From Vintage Threads to Sustainable Futures with creative collaborator, Tee Gray

From Vintage Threads to Sustainable Futures with creative collaborator, Tee Gray

Have you ever pondered the threads that stitch together the story of our lives with the clothes we wear?

Tee Gray, whose roots in Leeds’s historic fashion industry, blossomed amidst the vibrant fashion and clubbing scene of 80's London, takes us on an eclectic journey.

As we traverse the city's evolving music and fashion landscape, Tee's transformation from psychiatric nursing to a creative life in fashion embodies the synergy of personal growth and sartorial expression.

Tee shares candid stories of overcoming setbacks and celebrates the pro-aging movement's spotlight at London Fashion Week to an opportunity to shoot with Rankin.

Fashion's fleeting trends often overshadow the pressing need for sustainability and ethical production; this episode challenges the status quo.

Tee's insights spotlight the resurgence of garment altering and ethical consumption, particularly among millennials. Tee shares her own love of collecting preloved jewellery and iconic fashion pieces that she not only incorporates in to her own wardrobe but also sells in her TrueStreetCurator  collection, available at the Red House in York.

This episode is a patchwork of perspectives, experiences, and revelations that promise to leave you inspired to create a wardrobe that tells your unique story, one that's responsibly chic and timelessly fashionable.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Tee in the newly launched Trad Collective store in the heart of Leeds, which was the perfect place to discuss our love for pre-loved and reworked sustainable fashion. I came away with an amazing reworked vintage denim jacket with a fabulous Frida Kahlo print on the back. It’s definitely worth a visit!

I left our conversation feeling not only inspired but even more determined to fight against ageism in the fashion industry because it’s women’s voices like Tee’s that need to be part of the fashion forward conversation. Older women have lived experiences and wisdom to share that the next generation can learn so much from.

Creativity and Connection in the Chorus of Life with singer and coach Sophie Garner

Creativity and Connection in the Chorus of Life with singer and coach Sophie Garner

Ever wondered how a melody can lift spirits or a chorus can heal hearts?

Join us as I welcome back the remarkable Sophie Garner, whose voice and vision are transforming lives through the power of singing. Sophie first joined the podcast in 2020 (Ep.57) and has been on a non-stop mission since we last spoke.

Sophie shares her journey since 2020, from empowering corporate executives with song to facilitating workshops that champion emotional healing. Her work with a diverse array of groups, including those navigating the aftermath of brain injuries and teenagers confronting trauma, is nothing short of transformative. Prepare to be inspired by Sophie's stories of levelling the playing field with a melody and the profound impact that music and singing can have on personal growth.

We chat about the magic that happens when we sing—how the release of endorphins and serotonin can alleviate pain and create a sense of connection that's as palpable as the harmonies in a choir. We tackle the myth of 'tone-deafness' and share uplifting stories of individuals who've found their voice beyond the shadows of childhood singing snags. I witnessed the power of Sophie’s community choir workshops at last year’s Womanifest, where she brought together a group of strangers and within an hour had created a harmonious choir that performed live that day, it was magical to watch.

Sophie is also on a mission to unlock people’s creativity with her new book "Reawakening the Creative Playmaker," which will be out this month and I am very proud to have contributed , sharing my own reconnection with creativity later in life.

I am so excited about our upcoming workshop , Sophie and I invite you to join us, on Saturday 20th April, In Leeds for an event that's more than just a choir session—it's a gathering of empowerment, creativity, and community.

The day is going to be an incredible experience of empowerment through singing and creative self expression and  built body confidence. Sophie is a professional  singer and the UKs Choir to Confidence coach,  through her expert knowledge, she will support and guide you, connecting you to your own unique voice and power, unleashing your creativity. We will learn three songs and perform them live on social media at the end of the day. It's going to be magical.

You can find out more here- https://www.tickettailor.com/events/sophiegarner/1184339

Breaking Cultural Silence on Menopause, Education and Identity with Freda Shafi

Breaking Cultural Silence on Menopause, Education and Identity with Freda Shafi

Step into a world where art meets activism as we chat with Freda Shafi, the extraordinary British South Asian artist, food writer, vlogger, and newly published author of 'Suitorland'.

She shares her journey of personal evolution, standing tall against the winds of challenge and societal norms. Her novel pulls back the curtain on the lives of South Asian women growing up in West Yorkshire during the 70s, weaving a rich tapestry of community, culture, and the enduring influence of patriarchal systems. Freda's honesty and vulnerability shine as we discuss the mixed emotions that accompany creative expression and advocacy, showcasing the resilience embedded in giving voice to those often silenced.

Navigating the tides of change, we delve into the pressing topic of menopause awareness, spotlighting the complexities faced by women in different communities. Freda opens up about her own path to understanding this pivotal phase and the responsibility she now feels to illuminate this often-misunderstood experience. We dissect the critical role oestrogen plays in women's well-being and the empowering act of making informed choices regarding menopause treatment. The conversation extends to the significance of representation, celebrating the voices of ethnic minority clinicians who bring diversity and strength to the narrative of women's health.

If you don’t already follow Freda on instagram then I recommend you start now @fredashafi_spiceitup, her passion for food is a visual treat and leaves you wanting to recreate her recipes as she inspires us to cook from scratch and eat a healthy balanced diet.

A delightful fusion of food, art, and sensory experiences emerges as we explore how my fine art background intertwines with a passion for culinary creation.

We round off by embracing the audacity to live authentically, and the courage to transcend boundaries. Join us for this enriching journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and the pursuit of unshackled freedom.

Freda's candid conversation offers an inspirational look at how questioning the world around us can lead to profound strength and representation for those often left unheard.

Freda leaves us with an uplifting, inspirational message:

“To be free is to be ourselves without constraints.”

About Freda Shafi

Graduating with two degrees in Fine art, Freda Shafi has had a successful career in the creative sector, from being a lecturer, creative producer and for over twenty-five years she has worked with underrepresented and disenfranchised communities, helping to engage and raise their voices in mainstream cultural venues from theatre, opera north and art galleries. She still works with women from ethnic minority communities, because, as Freda says,

"I feel I can meaningfully support them, as they still face some of the barriers and glass ceilings, that my own generation broke through." In addition to being a published author, Freda is a writer and food columnist for Yorkshire Business Woman and several other publications. Freda has a second book deal and another offshoot to the novel - it's been optioned for TV! So please stay tuned!

Exploring Midlife Romance: Navigating Love, Menopause, and Online Dating with UK's Relationship expert Kate Taylor

Valentine's Day often arrives with a mixed bag of emotions, doesn't it?

Some revel in the celebration of love, while others feel the sting of societal expectations. What better time to invite one of the UK's leading relationship experts, Kate Taylor, to talk about midlife dating, love, sex and relationships later in life.

I had the pleasure of working with Kate back in 2022 whilst working for Our Time, the online dating for over 50's. A nationwide study, carried out by Our Time, found that far from dwindling over time, more than half of over-50s (53%) claimed they feel friskier and sexier now than ever before. You can imagine Kate and I had a lot to talk about on the radio that day!

The research by over 50s dating service Our Time also found a quarter of over 50s said their relationship and sex life became more exciting after hitting a half century.

Kate's work includes writing for the  The SunReaders Digest, GQ, The Daily Mail, you may have even heard Alexa telling you some of Kate's dating tips. Kate is also an author of five books and the Our Time's dating expert.

Kate discusses the surging divorce rates among the 40 to 49 demographics, offering solace and wisdom for those questioning their romantic paths. Both Kate and I found love online, on Match.com, in our forties, and we share our personal experiences and victories, proving that new beginnings can be just a click away.

Navigating the dating scene during menopause can seem overwhelming. Kate’s excellent advice guides you through the intricacies of online dating expectations and how to plan for a comfortable first encounter.

Kate discusses how dating later in life can be a transformative experience, urging you to explore new possibilities of romance.

It's not just about new relationships either. Kate offers some excellent advice on how to rekindle a dwindling long term relationship and why she believes sex is such an important part of that.

Ep.136 It's time to lift the stigma around Lichen Sclerosus and Vulva Cancer with Kay Binnersley

Ep.136 It's time to lift the stigma around Lichen Sclerosus and Vulva Cancer with Kay Binnersley

Kay Binnersley is an award winning hairdresser and bridal hairstylist who has been in the industry for over 37 years. Working for herself from the age of 18, first as a freelancer then the last 26 years in her own salon.

But Kay isn't here to talk about hair, she's here to help lift the stigma around open up the conversation around Lichen Sclerosus and Vulva cancer.

If you're sat there thinking you've never heard of Lichen Sclerosus, neither had Kay until she was diagnosed with the condition recently. She is now on a mission to help educate other women especially as it's a subject no one wants to talk about. Conversations around breast cancer are now positively shared, Deborah James did an amazing job at lifting the taboo around bowel cancer yet mention the 'Vulva' word and we still find it uncomfortable.

So what is Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus is a long-term (chronic) skin condition. It causes the skin to become thin, white, and wrinkly. Lichen sclerosus may occur in men, women, and children at any age. But it is most common in women older than age 50, which is even more reason for us to be talking about it!

The symptoms of vulval LS vary from person to person. Sometimes, it causes no symptoms and is discovered during tests for other health problems.

The affected area of the vulva may:

  • be very itchy and sore, which may be worse at night
  • change colour, becoming pale or white
  • develop small areas of bruising that look like blood blisters
  • be more fragile than normal skin and possibly split

The causes of vulval LS are not known. It is not possible to get LS through sexual contact. It is not a sexually transmitted disease and is not infectious. LS is also not caused by hormonal problems or an allergic reaction.

Women over 50 are often struggling with other issues like cystitis, vaginal dryness and thrush which can all masque these symptoms and as not enough is known about the condition it can often be left undiagnosed. If left there is a chance it can lead to vulva cancer so it's so important we are made aware of these symptoms. Knowledge is power!

Topics covered-

  • Who is Kay Binnersley?
  • Passion for hair
  • First symptoms- diagnosis
  • Dealing with pain
  • The impact it had on Kay's confidence and daily life
  • Knowledge is power
  • Statistics (1 in 100 women will be diagnosed with it and 5 in 100 will turn cancerous)
  • Why do we find it so difficult to call our vulva by it's real name?
  • How can we lift the stigma around this
  • The petition to gain funding for research for a cure and support for those diagnosed.
  • Why Kay is using her voice to create awareness around this condition
  • Don't put off going to the doctors if you are worried about any symptoms
  • Kays positive attitude to life

There is currently no cure, no remission, for Lichen Sclerosus only strong steroid ointments which put condition into remission at best. There is some evidence to suggest it may be an auto immune disorder and whilst it can affect men , it is mainly seen in women. Sufferers can live in pain and be affected physically and mentally, but it can be misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and can increase the risk of certain cancers.

Sign the petition

There is currently no funding available for research to find a cure , support patients and help raise awareness. If you'd like to sign the petition to get this conversation on the table here's the link, your support is much appreciated.

Ep.134' Self compassion is Key' with award winning mental health activist Miranda Arieh

Ep.134' Self compassion is Key' with award winning mental health activist Miranda Arieh

I first met this week’s guest , Miranda Arieh as we both stood nervously outside BBC Radio Leeds station before we entered another round of the BBC Leeds radio “New Voices” presenter competition. I managed to make it to the final 5 but they were only taking 2 presenters, so it wasn’t meant to be. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the world of radio and presenting and whilst some may have seen it as a failure, I saw it as a great opportunity and as this is my 134th podcast interview I think it turned out ok. Miranda is now regularly heard on Radio Leeds sharing her work around mental health and I have loved following her ever since.*take a look at some of Miranda’s extensive media/radio coverage

Miranda Arieh is an award-winning mental health activist, public speaker and spiritual coach from Leeds, UK.

Following a lengthy stay in an adolescent psychiatric unit at 14 years old, Miranda learned first-hand, how cold the medical model of mental health treatment can be and set out to learn a better way to alleviate my suffering. She went on course after course, ate up books of spiritual teachers, and decided to dedicate her life to transforming my attitudes, trigger reactions and life-long patterns. Sure enough, she started to recognize that all the triggers she felt were an opportunity for spiritual growth and began to enjoy the process of learning. Of getting to know herself, befriend herself, hold herself…

Miranda felt let down by a mental health system where many patients were set up to fail. A system that is not recovery-focused; a system that puts ‘managing symptoms’ above healing. An in-built culture of ‘survive’ not ‘thrive’, awash with a river of stigma flooding through the system. So, she decided to go look from the inside.

After over a decade of finding her feet and securing roles at some of the leading mental health charities, including Mind, Community Links and Time To Change, Miranda started to be invited to share her story up and down the country at mental health conferences, awareness-raising events, on the radio and television.

Now, working as Network Mental Health Lead for the NHS BHR Primary Care Network in her hometown of Leeds, Miranda founded The HEROES (Healing, Education and Recovery of Emotional Strength) Groupwork Programme. This is an 8 week/20-hour educational therapeutic treatment programme that she has designed from scratch for patients from some of the most deprived areas in Leeds to join.  Looking to expand this service throughout the NHS in 2023 and create a movement, not just a treatment.

The foundation of all the work that Miranda does has self-compassion at the core as a ‘bridge’ to practising presence and being able to live in the present moment. Practising presence is the essence of inner peace. You may even start to realise that the present moment is, in fact, all that really exists…

‘The most important relationship you will ever have in your life is the one you have with yourself’.

Subjects covered-

·      BBC Radio Leeds ‘New Voices’ competition connection

·      Mirandas experience of the mental health service

·      Living in your comfort zone

·      Self-care and therapy

·      Self-compassion isn’t selfish.

·      What does self-compassion really mean?- the bigger picture.

·      Working with the NHS  and implementing the HEROES programme

·      Stepping out and facing your fears

·      It’s more than ok to fail!

Ep.133 Don’t Fear the Queer with Beyond the Binary founder Alex Jay Lynam

Ep.133 Don’t Fear the Queer with Beyond the Binary founder Alex Jay Lynam

I first heard Alex Jay Lynam speak at Dani Wallace’s Bee Inspired event in March and I was so struck by their Don’t Fear the Queer talk which left a powerful impression on me. Since then I started to question myself and the work I do on my podcast. Was I really showing up and creating a fully inclusive space for women on my platform, and if not why?

Looking over the 130 guests I’ve invited on the show so far, I don’t think I’ve ever had an open conversation with someone from the gay or queer community. I’m holding myself accountable as I think I’ve been avoiding the topic for fear of getting things wrong, not wanting to offend people, saying the wrong thing, and upsetting somebody. Listening to Alex made me realise that we all have an opportunity in whatever work we’re doing to include and show our support for people from the LGBTQ community.

From the age of 5 Alex had a love of musical theatre and they had the opportunity of working with a range of celebrities in theatre and TV.  From the age of 10 they were determined to be in the West End, you would even have watched them on Coronation Street. By the time they were 12 Alex begun questioning their identity and sexuality and when auditioning for Masculine roles and being knocked back, the question came up, ‘Am I a boy or girl.’

Alex came out in high school as a cis female lesbian, a decision they thought would ease the uncertainty of how they felt about their body, but it got worse as they were then bullied in high school and also into college.  Not fitting the ‘stereotype’ of a musical theatre female, feeling isolated and shamed, Alex dropped out of college.

The following years saw Alex hit the party life in Manchester hard, into alcohol and substance misuse.  Their mental health declined further, falling into abusive and toxic relationships.  Alex felt there was no light at the end of the tunnel, with little support and guidance around the questions of gender and self-discovery, they felt alone.

Hearing their story really hit home just how important our role is in showing up and  supporting anyone we know that may be coming out. It’s easy to assume once they’ve taken that brave step then the weight drops off their shoulders, but if there isn’t that open acceptance from society how do they feel valued?  Alex’s life was spiralling out of control and at the age of 22 they were arrested; they were given the option to change their path or go to prison. Thankfully Alex chose the latter and completed a journey of rehabilitation, learning how to find and build their self-love.  They finally got to place when they could embrace their true self and came out as non-binary.

Alex has used their life experience along with their previous work with young people and vulnerable adults in all different settings, to create Beyond the Binary. With a passion to help schools, companies, families, and individuals around LGBTQIA+ inclusion through training, consultancy, and public speaking, so that everyone can be seen and heard unapologetically as themselves.

We all have a responsibility to make sure no one is left out of the active inclusion conversation. Alex reminds us that it’s ok to get things wrong, use the experience to learn and have honest and open conversations.

What does Free to Be mean to Alex? “Free to be means for me to be my whole self and be my whole self in the spaces that I take up and being able to be safe in the spaces that I am. Being able to be visibly queer and not have to worry that I’m going to be hit with discrimination or abuse”.

Whilst it’s great that June is Pride month this should not just be a token gesture so I’m making a commitment today to make sure I include and seek out more midlife stories from those in the LGBTQ community who want to share their stories.

EP.132. The 9 to 5 Menopause with Fay Reid

EP.132. The 9 to 5 Menopause with Fay Reid

I first met Fay when we were both shooting with Refinery29 for an Avon campaign and I adore her energy and attitude to life.

Fay Reid is the founder of 9 to 5 Menopause - which she set up on Instagram after starting the menopause and finding there were no women she could relate to, when researching her symptoms. Fay launched 9to5menopause on social media, initially just to share tips and present menopause in a more realistic light (not old, white, and grey haired as usually depicted online).

When Fay started going through the menopause there was a lack of information –

“I started having symptoms at the age of 46 but the people who were talking about menopause were White, affluent women who didn’t have a job. They recommended private clinics, nutritionists, and yoga. That is not my life, I’ve got a job to go to. So, I started 9 to 5 Menopause, because there were no women in the workplace talking about menopause. I wanted to champion the average woman who’s got to run for a train in the morning and has to sit through a meeting having hot flushes"

Fay’s aim is to highlight and inform women of all ages and ethnicities that the menopause is nothing to fear and to share her tips for navigating this transition in a woman's life.

I’ve been a big fan of the work Fay is doing and I’m also inspired be her new found love of weight training, which she shares on her instagram account. Gyms and exercise classes can often feel a bit intimidating as an older woman, but Fay has really embraced the challenge and her progress is amazing. Another example that it’s never too late to try a new sport or activity!

Ep.131 The story of Sparrowlegs with author and body image educator Anupa Roper.

Ep.131 The story of Sparrowlegs with author and body image educator Anupa Roper.

I spend a lot of time talking about the impact of low body confidence in women over 40 but what about the younger generation? How can we help support them and enable them to grow up without all the body image issues that our generation were handed down?  Do you worry about your child’s body image?  Do you struggle to support them with their body image? Anupa Roper, a.k.a Sparrowlegs is a mum of two and in the last three years has transitioned from primary school teacher to children’s author and body image educator. Anupa allowed her label of ‘skinny’ to affect her choices and her feelings of worth for a long time. Now she wants to empower the next generations by helping them to feel happy in their own skin.  I asked Anupa how she would describe herself in 3 words and why? Kind - I would consider myself as a kind person, always putting others first and considering how my actions would make them feel. I like to think this is because it’s a reflection of what I would wish others to be too  Talkative! My school reports always cited me as chatty, and I have to say that true - I love a natter. I’m super interested in what others have to say so I’m a good listener too  Just me - I’m a mixture of so many things that make me me. The work that I do involves me helping others to see that being ourselves, being unique, is okay because we are all great just the way that we are.  I had such an interesting talk with Anupa, and we so often hear body confidence conversations from the plus-size community, so it was refreshing to hear Anupa’s perspective as a slimmer woman.  Anupa really does know how it feels to be uncomfortable in your own body. After spending years hating her ‘skinny’ legs and ‘skinny’ arms. She spent years being told how small she was and being questioned about whether she ate enough! Anupa has walked the path of being defined by her size and appearance and understands how to work towards having a better body image. She is passionate in wanting to support the next generations to do this too. My nickname at primary school was speck four eyes as I wore thick glasses and I hated them. I'm sure you can relate to how cruel young children can be to each other when it comes ot name calling. Anupa was called "Sparrowlegs" and has now now learnt to embrace her body and is owning the name.  Sparrowlegs is a beautifully illustrated book for under 7’s about a sparrow who learns to love the feathers she is in. Sparrow embraces her amazing body and thinks that you should too! Women like Anupa are creating a positive ripple effect for future generation, and we all have a part to play. Being mindful of the language we use around our children, young adults and grandchildren can make a big difference to their mental wellbeing and how they grow feeling about their bodies. What does "Free to Be" mean to Anupa? "Free to Be happy in our own skin is how I would interpret that, both on the outside and inside too. We just need to learn to be comfortable with who we are and not feel the pressure to be anyone else." What does 'Free to Be' mean to you? JoJo is the founder of CreativSas, along with being a best selling author, motivational speaker, radio show and podcast host. Jojo Smith empowers and elevates her clients in crowning their courage, confidence, and self-belief to show that they have the power to grant their own wishes into reality. You only need to spend a few moments in JoJo's presence to pick up on her boundless enjoy and positivity but spend a couple of hours with her and you'll also realise JoJo has a wealth of business expertise and she means serious business.

JoJo has enjoyed fabulous careers in catering and retail but her dream was always to do something for herself and to run her own business. A pivotal moment brought JoJo to face herself head on and heal some wounds, focusing on what she wanted and the change she wanted to make on the world. Thats when the reels magic started to happen and she's been creating magic ever since.

"At a younger age, I subdued my sparkle, wanting to fit in with everyone else from childhood to early adulthood. But I soon discovered there’s nothing quite as rewarding as being unapologetically yourself and letting everyone else know it too. Now I help you find the magic in your own brand,  holding your hand along the way until you're ready to let go and have your own adventure."

Ep.126.Are you ready for some midlife Rants & Big Pants? aka Neens & dB

Welcome back to a brand new series of Liberté- Free to Be , new name, new look and I've even got my own music too

What better way to kick things off than inviting the dynamic duo Rants and Big Pants, aka Neens and dB on the show.

These ladies are not only doing a great job at keepings things Realtor their midlife community but they are bundles of fun too so I knew we would have an interesting conversation. I wasn't disappointed!

Meet Neens and dB-

Big Pants’ Neens…A veteran of the singing and entertainment circuit with ‘SHOWBIZ’ running through her in big glittery letters with a personality to match,

She is passionate about bringing awareness and offering help/support and advice on Alzheimer’s after looking after her late, beloved Dad as he battled this terrible disease.  Neens also loves all things beauty and after nearly 20 years working in cosmetics, is always happy to share her knowledge.  Everything about our Neens sparkles from her love of disco to her warm/funny personality.  Neens isn't afraid to step outside her comfort zone and practices what she preaches.

‘Rants’ dB is the writer and wannabe cowgirl.  Give this girl jeans, trainers (or cowboy boots) and anything leopard print and watch her go.

Known by all as dB (yes, that’s a small d and a capital B). She loves recommending films/tv or just having a rant because yep, she’s the Rants to Neens’ Big Pants and honestly when she’s on one she just gets louder and louder.  dB is overcoming her own imposter syndrome as she proudly publishes her first novel this month. At heart she’s still just a girl who tucks her vest into her knickers.

They may seem like chalk and cheese but their shared values bond them together to create a dream team.

Ep.125.The Big Rebrand and why I'm saying goodbye to Out of the Bubble !

Ep.125.The Big Rebrand and why I'm saying goodbye to Out of the Bubble !

Going solo for a quick catch up and to tell you all why I'm saying goodbye to Out of the Bubble and hello to Liberté-Free to Be!

Don't panic, I'm not going anywhere but I am having a big rebrand and embracing change.

Since I first started the podcast in 2018 I've been on my own journey of growth alongside the 124 women I've interviewed.

I started Out of the Bubble because when I first started modelling at 46 I was often overwhelmed with imposter syndrome, had wobbles of insecurity and self doubt and I gained great strength and inspiration from other women's stories on social media. I wanted to create a platform for these women to create a positive ripple effect on other women in midlife.

The name came from my own life changes, such as divorce that took me to a new stage of life where I just had to step out of my own bubble and I've never looked back.

I'm 53 this May and I feel the most aligned and confident now than at any stage of my adult life and that's exciting. It's a liberating feeling to stop worrying about if you fail, to stop caring what others might be thinking of you and to embrace all of you, flaws and all.

Which is what's led me to the rebrand decision, I started feeling like I'd stepped out of the bubble and was ready to move on, I hope I've taken lots of you with me!

The podcast will now be called Liberté- Free To Be and It will be business as usual just with an extra sparkle of my new vava voom!

My new logo reflects where I'm at right now in life and it feels good to be showing up this way.

I will be launching the next series 6, on Tuesday 2nd May.

Don't worry I'll be back before then to keep you update with all the details!

What does Free to Be mean to you?

Back soon but in the meantime...

Ep.124 Are you ready to ditch the alcohol? Meet Claire Owen the Soberholic

Ep.124 Are you ready to ditch the alcohol? Meet Claire Owen the Soberholic

Are you one of the many that ditched the alcohol for a dry January this year, only to go straight back on it February?

One of the things I've noticed now I'm going through the menopause is the effect alcohol has on my mental wellbeing, it increases my anxiety levels and zaps my energy so I've cut right back. I still have the odd G & T but I can imagine ditching it all together at some point so I was very interested to talk with Claire Owen.

Meet Claire Owen , aka the Soberholic. Claire went from drinking 100 units a week (10 bottles of wine) to quitting and has never looked back! I know lots of women like myself that are going through the menopause or peri-menopause and alcohol is no longer working for them. So many of us continue to drink , partly out of habit and perhaps because it's so ingrained in our culture but what would it feel like to stop?

After volunteering in a recovery clinic, Claire retrained as a life coach; after being inspired to question her own relationship with alcohol after watching her good friend's health decline. She now supports women worldwide to take back control without judgement, shame or fear.

Claire's mission is to rebrand sober as the goal-seeking choice for women who desire more than a bottle of wine after another stressful day. Her service inspires women to put down the glass and aim for the life of their dreams.

Claire is now 4 years alcohol free and her husband's joined her too with almost 2 years alcohol free and she had no idea life could be so good without wine!

 Food for thought!

Subjects covered-

-Claires former relationship with alcohol

-Deciding to ditch the bottle

-What differences Claire noticed alcohol free

-How the alcohol industry have targeting women with their marketing

Ep.123 Out of the Bubble- Special Mothers Day episode- It's time to meet my mum

Ep.123 Out of the Bubble- Special Mothers Day episode- It's time to meet my mum

What better way for me to celebrate Mother's Day this year than to invite my own mum along for a chat. I started this podcast because I wanted women over 40 to have a platform to share their stories , to be heard and feel seen so I couldn't think of a better way to show my mum some love than to include her in this conversation.

How often do we really sit down and listen to older members of our family and friends , It's easy to forget they had a life before being a parent and I loved this weeks chat with my mum. To say that my mum has had her share of battles along the way is an under statement yet her attitude to life has always remained positive and she has shown my sister Deborah and I such strength of character.

My mum has suffered with Multiple Sclerosis since I was 2 years old and has had a rollercoaster life with remissions and long periods of illness but her upbeat attitude has helped carry her through. Unfortunately she now has a rare blood cancer to cope with and as we expected she is tackling this with her usual tenacious and pragmatic attitude. Glenda will be 78 this year and there's been many times when she was told she wouldn't make it so every moment spent together is even more precious.

Subjects covered-

- Adoption

 - Leaving home at 16 an moving to another place solo

- Music & Life in the 60's

 - Being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 27

The groups, all run by volunteers, offer a brilliant way to meet others affected by the condition and help reduce isolation. A wide range of services and support are available, from social activities and exercise classes, to therapies like physio and massage. The free MS Helpline receives thousands of calls every year from people with MS or their friends, family and carers. Why do so many women still find it difficult to talk openly about money?

I know from my own personal experience of going through a divorce at 40 , how important it is to have a financial plan in place. I found myself practically invisible when it came to my financial status and have spent the last decade building my credit rating and financial stability back up.

If only I'd met this weeks guest earlier life might have been a little bit less stressful!

Sarah Siddons set up her practice, Siddons & Co Financial Planning, from scratch in 2008 after a major career change. Providing bespoke goals-based advice helping clients with practical solutions to their financial issues. Sarah's aim is to ensure her clients have financial security and enough money to enjoy their retirement.

It is about the importance of financial planning for women.

Subjects covered-

* How Sarah's own experience sparked a real passion about this area and how important it is for women to take control of their finances.

* Why women often find it difficult to talk about money openly?*  After having gone through the divorce process herself Sarah shares lessons learnt from her own experiences.

* If you are instigating the divorce, what do you need to do?

*What is the ideal process to follow to ensure that you are making the best possible decisions about your finances from an informed position and help you achieve the financial outcome you need for you and your children.

* If a divorce has been thrust upon you, how do you take control when you suddenly feel like all control is gone and you're firefighting. There are ways to take back control, you just need to know what to do and the key things you need to have in place.

Ep.121 Representation Matters. "Celebrate the Grey" with Stephanie O'Dell.

Ep.121 Representation Matters. "Celebrate the Grey" with Stephanie O'Dell.

Those that have followed me for awhile will already know how passionate I am about representation of older women in the fashion and beauty industry. We all need to see women that we can relate to, no matter what age, shape or size and it matters for our mental wellbeing. So I already knew that this weeks guest and I would have a LOT to talk about!

When Stephanie O Dell started her 'Celebrate the Gray' blog little did you know she know what she was creating. Stephanie is the founder of Celebrate the grey agency, representing grey models, influencers and women over 50 to help change the ageist narrative in the fashion industry.

Like me, Stephanie is passionate about updating the age of models used in marketing and giving women their power back in their ageing journey. She has built a strong following and community of like-minded women who want to change the face of aging.

Celebrate The Gray Collective represents over 200 gray/silver haired “real” models. It has access to 100s of ambassadors 50+ and offers age inclusion consulting for brands and companies. Women want to be seen as they age in marketing and want their faces, bodies, voices and opinions valued and authentically represented.

“We are a strong, engaged collective of women who are passionate about updating the way women are viewed as we age,” O’Dell says. “We want our facies, bodies, voices, and opinions valued and authentically represented. I believe that being a woman today means not letting anyone define you. You define you!”

Stephanie is a national speaker and thought leader on age inclusion.

Ep.120. How to be a happy introvert with Sarah Bryer, founder of Show Girl Coaching.

Ep.120. How to be a happy introvert with Sarah Bryer, founder of Show Girl Coaching.

Have you ever been told you're the shy one? Or felt like you've been written off as the quiet one?

I was always labelled as being ‘shy’ when I was younger and not in a positive way. The more you hear it the more you retreat but those that knew me well enough would always see the real me. For years I struggled to show my inner confidence but I could feel it in there waiting to burst out.

I like my own space and I’m quietly confident but it doesn’t mean I can’t roar like a lion when needed!

Confidence comes in all different shapes and sizes, loud, quiet, big, small and it’s never too late to find yours!
#staytruetoyourself
Sarah Bryer worked for a well-known Insurer, looking after a team of introverts. Clever, capable women, who were being held back because they didn't shout about their achievements, they didn't network or small talk by the coffee machine.

As Sarah started one of the women had just returned from stress leave. Visibly shaking as she met her.

Sarah worked with these women on internal bureaucracy and navigating the company politics, manager ego's, networking and how to manage upwards. Sarah protected them until they were strong enough to do it all themselves.

They managed difficult people, hosted project meetings like a boss. Picked up the phone to call people they'd only ever emailed as she watched on, knowing the research that had gone into them and the work they had done was paying off.

Sarah saw first hand how their confidence was rebuilt and then her role was made redundant.

This was the point where she found her purpose, to build these women up.

Show Girl Coaching has been created for Introverted Women. To increase their confidence and self-awareness.

Show Girl is a non-judgemental coaching practice that is 100% focused on increasing confidence and enhancing a positive mindset in smart Introverted Women.

Ep.119 Out of the Bubble- I love drama in my clothes not in my life! with Rebecca Rodden, founder of Eluroom.

So many women over 40 are left feeling invisible on the high street which showed in the results in my Midlife Body Confidence survey last year when 70% of the 200 women reported feeling invisible. Rebecca Rodden is the founder of Eluroom, offering a beautiful collection of key wardrobe pieces that you return to time and time again as you look and feel amazing in them.  Chic yet comfortable, versatile enough to travel easily with you for those 'life on the go' moments. Rebecca is on a mission to inspire women to radiate JOY through effortless style & mindset to live a full spirited life with confidence.

Rebecca grew up in Australia and has spent all of her adult life in London, enjoying a career in fashion, starting out as a receptionist at Ted Baker & progressing through the ranks to Buying Director, which she loved. Rebecca love creating things,  seeing the pleasure people get in dressing. Working with partners around the world such as Harrods, Selfridges, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. She has an extensive knowledge about creating collections and how to guide people in adapting their style and move it forward.

Gaining insight into how you dress & what you wear can set your mood or mindset for the day. Rebecca's other favourite thing (aside from my husband and children) is yoga and meditation. After a life time of practice she became a teacher and gets such a buzz sharing in an uplifting experience. Rebecca took the plunge and left her role in March 2020 - talk about timing to reinvent her life!

Ep.116 Going solo- Sharing my thoughts on the Midlife Body Confidence survey results

Ep.116 Going solo- Sharing my thoughts on the Midlife Body Confidence survey results

I decided to carry out this Midlife Body Confidence survey to gauge how women over 40 really feel about their bodies and what impacts, positive or negative, may alter their body confidence, as this age group so often get left out of the equation.

I'll be sharing my thoughts on the results over 2 podcast episodes , as you know it's a subject I am very passionate about so I had a lot to say!

What does it mean to be body confident?

Body confidence is feeling good in your own skin, no matter your size, shape, or age. It's about accepting and loving yourself, just as you are. And while that might sound easy enough, achieving body confidence can be a real challenge—especially for women over 40.

Think about it: By the time we reach our 40s, we've been through a lot. We've borne children, weathered breakups, and divorce, and dealt with job losses and financial setbacks. We've also been bombarded by society's unrealistic standards of beauty. As a result, it's no wonder that so many of us struggle with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy.

It is possible to overcome negative feelings and achieve true body confidence at any age.

Here's some useful tips:

1. Accept your age

One of the best things you can do for your body confidence is to accept the fact that you are no longer in your 20s (or 30s). That doesn't mean resigning yourself to a life of frumpy clothes and taking it easy on the weekends. Rather, it means accepting that your body has changed and that those changes are perfectly normal.

2. Don't compare yourself to others

It's human nature to compare ourselves to others, but when it comes to body confidence, comparisons are always going to leave us feeling worse about ourselves. Instead of dwelling on what you don't have, focus on what you do have—and be grateful for it.

3. Focus on health, not looks

Oftentimes, we become so focused on how we look that we forget about how we feel. But true body confidence comes from feeling our best—mentally and physically. In other words, worry less about fitting into those skinny jeans and more about eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise, and getting enough sleep. When you take care of yourself, you'll feel better both inside and out—and that will show in your appearance as well as in your overall sense of well-being.

4. Find something to love about your body

We all have aspects of our appearance that we're self-conscious about—but instead of fixating on those things, try to find one thing that you love about your body for every aspect that you're not crazy about. For example, if you don't like your arms, think about how strong they are from all those years of carrying around kids or grocery bags. If you're not thrilled with your hips, remember how feminine they make you look. Focusing on the positive will help you see yourself in a whole new light—and feel more confident as a result."

The most important thing to remember is that everyone's definition of body confidence is different—and there's no "right" way to achieve it. Just do what feels right for you—and don't be afraid to ask for help along the way! If you're struggling to love your body just as it is, consider reaching out to a therapist or counsellor who can help you learn to appreciate all that YOU are—inside and out

Ep.111.Honestly with Honor! Maker of amazing holidays in France and Champion of Midlife Women

This weeks guest is joining me from her home in the South of France. Living the dream life with some curve balls along the way.

Honor Marks is an instagram Coach and gîte owner in the South of France. Honor shares her journey on social media with honesty, good humour and a good dose of reality. She is passionate about supporting other women in midlife and helping them refine their mojo.

Followed by the pandemic which saw an abrupt stop to her gite rental business she was left at a crossroads.

She had already created a strong social media following on Instagram with confidence so she turned her hand to coaching and helping other women become more confident and visible as an Instagram coach. Life has slowly returned back to normal with a summer full of gite guests so what's next for Honor and her French adventures?

Subject covered-

  • Moving to France and making someone else's dream work
  • Becoming a site owner
  • Curve balls at 50 and getting divorced
  • Going solo
  • Navigating the pandemic and changing direction

One thing I have learnt from interviewing all these fabulous women is that nothing is impossible!

Ep.110 Finding your voice after tragedy and trauma, an 'ordinary' woman achieving extra ordinary things, with Baroness Helen Newlove.

Ep.110 Finding your voice after tragedy and trauma, an 'ordinary' woman achieving extra ordinary things, with Baroness Helen Newlove.

Baroness Helen Newlove has been on my guest wish list for several years so I was so delighted to finally have the opportunity to talk with her and I wasn't disappointed, we had so much to talk about.

Helen has so many strings to her bow including broadcaster, public speaker, Author of 'It Could Happen To You', Pro Vice Chancellor University of Bolton and not forgetting the current Deputy Speaker House of Lords

The sad truth is Helen's drive and sense of purpose comes from a place of unimaginable trauma that no one should have to experience. Helen Newlove came to prominence after her husband, Garry Newlove was murdered by three youths in 2007. After Garrys death she set up a number of foundations that aimed to tackle the UK drinking culture as well as providing support to young people.

All her hard work didn't go unnoticed which led to her to becoming the Victims Commissioner in 2012 and is now serving as the Deputy Speaker of House of Lords.

Helen was driven by her own experience of dealing with a traumatic life changing event; she wanted to ensure others didn't have to go through the same ordeal and that lessons could be learnt.

"I am just an ordinary woman, propelled into high profile by a set of horrifying circumstances which I wish with all my heart had never occurred."

Subjects covered-

  • Garrys tragic murder and life afterwards
  • The justice system and what inspired Helen to campaign for change
  • Finding her own voice
  • The power of sharing your story
  • The importance of community
  • Stepping out of her comfort zone and taking on new roles that she could never have imagined
  • Imposter syndrome
  • Life in the House of Lords
  • Finding that work/life balance and what Helens self care looks like
  • What's next? Connecting with others and become a coach.

EP 109 Why is really can be a 'Magnificent Midlife' with Rachel Lankester.

Rachel Lankester is no stranger to the show, in fact this is her second visit since our first interview back on Ep.20 , in 2019 but she's been a busy woman since then so I couldn't wait for round 2!

Rachel is the founder of Magnificent Midlife, an online hub inspiring woman in midlife and beyond. Magnificent Midlife exists to challenge negative stereotypes of older women, change perceptions, and transform midlife and beyond into a time of excitement and fulfilment.

Like me Rachel is passionate about celebrating, championing and empowering women in midlife and beyond and her Magnificent Midlife Podcast does just that. She can also add author to her list of her credentials after recently publishing Magnificent Midlife: Transform Your Middle Years, Menopause and Beyond  which I found thought provoking and left me feeling even more positive about my own next chapter.

Subjects covered-

-Going through early menopause

-Where the inspiration came from to start Magnificent Midlife

-Why it's important we challenge the outdated stereo types of midlife women

-Midlife transformations

-Why Rachel believes we need to hear more positive stories around the menopause

-Different attitudes to ageing across the world

-What we can learn from whales!

-Writing her first book, the highs and the lows

-Whats next?

You can find out lots more from Rachel  -https://magnificentmidlife.com

Ep.108. Food freedom & learning to love your body again, with non diet nutrition expert Mel Wakeman

Ep.108. Food freedom & learning to love your body again, with non diet nutrition expert Mel Wakeman

*Trigger warning- This episode discusses healing and recovering from disordered eating and poor body image

I'll be honest after years of yoyo dieting and disordered food habits I've been avoiding this subject on the podcast because I still see so much pressure on women to be a certain size and body shape pushed by the media and advertising. I've been following this weeks guest for awhile now and I really like her approach to finding food freedom and breaking down those negative thought patterns so I knew I had to invite her on the show.

Mel Wakeman specialises in non-diet nutrition and counselling for eating disorders and disordered eating, chronic dieting, compulsive exercise, weight and body image concerns, all through a weight inclusive lens. She also runs the food freedom community and hosts the podcast Cake Over Keto.

Subjects covered-

  • Mel's story
  • How Mel faced her own food demons
  • The manipulation of the diet industry
  • Breaking down the negative narrative around food and our bodies
  • There is more than one way to have a healthy happy body and it doesn't involve dieting
  • Where do the 'food rules' come from?
  • Learning to appreciate our bodies
  • Why women in midlife are vulnerable to eating disorders
  • What part do our hormones play in midlife and our changing bodies
  • Stigma and discrimination of our bodies in todays society

EP.107 Magic happens when you find your passion and purpose. Carron Cummings is a woman on a mission to support and empower women.

I first interviewed Carron Cummings in 2020 and was blown away by her drive and determination, she really is a woman with mission.

Carron's personal story and life experiences have taken her on a journey that she could never have anticipated. She's the founder of SimplyLadies.com, which is one of the UK's fastest growing women's lifestyle networking group in the country and her passion for helping and supporting other women is amazing.  Carron is not settling here on her mission to support and empower women. She is now using all her skills and personal experience to help other women through her coaching work and next stop is tackling the fashion industry.

We share the same opinions on the lack of diversity in the fashion industry and rather than sit back and watch with frustration Carron has started her own modelling agency to help represent people that not ally get missed by standard agencies. This is a woman who has found her voice and is using it to her best ability to help create change and support others. She's a fabulous inspiration and I hugely admire the work she is doing and her dedication.

Subjects covered-

  • Carrons traumatic life experiences that forced change
  • Dealing with grief
  • Finding inspiration to connect with other women
  • Starting the SimplyLadies lifestyle group on a shoestring budget
  • How Carron is using her own life experiences and skills to help lift other women up through her coaching work
  • Women empowerment in fashion
  • The next chapter - Code modelling -Why she's now tackling the lack of diversity in the fashion industry head on
  • From a studio to billboards- Defining moments
  • London Fashion Week- saying yes to new opportunities

Ep.106 Are you a "Reinvention Rebel?" with Pro-age influencer, speaker and podcast host Wendy Battles.

Ep.106 Are you a "Reinvention Rebel?" with Pro-age influencer, speaker and podcast host Wendy Battles.

This weeks guest is someone I have followed on Twitter for a while now, we have a very similar approach to midlife and both love sharing and inspiring other women.

Wendy Battles is a pro-age influencer, speaker and host of the "Rebellious Rebels" podcast which is all about sharing women's stories of reinvention later in life and on paper I would guess you'd say she's one of my podcast competitors.

Wendy describes herself as a "curious soul who loves to talk to people and understand their experiences". Believing that reinvention is a natural part of life, something that many of us have done numerous times. Wendy has found her voice in her fifties and she is unapologetically  pursuing her biggest dreams and desires.

"I created this podcast because I’m DONE with the limiting narrative about older women in our society. The narrative that’s focused on all things we lose as we age. I see it differently. I see this as an amazing time where wise women can find their true voice and step into a new sense of freedom – in an exciting and badass way" #wendybattles

Subjects covered-

  • Where the inspiration came from to start the podcast
  •  How society portrays older women in general
  • How we can shift the narrative and celebrate older women
  • Breaking down stereo typical barriers
  • What does pro-ageing mean for Women
  • Finding your voice and owning your story
  • Collaborating with your competitors

Ep.105 How to feel sexy, fabulous and excited about your next chapter with conscious sexuality educator, Sophie Cleere.

Ep.105 How to feel sexy, fabulous and excited about your next chapter with conscious sexuality educator, Sophie Cleere.

I talk to lots of women over 40 who tell me they feel disconnected from their bodies as they reach midlife, especially when they enter the peri-menopause and menopause. I know from my own experience that I started to struggle with the changes my body is going through in the menopause and that body confidence is never a done deal so it was great to talk to Sophie Cleere who is as passionate about helping women feel sexy and confident as I do.

Sophie Cleere is a women’s coach, yoga teacher and conscious sexuality educator. She is passionate about helping women feel sexy, fabulous and excited about the next chapter of their live and I’m all here for that! “Our sexuality has very little to do with being young and fertile and looking a certain way. In fact I feel the older we get, the more we know ourselves the sexier we are.” #Sophiecleere

Subjects covered-

  • Sophies own conscious sexuality journey
  • Body confidence
  • Sex and the peri-menopause and menopause
  • Womens sexuality
  • Re-connecting with our bodies later in life
  • Midlife transitions
  • Why there is still a stigma attached to discussing sexuality openly
  • The UK’s attitude to nudity compared other countries

  • Self love

Ep.104 Going solo! 52 and Fabulous with Rachel Peru.

Ep.104 Going solo! 52 and Fabulous with Rachel Peru.

To celebrate my 52nd birthday I thought it would be a good idea to go solo this week,  reflecting on the last year and sharing some of my own midlife journey.

I've learnt so much from the 103 women I've interviewed so far and each story brings me so much inspiration and reminds me how fabulous women are.

  • Here's the top 3 things I'm constantly reminded of

1. Women over 40 are bloody amazing, we are strong, resilient, brave and capable of living such amazing fulfilled lives.

2. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be scary but it's also the place where real magic can happen. So many of my guests have stepped 'out of their bubble' entering unknown territory and gone on to have amazing adventures, started new careers and changed direction. It's time to put our big knickers on and trust the process.

3. Keeping an open mind is the key to embracing this next chapter. Saying yes to new opportunities and trying new things, for no other reason than to explore what brings you real joy. It should be part of our self love routine.

  • The menopause and my own body confidence journey

On this weeks episode I also share how this last year has been a rollercoaster when it came to the menopause and my own body confidence. It will always be work in progress but I can manage the negative feelings so much better than I used to so it's about recognising those triggers and focussing on the positives.

The surge of anxiety threw me as well , although I've been on HRT since 2018- which helps, I'm now increasing my daily active levels, with a mixture of wild swimming, yoga, running and EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation) training and I'm starting to feel a lot calmer and more in control which is a relief. #keepingitreal

Ep.103 Money Talk- Lifting our limits by using our intuition with Helen Louse Adams

Ep.103 Money Talk- Lifting our limits by using our intuition with Helen Louse Adams

It's time we talked more openly about money and began being more honest about our financial goals, dreams and aspirations. When it comes to money women still find it difficult to talk about, I know it's not something my friends and I don't regularly talk about.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that grew up in the 70's hearing phrases like " money doesn't grow on trees" or "money should be saved for a rainy day". My parents drummed it in to me that talking about money was vulgar and we should never brag about it. I've spent lots of time working on my money mindset and learning to shed those limiting money beliefs that have held me back.

Helen Louise Adams is the Global Leader of the Female Business Revolution. She helps female entrepreneurs all around the globe to create the unlimited income they desire and deserve so they can spend more time living the first class lives they really want. And she helps them do it in the fastest and most powerful way…..using their intuition! After spending too many years living according to other people’s expectations , and suffering financially as a result, she decided to follow her soul, and teach other women to open up and do the same. Her mission within the next 10 years is to empower one million women all around the world to create the income THEY desire….with no limits.

My conversation with Helen has really made me think about my own financial goals and expectations and I've spent time writing a 5 year plan. I definitely recommend it.

With this in mind I have looked at ways that I can create some income from producing the Out of the Bubble podcast as up until now it has been a pure passion project with no financial reward. I love sharing all these amazing and inspiring women and have learnt so much from all of them, If you enjoy listening to them as much as I do, then please feel free to Buy Me A Coffee, I really appreciate your support.

Ep.102 A bag full of body confidence with Burlesque dancer Pupin Devert

Ep.102 A bag full of body confidence with Burlesque dancer Pupin Devert

I'm going to let you in to a little secret! I love the art behind Burlesque dancing and learning to burlesque dance and perform live once in my life is at the top of my bucket list. So you can imagine how excited I was when I recently came across Judith Vandepeer otherwise known as "Pupin Devert".

Judith started burlesque 3 years ago at the age of 55, and absolutely loved it.  She really wanted to capture something about herself that she'd not shown before and to show a glamour which fully embraced her age, size and her newly grown out natural grey hair. The fact that she's a fellow silver and very sassy woman was the icing on the cake.

Judith is burlesque performer based in Hastings, and has been performing burlesque for over 3 years, as well as producing her own shows - both live and online. Travelling with her acts all over the UK and abroad, and has collected national and international titles in burlesque and cabaret.    Judith is also a ‘Grey Model’ and loves creating body/age/sex positive images, as well as working on commercial shoots for companies such as Snag Tights and The Bias Cut Boutique.

She is passionate about wanting to create a space which is positive and judgement free, and wants to spread the message that ‘Burlesque is for Everyone’   We had so much to talk about and I love Judith's new found body confidence and how she's smashing down those midlife stereo-typical barriers, showing other women in their 50's that we are definitely not invisible.

Subjects covered-

  • The history of burlesque
  •  Dita Von Teese
  • Costume design and creativity
  • Ageism in the burlesque world
  • Body confidence
  • Other peoples reaction
  • Overcoming her fears in her first performance
  • How she chose her stage name
  • Why burlesque is so empowering
  • The Solid Gold Silver show
  • Teaching classes
  • What's next!

I recommend you start following Judith on her instagram @pupindevert for heaps of body confidence inspiration and some fabulous outfits!

If you're in the Hastings area you can also find out about her burlesque classes.

What would your burlesque name be?

I'm thinking of Lucy Lark or Glenda Ganda ( something with a bit of Yorkshire in it.... work in progress!!).

Starting with this weeks guest, Stephanie Raffelock. Stephanie is an award winning, Amazon best selling Author of "A Delightful Little Book on Aging", as well as a Podcaster and Speaker. She didn't start her writing career until she retired at 60 so she's the perfect example of how our age doesn't have to define us. Stephanie helps self-aware, educated women who are interested in shirking the toxic myths and stereotypes of aging, something that out of the Bubble is very much about too.

She proves that women aren’t finished living their best lives at 50, 60 and beyond, but instead, how they become the wise elders of our culture. Stephanie celebrates age and shows how it’s a privilege to grow old - how every single day is a gift.  “Peter Pan’s mantra was that he was never going to grow up. My mantra is that we never stop growing”

Subjects covered-

Overcoming ageism in ourselves and in America.

Why women especially are afraid of getting older.

Ep.100 Sex, Whips and My Hairy Bits with humorous erotic author Stephanie Oram

Ep.100 Sex, Whips and My Hairy Bits with humorous erotic author Stephanie Oram

* Adult content of a sexual nature discussed

What better way to celebrate my 100th episode than with humorous erotic fiction author Stephanie Oram.

Self published author of the Amazon best selling Wax Whips and my Hairy Bits series of books. A midlife, menopausal northerner with a propensity for using rude words. It's time to find out why this 51 year old, menopausal Mother of three picked changed direction in a way that she could never have imagined pre-lockdown!

The first lockdown caused Stephanie to undergo the most unusual of career changes...from recruitment to writing erotic comedy.

Stephanie was all set to go with her new recruitment agency which would have been aimed at the over 50 market when the pandemic started, putting a sudden halt to all those plans. During this time like most she needed a creative outlet, lots of people I know learnt skills or rekindled new hobbies like baking, sewing and crafting. But after reading an extract from one of The Fifty Shades of Grey books Stephanie got to thinking how unrelatable erotic fiction is to most women and how it might be fun to write her own more realistic story just for fun.

By her own admission Steph describes herself as slightly prudish prior to all of this so after lots of reading up, and chatting to friends she started. What started as a project for her own amusement has now led to a four book series which has landed in the top best selling Amazon list in the humorous erotic category.

I've read the first book Wax, Whips and My Hairy Bits and found it hilarious and loved the northern humour coming through.

Subjects covered-

  • Pre-lockdown plans to start her own recruitment agency
  • Where the inspiration came from to start writing
  • Friends and Family response
  • Where do you begin to research a book like this
  • Readers response
  • Literary agents dismissal of this category of writing
  • Starting something new and all the new possibilities it might bring
  • What's next?

Ep.99 Out of the Bubble with Karen Sutton, The Widow Coach

Ep.99 Out of the Bubble with Karen Sutton, The Widow Coach

*trigger warning, this episode contains conversation about loss and grieving.

The conversation around death and losing loved ones is still something we find difficult to talk about.  Karen Sutton, is the UK’s first grief and loss coach to specialise in supporting those widowed early in life. Karen provides emotional and practical support to anyone dealing with the loss of a loved one, wherever you are in your grieving journey.

Through her own experience with loss, she understands how difficult it is trying to navigate your way through these traumatic life events. That's why she is so passionate about helping you to look after yourself, feel more positive, take back control, and build the life you desire.  We can’t control what happens to us in life, but we can control how we choose to respond, the choices me make following loss have a huge impact on how we move forward. Karen doesn't profess to have a magic wand or a secret to ‘getting over it’, because she doesn't believe it’s about that. Sadly we have to go through the grieving process, but there are things we can do to help us navigate our way through it more positively and learn to carry our grief far more lightly. Karen wants to help as many people as she can take responsibility for their healing, discover their strength, resilience and capabilities, and become the person they want to be, therefore creating a life in which they can flourish.

She truly believes life after loss can still be beautiful. I love following Karens social media posts as she balances the reality of life after loss with the beauty in being able to grow and learn and thrive again leaving a really strong positive message to others who may be at the beginning of their difficult journey.

"I just love to offer people hope and an understanding that nothing is permanent. I like to educate around grief and help people feel more empowered in their grieving journey." #karensutton

Subjects covered-

  • How her world fell apart in 2016 when she lost her husband Simon, and her children lost their dad.
  •  How she knew she didn't want Simons death to define the rest of hers and her children lives
  • The importance of reaching out and connecting with others who can relate to your experiences T
  • Therapy and talking
  • What happens next, where do you turn when you've done all the therapy and reached out to all the groups
  • Rebuilding your life after loss
  • Making new choices

Ep.98 Out of the Bubble with human behaviour dating expert Dr.Mairi Macleod

Ep.98 Out of the Bubble with human behaviour dating expert Dr.Mairi Macleod

Dr.Mairi Macleod is an evolutionary biologist, speaker, science writer and expert on human behaviour. She's pioneering the use of an understanding of our evolved preferences and motivations to inform how we can change our behaviour to better suit our needs in the modern world. She applies this in relationships and in the workplace, and she has a special interest in helping single, midlife women find a quality partner – having been through this challenging process herself.

Mairi now helps individuals to find a quality partner, to understand and improve their romantic and sexual relationships, to achieve greater health and wellbeing, and to find effective strategies to excel at work while achieving the work-life balance they desire.

Ep.97 Out of the Bubble with Minreet Kaur, Award winning journalist to swimming instructor!

Ep.97 Out of the Bubble with Minreet Kaur, Award winning journalist to swimming instructor!

Minreet Kaur is an award winning broadcast journalist and now she's retrained to become a swimming instructor.

She is the daughter of the famous Skipping Sikh MBE and won report of the year in 2020. Minreet has now retrained and is following a very different career path becoming a swimming instructor. She is on a mission to help women, particularly from the Sikh community, to learn to swim and become more confident in the water. I love how open to change Minreet has been throughout her different career journeys as fear of change can often hold so many women back in midlife.

This change in direction from journalist to swimming teacher is all down to wanting to help her community to become healthier and more active. Since she started training she's had lots of requests from Asian women who would like her to teach their children, as well as themselves and their parents – the referrals are endless.I love Minreet's quote "I want to help women feel confident in the deep end" as it can really be applied to lots of different aspects of our lives. Learning to sit with life changes and embracing stepping out of our comfort zones.

"Growing up, there was always a taboo around swimming.

I didn’t really see anyone who looked like me that was teaching swimming – and even in recent years not much has changed.

Culturally and traditionally, swimming hasn’t been a sport that’s been promoted to Asian women.

There are no Sikh swimming role models so of course it is not an activity that everyone wants to do." #minreetkaur

I'm a big believer in the idea of,  "If you can't see it, be it!

Subjects covered-

  • The challenges of pursuing a career in journalism in her 30's
  • Finding her voice and the importance of sharing our stories
  • The importance of social media as a platform to be seen and heard
  • Lockdown life and how the Skipping challenge started with her dad
  • The importance of serving the community
  • What led Minreet to become a swimming instructor
  • Why representation matters
  • Body confidence
  • Life after divorce for a Sikh woman
  • Challenging outdated views
  • Learning new skills
  • Finding joy through ParkRuns, making new connections and stay healthy
