Our Cinematic Universe

By Our Cinematic Universe

In an age of box-office busting behemoths and infinite franchise foreshadowing, it can be refreshing to look back on what started them all.

This series, hosted by Byron Wylder and Gabriel Medina Blackman charts the franchises that define our cinematic landscape, and searches for answers to the questions: Why has this lasted? Why do they keep making them? And why do we keep on going to see them?

We've done franchises such as Star Wars, the Terminator, and even classics like The Godfather triology.

Shazam - WW2020

Shazam - WW2020

SHAZAM! the next Good movie in the franchise.

The closest that DC has ever gotten to making a marvel style movie, which makes it pretty good. But better than aquaman?

Only Birds of prey is left, and then we'll move on to our next franchise.

Gremlins and Gremlins 2 - OCU Recommendations

The Gremlins franchise comes from writer Chris Columbus and Director Joe Dante.

This is one of Gabe's favourite franchises, but it's Byron's first time watching them. How does he like the puppet mayhem of Gremlins and it's sequel?

We'll continue our DC franchise next!

Wonder Woman 84 - WW2020

Wonder Woman 84 - WW2020

Wonder Woman 1984 is here, in theatres and in HBO Max.

It's been a long journey to the 80's, we've been through a rough ride, but how does Patty Jenkin's latest fair against the rest of the franchise?

Justice League - WW2020

Justice League - WW2020

The Justice League is Zack Snyder's last directed film in the franchise, but it was also directed by Joss Whedon.

This is the ultimate DCEU Assemble movie, and funnily enough, it's problems are similar to every other film in the franchise.

But the road won't be dark for long, upcoming are a couple of good movies.

Wonder Woman - WW2020

Wonder Woman - WW2020

And we arrive to our first good movie in the franchise, Patty Jenkin's Wonder Woman.

The first solo hero film since Man of Steel. Wonder Woman has to go into World War I to try and stop the evil within men. This movie was proclaimed as DC's best in the franchise at the time, with some people saying that it surpassed many Marvel movies, does it?

But soon, we go back to another dark instalment of the franchise.

Suicide Squad - WW2020

Suicide Squad - WW2020

David Ayer's Suicide Squad is the next entry of this franchise.

Suicide Squad unites a bunch of Batman villains into a plot to stop meta-humans. But, as it's common in this franchise, things behind the scenes did not go smoothly. This movie is infamous on how the edit was completely changed from the directors original vision, and it shows.

After this is an actual good movie, see you then.

Magnolia - Our Cinematic Universe Recommendations

Byron's first recommendation is the Paul Thomas Anderson anthology film Magnolia, the movie with possibly the best cast of all time. It's Gabe's first watch, so enjoy his first impressions!

In this new series, each of us are going to show one of our favourites movies to the other. Normally it will be movies that the other has never seen.

Batman v Superman - WW2020

Batman v Superman - WW2020

Zack Snyder's next entry in Wonder Woman 2020 is the 2016 film Batman v Superman, the first DC assemble film.

Sadly Wonder Woman 1984 has been delayed, but we'll continue forward to finish this franchise before moving on.

This might be a controversial opinion, but we enjoyed this more than Man of Steel, but not by much.

Next will be the first non-Snyder directed entry, David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

We found ourselves astonished by this entry, but not the way you think.

This is a long road to Wonder Woman 1984, which we are very excited for.

Next will be Batman v Superman.

Insomnia - Ten to Tenet

Insomnia is Nolan's first studio film and it's also his only film where he has no writing credit. This film also represents the firdt time he worked with an Oscar winner, but it's actually 3 of them, Al Pacino, Hilary Swank and the great Robin Williams.

Tenet is in the horizon, and it's getting closer.

Batman Begins - Ten to Tenet

Batman Begins - Ten to Tenet

Batman Begins is the start of the Dark Knight franchise, and it's one of Byron's favourites, but Gabe in the other hand feels conflicted. This is the biggest clash in our cinematic Universe since Rogue One!

Nolan's first Batman symbolizes the beginning of an era where Hollywood started rebooting characters and IP's into grittier world. But how does Batman Begins accomplishes this? is it successful? We'll discuss this as many  other things.

Getting close to tenet!

The Prestige - Ten to Tenet

The Prestige - Ten to Tenet

What do you get when you combine Spielberg's masterful directing and Shyamalan's twists into one movie? You get the highly acclaimed The Prestige. Christopher Nolan's Magician movie was the third magician movie to come out on 2006, but it was he most memorable.

But why does this movie's twists works compared to anything that M. Night has made since Unbreakable?

Even thought this is Nolan's 5th film, it might be one of hid finest!

We getting closer to Tenet, and we can't wait to talk about it.

The Dark Knight - Ten to Tenet

The Dark Knight - Ten to Tenet

It's one of the most acclaimed blockbusters ever made. It was the first superhero movie to reach 1 billion dollars. It cemented Christopher Nolan as the most influential director in Hollywood, and it gave Heath Ledger a legendary showcase of his immense talent which became all the more haunting after his untimely death before the release of the movie... there is no other movie with quite as much baggage as The Dark Knight.

It's been twelve years and both Byron and Gabe have very high opinions, but also questions and observations about the craft and legacy of this movie. Hear us dispell some of the urban myths about Ledger and the filming of certain scenes, let us make you laugh with dumb impressions of Michael Caine and Batman, and we hope you'll enjoy some observations about how this may well be the last great American blockbuster that was allowed to take risks.

Please enjoy! We hope you're all safe

Inception - Ten to Tenet

Inception - Ten to Tenet

Welcome to the next part of Our Cinematic Universe's new mini-series on the films of Christopher Nolan. In anticipation of the release of his eleventh film Tenet, we are going through every piece of his filmography.

But it wouldn't be a Chris Nolan series without some time-bending  nonsense, so we're going.... backwards through his filmography. This week we talk about Inception, his most emotional journey.

As this is the closest to what Tenet will be, we've spend a good amount of time talking about it's premise, characters, effects and of course, many different movie's soundtracks, like Lion King and The social Network.

But it wouldn't be a Chris Nolan series without some time-bending nonsense, so we're going.... backwards through his filmography, even the Dark Knight trilogy!

The Dark Knight Rises is the follow up the one of the highest acclaimed blockbuster films of all time, how good of a job does it do? We discuss the story, which concludes a trilogy worth of set ups as well as the special effects, which competes against  the Inception hallway and the Dark Knights hospital.

Tenet is at the horizon by now.

Interstellar - Ten to Tenet

Interstellar - Ten to Tenet

Welcome to the second part of Our Cinematic Universe's new mini-series on the films of Christopher Nolan. In anticipation of the release of his eleventh film Tenet, we are going through every piece of his filmography.

But it wouldn't be a Chris Nolan series without some time-bending nonsense, so we're going.... backwards through his filmography! This week we are discussing his murph divisive film. Full of interesting afflecks of his creative style, we debate wether his non-linear storytelling can really chastain an entire 2 hour 40 minute movie.

Will we feel cooped up in quarantine watching Interstellar or will we lithgow gently into that good night...

Enjoy!

Our Cinematic Universe has a new objective: to analyse the Terminator Timeline. How a relatively simple story changed into one of the most convoluted franchises.

Here we are at the end... or the beginning? As Skydance acquires the rights, there is hope for a new creativity to come into the franchise... the only question is, did they pull it of.... NO! Of course they didn't, you've seen it (or haven't), you know it's bad. But just how bad is it....?
