Lesley Beck: From Olympic Slalom to Mountain Biking and Beyond! - Part 2

Lesley Beck: From Olympic Slalom to Mountain Biking and Beyond! - Part 2

Join us in Part 2 as we delve beyond the gates and racing lines, exploring Lesley's journey alongside Mike Jardine and Rare Management.
Lesley lives and breathes for the outdoors, her infectious joy is as exhilarating as any downhill rush. Picture her slicing through untracked snow, conquering mountain bike trails, or simply soaking in the crisp Scottish air – with a smile as wide as the Highland panorama.
In this episode too, I share a quote from an online source here is the Quote and Photo source:

In this photo print, we are transported back to the exhilarating atmosphere of the 1987 FIS World Ski Championships held at Crans Montana. The focus is on Lesley Beck, a remarkable British skier who left an indelible mark on the world stage. With her determined gaze and poised stance, she epitomizes grace and strength as she navigates through the challenging slalom course. Lesley Beck's impressive career reached its pinnacle when she proudly represented Great Britain in the Winter Olympics at Sarajevo in 1984. This photograph captures her unwavering dedication and passion for skiing, showcasing her commitment to pushing boundaries and achieving greatness. The image itself is a testament to Colorsport's exceptional ability to freeze moments of sporting excellence in time. Stewart Fraser skillfully captures every detail - from the snowflakes gently falling around Lesley Beck to the intensity etched on her face - transporting viewers right into that thrilling competition. This print serves as a powerful reminder of not only Lesley Beck's incredible talent but also of all athletes who have dedicated their lives to their sport. It encapsulates both determination and inspiration, inviting us to relive those unforgettable moments where dreams were pursued fearlessly on snowy slopes.

Lesley Beck: From Olympic Slalom to Mountain Biking and Beyond! - Part 1

Lesley Beck: From Olympic Slalom to Mountain Biking and Beyond! - Part 1

A life shaped by snowy slopes and Scottish spirit, Lesley Beck isn't your average athlete. This effervescent adventurer carved her name in ski history as a one of the youngest female slalom competitors at the 1984 and 1988 Winter Olympics and beyond - tackling the slopes with the tenacity of a Highland beast.

But Lesley isn't just about ski racing, though we talk about her origins, progression and development - we also look at her journey with Mike Jardine and Rare Management. With successes like brining the World Mountian Biking Championships to Fort William, Scotland, Lesley’s story goes beyond gates and racing line.

Lesley lives and breathes for the enchantment of the outdoors. Whether skiing fresh snow, conquering a mountain bike trail, or simply soaking in the crisp Scottish air, her contagious joy for life is as exhilarating as any downhill rush.

Listen in as we peel back the layers on Lesley's life, from navigating the adrenaline rush of Olympic competition to the satisfaction of building world-class sporting events in Scotland.
Get ready for a whole lot of Scottish spirit!

“How can we shake up the Traditional Ski Movie Model??”  - Short form action & online – which was in 2007; yet again challenging conventions and this time the way we consume certain types of media.  http://tv.salomon.com

MIKE DOUGLAS - 'GODFATHER' OF FREE-SKIING ( PART 1)

MIKE DOUGLAS - 'GODFATHER' OF FREE-SKIING ( PART 1)

This week we speak with Mike Douglas who is widely regarded as the 'Godfather' of Free-skiing, as he has helped influence and shape the sport of skiing over his many years.

In this two part episode, part one we look at his early days of skiing, how he got involved with the sport an begin to dive into development story of the Iconic Salomon 1080 ski.

In today's inter connected world we perhaps take for granted that how simple it is get in touch with people; so bringing a new concept and product to market was a much greater challenge. After approaching all the big brands and names... it was Salomon who could see the vision of what Mike and the Team had conceived.

Mike also is passionate about the outdoors & the environment being the Chair of POW Canada, ( Protect Our Winters), and is an accomplished Director/ Producer and Film Maker for Switchback Entertainment. Lots going on and we cover that in part 2.

The Ski Shop At Your Front Door - Hike and Ride - Jen Ashton (Part 1)

The Ski Shop At Your Front Door - Hike and Ride - Jen Ashton (Part 1)

Hike and Ride was founded by Jen Ashton after spending seasons in the alps and years in frontline retail; she felt that the time had come to bring customers a new opportunity when it comes to ski boot fitting and snow sports hardware.

Why travel to the store - when the store can come to you. Groceries, packages & food all get delivered to your front door - why not bring the ski shop to you too??

But building a mobile ski boot lab with all the tools and power needed to fit custom ski boots and footwear was not a simple task let alone changing the way people buy these types of products.

Listen as in Part 1, Jen shares with us her retail journey and the experiences that led up to the creation of Hike and Ride.

On December 13th 1981, Konrad Bartelski put British Ski racing on the map by finishing second place, just 0.11 seconds behind Erwin Resch which was the highest place won by a Briton in any World Cup race until it was equalled in 2017 by Dave Ryding.

Konrad also lets us in as to what drove him to seek to achieve this success and how his love for the mountains was spurred on by his father's experiences in Canada.

The Secret of Handmade Skis - Rupert Gammond PFD Skis (Pt 2)

In the second part of our conversation, we learn more about the plans for PFD skis now people have the chance to go skiing again. PFD is not just about quality skis and snowboard, it really is about building something bigger; a community who's common interest lie in enjoying the Mountains and seeking the best they have to offer - both in product and experiences.

I had the honour of meeting Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD,  a number of years ago and from the very start was struck by his passion and dedication to skiing and to that of making his own skis. Making skis of any kind is a huge undertaking - but building them in the UK in a limited quantity, focusing on using products like Bamboo - is a whole other level. After finishing a product design degree, Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD, went straight to the mountains. Over the course of six winters, both passions of creativity and freeride skiing merged together to produce fresh, purposeful designs with a pure, minimal approach. In 2012 Pure Freeride Design was born out of a young designer’s passion for quality craftsmanship coupled with an equal passion for skiing.  After finishing a product design degree,PFD began its journey to create handmade skis in a purpose-built workshop, driven towards the perfect blend of materials, design, and a ‘no gimmick’ attitude to freeride skiing. Head Coach GB Snowsport - Pat Sharples (Pt. 2)

In this the second part of our conversation, Pat Sharples and I talk about some of the lessons that HE learned from his Athletes and have a laugh when he shares with us which Movie star he would have play him -  if they made the Pat Sharples story!!

Pat grew up skiing on the plastic slopes of Rossendale, England - but has come a long way since. Heading to alps to work and ski - he found he had a passion and talent for snow sports, specifically moguls winning various competitions and setting him on today’s path where he heads up the GB Snowsport Coaching Program.

It was a true honour to speak with Pat and have a laugh enjoying stories about the world of skiing. Make sure you listen to both part 1 and 2 to better understand the man who is coaching some our most talented athletes!

But none of this would have been possible without the help and support of many individual’s, brands and companies over the years. The continued support past present and future from various sponsors allows Pat and all the GB teams and athletes to perform a their very best.
