Perfect Chaos

By David and Ronda Blevins

Learning happens when all the things come together in what can only be described as "Perfect Chaos." Join us as we look at what is going on in education right now and how we can keep finding our perfect chaos. We will cover education from Kindergarten to Post-Doc, pencil and paper to Ed Tech, CTE to Academic, philosophy to practice, and a little of everything in between while having some fun with our particular brand of perfect chaos as we talk.

Episode 47 - Talking about hard things with students

Episode 47 - Talking about hard things with students

In Episode 47, we dive deep into a topic that every educator can relate to: addressing challenging and unexpected real-world issues with our students. As teachers, we know that the classroom isn't always a predictable environment, and it's not uncommon for challenging topics to find their way in, no matter how carefully we plan our lessons. These moments can be some of the most difficult and crucial aspects of our work, as they offer a unique opportunity to help students understand and make sense of the world around them.

Throughout this episode, we explore various facets of this complex issue:

1. How do hard topics make their way into the classroom?

  • We discuss the myriad ways in which current events, news, or social issues can unexpectedly surface in the classroom, even when not initially part of the curriculum.

2. Why is it important for us to address these topics?

  • We delve into the significance of addressing these hard topics, highlighting the value of fostering critical thinking, empathy, and informed citizenship.

3. What landmines could we potentially have to navigate when talking about these hard topics?

  • We acknowledge potential pitfalls, such as navigating differing student opinions, handling emotional responses, and respecting cultural sensitivities.

4. How do we stay neutral on some of the more controversial topics?

  • We provide practical strategies for maintaining a balanced, neutral stance while encouraging students to form their own opinions and engage in meaningful discussions.

5. How do we give students a safe space to have a voice about what is happening in the world around them?

  • We offer tips for creating a classroom environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, asking questions, and expressing their concerns.

Our "Feel Good News of the Week" segment brings a breath of fresh air, as Ronda shares a tip that's easy for everyone to implement. She emphasizes the positive impact of spending time outdoors on our mood and health, and recounts a recent 2-mile walk in the beautiful fall weather. The simple act of surprising students with a quick outdoor break can make a significant difference in their day.

As we wrap up this episode, we want to thank our listeners for joining us in this important conversation. Addressing hard topics with students is a challenge that every educator faces, and by sharing our experiences and insights, we hope to help you navigate these waters with confidence and empathy. Stay tuned for the next episode, and as always, we appreciate your continued support of our podcast.

Perfect Chaos on the Road

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David are ready to go live, but for now we just discuss where we have been and where we are going throughout this summer. From Profession Development that Ronda provided to my faculty and some guests, to the West Tennessee EMS Educators Conference, ISTE, TETA and others. Episode 46 - SEL in the Classroom

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David are branching out and working on bringing the Perfect Chaos Podcast to video land as we bring the topic of SEL in the Classroom into our discussion. Social and Emotional Learning has taken a lot of bad wrap over the last couple of years, and while educators didn't come up with the term we have been working with students for years on what to do. As Ronda says, it isn't appropriate to backhand somebody in the classroom. Feel good/Tip of the Week: We are all in the process of either winding down for the summer, or possibly already started back with summer classes, but one way or another, give you self a few short weeks and then get back into planning. Nothing too massive just a couple of hours each week so that when you return you won't have to feel so overwhelmed. Episode 45 - Life Unscripted

Episode 45 - Life Unscripted

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David are going off script and just talking about the perfect chaos that can occur. While traveling this week, Ronda experienced some of the chaos that can occur and threaten our day, but doesn't that also take into account our plans in the classroom...heck even on the podcast we have a few errors with batteries failing, dogs squeaking, and storms rolling in. So what does your life look like unscripted?

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Give yourself a break, follow-up with last week and take a breath but give yourself some leeway, especially here at the end of the semester.

Episode 44 - Let's Talk about Modeling

Episode 44 - Let's Talk about Modeling

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David are on the topic of Modeling in the classroom. Now we are not talking about finding the best fashionista available and showing off their clothing down the runway, trust me I am not going to be on America's Next Top Model. This is more about being in the front of the classroom and showing the behavior that should be exhibited...Ronda mentioned a couple of times about a kindler, gentler behavior. Do you have to be always on, and can you really use social medias (well we are here so that should answer the second part to that question).

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Coming in hot to the final weeks of class, it may be a good opportunity to take a breath.

Episode 43 - AI in Education

Episode 43 - AI in Education

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David to on the topic of AI in Education. Since the Matthew Broderick movie "Wargames" in the 80's in which Joshua, the personality in the Department of Defense Computer know as the WOPR (War Operations Planning and Response), AI has been a concept that wasn't thought about a whole lot. Even with the AI systems of SIRI and Alexa, or the GPS changes of Waze, it wasn't until some of the newest systems came out that would allow students to write a whole essay through AI that we found problems. Are students going to use it to cheat?

Episode 42 - Avoiding the Ed Tech Burnout

Episode 42 - Avoiding the Ed Tech Burnout

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David take on burnout, and more specifically the topic of burnout when it comes to educational technology.  We take several rabbit holes on this episode including a long conversation about what burnout is, and then we tie it to the ed tech.  Was COVID-19 the starting off spot, or did it just serve as a catalyst to picking up the pace, and how do we address it before it takes us out of our chosen profession and maybe a little further.

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Ronda gets into conversations with those that are exhibiting inappropriate behavior.  Have a conversation, ask why, and see how we can help these individual reframe and get to where they were actually going.

Episode 40 - No More Sage on the Stage

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David take on the topic of Sage on the Stage...you remember what we are talking about.  Remember back to your first University 101 class with 300-400 of your closest friends, where the profession would lecture for an hour straight and walk straight off the stage.  Did you pick up some of that in your teaching style?  Is it a good thing, and if so when and where?

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Throw things away.  All of us have things that a former teacher has given to us, the item that they haven't used in their 25 year career and you probably won't either in yours.  Take the opportunity to throw it away and quit moving the empty pens.  Take a listen to Ronda's tip of the week.

Episode 34 - What about the Extra Stuff

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, we talk about all the extra stuff.  While we certainly can't get to each and every extra thing there is in P-12 and Higher Education, we do talk about many.  From the clubs, to the sports, debate, honor society, honor guards and ROTC to many of the others, what should you take into account before saying yes, and YES you can check things out before saying yes, and what are some of the things you need to be successful.

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Student Numbers.  Have you ever had a Johnny in class, would about 2 or three.  Thing about putting student numbers into place.  Now, we don't mean calling them by those numbers, but looking at keeping things efficient for grading, marking who's extra pencils they are or even just in seating.  Take a listen to Ronda's tip of the week.

Episode 33 - How Do I Get Involved

On this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, we talk about how you can get involved.  From a little bit involved to a lot involved there are many different ways.  This podcast has the ability to be the first in a set of episodes, but alone it will talk about the legislative process when it comes to those that are making the laws that effect teaching.  Is it perfect, absolutely not, but we try to help you get involved.  Have you ever wondered why you know the name of the President, but not of your local representatives, check this episode out.  Let us know what you think.

Feel good/Tip of the Week:  Find your space this week. The one place (not your bed) that you can relax and where you will not do work. For me, I have a chair in our bedroom with a bookshelf, comfy blanket, nice lighting, a view out I love to sit here in the mornings and drink coffee or at night and color on my iPad or read a book (not an educational book) just to relax.

Episode 30 - Perfection, Realism, or Both

Episode 30 - Perfection, Realism, or Both

There is a lot that is swirling about education. Whose fault is it if kids are behind? Whose fault is it there is a shortage? What should teachers be paid? Why are teachers leaving at record numbers? Why should people want to be teachers? All of these things are questions being asked and talked about all over media and social media outlets, and yelled about in political battlegrounds. When we take a look at what we are doing individually, how do we balance a need to be realistic about what is going on and fight for better situations with the need to also have a positive outlook to help us keep on fighting the good fight?

Feel good/Tip of the Week:

Episode 27 - To Certify or not, that is the question...

Ronda and David get behind the mic in the Perfect Chaos Studios this week to record this week's episode of the show, and have a great conversation about certifications.  While we focus on education, we recognize that this is something that can have relevance in other professions such as EMS and the Fire service, computer science, even retail.  Now we aren't talking about the role of initial licensure, and we aren't evening talking about the role of professional development and licensure renewal, this is talking about add on certifications.  Ronda makes mention of several to include KaHoot certifications, Microsoft and Google certifications and some from organizations such as ISTE.  We answer the questions, about why do certifications at all, what are the benefits of certifications, and are all certifications created equal.

Here are some examples of certifications

Kahoot, Bronze, Silver and Gold Certifications: https://kahoot.com/certified/

Google Certified Educator:

Microsoft Certified Educator: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/certifications/microsoft-certified-educator/

*These are just a few examples of educational certifications.  There are many and these are just some that Ronda referenced.

Feel good/Tip of the Week:

In this week's tip, David mentioned a big milestone accomplished by Ronda this week.  Her textbook Educational Technology: Big Ideas and Practical Applications for the Classroom has been completed.  This has been a labor of love, and now they move to the online content, but it will be ready for implementation this Spring.

https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/educational-technology-big-ideas-and-practical-applications-classroom

Episode 26 - Teacher Shortage Part 2

In this week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast, Ronda and David follow-up with the second half of the conversation about data related to the teacher shortage.  We talk about the change in war stories and how they are used, whether we can follow Justin Timberlake's advise and bring the sexy back and end with where do we go from here.

Ronda brought up points from a recent seminar that we hosted about Stress, Mental Health and Chronic disease in how to increase about physical presence, but a lot of the topics help in other areas as well.  To see that seminar, you can view on the Mossy Creek Fitness YouTube at https://youtu.be/dsieSBWCUmI.

In her tips of the week, Ronda mentioned her current project writing an educational technology textbook that will be available for Spring adoption.  You can find out more about Educational Technology: Big Ideas and Practical Applications for the Classroom by visiting this link: https://he.kendallhunt.com/product/educational-technology-big-ideas-and-practical-applications-classroom

David used his tip time to provide a dedication of the week and this week is to educators, whether active or inactive.  Over the past year and a half, you have done everything that has been asked of you and more.  Changed teaching methodologies, focused on making sure to take care of kids and how they were getting taken care of and much more...for each of you, thank you.

Episode 24 - Knowing When to Take A Break

Episode 24 - Knowing When to Take A Break

After summer vacation (not necessarily planned that way) Ronda and David return to the Perfect Chaos microphone as the podcast returns.  In this week's episode we talk about why do we feel the need to fill the need.  A conversation that both Ronda and David have a hard time, but saying no when it is so easy and filling to say yes.

As educators we have a desire to help, and with most institutions from K-12 to Higher Ed, we already have additional responsibilities from bus and lunch duties, to committee assignments and professional development.  Then we add on sports coach, club leader, advisor, counselor and many others.  Hear our thoughts.

Episode 22 - Discussion Masters

Episode 22 - Discussion Masters

Of course, with this title we must be talking about us...or maybe not.

If you have been around education long enough, you know the dreaded phrase, the discussion board post.  Many of your students feel the exact same way, but as we know, the discussion can be an excellent place to determine the students understanding on the topic.  It may even be better than trying to use a quiz or exam to get the information.

It is all about how we use the discussion board, and whether we are able to inspire buy-in from our students.  Try the method Ronda mentions such as the discussion master and let us know what you think.

Episode 21 - How Many Eyes are Looking Back at You

Episode 21 - How Many Eyes are Looking Back at You

This week's episode of the Perfect Chaos Podcast is one that is a little different than most that we have recorded.  We talk about the teacher specifically and the spot of the job description that stated "other duties as assigned."  Teachers have always been held in high esteem, and it is from more than the teachers we teach.  In those other duties, teachers commonly become role models, and much of that behavior must continue even outside of the classroom.  After 20 years of sitting with your eyes glued to the teacher, what do you need to know about when they eyes are on you.

Episode 20 - Not Playing Favorites

Episode 20 - Not Playing Favorites

Sometimes our inspiration comes from others, and this week's episode is just that.  After taking a week off for spring break (no we didn't go anywhere cool), we come back together for an episode based upon a Linked in Post.  Do you take into consideration the rewards your give to ensure that you aren't providing an atmosphere of favoritism.  The individual that asked this question was asking in the context of his profession, and the decision to give crews a "cake" assignment, or simply buying their lunch.  In P-12 and Higher ed, we certainly aren't providing overtime pay, but do we reward others and create or foster the environment of teacher's pet.

Make sure to check out this episode and see our thoughts, thank for the inspiration Mike.
