Winning Cures All

Winning Cures All

Last week we discussed whether or not the Pack was back on track, and the week three win against the San Francisco 49ers may have confirmed just that. Packers fans should RELAX until they prove us otherwise. That week one debacle against the Saints is not what this football team is all about. Over the years, the Niners have been the kryptonite for Green Bay, and it sure was nice to get that monkey off our back despite the refs' best efforts to gift San Francisco that game. Most importantly, the Packers overcame adversity, and they dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. It's still shocking that we won against a physical team in the trenches, something we haven't been able to say for many years.

The highlight of the night beyond the 37 seconds of glory was our young offensive line. The unit stepped up and protected our future hall of fame quarterback against one of the better front 7's in all of football. Yosh and Josh both deserve game balls. Rookie CB Eric Stokes got his first start at outside cornerback and did not disappoint. We're still Stoked for Stokes! Another surprise was our run defense. Tyler Lancaster and Dean Lowry played solid games, and Devondre Campbell may be the defensive MVP for the Packers through the first three games. Why TJ Slayton isn't getting more snaps is still a mystery.

Joe Barry has clearly made adjustments, and the results are showing up on the field. We are getting more pressure, and guys are flying around. Now, if we could only get Rashan Gary to finish, we may be OK after learning Za'Darius Smith will now be out until late in the season due to back surgery. We still want to know what happened to his damn back this offseason.

Our special teams still have a lot of work to do, but they are better than we have had in recent years. Corey Bojorquez is a stud (Insert Dex's voice), and Kylin Hill is a legit Kick Returner man that should take one to the house for us this season at some point. Unfortunately,  Amari Rodgers struggles to adjust to the NFL game and is maybe a year away from being a significant contributor to this football team.

We all believe the Packers should win in Week 4, but they cannot take this Steelers football team lightly. TJ Watt is a game wrecker, and Mike Tomlin is one of the better coaches in this league. They will come to Lambeau ready to play. Let's bring the energy and get that 3rd W of the season. Don't forget to listen and share the podcast with your fellow Packer fans; we greatly appreciate the support. GO PACK GO!

Pack Back On Track

Pack Back On Track

The Packers got a must-needed win on Monday Night Football against a feisty division opponent in the Detroit Lions. We saw glimpses of the MVP version of Aaron Rodgers, and it's safe to say we need to RELAX a little bit and this team gel and find their groove in this 2021 season.

We got back to our identity and ran the damn ball with Aaron Jones reaching paydirt four times on the day. Kevin King is still Kevin King, but we saw the future coming into focus with rookie Eric Stokes getting his opportunity to play significant snaps outside the CB2. King was still on the field 98% of the snaps, but they experimented with him in the slot and sat Chandon Sullivan for most of the night. We talked about potentially giving Richard Sherman a call, who may be an excellent addition to that cornerback room to find a way to utilize his skill set, which isn't a perfect fit for the current defensive scheme. If anything, he's better than Kevin King and could be a mentor to the young guys.

The run defense held Deandre Swift and Jamaal Williams under a hundred yards rushing, and new linebacker Devondre Campbell played some hell of a game. However, if we want to continue improving against the run, we need more TJ Slayton and a lot less Dean Lowry and Tyler Lancaster inside with Kenny Clark. We aren't convinced Joe Barry is the guy, but we all agree we need to be a little more patient with this transition on defense.

Kylin Hill and Corey Bojorquez have given our Special Teams a much-needed boost, and we need to see a lot more from Amari Rodgers if we want to take it to another level. Right now, the rookie wide receiver from Clemson looks timid and is giving us nothing in the punt return game. In addition, another disappointing high draft pick Jace Sternberger has been cut and is no longer a part of the team as the Seahawks have picked him up and placed him on their practice squad.

Up next, we have yet another road game against the San Francisco 49ers. We break down matchups to watch and what to expect against this conference foe. Hopefully, the Packers can build on their 2nd half against the Lions and get another W in Cali on Sunday Night. GO PACK GO!

No Pack No!

No Pack No!

In this episode, the guys break down the debacle in Week 1 for the Green Bay Packers. The team didn't show up to play the New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville, and the overall effort from Aaron Rodgers on down was dreadful. We searched hard for some bright spots in this game, and only a couple emerged. Elton Jenkins may be the Packer's best player after a stellar start at LT in place of the injured All-Pro LT in David Bakhtiari. The new punter Corey Bojorquez was solid in his debut, much to the delight of Dexter, and Rashan Gary was one of the few players that played with any energy and heart against the Saints.

However, a couple of things are clear this defense is still bad. First, they replaced Kirksey with Campbell and brought in a new DC that has never been successful in the NFL and expected different results. New chef, same nasty ingredients. Dean Lowry and Tyler Lancaster are not starting-caliber players. Second, our middle linebackers have been bad for longer than we care to remember. Something has to change, or we will continue to get torched by good teams, and good luck winning in the playoffs. On Monday night, this team has to get back to its identity and run the ball against the Lions. If they do that, they should win, and they should win big! With San Francisco and the Steelers up after Detroit, we need to get right and fast, or this season can be over before we know it.

Give it a listen, and let us know what you think!

Brett is a Bojorquez

Brett is a Bojorquez

The fellas break down the Packers' 53 man roster preview the Week 1 matchup with Saints in Jacksonville this week. We break down the key matchups and give our bold predictions for the game. Question for all you Packer Backers out there. Do you feel better about Green Bay's quarterback situation after watching Jordan Love play this preseason? The guys offer their takes on Love and whether or not they believe he will be ready to be QB1 next season if Rodgers leaves Titletown.  This year definitely has a "Last Dance" vibe, and hopefully, that urgency can carry over to the field for the players. This is as talented a roster we have seen in Green Bay since they last won the Super Bowl; we can only hope they can take advantage and bring the Lombardi Trophy back home where it belongs. Oh, and Dex might be a little excited about our new punter Corey Bojorquez. GO PACK GO!

Tainted Love

Tainted Love

In the latest episode of the Packer Backer Podcast, the fellas breakdown Family Night and Preseason Game #1 for the Packers. Jordan Love flashed a lot of talent and potential under center while also displaying his rawness as a QB. His decision-making was good, but there were lapses in judgment that could prove costly against first-team defenders in the NFL.

Josh Jackson needs help, and I'm not sure the Packers can provide it. The Cornerback was torched all night by the likes of Chris Conley, and that doesn't bode well for the former 2nd Rd pick now seemingly fighting to secure a spot on this Green Bay roster. As bad as Jackson played, the offensive line and Special Teams were just as bad against the Texans, which is disappointing considering the buzz around both units during the offseason.

Jordan Love got dinged up in the game and won't be practicing on Monday for the Packers. If he were to miss the preseason game against the Jets, that could be detrimental to the growth of the young QB, and the Packers would then be looking to bring in another QB. Maybe Blake Bortles or Jake Dolegala could return to play alongside Kurt Benkert against the Jets with the MVP Aaron Rodgers set to sit the entire preseason.

Green Bay Isn't a Vacation Destination

Green Bay Isn't a Vacation Destination

You better book your tickets today because it's football season, and during football season, Green Bay is a vacation destination!

In this episode, the guys address all the Aaron Rodgers drama and whether or not the MVP's recent press conference makes them view the Packers front office any differently. It's becoming more clear that Gutey is the guy that Rodgers hates at 1265 Lombardi Ave. Can Gutey and Murphy fix this "professional" relationship in one season? Then, moving past all the drama, the guys take a deep dive into players and position groups they're excited to watch in camp this Summer. The Packers have a deep and talented roster, so some good players may not make this team. Due to the depth on this roster, the fellas name a few players that may be surprise cuts by the end of this training camp.

There are a couple of new faces in Titletown, like Dennis Kelly and De'Vondre Campbell and one old friend back on the field in Randall Cobb. The pads go on this week, so we will learn a lot about some of these young players and also what this defense will look like under the leadership of defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Speaking of the defense, players seem to be pretty excited about the high-energy approach of the new DC. Rookie 1st Rd. Pick Eric Stokes is learning fast that Tae and Rodgers are just different. Overall, the Packer Backer Podcast is excited about the potential of this defense if they play with energy, improve in the run game and take the ball away more. Pettine's defense wasn't bad, but we all feel Top 5 is the potential for this unit under Barry.

The offensive line is starting to look like a strength of this team, especially when they get All-Pro Left Tackle David Bakhtiari back from his knee injury. Rookie Center Josh Myers is earning praises from the MVP veteran QB early in camp, and Elton Jenkins continues to play wherever, whenever on the oline at an elite level. Elton Jenkins may be Gutey's best draft pick to date.

Football season is here! GO PACK GO!

MVP Draft Drama

MVP Draft Drama

In this episode, the guys talk about the Aaron Rodgers drama that surfaced before the draft, thanks to No Source Schefter. What impact does the Rodgers drama started by Adam Schefter have on other players like Davante Adams and potential free agents that may or may not want to play for the Packers without Aaron Rodgers? Can Brian Gutekunst and Mark Murphey fix this thing? If not, what trade destinations make the most sense for the MVP QB? Former players like AJ Hawk and James Jones believe it's fixable, and they also refute the reports that Rodgers wants Gutey fired.

Overall, there were some clear trends in the 2021 NFL Draft for the Packers. Gutey filled needs with athletic and versatile football players, especially on the offensive line. We give complete breakdowns of all nine draft picks and the UDFAs that have signed. What QB's will the Packers be bringing in for camp? Because right now, we only have Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers under contract at the position, and the latter is unhappy. Listen to get caught up on the current state of the Green Bay Packers. Happy League New Year!

Happy League New Year!

Sorry Packer fans, Gutey, and company have been quiet and prioritized resigning and restructuring their own guys so far in a soft free agency market. Honestly, who would you'd rather have on the roster right now. Aaron Jones or JJ Watt? The guys say, Jones all day. Speaking of Jones, his new deal was a pleasant surprise. It's team-friendly and gives the Packers a dynamic 1-2 Thunder and Lightening combo at the running back position, with AJ Dillon now taking over the #2 role in Green Bay. You hate to lose an All-Pro center like Corey Linsley, but the Packers are in good shape on the offensive line. They have internal replacement candidates like Lucas Patrick or Elton Jenkins, and we expect the 2020 draft class to make contributions for this team, especially the trio of offensive lineman. It may not count as a free agent signing, but the Preston Smith restructure is genius. All in all, it feels like the Packers are comfortable building and moving this team forward as it's currently assembled, and that signals this may be the last year for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. The next few weeks will be telling and exciting as we get ready for the 2021 NFL Draft, where the Packers have a total of 10 picks. We all give our Top 5 prospects for the Packers at pick 29 and break down the impact those players can have on this football team. Go Pack Go!

Watt's the Deal?

Watt's the Deal?

The NFL has finally given teams a little more clarity on the status of the 2021 salary cap, and the guys discuss what the recent cuts of guys like Kirksey and Wagner mean for Green Bay and what to expect from Gutey and Russ Ball moving forward. We breakdown the impact of extension for guys like Rodgers and Adams, and candidates on the roster make sense for restructuring. What is the chance JJ Watt returns home for a chance to play for a Super Bowl with the Packers? Will going all-in for a guy like JJ impact our chances for extending players like Jaire Alexander in the next couple of years? Is it worth it? We debate the hire of Joe Barry as defensive coordinator and what that means for the GB defense and guys like Preston Smith moving forward. The 2021 NFL Draft is loaded with elite talent and at positions of need for the Packers. We breakdown some of our favorite rd 1 prospects and much more!

Where Do the Packers Go from Here?

Where Do the Packers Go from Here?

In this episode, the guys reflect on how they're feeling a couple of weeks removed from the NFC Championship loss to the Bucs. Who should shoulder the blame for the loss? Was it Coach LaFleur? Mike Pettine? Aaron Rodgers? We discuss the various Defensive Coordinator candidates (*Pro Tip: It wasn't Joe Barry!) and Maurice Drayton's hire as the Special Teams coach, and the impact he can have on that porous unit. What do the Packers do with Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love? Should they trade, restructure, or extend the league MVP and continue to make the 1st round pick sit on the bench? Gutey will have to make some tough decisions on some of the Packer's best players this offseason due to the cap situation. Some big-name players will no longer be on the roster in 2021 due to the impact of COVID-19 on the salary cap. For this reason, the 2021 draft and finding bargains in free agency will be critical to the Packer's success in 2021.  If this team expects to compete for the NFC Championship and make a run at another Super Bowl, Gutey and Russ Ball need to work some magic this offseason.

A Trip Down Memory Lane : Packers 2020 Regular Season Recap

A Trip Down Memory Lane : Packers 2020 Regular Season Recap

In this episode, the guys take a trip down memory lane, recapping an incredible 2020 regular season for the Packers. Back to back 13-3 seasons, the Matt LaFleur era in Titletown is off to a historic start. Aaron Rodgers is 1-3 in NFC Championship games in his career, and he has repeatedly mentioned that he would love to play one of those games at Lambeau. Well, Mr. MVP, you have your wish. The Super Bowl now runs through the Frozen Tundra.

In episode 6, we debate our biggest disappointments and surprises during the season. We discuss whether or not Jaire Alexander, Robert Tonyan, and Elton Jenkins got snubbed in the All-Pro voting and why the hell is the 2nd TE spot empty? We all believe this team can win the Super Bowl, and we hope they do it for the injured All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari and vets like Snacks Harrison. One thing is clear; Aaron Rodgers has a shot to bail out Gutey for not getting him any weapons in the offseason. Devin Funchess could’ve been that guy, but we will never know… Ultimately, the jury is still out on whether Gutey made the right decision to draft a bunch of guys that aren’t helping the team make a Super Bowl run right now.

The Packer defense finished the season as a top 10 scoring defense, so should the Packers still be looking to replace Mike Pettine? Will his tendency to call soft coverages in critical situations hurt the Packers in the playoffs? What are your biggest concerns for this team entering the playoffs? Can the 6,000+ fans in the Divisional Round help restore the home-field advantage at Lambeau beyond just the weather? Please tune in to the latest episode of the Packer Backer Podcast, where we discuss all these topics before Wildcard weekend. Go Pack Go!!!

Nobody Got Swagger Like Billy Turner

Heading into Week 11, the guys give their takes on what to expect against an excellent Indianapolis Colts football team. We discuss our biggest surprises and disappointments so far this season. Is it time for Mike Pettine to be fired? Is his replacement already in the building? Does David Bakhtiari's extension mean that Aaron Rodger will finish out his current contract in Green Bay? What other big-name players will and should be cut this offseason? Will the Packers find a way to "Bring Their Own Juice" and regain their home-field advantage at Lambeau Field? And can this team realistically compete for Super Bowl with one of the worst run defenses in the NFL? Our panel addresses all these questions and much more in this latest episode of the Packer Backer Podcast. GO PACK GO!
