Atrial Fibrillation- May 2021

You're listening to season 2 of the Penny's Hill Practice podcast! We are back after an a small break! Welcome back!

In this episode, Dr Geoff Hamp and Dr Sam McGinley look at atrial fibrillation.

Did you know that if you have atrial fibrillation you are 5 times more likely to have a stroke? And that 1 in 5 strokes in the UK are caused by atrial fibrillation? However, if your atrial fibrillation is diagnosed, there is medication that can reduce that risk?

Sounds easy, doesn't it? But what are the symptoms of atrial fibrillation? How would you know you have it? And just how do you take your pulse accurately?

Well, in this episode we will cover these questions and more!

To have a look at Arrhythymia Alliance's Know Your Pulse campaign, have a look at their site here.

And why not have a listen to our very popular podcast on blood pressure and how to take your blood pressure here. To hear our episode on low fat diets, have a listen here and on losing weight listen here. In the Christmas kitchen with Sam and Geoff - December 2020

In the Christmas kitchen with Sam and Geoff - December 2020

This is the first Christmas 2020 episode of the Penny's Hill Practice Podcast.

In this episode, Dr Geoff Hamp and Dr Sam McGinley are in their kitchens and are cooking up some healthier christmas treats! After our popular episode on low fat diets (click here to hear that one) we have decided to see if we can make the traditional christmas treats just a little healthier!

With help from the British Heart Foundation and from Diabetes UK, join Sam and Geoff as they don their aprons, preheat their ovens, grease their tins and get baking.

If you want to give Geoff's recipe a go, then have a look at the British Heart Foundation website here but you will also find more recipe ideas here too.

However, if you want to give Sam's recipe a go, then have a look at the Diabetes UK website here but you will also find some more recipe ideas here too.

Pictures are available to see on our website here www.pennyshillpractice.co.uk/news.

If you want to try some of the recipes the team from Sorted Food gave us, then click the links below:

  • Sautéed sprouts which could be steamed instead of sautéed once shredded and then tossed with dried fruit, nuts, seasoning and a splash of cider vinegar before serving
  • Braised and spiced red cabbage - leave out the sugar and rely on the wonderful natural sugars in the orange juice and cider
  • Roast potatoes - a wonderful crunch comes from polenta instead of excessive fat when cooking and these are amazing if fresh herbs are tossed in at the end
  • Roasted roots and without too much oil and no honey, the natural sugars will bring out sweetness once roasted and will taste extra special if you toss them in a little wholegrain mustard

Alcohol - November 2020

This episode of the Penny's Hill Practice Podcast covers the topic of alcohol awareness.

In this episode, Dr Geoff Hamp and Dr Sam McGinley discuss alcohol awareness, in readiness for Alcohol Awareness Week 2020, which runs from 16-22 November 2020.

Around 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year, and drinking too much or too often can increase this risk, but many people are unaware of the link between alcohol and mental health problems. Drinking too much or too often can mask or enhance other underlying mental health problems such as anxiety or depression and prevent them from being properly addressed.

We discuss alcohol awareness and mental health and what you can do if you are struggling.

The sites we mention in the podcast are Mind, who provide advice and support to empower anyone experience a mental health problem as well as campaigning to improve services, raise awarness and promot understanding of mental health issues, and Alcohol Change, the UK charity formed from the merger of Alcohol Concern and Alcohol Research UK, and who try to improve knowledge of alcohol harm, improve policy and regulation, shift cultural norms, improve drinking behaviours and provide more and better support and treatment of alcohol problems,

This episode of the Penny's Hill Practice Podcast covers the topic of winter health and how to keep healthy now that winter is here.

In this episode, Dr Geoff Hamp and Dr Sam McGinley discuss winter health as well as who is most at risk from the cold weather.

In the UK, the Government has webpages with really easy accessible information about both Winter Fuel Payments and Cold Weather Payments. There is also a really good leaflet, Keep Warm, Keep Well and we recommend you have a look at this too.

  • I'd like to thank you for starting me off on this journey today. I have struggled over the years with depression, anxiety, overeating, low confidence and low self-esteem. Yesterday I completed the Five Ways Challenge and feel positive about what I achieved. It is helping to give structure to my day and motivating me to learn new strategies to improve my life and how I feel about myself and others around me.
  • Thank you for your emails, they are really helpful. ... thank you for setting these challenges, they've really made me think. ... I've posted letters to my family... I've started learning a language on Duolingo … I am normally the least observant person but thanks to Live Well Dorset, I have started taking notice of my surroundings now … Today I helped a friend. I’m enjoying putting my mind to this 5 day challenge. I made a card for a friend who Is going through a tough time and delivered a little thankyou gift to a neighbour.
  • Because of your email, I walked around the block more briskly... I've started c25k! ... I've been active every day with Joe Wicks... Your emails made me think, I've started exercising again… Thank you for the challenge, I have joined a fitness class online twice a week!
