to get to this point and many a tear were no doubt shed as friends and family parted knowing that they would never meet again in celebration of this convention. Hama-con touched many otaku and non-otaku alike and was a yearly ritual for so many including myself. It is in the spirit of Hama-con and the solidarity of anime fan alike who cannot meet in the hallowed halls of conventions due to the coronavirus that we present to you this interview with Hama-con's director of awesome, Basil, who so generously gave us his time and worked with the convention since its inception. If you're expecting the sort of antics of a traditional OtaMel episode then I'm super sorry but this is an actual interview and one that has a sincere meaning to me. I hope that you'll enjoy it regardless and truly appreciate the times you've had at conventions and look forward to the times that we will have in the future. I'll still be out here keeping the Hama-con spirit alive. We will all carry that weight.

Summer 2020 Season Impressions | You ever Deca-denced with the Demon King in the pale moon Lapis Re:Lights?
Better late than never, right? We're watched the first few episodes of a lot of shows of Summer 2020 and then we talked about them! Is Summer 2020 the kind of season that you should write home about? Maybe if your parents and you keep up correspondence about anime, I suppose. We're looking at a whole lot of the new hotness but we're also skimming over some of the more interesting and "unique" shows about horny tokusatsu teenagers and horny ogresses. I guess a lot of the shows this season are kind of about just being really really in the mood, huh? Or maybe that's just the entirety of anime in general? In this episode, we're talking about Deca-Dence, Super Hentai HxEROS, Rent-A-Girlfriend, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax, Gibiate, Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time, The God of High School, Monster Girl Doctor, Fire Force Season Two, Uzaki-Chan Wants to Hang Out, Lapis Re:LIGHTS, Re:Zero Season Two, and The Misfit of Demon King Academy. Japan Sinks 2020 | Get Sunk On, Netflix Subscribers
Okay okay okay. This time, we're actually talking about Netflix's Japan Sinks 2020.  Also this is all spoilers so I can't help you there and I'm sorry. Misaaki Yuasa is here to ruin and destroy his fictional version of Japan just like any good anime director feels compelled to. I mean, you have to at least take out Tokyo Tower or just a couple of districts in Tokyo or you're just not even trying if you're in the anime business. I don't even know what to say as far as a brief description of the show cause it's just about Japan sinking in the year 2020. That's just the title with more words. I'm useless to you as a description provider. We're here to talk about and give general banter and please don't think too harshly of us after this cause honestly I just don't know what we even talk about sometimes and it's just a little rude. It's like 3 in the morning and I'm trying to post this before I go to bed but I want to just get it out of the way before I forget and Craig gets mad at me. Be sure to watch Japan Sinks 2020 before EA Sports release Japan Sinks 2021 releases next year! Or Japan Sinks 2K21 if you're more into the 2K brand. It's a video game joke! Please applaud. Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Released in 1995 to critical acclaim, Ghost in the Shell remains a standout example of the cyberpunk genre and has stretched its influence out across not only the anime industry but the Hollywood film one as well. Such beloved example of cinema such as The Matrix and even Avatar have massive amounts of themes and storytelling that have been borrowed from director Mamoru Oshii amazing dive into cyberpunk. With like a hundred (somebody will have to fact check me on this) extra entries and spin offs after the original, Ghost in the Shell is still going strong 25 years later. Anyways, that's enough hype. I mean, I'm not trying to sell you on Ghost in the Shell cause you've probably already watched it if you're gonna listen in, right? This movie's like 25 years old. It can legally rent a car or get a mortgage. It could even run for a position on the city council if it wanted. I'd vote for Ghost in the Shell for my district instead of that piece of garbage who tied his campaign flyer to my door with an ACTUAL rubber band. It popped me in the hand when I tried to take if off and I'm still pretty pissed about it. Screw that guy! Anyways, Brad's running his own solocast so get actual hype on that and maybe get hyped on local politics too! Mostly just get hyped on this episode though. Devilman Crybaby
Because you (well, one of you) requested it, we're here to talk about the newest and hottest show by Science SARU! Directed by Misaaki Yuasa, we're talking about the Netflix original series Japan Sin- wait. What? We're not doing that? We're doing the other Yuasa Netflix anime? The one from two years ago??? How are we supposed to stay relevant when you request this kind of content??? Thank you TwiggyTheDragon for asking that we review this "hot" show, he said sarcastically (nah but seriously thank you so much for asking we love you big heart emoji). We're talking Devilman Crybaby in this episode and things get MASSIVE HUGE MEGA BRAIN and WE TALK ABOUT THEMES AND MOTIFS AND SMART STUFF. Yeah, you might just need to grab a big thesaurus for this one and also a deep cup of herbal tea because we get all kinds of philosophical on this episode. We also talk about how our taste is garbage so you know maybe just get a medium cup of herbal tea. Actually could you get me a cup too? I'm kind of thirsty. ANIMISERY: Manyuu Hikenchou
You know, maybe there is such a concept as too much of a good thing. Scratch that. There are definitely times when you can have way too much of a good thing and Manyuu Hikenchou is definitely out to prove it by giving us as Brad calls it "double Q sized anime tiddies". Enter the wild world of alternate time line Japan during the Edo period where EVERYONE is a boob guy and they all want their girls to have actual metal rods placed in their backs just to support themselves and having a breast reduction surgery is apparently the greatest dishonor a person can have. It's kind of like if someone watched a Kurasawa film and was just kind of super duper horny the entire time, you know? Well, hornier than normal when you see samurai fighting cause I mean I don't know about you but there's nothing sexier than a good top knot! Join us as we journey through this ANIMISERABLE show and attempt to be the "breast" in the land! Don't be a "boob" and miss out! Additional anime tiddy pun! Spring 2020 Season Review
I'm ethically required to tell you what shows we're covering because that's just how anime podcasting works, right? In this episode, we are discussing Gleipnir, Sing Yesterday for Me, Tsugu Tsugumomo, Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2,  Kakushi Goto, The 8th Son!? Are You Kidding Me!?, Tower of God, Listeners, Princess Connect: ReDive, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom, and Wave Listen to Me! Look at that! What a HEFTY episode! Les Misérables isn't as long as this! Spring 2020 was full of greatness, goodness, and garbage. What shows were the shows that mattered though? Well, none of them if you really think about the existential void of it all but I digress. Spring saw the triumphant return of the beloved cast of Kaguya-sama: Love is War as well as our first meeting with more characters we're surely going to learn to tolerate like the ones in My Next Life as a Villainess! We had some touching father daughter moments with Kakushi Goto and we shared a fantastic meal/saw some tiddies with our guild mates with Princess Connect: ReDive! So what was worth watching and worth dropping? Well, SPOILERS it's definitely Kaguya-sama. We're joined with our new seasonal correspondent Amelia from Otaku Host Club to talk about the majestic and the meh of this season so give her and the other awesome guys at the OHC some love like right now! Or maybe whenever it's at your earliest convenience! But right now would definitely be preferable! BNA: Brand New Animal | Back On Those Furry Shenanigans Again
Quick heads up: we've sectioned off our spoilers for your enjoyment! Here we go again. It's that time again. Netflix had to just go ahead and grab more of those sweet wolf boys. We're talking about more anthropomorphic animal anime with Trigger's BNA: Brand New Animal! I mean, I think we all knew that we were going to do this and we just had to make a full episode out of it because WHEW. There was just so much to digest and discuss as this anime truly manages to tackle the dynamic breakdowns and socioeconomic deconstruction that BNA endeavors eloquently address by- just kidding. It's cause it's furry and it's Trigger. It's like chocolate and peanut butter. Great when they're separate (?????) but even better when they're combined, right? Maybe! In this episode, find out all about the secret of the liger and the tigon, why you need to watch out for the rise of the baseball episode, and how to play the Otaku Melancholy Drinking Game if you aren't familiar with it already! OTAKU MINICHOLY: Tokyo Revengers
I think it's just a common part of otaku culture to just go to the bookstore and read through entire volumes of manga. There's a lot of manga out there though so which ones do you take spend your hard earned money and time on? We're here to see if you should just "peep" a manga or actually "keep" it in a no doubt short lived episode style that we're calling "Peep Or Keep?" Our first manga up is Tokyo Revengers which was recently announced to have an anime adaptation so we're jumping on that bandwagon and talking about it! We read the first volume and we're gonna tell you what we think about the makings of this manga. Should you take it to the counter or put it back? The answer is actually neither because this manga is digital only but I'm honestly just trying to fill up this description because I didn't get much sleep last night so I kind of have a big headache right now. In this episode, find out if Tokyo Revengers is just delinquent Erased, where the delinquent stadium is located in Tokyo, and why Mikey is an amazing character in manga. ORA! A Whisker Away | I Wanna Cry, I Wear A Cat
Never trust any mask salesman especially if they're a big T H I C C kitty. That's the lesson you can take away from Netflix's new anime movie: A Whisker Away. It's all about teenage emotions, messy home lives, and being a freaking adorable cat. That sounds like a very winning combination for any project but is it actually good or just another piece of fluff in the ever expanding Netflix library? Listen to find the very debatable answer! Also tune in to find out what happens when you combine Makoto Shinkai with Hayao Miyazaki, why you should maybe take your own cat out of the room when you record your anime podcast, and how to many cat puns we can meowster before you find reasonable claws to leave! We're not kitten here; these jokes are purrfect! Listen, I'm sorry. You talk about cats and you have to put in these crappy puns. I am CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO PUT THESE HERE. HELP ME. Be kind and rewind back with us to a time when anime wasn't streaming and there were far fewer conventions teeming with merch. It's part of a series called OTAKUMENTARY where we discuss our collective otakulture and reflect on it all! In this episode, find out why Fushigi Yugi was effectively brought (legally) to the west, how to kind of sort of do you own VHS fansubs, and all about the mystery of Hot Ramen Video and Miami Mike! We're gonna try not to have too many Kon-treversial opinions but we won't Kon-demn you if you disagree. Kon-sidering all the facts, you should probably watch the movie first. I mean, you should have a little bit of time left in your Kon-rantine, right? Animisery: Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (2020)
The Winter 2020 season was filled with highs and lows and we're talking about one of the lowest in this Animisery episode. Sorcerous Stabber Orphen is a remake of the classic Orphen anime that only serves to remind us to let anime corpses stay in the dirt (even if you have a Philosopher's Stone). The Kimluck Church doesn't believe in a god that can fix this show and the Tower of Fangs doesn't have a sorcerer yet who can remedy it yet either so, naturally, we're going to talk about it. In this episode, find out about the kind of magic spell you can't dodge, why you really need to shorten your incantations if you're going to be a sorcerer, and witness a pissed weeaboo's brief moment of ramune fueled rage at an anime. Beastars
Let's just get it out of the way. Yeah, we talk a little bit about furries in this episode. I mean, Beastars is about anthropomorphic animals so it comes up, right? That said, these good boys and girls are super cute but if Louis wanted to take me out to the school shed then I would only lightly protest. I'm not a furry though. I just think deer are really cute. In this episode, find out when we expect Deer Town USA to open, what kind of anime CG is good CG, and why Haru is kind of weird to look at. I really do just kind of want to rub Legoshi's belly though. What do you mean that good boy can rip my throat out? Ah, high school. It's all about the doki-doki escapades of Makoto Itou and his harem of girls that casually morphs into a creep show of underage debauchery and murder. The Vision of Escaflowne
Peanut butter and jelly. Knives and forks. Anime panties and a conveniently placed camera. These are all classic combos. Now what about the unfamiliar ones? What about something new? What about an isekei mixed with mecha that's also a shoujo that's also a fantasy that's also a romance? Studio Sunrise in 1996 decided to just combine everything in their anime blender and out came The Vision of Escaflowne. So how is it? Is it a great combo like chocolate and peanut butter or is it questionable one like pickles and ice cream cream? We're gonna talk about in this episode, of course! PatLabor Collection / Ō-sama Weiss-kun!? Episode 0
You might think that mecha shows are only about fighting and destroying and epic warfare and heavy political intrigue but PatLabor would dare to prove you wrong. PatLabor is a classic anime franchise about the men and women who use their mechs to solve weirdly philosophical based crime and look really confusing doing it! Is it good though? Your OtaMel hosts are here to get those answers for you. In this episode, find out all about mech based crime, why you should definitely be an adult to watch PatLabor, and how NOT to watch a franchise. When they're done talking about PatLabor, stay tuned for our special A.I. Dungeon playthrough where Matt guides Brad through an anime parody all about the origins of the Great King Weiss. I forgot that RWBY existed completely when I used that name. Swear on me mum.

March Mecha Madness continues! The hosts are talking about arguably the best entry in the Gundam franchise with Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. It is serious real anime discussion time about the nature of war, the loss of innocence, and how giant robots play a part in that. In this episode, find out what it's like to meet famous people as a kid, how much sadness one anime can bring, and why it's important to write your little kid characters as somewhat annoying. I'm just going to warn you that the jokes are very small in the episode in particular so just listen along with a laugh track playing or something. Browse memes while you listen. You ever see something that just made you want to hug it and protect it from all the impure evils and heinous sins of this world? Well, that thing was probably moe and there's probably nothing (in anime) more moe than 2007's slice of life classic Lucky Star. Following the lives of otaku Konata and her assemble of friends, Lucky Star is the kind of cute that makes a grown man cry manly tears in marvel of the moe madness. In this episode, Brad and Matt discuss the meaning of moe, why it hurts when your slice of life ends, and just generally fight over who best girl is (spoilers: it's Gyopi-chan) like always. With the recent controversy of Funimation removing the too-ecchi-not-to-be-hentai series Interspecies Reviewers, the hosts of Otaku Melancholy decided to take a critical look at anime streaming services and piracy. In this episode, we joined up with our friend Lucas (artist and creator of the Webtoon F*cking Magical who also did the awesome art for our pod) to talk about all things streaming including the good(?) ol' days of watching anime on YouTube, the censorship of hentai, and why these mooches won't get off of Matt's VRV account.

Well, Brad and Matt are the absolute GOODEST (I KNOW that's not a word spell check, jeez) of friends and they're sharing their garbage taste with one another. Enter these two shows with whiny protagonists that our hosts just can't stand. Matt hates Neo Yokio and Brad kind of sort of dislikes Umaru-chan. Find out how Brad became slightly nauseated watching Umaru-chan, why Neo Yokio really needs to install some sort of anti-aircraft defense system, and just how much complaining one little weeb can make about Studio Deen.
