Shenanigans with Daz (Boothy) & TC (Thos)!

Shenanigans with Daz (Boothy) & TC (Thos)!

Somewhere at an undisclosed location, there may have been a catch up of friends for a someone's 40th birthday...

Darren (Booth) & Tom (Casey) drove the 4.5+ hours each to be here so I thought we should have a casual catch up...

They may or may not have had a couple of beers before I arrived...

Some interesting topics were discussed. Some silly buggers had!

All in all this is just a catch up between friends caught on tape.

I hope you enjoy this off the cuff chat between friends....

Jemma Picco, Registered Cadastral Surveyor (Land Surveyor), Principal Surveyor, Department of Resources

Listen in to our Sunday night LIVE interview from Cairns.

I got to sit down and have an impromptu chat with Jemma Picco, Registered Cadastral Surveyor (Land Surveyor) and her role as the Principal Surveyor at the Department of Resources in Queensland. Amongst all things surveying we also discussed the importance of mentoring formal or informal and being in the position of role model for younger surveyors. We talked about finding old trees and survey marks from surveys in the far north of Australia to managing a team of surveyors.

Growing up in Brisbane, attending an all girls school where her careers advisor handed her a book and said look in this section to find you career... From there Jemma attended Queensland University of Technology completing a double degree.

Ryan Barry, Surveyor, Pacific Surveys

Ryan Barry, Surveyor, Pacific Surveys

Young Surveyor, Ryan hails from South Africa. He is a Surveyor who has travelled to Australia with his wife who was 31 weeks pregnant. Coming from nothing & not being able to pay for university, he had a two year gap before going from his dream of Architecture in High School to enrolling in Cartography. After enrolment, Ryan decided to covert his studies to Surveying. We discuss how companies are not investing in the future generations.  The education system in South Africa and the similarities and differences between the countries. The Power of LinkedIn where he got spotted by a recruiter while working with the company he was employed by until he decided to make the move to Australia on a 457, 2 yr work visa working in regional Australia. With a few false starts he and his pregnant wife took the plunge to move to Port Macquarie working on the W2B Project (Pacific Highway upgrade for 1 yr) in Yamba before moving and settling in Bathurst NSW. He is the father of 2 young boys, both born in Australia and where he & his his beautiful wife now call Australia home, while still maintaining their African roots and contacts with friends and family back home in South Africa.

Working in Canberra before moving to the big smoke (Sydney) to gain more experience in the surveying industry.

We talk about where his career took him traveling across the world and meet some very interesting people and projects. About lifelong learning, helping people and what it’s like working with companies to help streamline and embed Autodesk products into the business. The importance of Cloud based storage. Working globally managing time zones, accents, and how we harness the data and manage the assets.

Tim Laidler, Director of Locate & Map

Tim Laidler, Director of Locate & Map

In my very first face to face interview... shall I say I was very nervous!!

I wasn’t sure if this conversation was going to be had, with the rival of Holden & Ford… But we’re grown adults & put our personal beliefs aside lol.

Tim is the Director of Locate & Map in Sydney specialising in Subsurface Utility mapping . Tim is a second gen surveyor and growing up he always wanted to be a surveyor by taking after his dad, although he did spend some time as directional driller. He has been in the industry for 15 years beginning his career with Lean Lackenby and Hayward & RMS.

Tim and his Team just celebrated 7 years of business, very exciting!!!

We discussed the importance of culture within the business, the average age of his team, at 35 he is OLD, and the importance of inclusiveness and responsibility within the company. Data sharing in the locating industry, Implementation of 3d drain scanning, point cloud data, awareness of emerging technology, coding, mental health, kids, cars, podcasts & more cars. Dave & Adam from Surv3D were mentioned as was Paul & Geoff from Locators, Gordon Bell & Grant Kilpatrick (RIP), Two legends of the Surveying Industry.

With a lot of laughs along the way.

Tim and his team are proud supporters of the Rural Fire Service. If you can help or support them every little bit helps. https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/

A little bit about Peta. Peta is the National Training & Development Manager for Consulting Surveyors National & host of this Podcast, Defining Boundaries. Peta has over 26 years experience within the Surveying profession as a surveyor & educator. She was born in Canberra, the National Capital of Australia but grew up in a small town called Vincentia on Jervis Bay, 2 hours south of Sydney. Thomas Casey, Registered Surveyor & Director, Casey Surveying and Design

Thomas Casey, Registered Surveyor & Director, Casey Surveying and Design

Thomas Casey is a Registered Land Surveyor and owner of Casey Surveying and Design in Parkes NSW. Better known as Tom, TC to his good friends & colleagues & uncle Bot to his family Tom was born in Sydney and he spent his younger years between Sydney, Bathurst & the Central Coast. My initial question to Tom was where he had grown up & his reply was that he’s not entirely sure that he has grown up… check for a special reference to Pretty in Pink… He wasn’t sure what he wanted to be as a grown up but he did know that he didn’t want to be an architect or an engineer, apparently there’s a story behind that so tune in to listen why. He has been in the industry for 28 to 34 years depending on when yo start counting He spent 6 years working in retail to pay his way through university before starting his career as a graduate surveyor & GIS operator with RTA in Parkes. Who would have thought that one of the "little dead beat crew" would end up winning some prestigious awards over the last few years, the first being the Highly commended in 2019 EISSI Awards in the rural cadastral & land titling category and Joint winner in 2021 for in the infrastructure & construction category for his work on the silver city  & cobb highways in the far west of NSW. He described the Silver City work as possibly career defining. He doesn’t have much time for hobbies and as a former low single figure golfer now retired due to old age & football injuries, he dabbles in lawn bowls and would love to get back into his vegie patch again.  You might find Tom on LinkedIn otherwise you'll find him out in the field somewhere in the outback! https://www.linkedin.com/in/thomas-casey-1bb70548/ You can contact me at: https://www.petacox.com     Podcast Support Defining Boundaries: https://www.patreon.com/PetaCox   @definingboundaries https://www.instagram.com/definingboundaries/?hl=en   @surveygeekgirl https://www.instagram.com/surveygeekgirl/?hl=en   https://www.linkedin.com/in/peta-cox   Music by Paul Greene https://www.instagram.com/greenepaul/ Red Shelf Records/Sounds Delicious Australia  https://www.instagram.com/soundsdeliciousaustralia/

Elaine Ball, Geospatial Marketer, Elaine Ball Ltd

With a Surveyor dad, who was a hydrographic & mining surveyor come inventor, he introduced the Ball family to the world of surveying, scanning & a life of overachieving.. With a background in manufacturing of laser survey equipment sold to multiple industries including; Mining, Quarry, Oil & Gas, Aviation, Transportation, Forestry and Surveying. Bruce Baker, Chief Technical Officer & Director at IntelliSpatial & Land Surveys

Bruce Baker, Chief Technical Officer & Director at IntelliSpatial & Land Surveys

Due to poor NBN connection, the audio from this podcast is occasionally at times substandard. I apologies for the poor connection.  You will still enjoy the stories Bruce has to tell. Born in Melbourne, to ten pound pom parents,  Bruce moved around during his younger years across Australia & PNG. His aspirations growing up were to be a pilot. Due to colour blindness, this was an unattainable goal. This led to his career choice, as a surveyor working in the Surveying & Spatial industry. He has had a great career travelling the world & has been in the industry for over 20 years, with a varied career from the water to the land. He is a geospatial professional with a passion for solving problems and developing solutions with the use of information technology. With an enquiring mind he went out into the world with a hunger to learn & he has never stopped learning. He loves all forms of surveying as they all relate to each other & can take you to places you never thought possible. Over the years he has had many positions & titles, this is due to Bruce always looking for the next big thing, or how he can help his employees grow & better themselves.  A recipient of numerous awards, his accomplishments include best outstanding Graduate for his Bachelor of Science from Curtin University, as well as awards as a long term committee member of the Australasian Hydrographic Society (AHS). He enjoys the simple things in life that run parallel with his career such as mountain bike riding & being on the water paddle boarding.  Bruce supports Beyond Blue for mental Heath. Bob Harrison OAM, Registered Surveyor & Director Harrison Friedmann & Associates

Bob Harrison OAM The accidental introverted business owner. Bob is a registered surveyor & director of Harrison Friedmann & Associates. With a career spanning over 50 years, Bob has spent his career with a think positive attitude handed down from his father that has provided Bob with the tools to succeed. Growing up in Hurstville, Bob enjoyed a simple care free childhood. With a thought of a Mechanical Cadetship after school, a brief encounter with a head guidance man steered Bob to completing a Cadetship & part time University to gain his registration in 1973. Attributing Apex Australia, getting along with people in a team & public speaking, helped him come out of his shell & he said wouldn’t be the man he is today without it. He has had Perfect partnerships, been awarded an OAM for his service to the surveying profession & the community, sat on the ACS Committee & ISNSW to name a few. Dr Glenn Campbell, Part 2, Discipline leader & Lecturer at University of Southern Queensland

Dr Glenn Campbell Recorded in December 2020 Discipline leader & Lecturer at University of Southern Queensland, Glenn spent his years growing up in the sunshine state. Born in Brisbane, he spent abt 11 years in Brissy before moving to Townsville in year 7 with his family for a few years. With a weird love for Science & Maths, Glenn completed a Maths & Physics degree before completing his surveying degree. A move to Goondiwindi in his early years of his career, with a young family, he says was the best move of his life at the time. Making Goondi their home, immersing themselves into the community, playing cricket, acting in a 3 man play & producing a few more kids. With no real particular planning of his career and working for a few small surveying companies he eventually chose the educational path. He took a position with USQ and went on to complete his PHD. Support from The Surveyors Trust has been approved for 2021 to help fund the students from the University to travel for residential camps. You can find Glenn on LinkedIn.
