Breaking Through Revenue Plateaus: GTM Strategies with Mary Grothe

In this episode, Matt had a fascinating conversation with Mary Grothe, CRO at Payroll Network, Founder of House of Revenue®, Keynote Speaker, and Forbes Books Author.

They chatted about Mary’s journey to revenue success as she builds up the processes and people required to scale revenue across Branding, Marketing, Sales, Customer Success (CS), and Revenue Operations (RevOps)

They also talk about the following and more:

  • Go-To-Market Tactics to Kickstart Your Revenue Engine

  • Tools and Funnels in Building Prospects

  • Core Components of a Revenue Engine

  • Recruiting Top Talents

  • Mary Grothe's Books

  • Being Open Faith-Based Entrepreneurs

  • Potential challenges or considerations related to the use of AI in business

Three Takeaways

1. If you are a founder who struggles with sales, it's important to recognize the value that sales can bring to your business. To overcome this challenge, you may want to consider finding a co-founder or partner who has a skillset that complements yours and can help you with sales.

2.  Finding the right tools and funnels will help you scale. Technology should be built around the processes and behavior that people need to use it, not the other way around.

3. While AI can assist in organizing and presenting new content, it is crucial to exercise caution and maintain awareness that the final output should reflect your own voice and ideas

Marcus Sheridan: How you can become the most trusted voice in your space | They Ask, You Answer

In this episode, Matt had a great conversation with Marcus Sheridan, a legend in the digital marketing world and the author of the famous book "They Ask, You Answer", who will also be a keynote on the upcoming IPPA Spring Summit attendees.

They chatted about how crucial it is to have someone in the company own your content process so you can scale up, how you can become the most trusted voice in your space, as well as how this applies to the payroll industry. They also talk about the following and more:

  • Ownership of your content strategy
  • How to crush videos in 2023 and beyond
  • Using the right platforms for sales and marketing
  • What Marcus would change if he was rewriting his book "They Ask, You Answer" in 2023?
  • What should the IPPA Spring Summit attendees expect?

Three Takeaways:

  1. If you want to crush with videos in 2023 and beyond getting an in-house videographer is a game changer.
  2. Video is not just one of the things you just get overnight, like any other skill, you learn how to tell and show a story.
  3. One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is buying into the unrealistic notion that they need to "be everywhere." You're much better off focusing on one platform and doing it exceptionally well.

How to create 24 pieces of quality content in only 30 minutes a day

How to create 24 pieces of quality content in only 30 minutes a day

You have probably asked the question at some point - how the heck does that person create so much content? Don’t they ever work!?

The answer to that is another question; how can you create one piece of content that can be reused in ten different ways?

The more time you spend creating content, the more you understand how people do this.

Pillar content. That’s how.

What is pillar content?

Pillar content is the primary piece of content that can then be reused in other formats. Examples include podcasts, newsletters, books, and videos.

In this episode, Matt breaks down his process for creating a lot of quality content every week. Enjoy!

What is embedded payroll and what does it mean for the industry?

What is embedded payroll and what does it mean for the industry?

In this episode, Matt walks through the emerging market of embeddable payroll platforms, a unique new trend in the payroll industry. This is something that we have to be familiar with for us to know how to play in the new era of payroll technology.  Matt covers the following and more in this episode:

  • What are Embeddable Payroll Platforms?
  • Who are the major players today?
  • Who are their target audiences?
  • The current stage or maturity level of this technology and where is it going.

Three Takeaways

  1. Embeddable payroll systems are back-end APIs that are made to help vertical software companies to embed payroll directly into their platform.
  2. It's not necessarily anything new compared to what we're used to in this market, it's just a new approach.
  3. Though this is getting high valuations and raising tons of money, there might still be a handful of problems, such as getting the people set up, selling it, as well as the attachment rate, or how many of them actually opt in once things are set up.

  • Company growth through starting ASO
  • External and internal definitions of ASO
  • Pricing strategies and what they each include in their offering
  • How to differentiate in the market

Three Takeaways

  1. You have to be cheap or create immense value.
  2. While ASO's have been around for a long time, there is still a ton of opportunity to grow in this space.
  3. The moment you achieve consistency in your organization and establish a process, you will see the results you seek almost immediately.

How to increase payroll sales | Where to start and how to approach building your sales engine

In this episode, Matt answers the following question from a client: I don't have my own sales person on staff because I'm just starting off but I really need to push on getting new clients. Any tips or tricks you can share?

Matt shares how to approach this question based on your target market, stage of business, and sales experience. You will learn how to spend your time to get the most from the investment.

Three Takeaways:

  • The CEO/ founder is the best and only person that should be selling in the early days if you are bootstrapped. You have the passion, the vision, the knowledge.
  • Understand the sales cycle of your target client - small businesses can sign today, mid-market are group purchases that have an extended sales cycle.
  • Nothing matters more than sales when you are starting. Nothing happens until someone sells something! In the early stage, you need to plant as many seeds as possible and get your logo in front of as many people as possible. Get out of the office and meet people.

✨I love this current season of life. I spent most of my adult life in the pharmaceutical industry in a fast-paced compounding pharmacy. I loved my job but something was missing. It took me ten years and A LOT of stepping out of my comfort zone, but I finally found my dream job.

✨Outside of work, I love to volunteer with various organizations. I adore working on service projects to benefit others in my community. In 2017, I worked with the March of Dimes and helped raise over $72,000, and in 2018, we raised over $60,000 in a single event. In 2019, I helped raise over $52,000 in sponsorships for Charity Ball hosted by the Junior Auxiliary. That event raised over $100,00 to support projects in our area.

✨When I'm not working or volunteering, I just like being with my family. I have two little boys and love to find ways to explore the great outdoors with them. I also LOVE getting to know new people! The Riches are in the Niches - How to Target Niches with Lucy Flinn, Sonya Ahola, and Brian McVicker | Live from IPPA 2022

The Riches are in the Niches - How to Target Niches with Lucy Flinn, Sonya Ahola, and Brian McVicker | Live from IPPA 2022

It is often said, "the riches are in the niches". So, why are so many people scared to niche down? Is it FOMO? Is it because you cannot scale a niche? What does it mean to even target a niche?

In this session, Matt interviews
Lucy Flinn, Sonya Ahola, and Brian McVicker to learn how to leverage your existing relationships and turn them into a niche where you can prosper.

You will get real-world examples of companies that have leveraged the power of niches to create riches and how you can do the same.

We recorded this episode live from the IPPA conference in Las Vegas on March 4th, 2022.

Three Takeaways

1. To be successful, you must niche down and focus on a few target markets. You should focus on just a few because you cannot be an expert on everything.

2. Examine your customer base and determine which verticals are proving to be the most successful, and then focus on those.

3. One key success factor in niching down is the cross-business unit collaboration, particularly between marketing and sales, because both work very closely in identifying target personas and the ideal company profile.

Hiring a Virtual Assistant | Should you leverage offshore talent to grow your payroll company?

Hiring a Virtual Assistant | Should you leverage offshore talent to grow your payroll company?

A lot of people are interested in leveraging offshore talent to move their business forward. While this is not a new thing, there are still a lot of limiting beliefs about what you can get help with from offshore teammates.

People are worried about the level of skill, getting screwed over, worried about the quality of the work, don’t trust the systems, and don’t know how to get started.

We are going to help you navigate this. We have completed over 100 contracts with offshore assistants and specialists ranging from general virtual assistants to highly skilled professionals.

We have spent well into the six figures with offshore talent over the last few years and it provides a nice supplement to our local team.

Our mindset is that we can create far more “onshore” jobs by leveraging contract talent to help us grow. In this episode we covered the following and more:

  • The types of tasks and projects you can offshore
  • Where to find remote talent
  • How to set your offshore teammates (and yourself) up for success
  • Lessons learned from our experience and how to apply it yourself

Three Takeaways

  1. Creating clear expectations and SOP's is the only way to have success with offshore assistants.
  2. Be diligent and patient when hiring. Make sure you have a process in place for evaluating talent.
  3. Your offshore team should be a supplement to your local team and do basic tasks to start and grow over time.

Tips for hiring remote employees | Best practices for hiring remote employees

Tips for hiring remote employees | Best practices for hiring remote employees

In this episode, Matt shares how to find remote teammates. Hiring remote employees can lead to a lot more work, can create some unique issues when determining who is a good fit, and you can make bad hires just as easy.  We cover how to define what you are looking for, where to find people, how to actively recruit, and how to be efficient with your time.

  • I am taking the perspective of the small business owner here, so I will do my best to let you know what can (and should be delegated) and what you should do yourself.
  • We are going to discuss everything leading up to the interviews. This is the sourcing phase. How do we find the talent to fill the funnel?

Three Takeaways

  1. Create an employee persona. If you don’t have a clear definition of the type of candidate that can fill the role, you will end up wasting a lot of time on the wrong candidates.
  2. Make sure you do not create some generic posting! Use some copywriting skills that will entice the reader to apply and properly represent your culture. You can also make a quick culture video - use Loom or some other tool. It doesn’t need to be well-produced!
  3. Don’t sit back and wait. Be proactive. With such a large talent pool at your disposal, you can spend a lot of time if you’re not careful.

Should You Hire Remote Workers? | The Pros and Cons of Hiring Remote Teammates

Should You Hire Remote Workers? | The Pros and Cons of Hiring Remote Teammates

In this episode, Matt gets into some of the pros and cons of hiring remote teammates along with his own personal experience leading a hybrid team. He discusses the following and more!

  • Growing a remote workforce is a trend that was accelerated by Covid-19 but it can be scary if you are used to the old way of doing things.
  • How do you hire, retain, and engage top talent while maintaining compliance across state lines? This can be a big challenge for small businesses.
  • We are going to be going through a series on remote work where we will address all areas including recruiting, hiring, performance management, and even terminations. Today we are going to kick it off with should you hire remote workers.

Three Takeaways

  1.  Remote hiring reduces wasted time and people can be productive, however, it also makes it harder to get people to collaborate.
  2.  It's important to know the people you're hiring in the respect of knowing what's the right thing for them. Knowing the reality of why do they like or dislike working remotely.
  3. Be extra intentional about culture when everybody is remote because you don't have control over the influences around them. Think about how you can keep culture top of mind in a remote environment.

How to Get More Referrals | A Proven Method

In this episode, Matt shares how your payroll company can get more referrals and build out a referral program. He discusses the following and more!

Three Takeaways

  1. When you go to the bank for the first time, you can't just walk in and ask for money; you have to make deposits first. The same is true with referral relationships; you have to make some deposits first by offering real value before being able to earn a referral.
  2. Giving a clear snapshot of what your target client accounts look like and becoming a specialist in one industry will make it easier for you to be referred by your referral partners.
  3. Once you've made enough deposits to your referral partners, it's ok to ask. You'll never get any referrals if you don't ask but don't just ask any general questions, ask specific questions.

In this episode, Matt chats with Karen Altman about year-end marketing strategies. Karen is the Director of Marketing at guHRoo and she oversees all marketing initiatives. In this episode, Matt and Karen discuss the following and more:

  • The goals and marketing strategies for the 4th quarter of 2021
  • Marketing successes and failures
  • Potential marketing obstacles and opportunities during selling season
  • How to earn trust by providing superior value

Three Takeaways

  1. It takes seven hours of interaction with a prospect on average to win a new deal. Using automation and content allows you to create trust and value without having to talk to all of your prospects for seven hours.
  2. Ensuring we're in front of our current clients and meeting their needs is just as important as trying to attract new clients. Client retention and referrals can be your biggest revenue drivers.
  3. The more you give, the more opportunities you will create. If you consistently give out valuable information, you'll earn trust, and your brand will become known for being more than simply a commodity.

Three Takeaways

  1. Acquisitions allow you to grow faster than organic growth and provide built-in infrastructure and opportunities for operational improvement.
  2. Don’t ignore the obvious downsides of a deal. The light will shine on all aspects of a deal before it closes.
  3. Deals are not as hard to finance as you think. The SBA programs are not only good financing mechanisms but also help to evaluate the deal itself.

The Value of Niching Down | How Mike Ritzema Grew a Niche Payroll Company

In this episode, Matt chats with Mike Ritzema about niching down and focusing on one industry. Mike Ritzema is the President and founder of Superior Trucking Payroll Service. In this episode, Matt and Mike discuss the following and more:

  • "The riches are in the niches" - how to stay focused on one industry.
  • Should you create your own software? Pros and cons of programming your own software.
  • Anyone who is an expert in everything, is an expert in nothing. Stay in your lane.
  • How to get traction in a niche.

Three Takeaways

  1. You have a larger addressable market by niching to an industry vs. going local. Mike could never sell to all the trucking companies. Don't have a scarcity mindset.
  2. When you focus on one industry or niche, you create *positive* forced constraints. You are marketing, serving, and speaking directly to your target audience at all times.
  3. There is less competition when you are focused on one industry. You differentiate naturally and can better serve your target market. It is easier to acquire customers, hire, and grow.

How a Shorter Work Week Improved Fivable's Productivity

How a Shorter Work Week Improved Fivable's Productivity

In this episode, Matt talks with Bryan Murdaugh at Fivable about going to a 4 day work week. Fivable adopted a rotating 4-day work week as an experiment back in May 2020.

In February 2020, Fivable was 100% co-located in their Irmo, SC office. After the 4 day work week implementation, in August 2020 Fivable was located in 4 states, 3 time zones, and just one or two members of their team will find their way into the office during the day.

Fivable’s 4 day work week experiment worked well enough that they are still on that same schedule today. Fivable saw productivity increase, employees needing less PTO, and an overall happier environment.

Listen as Matt and Bryan discuss what the 4 day work week looks like and how Fivable implemented the change while balancing the needs of their clients.

Here are some topics that are covered.

  • The initial results seen in productivity when Fivable made the 4 day work week switch.
  • How The Fivable 4 day work week was structured in order to still meet client needs.
  • Tools to make remote work successful
  • What would Bryan change about the process of going to a 4 day work week?
  • What Are Some Simple Automations To Fix Dull Mundane Tasks

About the Guest Bryan Murdaugh

Bryan is a web nerd. He started Fivable in March 2010 to make the web a more beautiful place. That appreciation for beauty has shaped the web into a more useful place. Bryan helps businesses to reach more people, improve the way their business moves data, or tell their business story with eloquence.

Fivable has been particularly successful with innovative hardware startups, service companies, and non-profits afraid they're limiting growth by using paper-based systems, frustrated that their teams depend on multiple systems that don't talk to each other or have a great idea to make their product connect to cloud-based data capture systems. At the end of the day, Fivable creates well-fitting web software systems that help their clients save time, minimize frustration, and maximize profitability.
