Welcome one and all to the 100th episode of Overdue Rentals. Join Mike and Matthew as they discuss some of their favorite moments from some of their most beloved films. These are moments, scenes, monologues, music, cinematography, looks that immediately make you think you've just seen the most beautiful experience ever put onto film.

We're on a roll crossing off guests we wanted to have on since we started Overdue Rentals. Today we are talking to the one and only Scoot McNairy about his new slow burn thriller, Blood for Dust. We're also talking about the 2010 breakthrough feature from Gareth Edwards, Monsters. Blood for Dust is available in theaters on on digital this Friday, April 19th.

This has been a long time coming for us here at Overdue Rentals. One of our top guests we wanted to speak to has always been Dylan Baker. And one of the top choices we wanted to talk to him about was the 1991 John Candy starring, Delirious. Well, the day has finally come. Dylan joins us to talk about his new film, LaRoy, Texas; which is out in theaters and OnDemand this Friday, April 12th. But as mentioned already, we then get to talk to him about working with John Candy, Raymond Burr, Emma Samms, Mariel Hemmingway (just to name a few) and why he has black bars on 2 AND 7.

Though almost everyone in the world knows the man, many people still haven't seen David Dastmalchian in his purest form. Through his collaborations with such pioneers as Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, and James Gunn (to name a few), his face has been plastered into the minds of movie goers everywhere. But there are many sides of Dastmalchian that many still haven't witnessed. So, whether it be in his new film Late Night with the Devil, or through his semi-autobiographical 2014 film Animals; it's time people get cozied up to David Dastmalchian.

If you're like us, you probably have seen a clip run across your social media feeds showing the time a TV show surprised and elderly man finding out the rest of the studio audience around him were the now grown children he helped save during the onset of WWII. That man was Nicholas Winton and the new film One Life is about the struggle Winton went through to save close to 1,000 children from being sent to concentration camps. Actor/musician Johnny Flynn plays Winton in his younger years while he is trying to work out how to immigrate these children into England before it is too late. Johnny joined us to talk about taking on the role, as well as his turn as David Bowie in the 2020 release, Stardust.

It's always a treat to have a great conversation with a guest. But our chat with the great Thomas Haden Church takes things to a whole new level. Joining us to discuss his new film, Accidental Texan we had to also speak with Thomas about his work on the overlooked, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. Little did we know that we would end up talking with the man about a myriad of other films and experiences as well. Though most people will associate Alex Winter with his performance as Bill S. Preston, Esq. in the Bill & Ted series, he has done so much great work both in front and behind the camera over the years. While Alex dropped in to talk to us about his new film, Destroy All Neighbors, we had to talk to him about his crown jewel; Freaked. Alex is one of the greatest people to chat with and he has so many wonderful things to say, including some uplifting news on a possible official return of Freaked.

We get deep and insightful with our dear friend and colleague Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi about the 1998 Jim Carrey feature, The Truman Show. Close to 25 years later and this film is just as important as the day it came out. Join us as we talk reality TV, free will, and ancient Greek philosophy. Oh yeah, and Jim Carrey.

Our good friend Bevin and host of the new Tubi original chat show, Beverages with Bevin, joins us this week to talk about 1998s Pleasantville. Of course, we have many tangential discussions of Barbie and other films along the way. There are so many personal films out there from many seasoned filmmakers. Danish writer/director Niels Arden Oplev has made a film that is very close to his heart, and invited audiences in to learn and explore some hard to understand subjects. Rose is both touching and heavy, but always light and airy. Definitely check it out the first second you can. But, while we had Niels with us, we also had to talk about his original adaptation of Stieg Larsson's, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We discuss what goes into adapting such a lauded work of art and the issues with its not so publicized name change.

Happy November! Let's kick off the month right with the one and only Neil Burger. His new film, The Marsh King's Daughter is out this Friday, November 3rd. But we are also talking about this week's Overdue Rental, his 2011 sleeper hit, Limitless. The Bradley Cooper/Robert DeNiro thriller was such a smash hit when it hit theaters and though it spawned a TV show of the same name, not enough people are talking about the film nowadays. Let's fix that!

Freddy Fazbear's is finally about finally be open for adoring fans to revel in the live action production of the popular jump scare video game. We are joined by the man who brought the visuals of the robotic over-run child's pizzeria, cinematographer Lyn Moncrief. Lyn chats about everything that went into brining the game to life as well as his Overdue Rental choice, the 2000 Janusz Kamiński helmed, Lost Souls, starring Winona Ryder.

Dear friend of the podcast and life in general; Max Evry dropped by to discuss his new book A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune. An Oral History. And, to keep things in the Lynchian family tree, we are discussing the Twin Peaks movie, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. A Masterpiece in Disarray: David Lynch’s Dune. An Oral History will be in stores on Sept. 19th, and you can still pre-order your copy now. Everyone loves a part 2! Right? Welcome back to our discussion about the new film The Adults as this week we have Sophia Lillis joining us to talk about the sibling rivalry between herself, Michael Cera, and Hannah Gross. But this is Overdue Rentals, which means we have another Sophie Lillis film to talk about with her, and this time we have a lovely discussion about Gretel & Hansel for you, dear listener. Family issues all around!

Please note, this interview was recorded on June 13th, 2023, before the Sag/Aftra strike. This Friday see the release of The Adults, the new film starring Michael Cera, Sophia Lillis, and Hannah Gross as a group of siblings who are forced to come to terms with some of their issues they never got past from their youth. We caught the film this past June when the film was shown at the Tribeca Film Festival. We had the pleasure of talking to both Michal and Sophia about the film. What a perfect storm of consequences. The legendary film maker Steve James is back with a new documentary, A Compassionate Spy. And the timing couldn't be more perfect as its subject was part of that little thing called The Manhattan Project. You know, you might have been inundated with the subject with it being the main focus of a little movie called Barbie...I mean Oppenheimer! We were lucky enough to have some time to talk with Steve about his new documentary as well as his cornerstone revolutionary doc, Hoop Dreams. Tune in for a great one here! Dennis Haysbert is someone everyone is familiar with, even if they don't know it. Maybe you know him as Pedro Cerrano from Major League. Maybe you're a 24 fan and know him as President David Palmer. Or maybe you just know him as The Allstate insurance man. The fact of the matter is, the man has had one hell of a storied career and is so much more than the roles people may associate him with. He can currently be seen as Clarence C. Baker in the Hulu/Disney+ picture, Flamin' Hot. The film chronicles the man behind the special Frito/Lay snack and can be seen by all starting this Friday, June 9th. While we had Dennis with us to talk about the movie, we also took the chance to talk to him about the indie neo-noir he starred in from 1993, Suture. Strap in for a good one folks!

The 2023 Harlem Film Festival is kicking off this weekend in New York City and we were lucky enough to be joined by Doug E. Doug to talk about his new film, In the Weeds, which premieres this Friday the 19th at the fest. Doug stars in, co-directed, co-wrote, and co-produced the film and will be on hand with his co-creator and cast members for a Q&A after the screening. While Doug was with us, we just had to talk about the 1992 Kid 'N Play comedy Class Act which he brilliant co-starred in. In the long span of film history there have always been releases that were deemed controversial upon their release. Catherine Hardwicke's directorial debut, Thirteen, was definitely one of those films that was met with a lot of backlash thinking it was glamourizing aspects of teenage life that it certainly wasn't. You couldn't turn a corner at the time of its release without hearing the buzz around the movie, whether is was for or against it. We had the opportunity to revisit the film with Catherine whilst also talking about her new comedy, Mafia Mamma, which stars Toni Collette and Monica Bellucci. Mafia Mamma is out in theaters now starting Friday, April 14th.

Another true legend joins us as this week we have Cheech Marin joining us. Cheech can be seen in the new Bobby Farrelly film, Champions, which opens March 10th in theaters. But we just had to talk about Cheech's directorial debut, Born in East L.A., while we had him with us. Another lovely chat with an absolute lovely person, please enjoy!

As you know, here on Overdue Rentals we want to shed light back on films that were once talked about ad nauseum, but now don't seem to get the same attention they once had. Starship Troopers by our own admission is a film that still gets a lot of attention, but as it has no started being re-evaluated over the last few years, we thought there was no better time to discuss the film with its star, Casper Van Dien. Casper currently is starring in Daughter which is now available to watch on Amazon Prime. We took the time to discuss his new, sinister, roll as well as recap the 1997 sci-fi monster, Starship Troopers. 

Note: This episode was recorded in Oct. of 2022. Welcome friends as we welcome our friend and colleague Ed Douglas to talk about the 2017 Gore Verbinski mind bender, A Cure for Wellness. Join along as we talk about eels, dentistry, Mia Goth, and some questionable motives that drive's Jason Isaac's antagonist in this twisted watery tale. 

Very rarely do we get to speak with someone who was part of a movie we just discussed in a recent episode, but that changes now! We were pleased to have the time to chat with Callie Hernandez, who starred along side directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead in The Endless, which we just covered with Justin and Aaron a few episodes ago. Luckily, that freed up Callie to talk to us about her starring role in 2016s Blair Witch. Callie is currently part of an all star cast in Amazon Prime's Shotgun Wedding, which is available to subscribers starting Jan. 27th. And we have to say, the film is a pleasant surprise. It's been far too long since we had a feature length film from Jason Eisner. He first hit the scene winning a contest to have a fan shot, fake trailer be part of the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse experience. That fake trailer was Hobo With a Shotgun, which he later turned into a full length feature starring Rutger Hauer in 2011. Now he is back with Kids Vs. Aliens, a full length feature based on the short Slumber Party Alien Abduction, which was his contribution to the V/H/S 2 anthology. We spoke with Jason about both these films and had a blast doing so.

It's finally a reality! Since the inception of Overdue Rentals, we had always planned on doing an episode on the Sam Raimi classic, Darkman. Sans having Raimi himself or Liam Neeson join us to talk about the film, we always said we would wait to have Josh Ruben on as a guest to discuss the film as we know he is not only a superfan of the film himself; but has been campaigning to make a new Darkman, himself. With his new film, A Wounded Fawn, now on Shudder, we took the time to speak with Josh both about this new, trippy venture into the horror world, as well as his love for Darkman. We also couldn't resist taking a bit of time to profess our love for Ruben's Werewolves Within.

Still stuffing your face with leftovers? Then what better time to listen to our wonderful chat with Lee Child. Many of you will know Lee Child as the man who writes the Jack Reacher series of novels, but he's also recently acted as the executive producer on the new documentary, Life and Life, which tells the story of Reggie Austin and his life in and our of the prison system at San Quentin. While we had Lee in the shop, we also had to take the time to discuss the Tom Cruise starring series of Jack Reacher films, as well as some of the early options for who could have also played this historic character. 

Brush off your evening wear and get ready for the feast of a lifetime with the writers for the Searchlight Pictures release, The Menu. Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, the minds behind this devilishly brilliant satire are here to discuss the magic behind the film from start to finish. While they are in the shop, they also wanted to talk about a true Overdue Rental, the 1988, Chevy Chase starring comedy, Funny Farm. We also are discussing what is arguable the film that put him on the map, 2007's Death at a Funeral, as well as it's 2010 remake. Happy October everyone! What better way to kick off Halloween month than a nice chat with David Howard Thornton who portrays the twisted killer Art the Clown in Terrifier and its new sequel, Terrifier 2. Much to our delight, when it came time to talk about his Overdue Rental choice, David decided to go a bit further away from the Terrifier camp and chose to discuss Who Framed Roger Rabbit. How come there is never a question mark in the title of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? We should have looked into that!

It's another very special episodes kids! The absolute powerhouse that is Emily Watson joins us today to talk about her new film, God's Creatures. But you know, if we are going to have Emily Watson in the shop, we are going to also talk to her about her breakthrough role in Lars Von Trier's, Breaking the Waves. Speaking with Emily is just another reminder of how lucky we are to speak with the top talent in this business. It's podcast cross pollination time! Our friend and co-host of the Geek History Lesson podcast, Ashley Victoria Robinson joins us to talk about the Academy Award winning, yet still Overdue Rental, Argo. This best picture winner does still have some interesting controversies around it, and it feels strange that it dropped so far out of public consciousness; we just had to talk about it. Join us as we talk about all things Affleck and Argo, even as Matthew makes constant mistakes the whole way through!

Barbarian is a new horror/thriller from Zach Cregger of The Whitest Kids You Know. We were lucky enough to have the other Zach associated with the film, Zach Kuperstein with us to discuss his work as the films director of photography. Zach also discussed the work he did on the absolutely gorgeous; The Eyes of My Mother. If you haven't seen The Eyes of My Mother, make sure you get that taken care of as soon as you can. And don't forget to purchase your tickets for Barbarian which comes to theaters on Sept. 9th.

Our good friend. Alec Kubas-Meyer is back on in the store with us! This time, we are moving out of Germany (go listen to Alec's last appearance talking about Run Lola Run) and heading into China to talk about Stephen Chow's, Kung Fu Hustle. Join as as we talk about this absolute must see film.

While he is away, our good friend Andrew Korpan stopped by the shop to assist in talking to this week's guest; James Ponsoldt. James' new film Summering is hitting theaters this Friday, August 12th, and we took some time to talk about this new coming of age story, along with another type of coming of age story directed by James; The Spectacular Now. There are few people are lovely and kind as James out there, so this will be one fine listen for you all.

This week's special guest is writer/director Steve Pink who's new film, The Wheel, is available to rent now through all your favorite OnDemand services. Along with talking about what went into making this very intimate film, we discuss Steve's instant classic comedy, Hot Tub Time Machine and its sequel, Hot tub Time Machine Two. This is a great conversation that you don't want to miss and there are plenty of great little treats about many other films for your listening pleasure contained within.

Yes, you read that right! The one and only Wes Studi joins us to talk about his new film, A Love Song, which he stars in with Dale Dickey. While we had Mr. Studi on hand to speak with us, we also made sure to inquire about this week's Overdue Rental, the 1992 instant classic; The Last of the Mohicans. The film will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this September, so what better time to dive into the film with one of its stars. Our friend and colleague Andrew Korpan drops by the shop to discuss the Warren Beatty helmed Dick Tracy adaptation which starred every actor in the known universe. What was once a massive release has seemingly disappeared from public perception and we wanted to talk about it. Please note, this was recorded a few months ago, before the passing of James Caan. Just thought we should note why we did not wish him well when his name was brought up.
