PMP #149: Getting started with a virtual assistant
I was recently asked by some of the members of my Slack group about my experiencing hiring and working with a virtual assistant (VA). Working with a VA is something I’m still fairly new to so I’m by no means an expert on the subject but here are my thoughts and tips on the experience so far. PMP #148: 3 Questions to ask yourself to be happier
Asking yourself thought-provoking questions can be a great way of dealing with internal conflict and finding happiness. In this episode, I share three questions I try and ask myself on a semi-regular basis that I find help me to unload any stress I’m feeling and focus on the things that make me happy. Sometimes I simply think about these questions during a ring moment of quiet. For example when I’m walking or driving to work (and not listening to a podcast). Other times I try to go a bit deeper with my answers and write down my thoughts in a note on my computer (which is how I journal). PMP #147: The 'maybe snowball'
Every day we get bombarded by emails, ideas and incoming work requests. Some of these things may be worth your time but most of it probably isn’t. The trouble is that we’re social animals and love to please people. This is why we so often say ‘Yes’ to things we really shouldn’t be doing. Removing the word ‘maybe’ from your vocabulary and making quick decisions reduces decision fatigue and more importantly, frees up your time and energy for the things that really matter. PMP #145: My favourite products and everyday carry
In this episode, I’d like to talk about some of my favourite products and the gear I use on a daily basis. Before I get into the list, I’ll start by saying that I try to be a very responsible consumer. In other words, I think carefully before I make a purchase and ask myself, “Do I really need this?”. I also like to purchase things that have a long life-span that I’ll get a lot of use out of. PMP #143: Why I'm switching to ConvertKit (and leaving Mailchimp)
This week I made one of the biggest changes I've ever made to my business. I switched email providers from Mailchimp to ConvertKit. While this may not seem like a big deal to some, I've been a Mailchimp user for the last 5 and a half years, it's become the #1 I interact with and grow my audience and by my estimate and I've sent around 15 million emails using Mailchimp. It's a huge behind the scenes change to how my business operates (kind of like a liver transplant for your business). Moving to Convert Kit is a decision that's been years in the making and in this episode I'm going to explain what lead to this change. PMP #142: The Minor Team: Growing a team without hiring
For years I was very stubborn when it came to working with other people. I was like: “Well, I don't want to grow so I’ll do everything myself”. And sure, in the beginning, it’s probably a good idea to do everything yourself so you can save money and learn more about different parts of the business. However, as I’ve grown I’ve learned that I can’t and shouldn’t do everything myself. I’m now at the point where to be more efficient or increase revenue I need to get some outside help. Over the last few years, I’ve started to lean on more and more people for support and I’ve built a “Minor team” as I like to call it, without even realising. PMP #141: Which productivity "model" should you use?
You’ve probably heard loads of advice about how to be more productive. Perhaps you’ve been told (probably by me) to block your tasks onto your calendar. Maybe you’ve tried the Pomodoro technique or the Getting Things Done (GTD) method. Some people will tell you to write down “three absolutes” for the day or week. These techniques are what I refer to as “productivity methods” which define HOW you do your work. “There’s more than one way to skin a cat” and when it comes to managing your workload, there’s no shortage of methods to choose from. The truth is, there’s no one best way to manage your productivity. You probably need to try a few methods to find the thing that works for you and your personal style. The method you choose may even change based on the type of work you’re doing. PMP #140: How to simplify your tech with Kia Kamgar
I hear from people all the time who are confused about which tools to use and how they all fit together. In this day and age, most of us rely on a collection of tools and services to organise our tasks, plan our time and to actually do our work. However, things get tricky when you consider that some tools are quite similar and it's not always clear when you should use what. To help clarify some of these issues so you can get a better handle on your own "technology stack", I've called in my good friend, Kia (pronounced "Kay") Kamgar. Kia (a.k.a. the Marie Kondo of the tech world) is a member of my VIP program and we first connected on one of our group calls. Since then, he's been an incredible contributor to the group and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Kia is the face behind MacJunky.com where his goal is to "Keep IT simple". He works with individuals and business owners who are overwhelmed by their tools and helps them to create a simple and effective system. A few months ago I listened to this great episode of the Focussed podcast where hosts Mike and David discuss “moving the needle”. PMP #138: Why you shouldn't read too much
The average CEO reads about 60 books a year or 4-5 books per month. Reading is often positioned as being a prerequisite for success. For example, Warren Buffet reads for 5-6 hours a day and Bill Gates reads  Reading has been put on a pedestal as being a habit you have to have in order to be successful. CEO’s are used as examples of people who are successful because of how much they read. But should we be looking at it another way? Are these people successful despite how much they read? Bill Gates might read 50 books a year, but do you think he was doing this back when he started Microsoft in the 1970s? I want to emphasise here, I am NOT saying that reading is bad or that you shouldn’t read. I am where I am today because of the books I’ve read. But I do think we have to be careful about reading too much. PMP #136: Checklist: How to protect your digital life
Last week I came across this pretty scary article on Twitter. The author, Matthew Miller, tells the story of how he got “SIM swapped” and lost access to his Twitter and Gmail accounts, had his personal files and documents from Google Drive deleted and $25,000 stolen from his bank account. Most people I talk to are far too casual when it comes to protecting themselves and their data online. Either because they think “it won’t happen to me” or because taking steps to protect themselves is seen as too much of a chore. The frustrating thing about this story is at the end, Matthew lists all the really simple things he did wrong that left him exposed. In this episode, I’d like to list some simple things you can do to protect yourself and your data. I would view the following list as the bare minimum you should be doing. If you’re not following these guidelines, you could be putting your digital life at risk. PMP #135: Every job I've ever had (and what I learned from each)
I find it fascinating when you look back at your life, particularly your childhood, and identify moments that give you clues about what kind of person you’re going to turn into. At the time, you usually don’t realise it’s a significant moment. But when you look back later, these tiny little things stand out as pivotal forks in the road, where, had you made a different decision, you life may have been radically different. I thought it would be interesting to list every job I’ve ever had and identify some of these moments. When you do this, it’s interesting to be able to look back and think about the lessons you learned that turned you into the person you are today. If you’d like to share any big lessons you’ve learned from your previous jobs, please leave me a comment on the blog. This is the first in a 2-part series about how I plan my week and how my week actually played out. Stay tuned for part 2 coming next week... The weekly review is a process you follow at the end of each week to reflect on your progress, review the status of your projects and plan the upcoming week(s). My weekly review takes place on a Friday afternoon. I make it the last thing I do each week as it’s a really nice way to close out a week of work. It also means I can go into the weekend and start the new week nice and relaxed knowing that I’ve planned the upcoming week. PMP #132: How to manage all your ideas
Do you ever feel overwhelmed by ideas? I do. Most of us have lists of ideas in a note somewhere, but very rarely do we act on them. Ideas hit us all the time and usually sound great at the time. The trouble with all these ideas is in working out which ones are good and should be prioritised first, and which ones are bad and shouldn’t be worked on at all. The excitement about a new idea can cause is to spend time on things that we later realise shouldn’t have been done in the first place. Or, the overwhelm caused by having too many ideas can result in decision fatigue and not doing anything at all. By taking a few simple steps, you can more effectively prioritise your time and plan how and when to work on all your ideas. PMP #130: Is too much self-development a bad thing?
If you’re listening to this post, you’re probably someone that’s interested in self-development. Whether that’s being more productive, being happier, being better at your job or growing your business. But do you ever feel that because you’re chasing constant improvement you feel like you’re not good enough? And just to be clear, I’m not saying that self-development is a bad thing. PMP #127: Execution vs. Perfection: Where are you on the spectrum?
Recently, the members in my VIP Slack group and I were on a group call. We were talking about this idea of where you lie on the “execution «» perfectionism” spectrum. In other words, do you focus more on executing on ideas and getting work done or do you often get stuck in a state of paralysis due to a need to make everything perfect? It’s an interesting idea because it doesn't matter which end of the spectrum you’re at, if you’re too far one way, it’s generally not good. You really want to try and find a sweet spot somewhere in the middle. PMP #121: Let's talk about Bitcoin
Normally, I don't talk about investments or finance on my blog or podcast. But I find Bitcoin is such an interesting topic that I've wanted to explore for a while.I am by no means a Bitcoin expert. I would describe my understanding as slightly above average. So, to do this topic justice, I've roped in my good friend, Denym Bird, who is one of the people that introduced me to this incredible technology. If you don't know anything about Bitcoin and want to learn more, this is the episode for you. Bitcoin excites me so much and I believe it could become the first universally adopted global currency. If this happens, it will cause a radical change in global economics and will take power away from governments and central banks. Self-doubt is a feeling everyone can relate to. PMP #115: Automation Interview with Zapier CEO, Wade Foster
When the team at Zapier reached out to me and asked if I'd like to interview the CEO, Wade Foster, I was like: “Um, heck yeah!”. If you've followed my work for even a short period of time, you'll probably be aware of how much I LOVE to automate my business and life using tools like Zapier. The way I look at it, why waste time on small mundane tasks when a tool like Zapier can handle them for you? A lot of people get stuck with Zapier because it comes with a bit of a learning curve. But let me tell you; it's well worth putting in some time to learning how to use it. The amount of time it's saved me to date is astronomical and I can't begin to describe the satisfaction I get from having systems set up to do work for me in the background. PMP #114: Getting started with "virtual consulting" in 2019
Consulting has changed my life (and I don't make this statement lightly). By starting a consulting business I've been able to build a business that supports me and my family that gives me the freedom to work on my terms, when and where I want. This episode is a talk I gave for ProdCon in January 2019 where I share how to get started as a "virtual consultant" in 2019. If you want to start an online business, I'd highly recommend you consider starting a consulting business. Why? Well, it's much quicker to earn an income via consulting than it is from other revenue streams like digital product sales or affiliate marketing. PMP #112: How To "reduce Friction" in your work environment
After my interview with Miles last week, I got thinking about how to improve my home office set up. In the interview, we briefly discussed Mileses recording set up and after recording, I went about improving my own home office. One of the things Mile’s said that really struck a chord with me was this idea of “reducing friction”. PMP #106: Interview With Paul Jarvis author of Company of One
In this podcast episode,  I'm very excited to be interviewing one of my favourite online people - Paul Jarvis. As well as having a super cool first name (yep, I went there), Paul is someone I've looked up to for the last few years. Paul has been operating a company of one for over 20 years. He comes from a web design and development background and now spends his time helping people to grow better (not bigger) businesses. Paul is an online course creator. In fact, I purchased his awesome course, Grow Your Audience, earlier this year and LOVED it! And Paul is now working on his first book, Company of One. For years, Paul has been challenging popular ideas surrounding growth. His article, Happiness and gravy, had a big impact on me and I can safely say that Paul has helped shape the direction of my business. PMP #105: How and when to use notes
Having worked with hundreds of clients to help optimise their productivity tools, I keep coming across some common mistakes that people tend to make with notes. The issue I see is that people tend to overuse notes. That’s right. I think people consider notes to be “everything apps” that can handle everything to do with their productivity (read more about why you shouldn’t overlap your productivity tools). However, I find this means you end up using notes more than you should either because you're storing the wrong type of information in notes, or using notes when other types of apps may be better suited for the job. This results in a productivity system that’s less organised or efficient as it could be. So, here I am to clear things up and explain how, when and why to use note apps. PMP #104" 16 Tacticss for spending less, earning more and living a "rich" life
If you've followed me for a while you'll know I'm all about living a happier, healthy lifestyle where I can live on my terms. PMP #103: Adjusting to Dad life
Our little boy Jay is now just over 4 weeks old. I can safely say that the last month has been a rollercoaster of emotion and there really is nothing that can prepare you for becoming a parent. In this episode, I'd like to share my experience of what the last 4 weeks have been like and how I'm adjusting to my new role as a Dad (seeing that word, "dad" on the screen and associating that label with my identify still feels weird). When you sign up to my email list, as part of my onboarding emails, I ask subscribers a very simple question: What does “success” mean to you? PMP #100: I get interviewed for the big 100!
Wow… Here we are at the 100th episode for the podcast. I wasn't really sure what to do for this episode. As a bit of a milestone, I thought I should do something special. Then, right on cue, my good friend Joseph Fenity, asked if he could "hijack" my show and interview me for the 100th episode. I was a little hesitant at first but gave in after Joseph wouldn't quit. PMP #99: Do you need money to start a side-business?
There’s a big misconception out there that you need loads of money to start a business. PMP #98: Side-hustle discussion panel
Last week I took part in a side-hustle discussion panel where myself and a bunch of super smart online entrepreneurs got together to talk about the challenges of starting a side-business. The panel was put together by my friends Tom Morkes and Cary Richards. What's more, Cary recently invited me to contribute to his "Side-Hustle Toolbox". This is a collection of e-courses and resources designed to help side-hustlers to get started and build their side business. I'm contributing my own How to become a "virtual consultant" program (normally $300-400). You can get my program along with $4,000 worth of other courses and material for just $47! Yep, you read that right! That's over 98% off! I told Cary this is way too cheap and you could easily charge a lot more for all these awesome courses but he wouldn't listen. PMP #97: My 15 favourite (free and Paid) productivity tools
I get asked all the time about what apps and tools I use to be more productive and to run my business. And I’m a big fan of using the right tool for the right job instead of overlapping your tools and creating a confusing productivity system (which is why I created my productivity blueprint). This is my list of my absolute favourite productivity tools. I’ve grouped them by free and paid apps, although it’s worth noting that a lot of the tools that I started using for free I know pay for in order to get more features. PMP #96: How independent workers can price their services
As an independent worker, learning how to properly price your service is MUST. Since starting my consulting business back in mid-2016 I’ve experimented with a number of different pricing methods. In fact, just last month I started experimenting with a completely new way of pricing my services. Pricing is a tricky topic. There are loads of ways you can price your services and the pricing method you choose depends on a number of factors like the nature of your work, your costs, the time required, industry and the purchasing power of your clients. To this day I use a variety of pricing models depending on the client's needs and budget. This is why one of the first things I do when someone approaches me to get help with consulting is book an introductory call. On this call, my goal is to understand the client's needs so I can give them a few options that suit their requirements and budget. In this episode, I’d like to discuss the different ways you can price your services and the pros and cons of each. PMP #95: How to start "life tracking"
Last week I talked about how to track your time. The premise here is that time tracking is a great way of measuring how productive you're being and identifying sources of distraction. However, you need to track your time and put this information to good use in order to make the effort of tracking worthwhile. The same is true of life tracking. “Life tracking” is my term for tracking the broader aspects of your life like your health, fitness, sleep, exercise, weight, finances, and habits. By tracking the different aspects of your life you can identify habits and trends that are helping or hindering your personal happiness, health, and wellbeing. PMP #92: Create an easy to manage productivity system and don’t overlap your apps
I often get approached by readers or clients who are having trouble maintaining their productivity system. I get asked about how and when to use email, notes, task lists, document folders and the calendar and whether it’s okay to use your email as a to-do list or notes for sorting documents. The problem here is that your blur the boundaries between when to use notes vs. tasks or email vs. the calendar etc. This can result in a situation where you don’t know which app to turn to when trying to retrieve important information. For example, if you’re reviewing a meeting, it gets confusing when some of your notes are kept in Evernote or Apple Notes and other notes are in your task list. This is the guiding philosophy behind my own productivity system. I talk about this more in my productivity blueprint, which you can download here: Show notes » PaulMinors.com/92 Download my productivity blueprint and learn the processes and tools I use to be more organised and achieve more in my business and home life. PMP #93: How to “multiply outcomes” and double your productivity
One of the ways I try to increase my effectiveness and efficiency is by “multiplying outcomes”. I literally just made up this phrase but what I mean is when you do some work, you can multiply the benefits of that work by making the outputs go further. The idea here is that you’ve already done some work and this is now a “sunk” cost. In economics, this is a cost that you can’t get back. So, how can you get more bang for your buck by extending the output of that work? PMP #91: How someone who's super organised deals with the unknown
You probably know that I’m someone who’s very organised. I live by my calendar, not just for client appointments but I block out time for most of the tasks I’m working on as well. But now we have this baby on the way. Hayley is 33 weeks pregnant and realistically the baby could decide to come early. For all I know, this time next week we could have our baby. As someone who’s lived by his calendar for the last 6 years, not knowing how to plan for something that could happen at any time is difficult. PMP #90: 5 Questions to ask new potential clients
Getting new clients is one of the hardest parts of going out on your own as a freelancer, consultant or coach. This is the part of the job that often holds people back. TPP #75: Is routine good?
One of the reasons we enjoy taking time off and going on vacation is that we get to temporarily step outside of our normal routines. But we often get to the end of that holiday, thinking: “I’m looking forward to getting back into a good routine”. Weird right?! Right off the bat, I’m going to say “Yes, it’s good to have routine”. But I thought it would be worth discussing the pros and cons of following a routine and whether there’s any benefit to breaking routine altogether. TPP #71: How to create "focussed work" conditions
Dealing with distractions is one of the most common issues I hear people talk about when it comes to productivity. Especially if you work in an office environment, you’re almost guaranteed to have your work disrupted by someone or something in the office hijacking your attention. On top of that, finding time to focus in between meetings, phone calls, email exchanges, instant messages and other distractions is almost impossible. TPP #69: 6 Reasons why getting up early is hyper-productive
Getting up early is a common trait among many of the worlds top CEOs, creatives and top-performers. Jocelyn Glei, Editor-in-Chief at 99U has found this trait is nearly always present among the most productive people. If you'd like more productive hours in your day consider getting up early and working from 5-6am (which is one of my favourite times of the day). Now, I'm not saying that if you don't get up early or if you prefer to work late at night that you're an unproductive person. At the end of the day, you need to do what works for you. In saying that, if you're a night owl, here are some reasons why you should reconsider your late night habits. TPP #63: Side-hustle success story (and lessons learned)
This is a blog post (and podcast) I’ve been dreaming of writing for quite a while (and in fact, is a little overdue). When I first started my side-hustle back in October 2014 I was working full-time in a marketing position. I had a good job, but I always wanted to work for myself; be my own boss, set my own hours (working a lot less than 40 hours per week) and work on projects that I care about. I’d get up at 5am each day and hustle as much as possible before work. During the day, I would watch the clock and be itching to get back home and continue working on my business. I would dream about writing a post like this where I could share my story and transition from full-time job to independent entrepreneur. I also know how hard it can be to leave your job and make the leap to full-time self-employment. And I know how many people out there are still struggling through what I had to go through. If this is you, I hope you can read this post and gain some insights on how to make your own transition to indie-entrepreneur. The good news is that I'm working on a new project that's going to help you to replicate what I've done... At this point, I’d like to point out, these are things I’ve spent time on in the past, but have had trouble sustaining over the long run. TPP #52: 8 Productivity archetypes: Choose your work style (and get more done)
In this episode, I’d like to talk about 8 different productivity archetypes i.e. different ways of doing your work. The interesting thing is, you may not fit just one archetype. It’s likely that you’ll chop and change how you work based on the projects you’re working on. I wanted to invite Brittany on the show as I’m keen to connect with my audience and put a spotlight on their work. Brittany’s enthusiasm and motivation is really inspiring and I love that she’s executing on her goals, despite a lack of time (we all know how that feels right). 1. TPP #47- Why you shouldn't sell your time with Ryan Waggoner
In this episode of the Productivity Podcast, I talk to Ryan Waggoner who’s a master freelancer and expert on how to earn more in the time that you have. One of my biggest takeaways from the episode is why and how to move away from charging hourly to using “value pricing” and charging based on the outcomes that clients are looking for. Even if you’re not a freelancer, I’m sure you’ll get a lot of value from this episode as you listen to Ryan’s productivity processes. And if you’ve ever considered freelancing or earning a side-income from some skill that you have, then be sure to give this episode a listen as it’ll help you to avoid a lot of the mistakes that people often make when charging out their time. Show notes: PaulMinors.com/47 1) Who is Ryan Waggoner and what do you do? (3:15) 2) How did you transition from full-time work to freelancing? TPP #46: Are we doing it all wrong? Achievement vs. fulfilment
In a recent episode of the Tim Ferriss podcast, Tim interviewed the world famous performance coach, Tony Robbins. In the interview, Tony makes a great case for shifting your focus from achievement and a goal orientated mindset to fulfilment and being happy with what you do (skip forward to 42:08 to listen to this part). Robbins argues that when you focus on achievement, you’re never going to be satisfied as you want more. That’s the thing with focusing on achievement; if your happiness depends on achieving things, you’ll never be happy as you have to achieve more and more. In this episode of the Productivity Podcast, I talk to Amy Oestreicher all about how to overcome the physical and mental challenges that life can throw at you. TPP #43: 8 Productivity experts confess the mistakes they still make
“I don’t have time” is one of the most common struggles I hear people talk about. It’s easy to feel frustrated and overwhelmed when we try to be more organised and plan out our days only to have the plan ruined by endless distractions. As we try to catch up, we get further away from actually accomplishing our goals and end up spending less time on the things we really care about. The good news is, you’re not alone… Today I’d like to share the mistakes that productivity experts from around the world still get caught out by.
