S2 E8: Kingdom of Archers
iPads with Retina Display hit the target for Bhutan’s archers
Bhutan’s national sport is archery. Even if you don’t listen to this episode, you’ve learnt something for your next pub quiz. The issue for Bhutan (and their lovely royal family) is that their traditional form of archery (you know, just pissed lads in the park shooting arrows from bamboo bows) is under threat from the modern and more popular Olympic version. We solve their issues via our review of Kingdom of Archers on this episode of the podcast.

S2 E7: The Bad Boy of Bowling
Dick & Juanita’s Son is Bowling’s Bad Boy
You know Pete from his viral YouTube clip. You’ll love him after listening to this. Dick and Juanita’s boy is God’s gift to podcast sports documentary reviewers (so, just us), with his cool shades, ten pin bowling strikes and constant chops of his crotch (which may or may not have been trademark infringement. CC Joe Burns.) One of our favourites yet.

S2 E6: Screwball
Oddballs get Screwballed with the A-Roid
Screwball is like all the baseball documentaries we’ve reviewed - it’s about doping. And god it’s strange. Strange enough to be kind of good. Join us as we try to untangle this myriad of idiots managing injecting themselves with performance enhancers. Well done to the child actors though (yes, there’s child actors too.)
Watch Screwball here
S2 E5: Head Above Water
Cody Simpson presents: Head Above Water (ft Flo Rida)
We’re proud of this episode. Mainly because we got 30 odd minutes of chat out of Head Above Water. It’s a PR piece for Swimming Australia. Or maybe just for Cody Simpson (shout out to Flo Rida.) What it did do was direct us to the 1996 dark comedy of the same name with Cam Diaz and Billy Zane, Avril’s hit song, and Cody’s back catalog. See, life always gives you a silver lining. Kind of.

S2 E4: Drive to Survive
God-ness gracious, great balls of F1re
Drive to Survive is a bloody good documentary series. In fact, all F1 spots are. We focus in on ep 9 of season 3, where Romain Grosjean gets lit on fire and Sergio Perez uses God’s power to win a car race. It’s bloody action packed, let us tell you that for free (the ep that is, this podcast is just two drunk men rambling for 30 minutes.) Come for the analysis, stay for our stories about car crashes. This one is a must.

S2 E3: Last Chance U: Laney
Last Chance U Get To Yell Violently
Last Chance U follows junior college football teams doing it the hard way. Laney College, in Oakland, features in their fifth series. We watched episode one. These boys are very skilled. They also do it very tough. They make us realise that we’re pretty pathetic. Take this journey of discovery with us. Also, American Football is just a big game of bullshit isn’t it?

S2 E2: Pumping Iron
The muscles in Pumping Iron make Cal sick
Bodybuilding in the 70’s was wild and Arnie was king. Pumping Iron (i.e. Arnie’s PR piece) takes us behind the Mr Universe and Mr Olympia scene where there’s pranks, dumb dumbs, and average joes going wild. It makes Cal queasy. Steroids also come up.
Also, click here to watch Pumping Iron
S2 E1: Tiger
Tiger crashed his car because of this, no doubt
Tiger gets in another mysterious car accident months after this gossip style docco gets released? We’re not buying it and you shouldn’t be selling it. We dissect the 2021 release of ‘Tiger,’ which focuses on the golfing icon without ever really speaking to the golfing icon. Go figure!
S1 Finale: The Christmas Party
So this is Christmas. And what have you done? Nothing? Again? Well, we reviewed 20 Sports Documentaries throughout 2020 and revisited our top 5 during a messy Christmas party. Also, find out who was put on a performance plan (or fired), who was employee of the year and of course, who got invited to the prestigious Friday, nay CHRISTMAS drinks.

S1 E20: Diego Maradona
RIP Maradona. RIP 2020.
Diego Maradona is dead and we’re in mourning. Please give us time to grieve (it’s also our last ep for 2020).
Don’t do drugs, kids.

S1 E19: Tyson
Mike Tyson is a mad man
Well, this one was a doozy. Tyson (2008) is the sports documentary in focus and to be perfectly honest, it’s bloody confronting. The docco is an hour and a half of Iron Mike’s monologue and it leaves you scratching your head. From juvie, to stardom, to women, to drugs, to prison, to fighting for pay cheques, Mike’s had the life that makes you think ‘what if?’

S1 E18: Free Solo
Free Solo’ing El Capitan? Not for us, thanks
Alex Honnold can climb really high mountains without ropes and we are impressed. We wouldn’t do it, personally, but you’ve got to admire the man for going up El Capitan ‘Free Solo’ with just his film crew there to watch him potentially die. We unpack what it takes to be that crazy and what it would be like to be Sanni (congrats by the way.)

S1 E17: Losers: The 72nd Hole
Jean loses the golfing plot and Craig Parry loves it
Netflix’s Docuseries ‘Losers’ takes our focus as we look at their '72nd Hole' episode, featuring French golfer Jean Van De Velde’s epic choke at the 1999 British Open. We play the final hole at Carnoustie with Jean and reflect on his sublime character to overcome adversity. Plus, this one features a Part Time Sport first.

S1 E15: Senna
F1, Imola, and Senna: The Sid Watkins Story
Our sports documentary for this week is ‘Senna,’ which looks at the life of F1 great and Brazilian star Ayrton Senna. It’s an emotional rollercoaster - especially in the lead-up to Imola in 2020 - but it’s also one of the best doccos we’ve ever watched. Respect to Senna, respect to F1, respect to Dr Sid, and we’re glad you’re dead Jean-Marie.

S1 E14: The Merge
The AFL Merge of Fitzroy, Brisbane and Nauru
Australian Rules Football in the 80’s and 90’s wasn’t the relative cash cow it is today, so like all good executives, the AFL big wigs were looking for scapegoats and blood. Many struggling teams were put under the ‘merge’ microscope, but it was Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears that ultimately made the unholy matrimony. This is the story of how they became the Brisbane Lions (thanks Nauru.)

S1 E13: No No: A Dockumentary
Yes Yes to No No: A Dockumentary
Dock Ellis is famous for throwing a no-hitter while high on LSD, but we find out there’s more to the man than being ‘high as a Georgia pine.’ A great pitcher in his own right, Ellis helped change the face of Baseball during the 60’s, 70’s and beyond. This one goes full circle (there’s probably a baseball pun here but we’re not big enough fans.)

S1 E12: Nature Boy
Nature Boy Ric Flair wrestles beers, women, and Daddy issues
‘Nature Boy’ tells the life story of wrestler Ric Flair and it’s fair to say he’s had an eventful one. Parent issues, alter egos, stardom, alcoholism, fatherhood fails, and more, this is the type of sports documentary that throws everything at you. We live out our wrestling nostalgia as we track the life of the man that says ‘WOO’ alot.

S1 E11: Hoop Dreams
Livin’ the Hoop Dreams (of Bo and Curtis)
Bo and Curtis aren’t the main characters of hit 1994 basketball documentary ‘Hoop Dreams,’ but my word they made an impression on us. We dissect families living vicariously through William Gates and Arthur Agee, big-fish-in-little-pond Coach Pingatore, and injury culling more promising careers. Revisit this classic documentary to see 80’s and 90’s basketball through race, class, and money.
S1 E10: Pacific Warriors
Ugly Rugby and KFC for these Pacific Warriors
The biggest force in World Rugby isn’t the all conquering All Blacks, but three small Pacific Island nations that consistently punch above their weight (mainly thanks to KFC.) In our sports documentary review of Ruby Union’s ‘Pacific Warriors,’ we discover the international rugby stories of Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa and unravel how their (handsome) players have made rugby union great - albeit not while playing for their own nations
S1 E9: A Sunday in Hell
Cycling through a Sunday in Hell
As a sports documentary filmed in 1976, ‘A Sunday in Hell’ is a beautiful change up from the modern classics. We review this epic film as it profiles the 1976 Paris-Roubaix cycling race that is famous for its stage nicknamed ‘Hell.’ The narrator hates the French, protestors make their presence felt (because France), and the epic scenery and soundtrack make this a very worthwhile watch.

S1 E8: Year of the Scab
It’s your year, NFL Scabs
Our sports documentary this week is ESPN 30 for 30’s ‘Year of the Scab’ focusing on the 1987 NFL player strike for free agency. Fall in love with the Scabskins, boo the fickle fans and nasty owners, but stay for the way the scabs are treated in the aftermath of the 1987 season. Justice for Tony!

S1 E7: Fire in Babylon
Cricket’s rasta men bounce through Babylon
Profiling the West Indies cricket team of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, sports documentary ‘Fire in Babylon’ takes us on some bloody journey. The cricket, the characters, the music, and the groundsmen capture our hearts as we dissect not just why this team was great for cricket, but for the world. Big shout out to Bunny Wailer you mad, beautiful man. RASTAFARIIIIIIII

S1 E6: Andy Murray: Resurfacing
Andy Murray and his metal tennis hip
‘Andy Murray: Resurfacing’ makes you appreciate Andy Murray. As he returns to grand slams via the 2020 US Open of Tennis, we think about Shane and the support team, how annoying/amazing he can be on a daily basis, whether his reconditioning specialist was worth the money, and if it’s normal for tennis players to have 5 ex-coaches. A sports documentary work watching. https://www.parttimesport.com
S1 E5: Derby Days: Lombardia
Atalanta and Brescia derby for Lombardy football and Casoncelli supremacy (pota)
Copa90’s Derby Days Lombardia ‘900 Years of Hate’ takes center stage in this week's pod, as we enjoy the passion of Italians when it comes to pasta. They also get fired up over football sometimes, with Il Boccia and Mazzone driving that with a vengeance. A timely listen with Atalanta’s 2020 Champions League run in the books. https://www.parttimesport.com
S1 E4: Hit It Hard
Golf’s rebel on sipping, gripping, and ripping
John Daly’s ‘Hit It Hard’ is our sports documentary this week - golf, cigarettes, chocolate, beers - all the big topics are covered. The man lives by the mantra of grip it and rip it, so we do our darndest to do the same as we track the life of a man who lives by no one’s code but his own (and ‘Hollywood’ Henderson’s.)
S1 E3: Of Miracles and Men
Ice Hockey Miracles with our Russian Comrades
‘Of Miracles and Men’ is our sports documentary this week - god we love Soviet Russia. It is just the gift that keeps on giving. Not to its people, obviously, but as far as humour goes they are gold, gold, gold (BLIP). In this ep, we chart the rise, fall, and rise of Russian ice hockey through three men - Tarasov, Tikhonov, Fetisov. This is ‘Of Miracles and Men’. https://www.parttimesport.com/
S1 E2: I Hate Christian Laettner
Basketball nerds hate Christian Laettner
‘I Hate Christian Laettner’ is a strong name for a sports documentary, especially considering the bloke never really did anything wrong. Besides play for Duke. Lots of people hate Duke. We chat through the five prongs of Laettner and determine if the hatred is warranted (our opinions on this stuff matters) https://www.parttimesport.com/
S1 E1: The Battered Bastards of Baseball
Battered Bastards of Baseball go Bing
The Battered Bastards of Baseball serves as our sports documentary of choice as we celebrate the return of Major League Baseball this week. Kurt’s Dad Bing Russell (you’ll know them both from the 1979 film Elvis) takes on organized baseball - and my word they don’t like it. It’s the little guys vs the big leagues but the little guys smoke and drink a lot. Very Part Time. https://www.parttimesport.com/
