BONUS Section V: Separation | "Doctrine Essentials: HBC's Statement of Faith" [ Sunday School ]
Section V: Separation
We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as to not bring reproach upon their Savior and Lord; and, that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations is commanded of God. Although we believe that absolute immunity to sin takes place only when believers are taken to be with the Lord, we do realize the necessity of forsaking a habitual walk in sin (II Timothy 3:1-5, Romans 12:1- 2, Romans 14:13, I John 2:15-17, II John 9-11, II Corinthians 6:14-17, James 2:1-26, II Peter 3:18).
PURPOSE: A Doctrinal Series for Heritage Bible Chapel’s Sunday School, under the premise that it is vital to review and teach through our Statement of Faith (Doctrine Essentials) with some regularity to avoid “theological amnesia and spiritual myopia.” The subjects are taught using a scripture-first approach to feature highlights of our confession in a 30-minute teaching setting. Teachers are encouraged to focus on main points, work in discussion and application as appropriate, and supplement with HBC’s Constitution, church history, and other resources. Care must be given to isolate the main points due to time constraints.
LOCATION & TIME: This class will be located in the Sanctuary. Attendees are encouraged to begin arriving at 9:00 a.m. Teaching will start by 9:10 a.m.
BONUS Section II: God | "Doctrine Essentials: HBC's Statement of Faith" [ Sunday School ]
Section II: God
We believe in one triune God, existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit; co-eternal in being, co-identical in nature, co-equal in power and glory, Who possess the same attributes and perfections yet carry out distinct offices (Deuteronomy 6:4, II Corinthians 13:14, I Peter 1:2, Matthew 28:19).
We believe that God the Father is the absolute omnipotent ruler of the universe, sovereign in creation, providence, and redemption, a perfect Spirit in Whom is perfect holiness, and infinite wisdom (Psalm 99:6; 103:19, 139:7-12, 147:5, Isaiah 44:24, Malachi 3:6, Matthew 7:7-8, John 4:24, I John 4:8, Romans 11:36).
We believe that Jesus Christ is the divine (John 1:1, 10:30, 38, Colossians 2:9), eternal (John 1:2), Son of God (Matthew 3:17, 8:29, 11:27, 16:16, 17:5, Mark 1:1, I John 5:9-12), that He was miraculously conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:34-35, Galatians 4:4), that He perfectly revealed and accomplished the will of God, taking upon Himself the demands and necessities of human nature (Philippians 2:5-8); that He identified Himself completely with mankind (John 1:14, Romans 1:3-4) yet was and remains without sin (I Peter 2:21-23, Hebrews 4:15), that He literally and vicariously died, was buried and raised from the dead (Romans 6:4, 9, I Corinthians 15:4, 20, I Thessalonians 1:10), and that He ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9), and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Romans 8:34, Hebrews 9:24, I John 2:1-2).
We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, that He convicts the world of sin (John 16:8-11), helps (John 14:16-17, 26) and baptizes all believers into the body of Christ (I Corinthians 12:12-14). We believe that He is the divine Teacher (John 14:26, I John 2:27) who guides believers into truth (John 16:13), and that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled and controlled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18, I John 2:20).
Sunday, July 3, 2022. Acts 16:6-10 | "Concluding That God Had Called Us." When God does not reveal His guidance as a plan, that doesn't mean He doesn't have one. The short biography of Moses' early years in Exodus chapter 2 conveyed a significant experience when Moses was rejected. So substantial was it that it is preserved in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. But God takes Moses' rejection in Exodus chapter 3 and sends Moses back into a similar predicament, but this time with God's call, God's name, and God's presence!

[Spiritual Conflict] James 4:4-10 | "Submit Yourselves"
Sunday, February 13, 2022. James 4:4-10 | "Submit Yourselves"
The spiritual conflict brought about by our sin is entirely avoidable. By the grace of God, we can resist the devil, and he will flee! But first, we must do what God will not do for us. We must submit ourselves to God. In this sermon, we discover what it means to submit to God and obey this command according to Scripture.
This message preaches from James 4:4-10. It is part of a preaching series about Spiritual Conflict. The title of this sermon: "Submit Yourselves"

[Spiritual Conflict] Job 1:1-12 | "Does Job Fear God For No Reason?"
Sunday, January 30, 2022. Job 1:1-12 | "Does Job Fear God For No Reason?"
This sermon continues a preaching series collected around the theme of Spiritual Conflict. In this series, we're looking first at the three places the Devil speaks in Holy Scripture, knowing that our enemy is repetitive, not creative, so we are not ignorant of his designs.
The Devil spoke first about God in the Garden of Eden to the woman. "Did God actually say...?"
His voice is heard again in this Wisdom book of the Old Testament named Job. Here the Devil speaks, not to Job about God, but to God about Job.
What makes Job a fascinating case study on Spiritual Conflict is that Job is not part of this discussion that involves him. Therefore, he doesn't have a say in the matter.
We'll give thought to what it means to trust God when God leaves us in the dark with unanswered questions. We'll also ask if some spiritual conflict might be unnecessary? Finally, we'll consider how the enemy attempts to control us through possessions and what we can do to guard against this pitfall.
This message preaches from Job 1:1-12. It is part of a preaching series about Spiritual Conflict. The title of this sermon: "Does Job Fear God For No Reason?"
[Spiritual Conflict] Genesis 3:1-8 | "Did God Actually Say...?"
Sunday, January 23, 2022. Genesis 3:1-8 | "Did God Actually Say...?"
If we are not experiencing spiritual conflict, then we are not engaged in the work of the Word! Conflict of a spiritual nature is inevitable when we obey the commands of our Savior. Through our obedience as witnesses for Christ, we will be confronting all manner of sin with the message of Gospel truth.
This sermon introduces a new preaching series on Spiritual Conflict by looking at the first words of the Devil spoken in Scripture.
Listen as the Devil casts doubt on the truth of God's character and Word, and let's discover together what God actually says as we wake up and gear up for spiritual conflict.
This message preaches from Genesis 3:1-8. It begins a new preaching series on Spiritual Conflict. The title of this sermon: "Did God Actually Say...?"
[He Said, "Father"] John 17:24-26 | "With Me Where I Am"

In this text, at the conclusion of this prayer, Jesus makes a gracious request related to His presence.
While we are familiar with Jesus' promise to be present with us always, here Jesus prays the opposite - not that He be present with us, but rather that we might be present with Him, to see His glory, and know the eternal love of the Father.
At the conclusion of this prayer, Jesus unites His will, His knowledge, and His obedience to His Father.
This message preaches from John 17:24-26. It concludes a preaching series through John 17, "He Said, 'Father.'" The title of this sermon: "With Me Where I Am."

In this text, Jesus prays for disciples beyond the eleven gathered around Him - His disciples of the future. We learn that Christ's Church is much bigger than one gathering at one time and one place. Listen to Jesus speak about the soon-to-be-saved, the success of the sent, and the stewardship of the saints for the salvation of souls!
This message preaches from John 17:20-23. It is part of a preaching series through John 17, "He Said, 'Father.'" The title of this sermon is "For Those Who Will Believe."
[He Said, "Father"] John 17:17-19 | "Sanctify Them" (A New Year's Sermon)
Sunday, January 2, 2022. John 17:17-19 | "Sanctify Them" (A New Year's Sermon)
At the beginning of each new year, we evaluate a "vision" through personal goals or corporate strategy. We dream about who we hope to be and what we hope to accomplish in a short span of one year. Leaders of local church congregations strive to articulate a clear vision too, but the result is often secular, not sanctified.
In this sermon, we stop to ask an all-important question: What is Christ's vision for His Church? Two simple answers emerge through this unfolding prayer of Jesus.
May this message encourage you to evaluate your new year's vision in light of God's revealed Word.
This message preaches from John 17:17-19. It is part of a preaching series through John 17, "He Said, 'Father.'" The title of this sermon is "Sanctify Them."

Sunday, December 12, 2021. John 17:4-5 | "Glorify Me"

1 Corinthians 16:13-24 | "Our Lord, Come!"
It's not enough that Jesus is MY Lord, or Jesus is YOUR Lord. 1 Corinthians compels the Church to ask a different question: Church - Is Jesus OUR Lord?
In the closing text of this letter, the apostle presents a series of final instructions meant to keep the Church from failing and propel the Church forward in power. What we do with these commands will ultimately reveal who our leader is and who we love.
This message preaches from 1 Corinthians 16:13-24. It is the final sermon in a preaching series through 1 Corinthians: "To the Church." The title of this message is "Our Lord, Come!"
1 Corinthians 15:12-34 | "Christ Has Been Raised"
Sunday, October 31, 2021. 1 Corinthians 15:12-34 | "Christ Has Been Raised."
If Christ has not been raised from the dead, our preaching, faith, and future are useless and wasted. As this text says, "let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die." Death would be a final, miserable end to such a short, meaningless existence. But the gospel of grace preached to us says differently. Christ has been raised from the dead! And the resurrection of Jesus Christ makes it possible for us to know God and experience the power of His resurrection in this life and the life to come.
This message preaches from 1 Corinthians 15:12-34. It is part of a preaching series through 1 Corinthians "To The Church." The title of this sermon is "Christ Has Been Raised."
1 Corinthians 15:1-11 | "The Grace of God"
Sunday, October 24, 2021. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 | "The Grace of God."
The apostle writes to remind the church in Corinth about the gospel he preached and that they believed - or so he thought? At the same time, the apostle preaches this gospel to himself as a reminder that his labor is not in vain, all because of God's grace.
This message preaches from 1 Corinthians 15:1-11. It is part of a preaching series through 1 Corinthians "To The Church." The title of this sermon is "The Grace of God."

1 Corinthians 13:1-13 | "The Greatest of These"
Sunday, October 03, 2021. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 | "The Greatest of These"
We, humans, tend to filter God through only one adjective, like "love." God is love, but He is much more than that. In the same way, if we view God's grace of love from only one angle, we risk distorting what love truly is. Love, as defined by God, is multifaceted. In this famous chapter, the apostle explains to the church what happens when love is absent, when love is active, and when love abides.
This message preaches from 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. It is part of a preaching series through 1 Corinthians "To The Church." The title of this sermon is "The Greatest of These."
1 Corinthians 12:13-31 | "You Are The Body"
Sunday, September 26, 2021. 1 Corinthians 12:13-31 | "You Are The Body."
We are what God says we are. It's that simple! The same Creator who said in the beginning, "let there be," and "there was," speaks a similar word to His Church today. God says, "You are the body of Christ and individually members of it!" What God creates, God sustains in Christ through the Holy Spirit. This reality has profound meaning for the identity and function of every local church and individual believer gathering in the name of Jesus.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34 | "The Lord's Supper"
Sunday, September 12, 2021. 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 | "The Lord's Supper."
When the church in Corinth gathered together for the Christ meal, one seat at the table was noticeably absent - THE LORD'S! The apostle writes in a corrective tone to tell the church that what they are practicing in worship is not representative of Christ. He returns their focus upon the Lord by showing how the Lord's Supper in the present remembers the Lord's death in the past and looks to the Lord's judgment in the future.

As witnesses for Christ, our works testify about who God is and what God does. How can we ensure that our decisions and actions glorify God consistently and represent the gospel clearly in the eyes of believers and unbelievers? This text equips us with three ways to evaluate our actions as Christ-followers.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 | "Examples For Us"
Sunday, August 22, 2021. 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 | "Examples For Us."Are we guaranteed as a local church to succeed in what God calls us to do? Do we think we are immune from failure? The apostle would have us all "think again" if we are so arrogant. With the care of a concerned pastor and teacher, the apostle prepares a history lesson about a people whose favorable future was overthrown, by faulty feelings which overlooked, a faithful God who oversees. Who were these people? They were "our fathers," and what happened to them may happen to us if we are unwilling to learn from their example. This message preaches from 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. It is part of a preaching series through 1 Corinthians "To The Church." This sermon is called "Examples For Us."
