Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Exertion Intolerance Disease - What is it?
Dr. Mark Zinn Founder of the NeuroCognitive Research Institute joined Sebern Fisher to talk about  Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease.  During the presentation Dr. Zinn also covers Long Covid, Brain fog and Cognitive Impairment. Epstein-Barr Virus/Herpes Symplex affects on the immune system. SEID affects your attention and decision making. Hand Grip tests are data points looked at. #functionalmedicine  Mark Zinn, Ph.D., has expertise in quantitative and tomographic EEG methods to test hypotheses in studies involving neurocognitive disorders. For 3 years he served as a medical research consultant at Stanford School of Medicine to study eLORETA correlates of cognitive impairment in Infection-associated chronic diseases. He obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology at DePaul University, where he worked with Dr. Leonard Jason and conducted research studies on patients with ME/CFS. Using eLORETA, he was able to characterize neuronal dysregulation within specific brain regions and brain systems contributing to decreasing arousal levels and disrupting brain network efficiency in patients. By measuring the brain regions involved in controlling the autonomic nervous system, he is testing hypotheses about how the brain dysregulation in those locations bring about patient symptoms. Mark also has a unique perspective with his multi-disciplinary background in piano performance and computer science. Mark received his Bachelor's degree in piano performance at the University of Southern California, magna cum laude. He further obtained a Master of Music degree and performers certificate (artist diploma) in piano performance at Northern Illinois University. Mark subsequently re-specialized in psychology and pursued a doctorate with emphasis in neuroscience. For the past 15 years, he has been an author in numerous publications and given conference presentations related to biofeedback, behavioral medicine, and quantitative EEG. He is now co-director of the NeuroCognitive Research Institute where he and his wife conduct brain research using swLORETA techniques which are aimed at advancing the diagnosis and treatment of neurocognitive diseases . The unique methodology developed in his labs at the Human Brain Institute in St Petersburg (Russia) allows a sophisticated analysis of brain electric activity in resting states and under task conditions. The methodology is described in his book Kropotov, J.D. (2009). Quantitative EEG, event-related potentials and neurotherapy. London: Academic Press. These precise measurements of brain function can be used as Neuromarkers in the clinical context to evaluate brain health in different psychiatric and neurological disorders. The experience of translating this methodology into clinical practice is presented in his recently published book Kropotov, J. D. (2016). Functional neuromarkers for psychiatry: Applications for diagnosis and treatment. San Diego, CA, US: Elsevier Academic Press. https://bmmi.wildapricot.org/AboutKropotov His scientific and research career spans 45 years of dedicated work in Brain science. Juri Kropotov, PhD. has earned three doctorates: in theoretical physics, in philosophy and neurophysiology. From 1970 to 1990, he practiced at the psychiatric clinics of the Institute of Experimental Medicine and Institute of the Human Brain at the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg. Dr. Moshe Perl is a world-class expert in neurofeedback and QEEG/EEG analysis, areas in which he has almost two-decades of experience teaching and mentoring practitioners in Australia and internationally.  He has successfully treated well over a thousand patients and has seen first-hand the amazing impact neurofeedback can have. Additionally, he has mentored over 100 practitioners in the field and reviewed thousands of cases inside of learning environments that develop and up-skill neurofeedback practitioners. Dr. Perl has studied with many of the recognized world-leading experts in neurofeedback and QEEG/EEG analysis, distilled their knowledge and has become a recognised leader in the industry. He applies his knowledge in clinical practice as well as in his teachings. A hallmark of Moshe’s teaching style is that he makes difficult concepts accessible and understandable for students at any level of skill or knowledge. He consistently receives excellent feedback for his courses, both on and offline. https://www.neurotherapy.com.au/about/ Mirjana Askovic is a senior psychologist with 30 years of clinical experience in mental health.https://www.startts.org.au/about-us/

This background pairs well with biofeedback work. She obtained her BA from San Francisco State University in psychology with emphasis in kinesiology and holistic health, which she added as a field of study prior to graduation. The connection between the mind and the body continued to fascinate her, and in 2012, she returned to SFSU. In 2014, she was accepted in the doctoral program in psychology at Saybrook University.  It was during this time she was introduced to neurofeedback and deepened her understanding of biofeedback. She continues to enrich her training through classes all over the world for biofeedback and neurofeedback. Biofeedback greatly assists in identifying underlying issues in targeted therapeutic strategies and enables her clients to participate more directly in their own healing. https://www.linkedin.com/in/taylor-capozziello-b10a3115/ https://www.elitephysiology.com/ We thank our Patreon Supporters: https://www.patreon.com/NeuroNoodleFeatured Business: Outrageous Baking, Tor Talk, Joshua M of Alternative Behavioral Therapy, https://www.outrageousbaking.com/ https://tortalk.se/?lang=en https://neurofeedbackcare.com/ "EEG and Me". Peter Van Deusen Founder of Brain-Trainer
Peter Van Deusen Founder of Brain-Trainer joined our Neuropsychologists, Dr. Laura Jansons and Dr. Skip Hrin Peter Van Deusen has been training brains and developing trainers and training systems for nearly 30 years through his company Brain-Trainer International. BTI's approach is unique in its focus on training to change brain habits rather than treating pathologies. Its philosophy is, "You don't have to be sick to want to get better." Pete began by training his own brain and experiencing lasting changes, leading him to begin working with others and developing Attention Development Programs. ADP's focus on practical training without diagnosing proved very popular and successful, and it grew to 4 centers in metro Atlanta over the decade of the 90's. After moving to Miami in 2001, he began providing hands-on workshops 200 days a year. Starting in 2002, Brain-Trainer.com began offering an integrated, cost-effective package of hardware, software and education. In 2007 he settled in Brazil, where he started a network that has grown to more than 400 clinicians. From that base, BTI now has distributors in Latin America, Brazil, the EU and the Pacific Rim. It continues to refine its integrated training system used by more than a thousand professional and lay trainers based on a unique assessment tool and sophisticated, easy-to-use training software. https://brain-trainer.com/ https://brain-trainer.com/brain-trainer-u/ Have an idea for a topic or guest? pete@neuronoodle.com We thank our Patreon Supporters: https://www.patreon.com/NeuroNoodle Featured Business: Outrageous Baking, and Tor Talk "Interested Brain Hacker" and Sandhya M Jansons.com DrSkipHrin.com

Dr. Mari K. Swingle the Author of "i-Minds" joined our Neuropsychologists, Dr. Laura Jansons, Dr. Skip Hrin, and QEEG Tech Legend Jay Gunkelman to chat about her book as well as digital addictions. How Cell Phones, Computers, Gaming, and Social Media are Changing Our Brains, Our Behavior, and the Evolution of Our Species i-Minds is an exploration of modern culture and the place i-technologies (e.g., computers, cell phones, gaming devices) have in our world. Weaving through the hard and soft sciences, including history, research, and popular literature; media and industry hype; sociology and social psychology; personal observations and tales from over 20 years of clinical practice and research, Dr. Mari Swingle explores the influence of i-technology on children and families, friends and lovers, work and learning, development and brain function as influenced by our ever changing world and the technologies within. In this exploration, Dr. Mari paints a picture of change, giving food for thought on what we should embrace and accept, what we should unequivocally reject, and many aspects of the digital era that are timely to debate. He then joined Ruth Lanius at University of Western Ontario, a specialist in neuroimaging of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where they uncovered a neurofeedback protocol that positively correlated with reductions in mind-wandering, together with enhanced functional connectivity in a key cognitive control network (Ros et al 2013, NeuroImage). This led to the first translational study investigating its impact on patients with PTSD, revealing a positive effect on well-being and a plastic modulation of salience/default-mode networks (Kluetsch et al 2014, Acta Scand Psych).   His research interests at the University of Geneva was focused on the potential application of neurofeedback in the study of neurocognitive function as well as in the treatment of brain disorders (for example, major depression).  His aim was to use multiple windows (fMRI, EEG and TMS) to explore the brain's remarkable plasticity, in the hope that the outcome of this research may inform future treatment options for psychiatry and neurorehabilitation. Listener Questions Answered - Neurofeedback, EEG, QEEG, Equipment and Training
Our Neuropsychologists Dr. Laura Jansons, Dr. Skip Hrin, and Neurofeedback Tech legend Jay Gunkelman answer the following listener-submitted question from Lisa C. Hello Pete, I am a therapist using LENS neurofeedback I have been working through the podcast episodes and it is wonderful! I hope you all keep it going. I have a couple suggestions for questions to address:  From the parents' or clients' point of view, I often get asked how long will it take and how long will it last. Many do not seem to understand that much of the great changes and symptom reductions are long-term. I would love to hear Skip, Laura or Jay's take on that. From a clinician's side: I would like to get BCIA certified and EEG certified. Are there courses or trainings that your team would recommend? Anything to avoid? Also, can they recommend equipment that would allow me to do QEEGs? LENS is somewhat different than traditional neurofeedback, as it is more a disentrainment method, and does not record the EEG for viewing after.  It has been an AMAZING addition to my practice and my therapists under me are all trained with it, but the Q capability is something I definitely want to add. Keep up the great work getting the word out!! Thanks much, Lisa C Quotes: JG "The Neurofeedback Training Curve has no top" JG "If someone says they are the expert in EEG...RUNNN !!!! They are dangerous!!!"
