Passages Epilogue: One Year Later

Passages Epilogue: One Year Later

On May 1st, 2020, I started the Passages podcast. What began as a hobby, an adventure, and a risk turned out to be one of the greatest gifts I never could have anticipated. Exactly one year later, our podcast has hit over 10,000 downloads, our community has peaked over 900 strong, our team has made moves in our own lives and careers that we've only ever dreamed of, and you - YOU - are one year braver, brighter, and more brilliant simply because you've showed up every day as your own, true self.

In this episode, cheesy as it may be, I took the opportunity to sit down and reflect on what this last year has meant, both as a letter of gratitude to those who joined me in this project AND as my own... passage. I also share an exciting, transformative update with you all: with a new career chapter taking shape, I've made the decision to hit pause on this podcast for the time being. For that reason, we are considering this the epilogue, and the finale (for now). Who knows — maybe we'll meet again in this way soon. But until then, I'm excited to embrace this next chapter for everything it holds, watch as the world we once loved re-opens day by day, and look ahead to everything waiting for us on the other side.

I hope you enjoy this reflective episode and update. If you'd like to stay connected, you can always find me on Instagram @chloebelangia. Thank you for being here, friend. Cheers to young professionalism and everything it's taught and continues to teach us along the way.

49: Moving Coasts, Switching Industries, and Staying Competitive Outside Your Comfort Zone: How to Navigate Multiple Career Moves at Once, ft. Drew Sutton

Today’s episode is such a special one for me! I invited my boyfriend, Drew Sutton, to share his career story and the major changes he’s made in only a few short years. In 2019, I made the decision to move to California, which presented the opportunity for Drew to consider finding a new role out west, too. Through a series of very intentional strategies, in 2020, Drew was able to transition from a small finance firm in Atlanta, Georgia to a highly competitive sales role for Mulesoft/Salesforce in San Francisco, California. Navigating three pivots all at once took a lot of preparation and confidence but (as Drew found out) wasn’t impossible. In today’s episode, I wanted to bring Drew on to walk through the exact steps he took to make these moves and launch a new career, just in case any of you are looking to switch up your career paths in major ways as well.

Our conversation breaks down his story into three distinct pivots:

1) Pivoting industries from finance to sale— why was sales the right move for him, and how did he bridge gaps in his resume to land the role without prior experience?

2) Pivoting from a small firm to a major corporation— what are the pros and cons of both types of companies, and how did he position his smaller-brand experience as competitive for a company like Salesforce?

3) Pivoting from Georgia to California— real talk: how did he feel about moving across the country, what has he learned since, and what advice would he share with anyone else looking to make unfamiliar moves to follow something they believe in?

If you’re interested in a major career change, but lacking the confidence to own that such a change is *possible*, this episode is for YOU.

48: How to Find & Land Your Dream Internship, ft. Alexandra Foote: Microsoft Product Manager, Incoming Harvard MBA Candidate, and Tech Internship Coach

Gaining work experience while still in college through short-term internship programs is one of the best ways to set yourself up for early career success. In today’s episode, I sat down with internship coach, Alexandra Foote, to unlock her secrets to landing top internships in and outside of the tech industry. With experience interning at Google, Bank of America, and Microsoft (twice!), Alex was able to land her dream role—and an immediate promotion—in product management at Microsoft right after gradation. Inspired by the impact these internships had on her early career moves, Alex is now passionate about turning around and offering helpful resources and 1:1 coaching to other college students looking to land their dream internships. In addition to a blossoming career in technology and computer science, Alex is also an incoming MBA candidate at Harvard Business School, having been accepted to HBS’ 2+2 program.

Today’s episode covers an array of frequently asked questions on all things internships:

  • Why are internships important?
  • Before applying, how do you determine the right internships to go after?
  • How can you stand out in the application and interview process?
  • If you have multiple offers on the table, how do you decide?
  • How do you make the most of short-term work experiences?
  • And so much more…

47: From PR Intern to Booked-Out Freelancer: How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Reroute Your Early Career, ft. Delaney Vetter

47: From PR Intern to Booked-Out Freelancer: How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome and Reroute Your Early Career, ft. Delaney Vetter

Delaney Vetter, like countless other young professionals, graduated from college in the spring of 2020—a less-than-ideal job market awaiting her on the other side. She’d done everything right through college, landing internships and building connections in her desired field of work, but as luck and life would have it, the full-time job options just weren’t there. Yet by remaining open, leveraging her network, and offering skills to those who needed her help, Delaney managed to “accidentally” start and scale a fully-booked freelance business as a communications consultant—bypassing what she thought her early career would look like in lieu for a new path she never saw coming.

In this episode, Delaney peels back the curtain on what graduating and pivoting into life as a young freelancer really looked like. She shares a refreshing message of empathy to the 2020 and 2021 graduating classes, the real-talk behind how and why she gave up the job hunt in lieu of freelancing, what running a business at her age has taught her about owning success when you’re young, and advice she’s picked up for other aspiring online business owners. If you’re feeling the weight of the job hunt, looking to feel less alone during a remote graduation season, or curious in any capacity on the life and work of a full-time freelancer, this episode is for you.

46: The Busy Student’s Survival Guide to (Authentic) Self Care, ft. Denise Arco, Margot Salgado, and Nha Truong of The Babes Who Study

Denise Arco, Margot Salgado, and Nha Truong are first-generation graduate students pursuing psychology degrees in various forms, passionate about dismantling "The Grind" and promoting a holistic balanced lifestyle. In the midst of navigating their own educational journeys, the trio of friends joined forces to launch The Babes Who Study, a community and digital brand aimed at providing mentorship, empowerment, and coffee-inspired inspo to other young professional women walking a similar path. Having followed their community for quite some time now, I highly encourage you to give them a follow over @thebabeswhostudy on Instagram, while we dive into today’s episode.

In this conversation, I pick Denise, Margot, and Nah’s brains on all things holistic wellbeing—through the lens of young professionalism and finding personal forms of self-care as busy students. What is their perception of wellness and how has it evolved as they’ve studied psychology on their own? What are their personal favorite forms of self-care (hint: it’s not what you’d think)? How do they reconnect with themselves and their souls, and what advice do they have for any spring students rounding out the last few weeks of the semester?

These friends were such a joy to bring on the podcast and I know you’ll find their energy so contagious. If you loved listening in, let us know over @thepassagesproject on Instagram.

45: Early Career Q&A, Part Two: Handling Feedback, Managing Up, Asking for a Promotion, and More, ft. Ellie Peterson

Welcome back! In part two of our early career Q&A, we pick right back up where we left off: talking all things career advancement for those of you facing early conversations on promotions, change, or leaving your full-time role. As young professionals ourselves, we’re peeling back the curtain behind tough conversations with managers, giving and receiving feedback, and how to assess whether it’s the right time to ask for a promotion.

In this episode, we answer questions submitted by YOU, including:

  • How do we receive negative feedback?
  • Advice for managing up: if you don’t feel well supported by your manager, how can you provide that feedback in a respectful way?
  • When is it time to think about a change?
  • Is it appropriate to discuss opportunities for growth with your team?
  • What have conversations around promotions looked like for us?
  • Have we ever been denied a raise?
  • And more…

If you haven't yet listened to part one of our two-part Q&A series, we highly encourage you to listen to last week’s episode, where we discuss early career negotiation, setting work-life boundaries, managing your inbox, and other areas for development when you’re starting in a new role. If you have anything to share with our community about what we discuss in today’s show, send us a DM over on Instagram—we’d love to know what you think!

44: Early Career Q&A, Part One: Negotiation, Setting Boundaries, Managing Your Inbox, and More, ft. Ellie Peterson

Knowing many of you may be facing career advancement opportunities around this time of year—accepting a new role, negotiating for a promotion, or getting your footing in an early career transition—we thought it’d be helpful to take some time answering your questions and sharing our candid experiences as early professionals in the full-time working world. In part one of two, Chloe chats with Ellie Peterson, also a member of The Passages Project team, about strategies she’s leveraged to feel confident establishing and growing professionally from day one.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Did we negotiate for raises for our entry-level positions?
  • When is it okay to take a pay-cut?
  • How can you earn your manager’s trust as early as possible?
  • How can you respectfully establish work life balance boundaries while still demonstrating you are willing to work hard?
  • How do we organize our weekly to-do lists, inboxes, and calendars?
  • And (to be continued)...

Stay tuned for part two next week, when we discuss giving and receiving feedback, partnering with your manager to improve in your role, when it’s time for a promotion, and when it’s time to leave.

42: A Day in the Life of NYU PhD Candidate, Gabby Whiten: Finding the Intersection of Science, Communication, and Education

Gabby Whiten is a Ph.D. candidate at the NYU School of Medicine and freelance digital creative. Gabby attended UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad, where she uncovered a passion for scientific research and experimentation. Gabby began her Ph.D. program right out of college, determined to work at the intersection of science, communication, and education. Outside of her research, Gabby has a thriving presence on YouTube and Instagram, flexes her creative muscles servicing clients with graphic design work, and explores everything New York City has to offer.

In today's episode, I pick Gabby’s brain on the 101 of Ph.D. work: why and how she landed on the specific program and set of research she did, what a day-in-the-life of a Ph.D. student really looks like, and how she balances her full-time program with part-time hustles. 41: The Quest for Joy: How Artist and Entrepreneur, Megan Inderrieden, Went from Corporate to Creative Career

41: The Quest for Joy: How Artist and Entrepreneur, Megan Inderrieden, Went from Corporate to Creative Career

Megan Inderrieden is an artist, entrepreneur, founder of Atlanta-based co-working space The Reverie, and an absolute icon when it comes to letting go, chasing joy, and living a colorful life. Megan’s career started out like so many do: believing her path was meant to look just like the person next to her, filled with tough classes and even tougher work weeks. After reconnecting with her childhood passion for art when she was in college, Megan took up watercolor, announced her hobby to her Instagram followers, and accidentally grew herself into a small business called Painted Parcels. While balancing the corporate 9-5, Megan began hosting art shows and expanded her portfolio of work to serve a quickly growing roster of clients across the U.S. Hitting her breaking point and craving to step into all that life was calling her to pursue, everything changed in one day. Megan ended up walking away after only 6 months in the corporate world to pursue art full time, and of course, the rest was history.

In today’s episode, we walk through Megan’s story chapter by chapter: how her identity took shape when she was young, which chapters woke her up to who she was meant to become, and the exact steps she took to leave Corporate America behind and become her own boss. Embracing a creative life full force ahead is not for the faint of heart, but Megan’s instinct has taken her farther than she could’ve even dreamed. After running Painted Parcels and expanding her studio, Megan also launched a new venture, founding The Reverie, a female-focused coworking space in Atlanta, Georgia. These days, Megan’s still taking major steps forward, with a newly launched rebrand and so much more to come.

35: Leaning into Multiple Passions, Finding Your Momentum, and Choosing the Right First Company For You, ft. Dana Paulita Harmond

“Be known for trying.” When Dana Paulita Harmond graduated as a chemical and biomolecular engineer and launched her career in product development and innovation for Georgia Pacific, she was energized by the opportunity to embrace her fullest, analytical self. But at the same time as she’s honed her passion for engineering, and with the same level of passion, she’s spent hours outside of work pursuing an entirely different craft: launching a creative side business as a lifestyle blogger and content creator. Dana’s story and approach to her life and work embody the joy, passion, and reward that comes with engaging in all of her interests wholeheartedly. And her wisdom might shake you to your core.

In this episode, Chloe speaks with Dana about immigrating to the United States taught her about risk and work; how she’s found synergies in seemingly contradictory passions; the ways in which she’s approached making pivotal decisions through college and career; the importance of evaluating your first company’s culture; how she alleviates the tension of imposter syndrome; and so much more. If you’re considering taking on a new creative project, struggling to make peace with your multi-passionate identity, or generally curious about how an engineer and blogger like Dana truly does it ALL, this one's for you.

32: Getting Started as a Real Estate Agent & Advice for First-Time Home Buyers, with Catherine Ann McManus

32: Getting Started as a Real Estate Agent & Advice for First-Time Home Buyers, with Catherine Ann McManus

Catherine Ann McManus has taken a few pivots in her early career, and so far, her trust in herself is paying off. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in speech pathology and acceptance letters from grad schools she’d admired from afar, Catherine felt in her gut that following the path she’d set up for herself wasn’t the right one right away. Instead, she served and fundraised her way as a campus missionary with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) in Kansas. One day, on the phone with a good friend, Catherine got that same feeling: it was time for another change. Knowing her passion for relationship building and negotiating to improve others’ lives, Catherine decided to pursue a career in real estate. She dropped everything, moved to her hometown to study for her exam, and is now a licensed realtor in the Augusta, Georgia area. In her own words, she is “passionate about finding young people homes, and making the buying process as simple as possible.”

Catherine’s story illustrates the sense of purpose that comes with investing in your strengths, and we’re thrilled to welcome her on the Passages podcast today. In this episode, Chloe picks Catherine’s brain on all things real estate: from landing on this career, to the story of working with her very first client, and advice for first-time home buyers ready to take a major new step. If you’re curious about the path to real estate as a professional or prospective home buyer, this episode is for you!

31: Building a Disruptive, Inclusive Career in Copywriting and Advertising, ft. Award-Winning Writer & Founder of Oxford Comma Collective, Yessenia Downs

31: Building a Disruptive, Inclusive Career in Copywriting and Advertising, ft. Award-Winning Writer & Founder of Oxford Comma Collective, Yessenia Downs

Yessenia (Yessy) Downs has always been a writer. But as an English major at the University of Florida, she was encouraged to pursue one of two options: to make money as a lawyer or to not make money in the world of film. She chose law, and poured everything into the path. It was only after being accepted to law school and meeting practicing lawyers that Yessy realized the future ahead was not for her. With the help of a friend and an introduction to the Miami Ad School, Yessy discovered a third option: copywriting. She dove in again, this time with full confidence in the creative experiences waiting for her on the other side. Yessy now works as full-time copywriter, with a breadth of experience from some of world’s most respected brands and agencies. She has been awarded for her work in the industry and was named one of ADCOLOR’s 2020 Futures.

What I think makes Yessy a guest to remember is *both* her success in the industry and how she’s using her craft for good. As a bilingual daughter of immigrants, Yessy recognized the lack of true inclusion in the advertising industry from day one and decided to take matters into her own hands. In addition to her full time career, Yessy is making waves in advertising and brand strategy as the founder of Oxford Comma Collective, a full-service writing studio that partners writers of color with entrepreneurs of color to help them find and establish their brand voice. Yessy and her team are on a mission to employ and empower members of BIPIC, Queer, female and disabled communities with the power of words.

In today’s episode, Chloe speaks with Yessy to unpack her pursuit of copywriting, creativity and true inclusion in the advertising industry. Yessy shares what Miami Ad School was really like, her experience and advice for aspiring writers, and the hard truth behind what sets good creatives apart from great ones. The two also discuss tokenism versus inclusivity in advertising and the vision driving the Oxford Comma Collective forward. If you’re a writer, curious about the path of a professional in advertising, or passionate about amplifying every voice, this episode is for you.

30: Tips and Tricks to Growing Your Small Business Over Instagram, ft. Graphic Designer and Founder of Thanks for Everything, Mary Rosenzweig

30: Tips and Tricks to Growing Your Small Business Over Instagram, ft. Graphic Designer and Founder of Thanks for Everything, Mary Rosenzweig

It’s THE weekend (and year, let’s be honest) to celebrate small business—and more importantly, the owners and creative geniuses dedicating their lives to build them. That’s why today, we’re introducing you to a rising star in the design and stationary sector making serious moves in her local and surrounding market. Meet Mary Rosenzweig: the founder and graphic design whiz behind Thanks for Everything, a design shop specializing in custom buttons and other design-centric gifts and goods. From socially distanced game-days, to bachelorette parties, to teachers and nurses on the frontlines of this pandemic, Thanks for Everything has gifts through it all, and it’s Mary and her family behind the scenes. Graduating from UGA with a degree in journalism, entertainment, and media, Mary originally sought a career in social media and the sports industry, only to find herself drained by life in the corporate world. She paid close attention to aspects of her job that did excite her, and when one chapter closed, another in the field of design opened up. Mary uprooted her life and moved to Newport Beach, California to work in customer service for a small stationary shop she connected with over Instagram. In the midst of following her passions, Mary started her small business on the side, and as her market took off, her interest in a life of entrepreneurship grew with it. Now, Mary runs Thanks for Everything full-time, and we’re proud to celebrate her—and other incredible small business owners—today on the podcast.

In this episode, Chloe sits down with Mary to talk through her story and experience honing her craft and navigating the creative industry as a small business owner. Mary shares the good and bad of life in corporate versus life in a small shop; a behind-the-scenes take on the wedding and special events industry; how she found her niche, market, and voice by listening to her customers; and lessons for any business owner looking to build a loyal customer base over Instagram. In the spirit of #SmallBusinessSaturday and a year that took so many businesses through the worst, Mary’s story is one of resilience, unbridled creativity, and a true testament to the joy of serving people you love by doing what you love.

29: Standing Out From the Sidelines: How Sports Anchor & Reporter EmmaKate Few is Building Her Career in Broadcasting

EmmaKate Few grew up in a sports family, watching her two older brothers play football and baseball through college. Aiming to combine her love for sports, theater, and public speaking, she decided to pursue a career in sports broadcasting at Southern Methodist University (SMU), majoring in journalism and sport management. EmmaKate made her way into the athletic press department, becoming in-venue host for SMU football and basketball, freelancing for the XFL, interning at CBS 11, working at the AAC basketball tournament… and then, sports were cancelled. Despite graduating at the start of COVID-19, EmmaKate trusted in her passion for the field and put her all into the job search, eventually landing a role at KTAL (NBC 6/ Fox 33) in Shreveport, Louisiana as a Weekend Sports Anchor and Reporter. Though just getting started, EmmaKate is already making her mark in the industry, using her platform to cover meaningful stories of athletes on and off the field.

In today’s episode, I sit down with EmmaKate to better understand this tough but rewarding role in sports. We discuss the steps she took to land critical internships in college, advice for aspiring young broadcasters, a (real) Friday-night-lights in her life, and tips for presenting yourself professionally as a standout young reporter for a male-dominated industry. Enjoy!

28: Keys to True Connection, ft. Community Architect and Founder of Goddess Council, Cat Lantigua

After graduating from Florida International University with a degree in International Relations and Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Cat Lantigua picked up everything she knew about work, hustle, and purpose and moved her vibrant, Dominican-American soul to New York City. As an original intent to pursue a career the nonprofit sector fell out of alignment, and her total lack of community started to set in, Cat decided to take her experience with herself and others into her own hands. What started as dinner parties in her dining room for friends around town soon evolved into what’s now known as the Goddess Council: a community for women to make new friendships, participate in meaningful conversations, and heal collectively. Cat has since left her corporate role, moved out of the city, and now runs Goddess Council full-time as Community Architect. In 2020, Cat was recognized by Aerie as a Changemaker for her work with Goddess Council, and it’s an absolute joy to host her on Passages today.

In this episode, I ask Cat about her definition of wellbeing, her experience leading herself and other women towards nourishing and intentional community, lessons in courage, and the antidote to hustle culture. Cat is a voice of healing I know I, and many others, will need during this year and beyond, bringing inspiration, light, and conversations that matter to women and this world. Buckle up.

-------

About Cat: Cat Lantigua is a Dominican-American facilitator and community architect dedicated to building spaces that foster soul-centered conversations and connections. She is the Founder  and CEO at Goddess Council and host of the Chats with Cat podcast.

27: Former Fortune Magazine Journalist & Founder of The Profile, Polina Marinova Pompliano, On Telling Stories for a Living

27: Former Fortune Magazine Journalist & Founder of The Profile, Polina Marinova Pompliano, On Telling Stories for a Living

Since discovering the art of reporting at her high school newspaper, Polina Marinova Pompliano has built a name for herself as an accomplished journalist and entrepreneur. Polina graduated from the University of Georgia in 2013 with a degree in journalism and sociology, having experience as Editor-in-Chief of the school paper and internships at CNN and USA Today under her belt. Chasing a long-held dream to pursue journalism in New York City, Polina hustled through 16-hour workdays to turn her dreams into a reality, ultimately landing a role as a social media editor at Fortune Magazine. Polina worked her way up to reporting on entrepreneurship and eventually led daily curation of The Term Sheet, a must-read morning newsletter by Fortune on tech and venture capital. Along the way, Polina had also been hard at work building a newsletter dedicated solely to highlighting the profiles of interesting and successful people and companies. As readership and her pull to build The Profile into a broader media company grew, in March of 2020 (at the start of the pandemic), Polina took a leap of faith and quit her role at Fortune to pursue The Profile full-time.

In this week’s episode of Passages, I ask Polina about her journey studying and pursuing journalism, how she found her way to Fortune, her experience reporting on finance & venture capital (topics she initially knew nothing about), a day-in-the-life working for a major media publication, and lessons she’s learned from reporting on the greats. From aspiring journalists, to entrepreneurs, to anyone interested in the life and rise of a major media reporter, this episode was made for you.

26: Unlocking the STEM Grad School Experience, ft. Madysen Johnson & Natalie Ownby, Hosts of the Call Her Doctor Podcast

Are you considering a major, program, or path that sounds meaningful in theory but challenging in practice? From pursuing a STEM degree, to medical school, to PhD research programs, and more, there are so many incredibly important career opportunities for those interested in engineering and sciences. The endurance and productivity it takes to actualize those goals, though, can feel overwhelming. In today's episode, I sit down with my new friends Natalie Ownby and Madysen Johnson to demystify these paths, and motivate any of you eyeing them without the right resources to get there. Natalie and Madysen are lifelong friends who, after embarking on their own journeys through upper-level STEM degrees, realized a lack of representation and resources for women in their fields. They now host their own podcast, Call Her Doctor, and run mentorship blogs and programs to help women excel in graduate-level STEM programs. Natalie is currently a PhD student in electrical engineering at the University of Virginia, and Madysen is in med school at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

25: Identity, Grit, and Art: The Soulful Story of Singer-Songwriter, Raye Zaragoza

Raye Zaragoza is an award-winning singer-songwriter who Paste Magazine called “one of the most politically relevant artists in her genre.” First-generation Japanese-American on her mother’s side, indigenous on her father’s side, and raised in New York City, Raye shares her unique perspective and stories through songs that are both inspiring and thought-provoking. Her sophomore LP Woman In Color produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, First Aid Kit) is releasing today, October 23, 2020.  The folk album is an intimate, empowering exploration of Raye’s journey to feeling comfortable in her own skin and background. Writing about social issues comes naturally to Raye. "As a woman of color in America, social issues are things you deal with and see every day of your life," she says. "I write about my experience and oftentimes my existence has been laced with injustice." Raye’s modern-day protest music been featured on Billboard, Democracy Now!, and PopMatters. She has toured in support of Dispatch, Rising Appalachia, William Elliott Whitmore, Dar Williams, Donovan Woods, and many more.

In this episode, I sit down with Raye to discuss the early days of discovering art, how she hustled in the waitress & hosting scene to pursue music, her experience marrying her personal and professional identity to inform her career, how her vast multi-cultural identity has shaped her views on the world, and so much more. 24: It’s Voting Season! Nonpartisan Tips for Voting at the State & Local Level, ft. Founder of Branch Politics, Walter Ley

When Walter Ley stepped up to the ballot box for the very first time, he chose his vote for President, clicked next, and... froze. Page after page of state and local legislative options he'd never heard of clouded his mind. With little knowledge of what each of these positions meant, nevertheless who to vote for, Walter walked away from voting feeling defeated, uninformed, and uninspired. Years later, he's now on a mission to change that. Walter ended up leaving his early career in fintech to launch Branch Politics, a free, nonpartisan website that quickly and effectively informs Atlanta citizens on federal, state, and local candidates, to help you feel confident on election day. In today's episode, I sit down with Walter to learn more about the early, uncertain days of Branch, why being active and informed for elections at the state and local level matters, and digestible resources to help you do your research in time for November 3rd (even if you don't have access to Branch). Based in Los Angeles, Ilinca Sipos works full-time forming partnerships with e-commerce brands in the beauty and fashion industry for fintech start-up, Klarna. RARA is a mission-driven beauty lifestyle brand that marries self-care, beauty and self-development. As a Georgia Tech grad, yogi, and online retail wizard, Ilinca has so much to share with us about the realities of how she started and scaled her product-driven business to where it is today.

Today, we talk about:

  • The ideation process behind creating RARA CLUB and the concept of productive procrastination
  • The practical, not-so sexy parts of growing and scaling a product-driven business, and how to overcome challenges along the way
  • Why a mission-driven team is the most important path to success as an entrepreneur
  • How thinking of every task as one step in the process makes entrepreneurship less daunting
  • Hiring a team, building from constructive criticism, and learning to manage

Questions asked:

  • Why did you choose to move to LA and how has it affected your entrepreneurship journey?
  • What is RARA Club? Tell us all the details about the brand, mission, etc.
  • What did Day Zero of RARA CLUB look like?
  • What was the process of invention for your product?
  • What can you share about things that went wrong throughout the process and how you kept going?
  • How can someone overcome self-inflicted mental roadblocks when pursuing their dream?

And so much more!

16: “Financial wellness is self-care.” WTF is a 401(K) and Other Money Questions You’re Too Scared to Ask, ft. Tori Dunlap of Her First $100K

Tori Dunlap is a millennial money and career expert who founded her company Her First $100K, a financial education website which gives women resources to manage their money to fight the limitations of the patriarchy. Tori set a goal to save $100,000 by the time she was 25 and, when she achieved this goal early, quit her corporate marketing job to work full-time advocating for women’s financial rights. Her goal is to eliminate the narrative of shame and judgment surrounding female spending and teach women that they can take control of their money and achieve the finance wins they deserve. Tori is a nationally recognized finance expert whose work has been featured on Good Morning America, the New York Times, Forbes, the New York Magazine and more.

Today we talk about:

- The emotional and psychological side of our personal spending

- How financial systems in our society affect women; Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC); and LGBTQ+ members of our communities differently, and action-items to overcome these barriers (including actually learning what your 401K can do for you)

- Bringing financial stability under the “self-care” umbrella -- and prioritizing it as part of your personal wellness, in the same way as you do exercising or eating healthy foods

Questions asked:

- Where do behavioral psychology and personal finance intersect?

- How do finance barriers affect female-identifying, LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and other demographics uniquely?

- What are the most straightforward, important action-items you would give to young professionals in this stage?

- Where is the balance between actively prioritizing your finances but still ensuring that your self-worth is not dependent on how much you have in the bank?

- An aspect of entrepreneurship you couldn’t have predicted?

12: "Keep fear in the equation. Then do the math." The Power of Vulnerability in Leadership ft. Pooja Juvekar

12: "Keep fear in the equation. Then do the math." The Power of Vulnerability in Leadership ft. Pooja Juvekar

In Episode 12, I am joined by former Undergraduate Student Body President of Georgia Tech, Pooja Juveka. Raised to believe in her own ambition and capacity to cultivate community, Pooja started out at Georgia Tech wide eyed and open for whatever the student experience brought her way. As she leaned into student government after enjoying high school student council, Pooja quickly found her people, her place, and her platform to impact. In this conversation, I sat down with Pooja and asked her for some real talk. What was the experience of leading the Georgia Tech student body really like? What are your fears? How do you navigate the opinions of thousands, and where did vulnerability play a part in unpacking your true potential?

This conversation not only opened my eyes to the world of student government but also to Pooja: who she is, where she comes from, and everything she has left to give. I cannot wait to continue watching her soar, at the intersection of community, policy, and technology. This episode is one for the books.

In today’s conversation, Pooja and I discuss:

- What or who influenced your drive and the paths you’ve pursued?

- When you started at Georgia Tech, what were your goals? What were you afraid of?

- What inspired your interest in joining student government?

- What advice would you share with anyone facing their first election?

- How did you discern what to do and then muster the courage to do it?

- Talk me through your experience growing through student government

- What kept you grounded when everything turned too scary to manage?

- Why did you not think you were capable, initially?

- What might no one have known about your experience as President?

- How did you navigate hearing what others thought you should do with your influence?

- What advice would you have for your younger self and best friends listening to this episode?

- What’s your dream job?

- What’s the best book you’ve ever read?

….and more.

Pooja, it is an honor to host this story and share it with the world, today. I adore you and cannot wait to continue cheering you on from afar. Let’s do this!

11: “Strong over skinny.” A Raw Q&A on Finding Food & Movement Freedom, with Blogger and Fitness Instructor, Sydney Morlan

Sydney Morlan grew up an athlete and quickly came to understand her love for life in the gym, managing what she ate, and looking to how she thought about food and exercise as her source of success. Inevitably, that mindset took over Sydney's life.

Today’s episode, I invited Sydney for real talk on understanding how she developed an eating disorder, what it took to launch her recovery, and how she currently navigates life in and outside of college in the journey towards finding her strongest self (over skinniest). Now, with at-home workouts for others to join live or online, constant content inspiring friends, and growing a community united to listen to their truest definition of success, @sydneymorlanfitness is almost 2,000 strong and growing every day. (Don’t forget to follow!)

(*Important Disclaimer: Sydney and I are not licensed or qualified eating disorder specialists. If you are struggling with an eating disorder and find this conversation may be triggering, I encourage you to find support with a licensed professional counselor or specialist.)

This episode is for:

- The Gen-Z girl in or right out of college, struggling to own herself and find wellness and balance outside toxic diet culture

- Sydney offers a story of empathy, grounded truth, hope and advice on how she’s walking through recovery and finding purpose in her pain

- Empowering anyone looking to start a side hustle or Instagram account documenting any journey or coaching others

Thanks for tuning in today! If you loved today’s episode, screenshot and share it with a friend who has to listen, too and if you happen to share it on your Instagram story, don’t forget to tag @sydneymorlanfitness and @passagespod so we can thank you.

9: How This Creative (for Netflix!) Hustled for Meaningful Achievement in Entrepreneurship and Real Estate, ft. Myles Berrio

9: How This Creative (for Netflix!) Hustled for Meaningful Achievement in Entrepreneurship and Real Estate, ft. Myles Berrio

Okay I am STARSTRUCK to release today's conversation with my new friend, Myles. Myles Berrio is a creative entrepreneur, real estate investor, husband, and father who scaled his mega-successful photography business from hobby to full-time pursuit all in his early 20s. Myles was most recently recognized as the official photographer for the Netflix reality series, Love is Blind, and built his career photographing weddings and global campaigns for brands like UberEats, WeWork, Target, and Revolve. Taking away lasting lessons in creative entrepreneurship, Myles is currently embracing change as a constant and pivoting out of the creative industry into real estate investing to be present for his growing family and lean into his lifelong dream of working in real estate. As a fellow creative, I have looked up to Myles since coming across his work as a member of The Rising Tide Society - a community and network of local monthly meetups for creative entrepreneurs. Since the initial inspiration of Myles’ work, I’ve always looked forward to the day I could learn and share his story. TODAY, my friend, is that day.

This episode will:

- Connect with the young and hungry jack-of-all-trades, hustling to have it all without the faith that they actually can.

- Explore the heart & drive behind a “success story”, sharing the raw reality and lessons learned in building and pivoting away from a booming creative business

- Relay tangible activity management tips and mindset shifts to walk away from busy and walk into meaningful relationships in life and work.

-------

I ask Myles:

- How did this all start?

- Before you “made it” as a photographer, what were you afraid of?

- Have you always had the self assurance and confidence in yourself and career that you have today?

- What were your goals when you first started out and how did they evolve?

- How did you make the decision to pivot out of photography and into real estate?

- What does it feel like to take a complete 180?

- What do you think sets successful people apart?

- What would you tell someone who’s inspired by successful people but can’t move past resistance, or can’t believe that success in their field could be within their reach?

- When have you chosen faith over fear?

- How do you manage it all?

- Best relationship advice you’ve ever received?

8: “Don't settle for a less-than life.” How to Heal Your Gut & Hormones with Holistic Health Practitioner, Calee Shea

Calee Shea is an Atlanta, Georgia based Holistic Health Practitioner. She works with women to help them eliminate hormonal acne, beat bloat, increase libido, and support their cycle health so they can feel good all month long. After years of terrible periods and coming off the pill her freshman year of college, Calee was left with post-birth control syndrome, acne, hair loss, and digestive pain that left her desperate for answers. She spent the next few years learning what it means to work with the body rather than against it and has since specialized in periods and sexual health, with a major focus on the fut. Calee believes when our gut and hormones are in balance, we will feel like our best selves.

ALSO SHE CHANGED MY LIFE. I worked with Calee through the summer of 2019, after reaching a breaking point with my decade-long battle with acne, food intolerances, anxiety, and utter disconnection with my body. Working with Calee changed everything for me and today, she just might change you too.

In this episode, I get REAL with Calee, diving into all things hormone and gut health, her journey launching a business as a holistic health coach, and so much more. You’ll hear Calee and I talk through:

- How did you get to where you are today?

- What inspired you to hone in on your niche and launch your coaching business?

- What did the beginning stages of your business look like?

- What changes have you implemented to take your business to the next level?

- How do you continue to learn in order to bring your clients the best expertise?

- When should someone consider enrolling in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition?

- What’s your best advice for those looking to build a community on Instagram?

- What do you specialize in?

- What’s the biggest challenge the women you work with tend to be facing?

- How can someone tell what they’re struggling with is related to a hormonal imbalance?

- What are maybe 3 things someone listening can do, starting today, if they’re struggling with hormonal imbalance?

- What are your best tips on how to prioritize our health and hormones in fast paced, stressful roles and keep everything in balance?

- Is there anything you wish you could shake every woman’s shoulders and tell them that they might not know?

- How do you begin a personal, holistic health journey? What are small changes to integrate into your daily life if you’re not in the position to hire a coach or practitioner just yet?

- What’s the biggest benefit in seeing a holistic health coach versus an MD?

- How do you find the right holistic health professional for you? And how can you tell if they're any good at what they do?

- What is FAM? I saw you talk about it on Instagram and would love to know more.

- If someone is interested in working with you, what do they need to do to get started?

6: Pros and Cons of Leaping Full-Time into Tech Entrepreneurship, ft. Co-Founder of Shotcall, Riley Auten

Growing up in Silicon Valley, Riley chose to study software engineering, leaning into his natural interests and experiences to guide his path forward. After graduating from Georgia Tech with a degree in computer science, Riley Austen started his career as a Software Engineer for Amazon. Not long after, Riley ended up pivoting out of big tech to take the leap into entrepreneurship - joining the startup accelerator Techstars with a team of friends to build and scale their startup: Shotcall. Shotcall is a platform designed to connect content creators with their fans through video games. I chat with Riley about the whole story: what he’s learned, what he’s building, and advice he’d share looking back.

I met Riley back at Georgia Tech, through the connection of my friend and mentor, Bryan Wish. Riley and I were both studying computing with a vested interest in young entrepreneurship and finding our community on campus. Together, we started Georgia Tech’s first chapter of the Kairos Society: a fellowship and fund for top students aiming to solve the world's greatest challenges. Even after Riley graduated and I leaned more into my passion for TEDx events, we stayed in touch and I’m so glad we did, because getting to know Riley and the Shotcall team led us to this conversation today.

This episode is for you if you’ve ever wondered:

- What’s it like to grow up in Silicon Valley, study software engineering and subsequently join a tech giant like Amazon straight out of undergrad?

- What’s the difference between starting a product and starting a business

- Do you have to be the world’s most creative problem solver in order to start or join a startup?

- Why is there so much money in the gaming industry, what the opportunities look like to get in on that action, and what Shotcall is doing to bridge the gap between fans and stars?

- The good, the bad, and the ugly of starting any new venture.

- What a startup accelerator is and provides, and whether working through the same program as companies like Classpass and SalesLoft changes how you think your team and your business.

- Riley’s advice if you’re interested in starting a startup from the ground up.

And more.

It’s fast, it’s to the point, and we get straight into the why behind tech entrepreneurship - something I literally get HYPE to talk about. Ready?

4: “I started to tell myself yes.” Lessons in Resilience, Marketing, and Trusting Your Imagination, with Alexandra Metz

4: “I started to tell myself yes.” Lessons in Resilience, Marketing, and Trusting Your Imagination, with Alexandra Metz

This week, I'm so excited to introduce you to my friend, Alexandra Metz. Alexandra and I grew up in the same hometown, both danced ballet, and graduated from the same high school. As I’ve followed Alexandra on social media, I’ve witnessed her graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, work with dedication as a physical therapy assistant, and recently, launch a completely virtual ballet school. But, there’s more to Alexandra’s story - and I can’t believe how thankful I am to have sat down with her to hear it. In today’s episode, you’re going to hear:

  • How she faced the pressures of pursuing higher education and unfulfilled expectations
  • What it felt like to face the truth of what she had to change head on
  • The impact of serendipity and trusting her inner voice
  • How being told no was her life’s way of course correcting itself
  • The most powerful things ballet taught her about the mind body connection and how much she is capable of
  • Raw stories of facing judgment and ridicule, only to dust herself off and come out stronger
  • How she started and marketed a thriving business on Day 1 - without knowing anything about marketing
  • Her deeply relatable journey of gratitude & learning to appreciate the gifts life has to offer
  • And more.

Alexandra, in this conversation, taught me to see success in life and work in a completely new way, and I will never be the same. Before we jump in: I want to thank you, Alexandra, for bearing your vulnerability with us - and I also want to wish you a happy birthday! Yep, when this episode goes live, it’s her birthday! God’s timing can be kind of funny that way.

I hope you learn from and laugh along with Alexandra the same ways I did. Don’t forget to subscribe, and if you’ve enjoyed the conversations hosted on Passages so far, let me know over @passagespod on Instagram, or leave a review over on iTunes. Your support will never go unnoticed - and I’m so thankful.

3: "It’s safe to be bigger than you’ve been." How to Find, Own, and Execute on Your BIG Ideas, with Haley Hoffman Smith

Haley Hoffman Smith was recently named by Forbes as one of today's most influential female speakers. She is the author of Her Big Idea, a book on creativity, ideation, and women's empowerment which debuted as a Top 3 Bestseller in Women & Business. She is a regular keynote speaker who recently spoke at Harvard, Yale, Microsoft, TEDx, and more. A recent Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University (2018), she wrote her honors thesis on how women develop their sense of self-agency in entrepreneurship and venture capital. She is also the founder of the Her Big Idea Fund in partnership with Brown University's Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, which awards grants to women who apply with BIG ideas. Having founded an international nonprofit for girls’ literacy and empowerment at age 18, she has harnessed her own self-agency to surpass doubt surrounding her age and gender.

At Brown, she was the President of Women’s Entrepreneurship and started the first-ever women’s entrepreneurship incubator. She cares deeply about identifying and obliterating the limits women feel in the pursuit of their ventures, so they may live in their full power and create their own BIG ideas. Haley has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Business Insider, and the Washington Examiner, and writes for Entrepreneur and Thrive Global.

Brace yourself my friend. There are a million and one things to learn from this conversation, but here are a few of my favorite quotes to look out for:

- “The real power of a dream is instilling in us the will to aspire.”
- “I’m going to be big and pervasive and you’re going to see me do it with lashes on”
- “It’s during the time when everything goes wrong that the true innovators come to the surface”
- “You need to do it as soon as possible”
- “You become what you believe of yourself”
- “Go to the limits of your longing”
And so... much... more.

Get ready. This is a good one.

2: "Humans hire humans." How to Get a Job (That You Really Want), with Elle Overholt: Founder and Career Strategist at Forth

2: "Humans hire humans." How to Get a Job (That You Really Want), with Elle Overholt: Founder and Career Strategist at Forth

Today, I’m talking with Elle Overholt, Founder & Career Strategist at Forth LLC. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia but based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Elle (@forth_llc) has a passion for helping college students and young adults achieve their dream careers by articulating the talents and experience they already possess. After graduating from Georgia Tech with a degree in supply chain and operations, Elle accepted the best job she could right out of college, achieving exactly what she’d thought she should do. After a few years, though, Elle realized the misalignment in her strengths and interests with the opportunities presented in front of her. She then set out to be the very career strategist she’d always wished she’d had as a student.

After hearing about Elle and everything Forth is doing to empower young professionals, I knew I had to bring her on - and you guys, her advice is gold.

In this episode you’re going to hear her share:

- Why it’s totally okay to accept a job you know you won’t stay in
- The professional advantage to look forward to post-coronavirus and the #1 interview question all job hunters need to prepare for
- The most mature thing you can do as a twenty something
- THE tips - like the nitty gritty instructions you’ve been waiting for - to growing and leveraging professional relationships
- The easiest way to stand out when applying for a job
- How to not get interview ghosted
- The most important and most overlooked detail on your resume
- The LinkedIn tips you can’t find on Google
- A general kick in the butt to get the job you want
- And more.

I hope you enjoy my conversation with Elle as much as I did! Ready?
