Update from Pete and NEWS about the New versions of the Pain Toolkit for 2023

Update from Pete and NEWS about the New versions of the Pain Toolkit for 2023

What is different about these five skills to the usual Pain Toolkit 12 Tools?

Over the past 15 plus years I have been asking other self-managers like myself who have used the Pain Toolkit, what are the 5 key skills they used the most to self-manage their pain and these 5 Key Skills kept being mentioned so I asked around if others liked them and would it be useful to write a separate Pain Toolkit highlighting them and the overwhelming answer was yes.

Here are the 5 Key pain self-management skills:

  • Goal setting,
  • Pacing daily activities,
  • Problem solving,
  • Meaningful movement,
  • Having a setback plan.

The Pain Toolkit is yours and theirs go-to resource for learning more about self-managing pain.

These five basic self-management skills will help people develop a personalised plan to manage their pain and improve their quality of life.

By using the self-management skills, people will be able to set achievable goals, pace their activities to avoid over-doing, problem solve obstacles that may arise, use meaningful movement to promote active and mental well-being, and prepare for setbacks with a solid plan.

Our digital patient booklets also provide practical tools and resources can help you and patients have a better understanding pain and manage their symptoms more effectively.

We are confident that the Pain Toolkit online course will be a valuable resource in your journey towards supporting patients to manage their pain/ fatigue, so they are regaining control and getting themselves back in their driving seat.

Remember, the Pain Toolkit is always here to support you and your patients every step of the way.

Why not test your knowledge now to find out how much you know about self-management by playing the Pain Toolkit Game made by Focus Games

Tool 1 - Accept that you have persistent pain ... and then the willingness to begin to move on

Tool 1 - Accept that you have persistent pain ... and then the willingness to begin to move on

Tool 1 - Accept that you have persistent pain ... and then the willingness to begin to move on

Watch a video by Pete explaining more about Tool 1

Acceptance is the first and the most important tool in your pain self- management toolkit.

Acceptance is not about giving up.

It is recognising that you need to take more control and find how you can self-manage your pain better.

Acceptance is also a bit like opening a door - a door that will open to allow you into lots of self-managing opportunities.

The key that you need to open this door is not as large as you think. All you have to do is to be willing to use it and try and do things differently.

I really didn't like that when I read it. Who was this Pete Moore telling me that I had to accept my pain? But when I sat down and thought it through, acceptance is the key to moving on and I now feel I have done that. By using some of the tools, I have got my family life back and even returned to work.” M.E. Chelmsford

#GlobalYear2021 Back Pain Podcast by Pete Moore

So are back pain conditions a problem in the UK?

The short answer is yes so you are not on your own. Long-term health conditions affects more than 15 million people in the UK in their everyday living. They can be disabling and frustrating for many people to deal with. Health problems can also affect the relationships with family, friends and work colleagues.

How persistent pain has increased over the past 25yrs, in the UK. We need to change

How persistent pain has increased over the past 25yrs, in the UK.

1990’s - 7.8million people

2010/12 14million people

2016 - 28million + 500k people stuck on opioids

When will the penny drop with those in making decisions (Med Schools, Commissioners, Healthcare Professionals etc) Pain Mgt as we know it now, has to be revised/updated.
Outdated ways, such as just providing meds, treatments are unhelpful and creates passivity and also keeps people stuck in the passenger seat.
So who is going to change?
Let me know...

Free Thinking - for support pain self-management

Free Thinking - for support pain self-management

Free Thinking: a person who thinks freely or independently : one who forms opinions on the basis of reason independently of authority especially.

I think we need to use this more in pain self-management, so it allows the person with pain come up with solutions
