Jeffrey Walsh served in Maphoitsile, South Africa from 2016 to 2018 as an education volunteer. He learned Tswana, one of the 12 dominant languages in the country. His life of service has allowed him to be sworn-in at least 6 times from 1990 to 2020. (Army enlistment, Army reenlistment, Army National Guard, Peace Corps, Americorps and FEMA). His service was filled with unique and special moments and opportunities including the moment he received the name of Tebogo which means gratitude. Over ten years ago, Jesse Bailey packed his bags, flew over the Atlantic  ocean and landed in Morocco where he spent the next 27 months as a  health volunteer. The cultural and history richness of this African  country is reflected not only on its breathtaking landscapes and  beautiful people, but also on the languages spoken and currencies used.  Jesse learned his local Berber dialect, Tamazight, as well as survival  Arabic and some French in order to get around and be able to communicate  whenever he traveled. Rachele Lopez’s world was turned upside down after studying abroad in Belize and knew that she wanted more than what a classroom could offer. Her Mexican candy and tajin helped flavor her 3 years of service in Zambia where she worked in aquaculture projects, and spent a great deal working in malaria education and youth empowerment. Chanel Jimenez talks about how her life changed drastically in roughly 48 hours from the moment she learned she was going to be evacuated to landing back in Texas. She served in Panama from 2019-2020 as a TELS (Teaching English Leadership Life Skills) volunteer where she spent 50% of her time teaching English and the other 50% working with youth. Even though her service wasn’t the full 27 months, Chanel still had the time to enjoy carnavales, being closer to nature and developed awesome relationships with her host families and teachers at her school.

Jim tells us about his journey to join the Peace Corps, how his service was cut short due to political unrest in Madagascar back in 2002 and how his experience in that beautiful country has led him to live there for the last 7 years. Jim is a great storyteller and we hope our audience laughs with his funny anecdotes as much as we did!

Salena goes back to memory lane to talk about what her life was like at her site of 2 years Mahasoabe and the challenges she faced as she transitioned to her third-year extension on the other side of the country (Toliara). Karol Lopez gives us an insight on how her 3-year service from 2015-2018 in Madagascar changed her life forever.
