22 Patterns Of Aaron Gajo - Honesty in family & in Coffee industry
Aaron and I had known each other since 2016 but it wasn't until this year that our friendship grew closer. Aaron truly carries a familial vibe. One that reminds me of a distant relative who's always present in family reunions and occasions. Though we aren't directly blood-related, to me he has been a brother whom I consider family. Every time his name comes up in a conversation with friends who knew him from way back, there is a common denominator. Either he has been consistently present in all of their milestones or he has been a reliable source of guidance. Aaron holds wisdom that is tested through time and integrity of relationships he held on. This reflects the character he possesses; honesty, loyalty, and teachability that preserves his long-standing relationships. This is why those who he grew up with are seeking after his counsel. Aaron cares about being at peace and at reconciliation just as much as he values every person he comes across. He is not afraid to be in a vulnerable and uncomfortable situation, nonetheless, it challenges him. These challenges cause him to innovate towards his craft when it comes to writing, artistry, and art of making coffee as a barista, musician, and wordsmith. More than that, his ability to lead by example shows how he is willing to take the hit in able to maintain the bond of people he freely serves. His service has always been about creating a space where everyone feels included. In our conversation, we unpack the human tendencies that push the envelope of knowing somebody to loving people without compromise, whether it's in the workforce, within the sphere of influence or with customers.

20 Patterns of Gino Espineli - The Joy of Surrender & Hats of Urgency
Gino and I cross paths 2016 when he shared a message at a gathering I helped hosted in San Diego. That same gathering was the same night he met his now-wife, Stephanie. They both have been involved in my life and Erin's. Having witnessed all the transitions and challenges they faced, I am very glad to have Gino as one of the strong men who stood by me even through changes of pace and priorities. Gino's strong conviction in taking the risk to exemplify leadership trumps the common misconception and fears that surround a leader. A wordsmith, eloquent in speech and a man who's words cuts through ideology and forms dissolution, in efforts to maintain the unity within the body of faith. In pursuit of raising up men to become leaders of one mind in Jesus, Gino and his wife Steph not only took the unpopular route but also the unpredictable life of a full-time missionary. His ministry work flourished through years of gathering believers in the faith through facilitating online connection, studies, and leading a movement of Biblically rooted men and women. His passion to pursue ministry is at the heart of being a son and a father. From the most painful event to the newness that now comes from holding his own son, Gino relives both his dream of being a father and a minister; all came with a sacrifice. Leaving San Diego and moving to Europe may be daunting but his calling and his 'why' tested through time showed that it was meant to build up his character. In this conversation, Gino taught me great lessons that put everything in perspective of what discipleship and Christian faith looked like from First Century Believers to 21st Century Christians.

19 Patterns of Mark Estrada - Language of an Orphan & Sons Becoming Fathers
I've known Mark roughly around 2 years but it felt like 7 years to me. I met him at a coffee shop while he was slanging some latte for me. Little did I know, that was the start of our friendship. I won't forget that day. It marked significance in my life that clarified the course of my greatest desires. Becoming a husband and a father one day. Mark spoke a word to me that day that not only postured me to pursue entrepreneurship, it also matured my understanding of who God is. Inherently, Mark has a fathering heart from how he leads worship, working in the coffee industry, and a Jui Jitsu coach. Both in his meekness and boldness, Mark desires to gather people, where we are challenged, keep asking questions to understand each other that goes beyond our differences. To reconcile our biases. As a student in the faith, he learns to embrace the historical roots of a family deep within the spectrum of his own and of humanity itself. His desire for familial bond and community both explores the blurred lines of languages, breaking the walls that separate us as people. In this conversation, we funnel down the elusive massivity of our western culture down to the intricate intimacy of how it is to be a son and a father.

18 Patterns Of Jonathan Magno - Challenges of Communicating & Maintaining Respect
I met Jon towards the end of 2018. I didn't realize that he goes way back with some of our mutual friends. From his involvement with Basement to being a former piano student of my future mother-in-law, it felt like we've known each other for quite some time. Jon is outright cool and collective. With his calm demeanor, he made me feel welcomed from the get-go. I appreciate his ability to stay engaged in a conversation. He often asks questions that candidly lead to more questions to things I rarely think about. This reflects on his approach towards communicating with children and youth. Being a youth pastor, Jon learned how to carefully navigate through the different personalities he encounters with his students. A coach, teacher, pastor, and becoming a counselor, Jon finds himself in a position where respect and dignity are a balancing act. There is a sense of pay it forward between a teacher-student relationship that Jon hopes to instill as he maintains his integrity and personal convictions. It is a calling as he coined it to be given the opportunity of teaching and counseling. It is no easy job for many educators and teachers to establish their leadership role and be given much appreciation for the help they wilfully provide. This is what Jon and I had to process in the midst of understanding how we can connect to people and how respect is a huge part of communicating what we lack or long for. There may be no right or wrong way to communicate in some cases but there are definitely boundaries that Jon believes is rooted in love.

17 Patterns of Joel Salangsang - Coffee, Cross & Community
I met Joel through mutual friends. It's surprising to see the people he knew! It definitely was a small world for a San Diegan like Joel who came back from Florida after finishing College, Majoring in Advertising. He was intriguing to me, in a good way that drew me to close to his 'why'. His sense of fashion and eye for design is refreshing to see. As much as I appreciate good design, I appreciate Joel's drive and creativity. For a short amount of time I've known Joel, his conviction is contagious. He hits the right chords that can motivate someone towards self-reflection. He has a way towards leading others by example, showing others that he is willing to do whatever it takes to stay connected. As a young adult leader at his church, the birth of Basement came from his yearning to cultivate a community. Even more so, a family. An idea that in a community, friends are made and family is born. A lasting effort of showing tangible support and guidance through monthly gatherings and most of its growth happens in-between. The intention behind Basement for Joel is that at some point in life, everyone will crave to be known, heard, and loved. For someone to be there for you, even if it only takes one person showing you what it's like to be in the presence of the one who cares. BSMT is a pattern disruptor from the busy schedule and demanding priorities. It's challenging you to look around and re-evaluate what matters the most. In this conversation, we find that coffee and the people we cross paths will soon find it's way back to a common human desire which is belongingness.

16 Patterns of Johnny Valdez - Relentless Heart of Communication & Commitment
Johnny and I met 3 years ago through my good friend Freddy who got us a gig that we both worked in. It was a weekend road trip up north, heading to San Francisco was the ideal scenario to get to know someone. I learned a lot about him in that car ride. He asked questions that opened my eyes to how I used to see the world around me. It was probably one of the best conversations I've had that year. Johnny is down-to-earth smart. He's got the wisdom that is sought after in leadership. At 21, He's involved in Church Planting, Non-profit organization, Business Venture, and mobilizing movements. You wouldn't have known his been involved all that since he constantly revamps his social media presence while keeps things on a down low. I appreciated that about Johnny. His heart to serve is purely out of sight from approval of societal norms. That pushed him closer to the issues in the city and pulled him away from the common distractions. I often pick up new things to learn from him as he dabbles on tools that contribute to the understanding of communication. Every glimpse of his work, design, photography, and presence always had the intention to provoke compassion. I learned vital principles from Johnny and one of them is from this conversation. He sees the world maturely from a justice perspective; there his commitment to pursuing human connection got him close to all walks of life. This conversation reminded us that our measure of sacrifice is beyond ourselves.

14 Patterns of Jayson Caalaman - Breaking The Mold and The More
Remember DJ's Episode? Jayson is the older brother of DJ and AJ (youngest brother). I met Jayson when I visited his home church back in 2015. Fast forward within the most recent couple of years that I started going to his home church that I started to get to know him more. His presence felt like he was an older brother to me, even though we are the same age. A humble and willing heart, Jayson consistently serves his family and friends in every capacity he can. He is always easy to get along with. It is always refreshing to see his leadership within the church we go together and with his brothers. His resilience shows the integrity and dedication he has for his health and career. Finding out that through his childhood, with all the breaks, and scars he took through the hurdles of life, Jayson's perseverance stems from his humility to learn and patience to recover. As many tries as the injuries he had, he remained faithful. His convictions of what the future hold and the more that'll come around does not stop him from enjoying today. Our conversation allowed me to process one of the hardest questions we seldom ask ourselves that showed me more glimpses of who Jayson is.

13 Patterns of Josiakim Barcelon - Decisions & Risk
I would say that Josiakim is one of the first I've met in Early 2015 within 2 years of living in San Diego since I moved back from the Bay area in 2012. The same night I met Leo from the previous episode 'Self Help and New Version' and my Fiancee, Erin who did the Pilot episode with me was the night I met Josiakim. Josia is the friend who's always in reach. I would see him serving various church functions and would get excited to see him on stage! Either he'd be playing on keys or part of the leadership team. He has a big heart to serve and lead the younger generation. As a worship leader at his church in Temecula, Josiakim shares both his talents from singing, dancing, playing various instruments to teaching and facilitating team building. On top of these weekly commitments, he still manages to keep up with school and work. His diligence towards serving in the ministry is inseparable in how he operates at school and work. Every time we ran into each other, I've always felt welcomed. In this conversation, we embraced our good 'o light-hearted conversations and deep ones that encouraged us to continue recognizing that the decisions and risks that we take are part of our daily commitment in serving others.

12 Patterns of Rohan Tandon - Art Of Getting Lost
I met Rohan close to a year now. Time flew by. I was at a waffle shop in North Park, Atypical Waffle Co and the owner of the shop introduced me to him. He is one of those friends whom I had no mutual connection yet it felt like I've known him for a while. I'm honored to even call him a friend. The lengths that he has taken to catch up during weekdays, anytime and anywhere without knowing he had no car still blew my mind to this day. Rohan is down-to-earth talented. The way he envisions his work stems from his recorded dreams and imaginations that speaks beyond just his current situation. It is a blast from the past, embracing today, and dreaming of tomorrow echoes in the body of his work. There are so much depth and meaning behind the art he creates let alone the purpose of creating. Rohan grew up from another country and went through the challenges of adapting and pursuing what he loves. The intention that he puts in his work is only a glimpse of who he is. A dreamer, wanderer, explorer, faithful student meandering the wonders of life and the unknown. He illustrates an observation of events in his life and histories of the past pointing to the lost art of present life. From sensing, feeling, observing, appreciating and being is where Lucidstarfield interrupts our regular way of seeing life. This conversation rekindles the joy and excitement we find in art and life. How the simplicity of mundane opened our eyes to what matters.

11 Patterns of DJ Caalaman - Language of Music & Reflection
I've known DJ about 3 years now, along with two of his other siblings. My first impression of DJ is quite refreshing. He's a simple guy who knows how to keep a conversation going. He is often the one who reaches out during our Sunday service to ask how I'm doing. Unassuming and genuine showing interest in people, DJ is the person I enjoy conversing. It's like being in a rhythm that resonates much like his enjoyment in playing keys. He's got the mind of an unconventional artist, learning the unpredictability of uncanny. If I can describe him in a few words, he's a Jazz hand and that's sort of a giveaway. His proficiency in theories of music let alone the groove he jams flawlessly got him to take part in artist initiatives like Kickstarter album-slash-book release, live show sessions, and record collaboration. This conversation opened us up to clever insights into how human language is similar to a piano duo. Music can speak to us and has varieties that teach us how we can study ourselves. This episode turned semi-demo session of DJ's display of brilliance, that every chord is one too many ways to play like how we live and learn colorfully.

10 Patterns of Eugene 'X' Ramos - The Style in Lifestyle & Less Gear, More Skill
I've known X close to 3 years now. I met him at an event that wasn't in San Diego. HA! A social gathering that took place in Orange County led us to doing gigs and projects in San Diego. From the get go, Xavier does well in making people feel comfortable around him. He's got the smooth talk and a sense of fashion that draws you in with curiosity. There is something uniquely different about X. He leaves a mark. That mark can set the tone of the environment he is in. X marks the spot! A hidden talent of San Diego (formerly from the Bay Area), his body of work is a collision of street fashion and portrait photography that slowly introduced new approaches. Working with X allowed me to see how he embodied the way he carried his style into his work. Even with as little resources, his textbook knowledge and avant-garde approach is a result of brilliant artistry. In our conversation, he shared about how life choices from Keto diet to the way he carried himself affected how he adapts around work environment and impressions of art.

09 Patterns Of Mo Cisse - The Best Version is Yourself & Discipline to Never Settle
I met Mo earlier this year through a friend who recommended me to work with him for a photoshoot. We're talking about third-degree separation. It's amazing to see how these connections can lead to friendships. After showing up at Mo's office in downtown to take product shots for his new line with Meraki Allure, we found common ground. We both understood the hurdles of being an immigrant. I only knew him for less than a year and it already felt like we've known each other for a while. From his sense of fashion to his family celebration made me appreciate more of the culture we both grew up in. Mo's aspiration to set the bar high on a new scale within the fashion industry has exemplified virtues more than just being an entrepreneur or fashion consultant. He inspires people to see the authentic version of themselves by the way they live their life, fashionably. This conversation showed how much we have both learned in our dreams that required discipline and how all of it revealed the best version of ourselves.

08 Patterns of Ché E. Castro - The Slayed Mindset & Power In 1%
I met Ché around 2016 when I was part of an organization here in San Diego. Taking part in one of the projects we filmed where she wrote the script, gave me a glimpse of Ché's past and her story moving forward. In our brief encounter, I knew she is successful but what I didn't know was her purpose. Her wits and practicality served a lot of entrepreneurs and creatives with insight on productivity without compromising the message of purpose. Ché finds joy in practicing what she taught others and the lifestyle she now lives cast a shadow to her past. Even through success comes the hardest experience that led Ché to rediscovering what was spoken to her from the very beginning. In this conversation, we unpack the power in 1% and how our life experiences can shape our mindset towards how we execute our purpose, one day at a time.

07 Patterns of Leo Garcia - Self Help & New Version
I met leo 4 years ago at a social gathering in San Diego. A night that change the last 4 years of my life in America. Along with 2 other branch of connection leading to 6 degrees separation, where Leo is a mutual friend. He stands talls in any situation, making sure that his presence is known. Known for his meek stature. That night, Leo approached me. With a welcoming gesture, affirmed the very reason why he does what he does until today. From gathering people for the sake of self-indulging entertainment that turned 360 degrees to bringing together people of faith to walk in their full potential. It was a long journey for Leo to fully understand his identity. After he had gone through experiences that cost his life, arose conflict, and challenged his marriage; his higher call in taking part with the Godly commission showed what's beyond himself. In this conversation, I witnessed the newness that Leo is becoming and the person that he has been to make a global impact.

06 Patterns of Alexis Dumeng - Feel Responsibly & Thank you, For Your Service
The people you meet behind the counter can eventually become your friend. I met Alexis at a Coffee House in La Mesa almost a year from now. Spunky and high spirited, Alexis finds her utmost fulfillment with serving in the food and restaurant industry. Her simple yet meaningful outlook in life gave her the extra boost she deserves in life, self-worth. Even at the brink of an ending relationship, she was challenged to learn valuable life lessons. From workplace to old stomping grounds, her journey slowly brewed an inner peace in her regardless of what she's been through. This conversation both afresh us with a clever insight that "Feeling Responsibly" is a good reminder that we are allowed to feel what we feel; as long as we have the self control for ourselves and the awareness for other people's way of being.

05 Patterns of Kevin Oswald - Waves & Perseverance
I remember the first time I met Kevin was at a coffee shop in downtown San Diego, late of 2016. Then I received a direct message on Instagram roughly 4 months later where he invited me to grab coffee. I never would have thought that to this day, one of the most humble man I knew is still a friend who's alway been there for me. Not only is Kevin approachable, he is easy to get along. As chill as the sea breeze, he can hold up to a good conversation and is honest about how easy or as hard as it gets. Kevin was fairly new to SoCal when I first met him but that didn't hold him back in finding ways to serve the local community. Found friends that also became a consistent part of his athletic disciplines and outdoor escapades. Then about a year before this conversation, we had lost touch. Random as the wave goes, Kevin and I picked up where we left off. In this conversation I found out how life crashed on Kevin and how his perseverance led him to find a new direction in life, out in the horizon.

04 Patterns of Haley Montgomery - Sirens & Boulders
I've known Haley since 2016 but it wasn't until 2017 that we started collaborating on projects. We quickly discovered how tight-knit our circle of friends are that led to initiating numerous projects with a community of creatives. Haley thrives with a bond of like-minded artist and creators. Her raw and unapologetic approach to music embraced vulnerability that fostered honest conversations. It all started with her album Confessions. Haley is one of many leaders who's demeanor is sprightly and warm. Yet behind the scenes she is struck down with relentless burdens as she mobilizes co-leaders to carry out with her God-given advocacy. Bent over sorrow and empathy, Haley struggles to make sense of the significant weight of her pursuits. As always, she is met with understanding that faith can move mountains, how much more a boulder. This conversation reveals Haley the weight of her goals and how she is intimately cared for mind, heart, body and soul.

03 Patterns of Ben Dulay - Underdog & Leader's Ingredients
Ben and I have been friends for 5 years. There was always something that stands out to me when I see Ben, his boldness. Always on his toes yet making sure that he recognizes the environment and people around. Being free flow and agile at capturing streams of creativity meshed in stories puts Ben as a top-performing photographer. His day job as a craftsman sets him down in a different scenario that challenged him to be more collective and austere. Although Ben's creative personality can set a mood and cast a bright appearance of beauty, he is realizing that there is more refinement in his life when no one is looking. The integral ingredients of life that Ben continues to search from the simplicity of mundane is revealing how he is rising up to unfiltered leadership, behind the scenes. Our conversation unfolds how Ben's honest lifestyle can change the way we show up every day.

02 Patterns of Leah Ouimet - Dreaming About Saving Lives
Leah and I have known each other since 2016. I met her through a social gathering that quickly turned to a regular meet up when we both became leaders of an organization based in San Diego. I’m inspired by Leah’s generosity to give her time and energy towards others. Whether that’s helping organize an event or making time to catch up with family and friends; she deeply cares about people. Pursuing a career in firefighting put Leah through the fire of choosing survival between what matters the most. In this conversation, Leah is less than a month away before moving to East Coast where she finds herself in a dream that set ablaze a desire to keep pursuing relationships.

01 Patterns of Levi Dulay - Turning Points & Running
Levi and I have been friends for more than 5 Years. In those years I've always seen how involved Levi was in the community. I admired his heart to help and serve behind the scenes. You won't always see him in the midst of a crowd. When you do, he is running alongside leaders who rely on his ability to administer, organize, and create. I learned that at this point in his life, he felt the race he was running is by himself. Even though he traveled frequently across the globe with numerous organizations at the age of 24, his race is just starting. This conversation will unpack Levi's realization about what he is fighting for and what this turning point looks like.

PILOT Patterns of JB Norman Verances - Who am I and why I started a Podcast with Erin Fong
My desire from these conversations is for me to keep saying ‘I don’t know’ but I want to learn and I want to understand. Just like a song whether I’m familiar to it or not, I will keep listening hoping to get Last Song Syndrome so I get to keep singing it! Would you agree that life is like a song made of notes, lyrics, instruments and patterns and because I got to know you more; Now I know how to sing about you.
That is how I want to champion you.
