History In The News

By OXYS Practical Defense
History in the News is a podcast dedicated to connecting modern events with historical context. Oftentimes, we hear commentary that is strictly opinion-based which does not provide the background for what is actually happening. We believe that history repeats itself and so we do our best to learn from the past to help people form well informed worldviews for the future.

The History of The Gun Free School Zones Act - Ep.7
What is the legislative background of one of the most critical school-safety acts in our history? What has the effect of this act been upon our schools?  Today, we are breaking down the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 and discussing it's implications and application. I hope to take a no-nonsense approach that is critical of the approach taken by both sides of the political spectrum in order to drill down on what will actually help stop this wave of unfortunate events.  We also take the time to recognize the heroic actions of Jacob Albarado who was the key player in ending the mass shooting in Uvalde, TX.  Here are the resources for this episode: Dads spend time in Louisiana high school after 23 students were arrested in string of violence - CBS News Percentage of public schools with security staff present at least once a week, and percentage with security staff routinely carrying a firearm, by selected school characteristics: 2005–06 through 2017-18 Weapons at School - FindLaw S.2070 - 101st Congress (1989-1990): Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 | | Library of Congress
