Life After the Adventure... Ep 64
Every story you’ve ever consumed, no matter the medium, deduces life into a series of moments to convey its message and theme. As story consultant Robert McKee says, “Whereas life separates meaning from emotion, art unites them. Story is an instrument by which you create such epiphanies at will, the phenomenon known as aesthetic emotion...Life on its own, without art to shape it, leaves you in confusion and chaos, but aesthetic emotion harmonizes what you know with what you feel to give you a heightened awareness and a sureness of your place in reality.” I don’t know about you but the quote is inspiring and frightening all at the same time. It’s inspiring because every story creates a blueprint of how to live life. It’s frightening because there’s a whole lot of parts missing. The plotting of a story very much involves which aspects of the characters’ lives to show and which to omit. That leaves a hell of a lot on the proverbial cutting room floor. I know this from my own experience in writing film scripts and a novel. Every scene in a story must move the plot forward. If it does not, it gets eliminated. Unfortunately in life, we can’t do the same. We can’t skip parts of life that are boring. And neither can we rewind and simply re-live the sections that we found exciting. And yet some people do try to live in the past, a star high school athlete who’s entering a mid-life crisis because he no longer has the same fame from before. And lastly, we also can’t speed up certain hard events via montages. We have to live life in real time. You might think, “well, no kidding.” And you’re not wrong. But I find that most people today, including myself, have an ever increasing need for instant gratification. That presents a major problem because it means we require a constant heightened sense of emotion, even though that’s not good for us. We need the quiet just as much as the loud and exciting. And if you don’t learn to live in the quieter moments of life, you’re doomed. This lesson aims to give you such tools. Thank you for tuning in and comment with your thoughts please! What is the Width of Life?... Ep 63
Strange as it may seem, I’ve always been fascinated by death. For one, I used to work at the first hospice in America for four years, starting when I was 15 years old. For another, because I’ve suffered major losses in my life and you can’t help but reflect upon it. We look at death as the final act, at least in the physical plain. And whenever we talk about someone’s life, we inevitably bring up their age. It’s a very easily measurable aspect of a person’s life. How long they lived. But what about a person’s width of life? What is that and how do we measure it? I have a theory based on studying a tea bag. Sounds crazy, I know, but I promise there’s merit to it and can impact your life. Thank you for tuning in and comment with your thoughts please! PS: I’d like to dedicate this episode to my grandmother who recently passed away. “This Is Water” - A Reading of David Foster Wallace’s Speech... Ep 62
In this episode, I read a truncated version of a speech that author David Foster Wallace gave in 2005 called “This is Water”. It is considered by many as one of the most impactful speeches in the last century. It certainly had a profound effect on me. I revisit this speech multiple times a year and I hope you gain the same wisdom from it as I have. After listening to it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. “Oh Yes” - Reading of a Poem by Charles Bukowski... Ep 61
In this lesson, I wanted to read a Charles Bukowski poem that I often revisit. It’s had a lot of impact on my and whenever I read it to someone else, it has the same level of significance, although perhaps in different ways. The poem is extremely short, but there’s power in its brevity. After listening to it, I’d love to know what you thought of it. To review in text form, the poem goes: there are worse things than being alone but it often takes decades to realize this and most often when you do it's too late and there's nothing worse than too late. What To Do When Life Comes at You Fast and Hard... Ep 60
Ever feel like right when you start to get a grip on things life decides to throw a curveball your way? And let’s be honest, it’s never just one curveball. There’s an old expression that when it rains it pours. Sure can feel like that where you experience hurdle after hurdle and no matter what you do. Bad events stick to you like glue. So what’s the solution? How do you prevent this from happening to you? Well, that’s exactly what I (Phil Svitek) explore in this lesson along with the help of some Rocky Balboa and Gandhi quotes. I explore how to handle life’s adversities!  Thank you for tuning in and comment with your thoughts please! Why Cause and Effect is Bullshit!... Ep 59
Do you know what causality is? It’s the principle where everything that happens is because of a certain cause. Sometimes it’s referred to as the cause and effect theory. As a society, many of us have adopted this line of thinking because it seems logical. It gives us a sense of understanding. But what if cause and effect was bullshit? What then? What you have to understand first and foremost is that many of us, including me, have limited our thinking severely. Why? Well, because we’ve bought into the stories of our ancestors, our parents and society. Here’s a lie you’ve probably bought into: past experience can predict the future. No it can’t. Another lie is we’re not perfect. Who says we’re not? I’m perfect just the way I am and so are you. (We can choose to better ourselves, but that doesn’t mean we’re imperfect. That’s just part of the human journey.) Causality is also false. We actually have the ability to alter our realities just by thinking about it. How the hell does that happen? Through practiced techniques, we can essentially rewire ourselves and therefore affect our surroundings. Sounds woo-woo doesn’t it? But it doesn’t have to be if you open yourself up to it. The wonderful thing about this lesson is you’ll discover that you can become the “storyteller”, as Don Miguel Ruiz puts it, of your own life. I (Phil Svitek) use the teachings of quantum physics and specifically Joe Dispenza to show you all this. After you’re done with the lesson, please write down 10 things you’re grateful for in your life. Trust me, it’ll make sense after you’ve gone through the lesson. Thank you for tuning in! How to be Comfortable with Uncomfortability... Ep 58 with Phil Svitek
This lesson is geared to make you comfortable with uncomfortability. You might be asking yourself, why would I (Phil Svitek) ever want you to feel uncomfortable? Why can’t I just teach you ways to avoid pain and discomfort? Truth is, life doesn’t work like that and if you go about avoiding suffering, you’ll eventually be doomed because when inevitable circumstances strike, they may end up crippling you. But if you practice becoming comfortable with uncomfortability, you’ll develop proper tools and techniques to use in those instances and not be thwarted by them. And the beauty is you can apply this thinking towards your dreams. Think of what you really want. Now think of the aspects of that dream that make it seem difficult. What are they? The wonderful thing about this lesson is you’ll discover that your desire for your dreams is greater than you fear of discomfort. Your desire is dynamic and creates action, building momentum over time. That’s what the exercises I teach you are designed to do—to create that initial spark. Please, go ahead and write down what makes you feel uncomfortable in the comment section. Thank you for tuning in! Are You Responsible If It’s Not Your Fault?... Ep 57
If something happens in your life that’s not your fault, who’s responsible? Think about it for a second because the answer may actually be life altering. If you think you are, then you’re correct. But how can that be and furthermore, what’s it really mean? Watch this lesson from me (Phil Svitek) and find out—you might just stop thinking of yourself as the victim in life and find a way to push through in spite of your circumstances. This mantra, if you will, has helped me and I know it can help you. You’ll discover the principle really dates back to a wonderful quote by Charles Swindoll but in order to really unpack its full meaning, I provide context for it. Once you’ve gone through the episode, I invite you to comment down below with any instances in your life where you chose not to be a victim of your circumstances. Recognizing Patterns of Causality vs Simple Correlation... Ep 56
Ever notice patterns in your life that you then interpret as truth? Here’s an example: let’s say that whenever you’re sick you drink celery juice and listen to classical music to help you sleep, neither of which you normally do. Afterwards, you get well. What happens then is your brain links those things together, because as Judson Brewer, who is an American psychiatrist and neuroscientist, points out, our brains love to link things together. The problem with this is that it’s a statement of true, true and correlated rather than true, true and causation. As human beings, we try so hard to construct meaning and purpose from experience. A noble pursuit especially as artists. However, in doing so, we must constantly remind ourselves that our understanding is always going to be limited. One of the biggest reasons is because we can only ever see something through the lens of our perspective, which leaves out a lot of other perspectives. This is what I (Phil Svitek) explore in this lesson. I show you how to stop making assumptions and to really dig towards the truth. After the episode, I encourage you go ahead and write down two true statements that you’ve observed in your life. If you feel inclined, you can go ahead and try to defend those statements as being causal instead of just correlated. But if you don’t do that, no worries. The point of the exercise is to write down the patterns we notice in our lives and to begin to explore that. What I’d love to see happen is we all respond to each other’s posts and learn together. So go ahead and comment.  TRANSCRIPT: https://philsvitek.com/recognizing-patterns-of-causality-vs-simple-correlation  SELECTED LINKS FROM EPISODE: Judson Brewer Interview on The goop Podcast: https://goop.com/the-goop-podcast/why-we-crave/  Not Twice T-Shirt Campaign: http://nottwice.org  A Very LA Birthday Short Film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9SHJaepE0c  FOLLOW THE PODCAST TEAM: Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  SUPPORT THE SHOW: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek  Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/phil-svitek---360-creative-coach/ Adorama Affiliate Link: https://www.adorama.com/?utm_source=rflaid914115

Never Hit the Snooze Button!... Ep 55
Have you ever hit the snooze button? I have and every morning I’ve hit the snooze button I felt like I started my day off with failure. I then asked many other people how they felt after hitting snooze on their alarms and the response has been the same. They were in a negative mental state for the better part of the day—tired, groggy, angry at themselves, feeling like they were already behind and therefore stressed, etc. These observations have led me to an unpopular idea that you should never hit the snooze button because when you do you begin your day as a failure. Hearing that might make you ready to skip this lesson, but allow me to explain, and furthermore, tell you what you can do to prevent that. Once you hear the full lesson, try out my methods and see how positively they affect the way you wake up. That in turn will positively impact the rest of your day. When you do, I’d love to hear how they help you out. What Is Spiritual Bypassing and the Ways It Affects You Without You Even Knowing It... Ep 54
Have you ever heard the term spiritual bypass? I (Phil Svitek) didn’t until recently. If you have, do you know the term’s full meaning and how it affects you? Chances are you probably don’t. I certainly wasn’t aware. In this lesson, I explore the term by defining it, the ways you might be exemplifying it, how it impacts you and the world on a micro and macro level and most importantly what you can do to prevent yourself from becoming a spiritual bypasser—especially as an artist. I pull examples from Comedy Central’s South Park, the US Women’s National Soccer Team (specifically Megan Rapinoe), DaVinci, Toni Morrison, Charlotte Bronte, Shakespeare, Don Miguel Ruiz and Psychology Today. When you’re done with the episode, please comment below with examples from your life of spiritual bypassing. Be honest as it may help someone else to recognize when they’re doing it. How to Find the Real Problem by Asking the Three Whys... Ep 53
Let me ask you a question — how do you derive at the real problem whenever you’re trying to fix something? Often times we think the issue we’re focused on will resolve that issue. But the truth is, most often, it won’t. In many instances what we’re treating is the symptom and not the root cause. Which also points to a huge issue in general, which is we put stock and value in the wrong things. So how do we remedy that and what should we be focusing on? Well, in this lesson, I (Phil Svitek), will show you a simple tactic called the three why theory to get to the route of any issue. I’ll draw inspiration and examples from Patch Adams, Ricardo Semler and Inc.com. After you’ve heard this lesson, please comment with any issues you’re facing that you’ll apply this technique towards. What It Takes to Build, Grow and Sustain a Brand with Lina Noory... Ep 52
Lina Noory joins me (Phil Svitek) on this episode and it is a real treat! Who is Lina Noory, for those of you who don’t know? She’s not only a dear friend who I used to host the AfterBuzz TV Reign after show with but she’s also an on camera personality with a focus on fashion and style. But to pigeon hole her as just a fashion expert is a huge disservice to her. She is one of the most intelligent people I know. She tries to learn everything she can and a lot of her perspective on life is informed by her Afghan heritage. During our conversation, we cover so many topics that all tie back to what it truly takes to build, grow and sustain a brand. Such topics include:  How consistency is a must Why making a social contract with your audience motivates you by holding you accountable How to recognize your shortcomings without letting them dictate your life Understanding the value you deliver to people The power of meditation on your life and content How to truly build a career that lasts How to avoid the rat race and not give into social norms We also get deep, talking about depression and therapy and end by discussing Afghanistan and how the country has shaped her perspectives on life. For as long as this interview is, I wish it could have been even longer. I especially wish we got to talk more about Afghanistan because I love learning about different cultures, especially ones that have many misconceptions. But comment down below any follow up questions you may have and if there’s enough, it’ll help me justify a round two to Lina. One final thing — grab a notebook. Why Milestones are Perfect Motivators... Ep 51
Last week was my 50th episode of this series. That was a huge milestone. And in this lesson, I want to share with you how you can use various milestones in your life as motivators. First off, what is a milestone? Not only do I clarify that question but I then highlight the various ways those milestones can serve as incentives to achieve your goals and dreams. It’s a shorter lesson that usual, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less valuable. Once you’ve heard this lesson, please comment with the milestones you’ve chosen to identify in your life to get you to move forward. I’m very curious to know. Lastly, I’m grateful you’ve taken the time to hear what I have to say. May the knowledge I’ve shared serve you well. Why There’s Much Optimism About Where Humanity Is Headed... Ep 50
Negativity perpetuates negativity. And while it may be easier to be critical, judgemental and cynical given today’s mindset, there’s actually a lot to be optimistic about. In this, my 50th episode, I highlight all the exciting things in humanity’s future and how we can all get there faster. It’s not a typical episode for me but it matters to you. I promise. I cite thinkers such as Steven Pinker (author of Enlightenment Now), Lynne Twist (author of The Soul of Money), artist Andy Goldworthy among others. I’m very curious to know what you think as well as which of my 50 episodes you’ve enjoy most, so be sure to comment down below. As always, thank you for being part of this journey with me. It’s incredible to think I’ve done 50 of these and you’ve taken the time to join me. Truly, I’m amazed and humbled. How to Avoid Cliches in Your Creative Work... Ep 49
Ever watch a movie or a TV show and think to yourself, “Man, I’ve seen this before” or “This is a ripoff of…” Now let me ask you this — if professionals can fall victim to cliches, then how can you avoid them in your creative work? Find out in this lesson with me (Phil Svitek)! First, I define what a cliche really is and then we tackle it from a technical standpoint as well as mental. I use four simple methods to help you avoid cliches in your projects. During the lesson, I point to other works as examples (both good and bad). The good examples include Ride Along, Stephen King books, sitcoms like F is for Family, That 70s Show, The Simpsons and others. I even point to directors Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese for inspiration, along with business author Daniel Pink. Even though the episode is less than 20 minutes, it’s jam packed. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe for more lessons. And please comment below with any cliches you’ve noticed cropping up in your field. I’d love to know. As always, thank you. What Does the Career Ladder Look Like in the Entertainment Industry... Ep 48
Is there such a thing as a career ladder in the entertainment industry? If there is, what does it look like? These questions tend to unhinge people because they think that if they do A, B and C then it will lead to X, Y and Z. The truth it is, it doesn’t correlate like that. This fact frustrates many hard-working and talented creatives. But don’t worry, in this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) will highlight how to go after your goals in the best way, despite not having a roadmap. What you’ll end up learning, can be applied to life as well. How to Get Out of a Creative Rut... Ep 46
At one point or another, we all face a creative rut. It's the stage where we've been doing something and all of a sudden we don't know how to continue. You can call it writer's block. Or creative fatigue. Perhaps burnout. Maybe it can be even as severe as depression. A creative rut has levels of asperity. It can be mild or dire. Ideally, you’d be able to pull yourself out of a creative rut before you spiral into a deep existential crisis. But let’s be honest with each other, sometimes a creative rut can lead to that where you’re questioning your sense of purpose. In fact, it happens to a lot of people who find success. It’s called the achiever’s curse. It leaves the person feeling with a sense of what’s next? Where’s it all heading? What’s it all mean? The good news is there’s many ways to overcome creative ruts. Many of these methods are individual to you. Some will work, others will not. You might need to combine certain ones. And they may change over time. But it is my goal in this lesson to present as many techniques as I can to help pull you out of your creative rut, no matter what depth you’ve found yourself in. In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) will even pull references from Legally Blonde (starring Reese Witherspoon), author Neil Gaiman, Bar Rescue’s Jon Taffer and investor Ray Dalio. If you like what you hear, be sure to subscribe for more lessons. And please comment below with any tricks that you’ve learned from your own experience - they may benefit someone else. How to Find Peace and Happiness by Accepting Three Simple Life Rules... Ep 43
Are you happy? It’s a very general and basic question, I know, but are you happy? You may be wondering what happiness has to do with anything, especially creative success. Tune into this lesson and you’ll learn that happiness is truly everything. I, Phil Svitek, will highlight three simple rules I learned from Dan Millman’s book called The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. Why You Need to Build a Meaningful Community... Ep 42
I (Phil Svitek) hear lots of people emphasizing that you need a good group of friends or a strong community. And they’re right, but they’re underselling why it is so important and also how to go about creating that foundation. That’s my focus here because the creative industry is extremely collaborative. Even the professions that on the surface seem like solitary disciplines, such as writing or painting, require collaboration in the end. We all need feedback for one thing. Secondly, friends or a community help us to grow. They inform us of things we’re unaware of. That’s the true value in having a community. Together, we can grow faster than you could individually as well as other benefits. Citing people such as Tony Robbins, Chris McCandless, Tom Brady, Simon Sinek, I explore the full depth of a community and how you too can cultivate one. And be sure to comment below with any questions you may have and share the episode with a friend. What Got You To Egypt Won’t Get You To The Promised Land… Ep 41
Have you ever found yourself debating whether or not you should take an opportunity? Some will preach to you that you must seize every opportunity that comes your way (including TV phenom Shonda Rhimes). Others like Greg McKeown, Warren Buffett and Tim Ferriss will urge you to be selective with your time. So who’s right? Well, I’ve found there’s a fundamental aspect about that which isn’t discussed much. In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek), will go in depth about how you can make that distinction for yourself of when to say yes and when to say know. Luckily for you, the answer is quite simple, thanks to high performance coach Rich Litvin and others. Once you know this fundamental distinction, you’ll be able to thrive creatively. I encourage your feedback and questions and also invite you to check out more of my episodes on my website. Enjoy. Broke Millennial Guides Creatives Towards Financial Freedom: Interview with Erin Lowry... Ep 40
Finances, it’s an area I (Phil Svitek) keep returning to but it’s because it’s super important. No, money is not the key to happiness, however it does relieve stress when you get to live life on your own terms by having financial freedom. In my 40th episode, I’m honored to interview Broke Millennial herself, Erin Lowry. I read her 1st book, Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together, in 2018 and I was blown away at how she managed to convey new tactics I haven’t seen in other books (mainly because most other wealth management book concern themselves with basics, but not student loans, relationships and other practical day to day issues). She manages to layer in the methods through personal stories as well. It’s not just an instruction manual. That’s what I love about her. From that point, I knew I wanted to talk to her. I got in touch and she agreed so long as it could be in time for her second book Broke Millennial Takes On Investing, a stipulation I was more than happy to agree to. So, this episode is my chat with her where she openly shares all kinds of financial advice, specifically geared towards creatives and freelancers. There are many great take-aways so I encourage you to jot down notes as you listen and also to pick up both her books. They are great resources as is her website. She is also touring right now with a presentation AND doing a Wednesday AMA. Check out this episode, follow her and become financially free! Let The Past Die (Kill It If You Have To)... Ep 39
Have you ever been told you need to be more present?  Or that you’re too focused on the past? The past can carry positive emotions but for many artists, it can carry its baggage as well. It is through the lens of these negative emotions that we then begin to project what the future holds for us. This is bad because it makes us worry and stress, all the while taking us away from the present moment. The present, as many leaders, gurus and so on have stated, is all we have and where we must put our energy. In today’s lesson, I (Phil Svitek) will examine the effects of so-called time traveling has on our minds and bodies which is way more severe than you might think. More importantly though, I’ll provide solutions to stay more present and create the future you want. I’ll cite people such as Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Joe Dispenza (author of Breaking the Habit and Becoming Supernatural), Alice Miller (author of The Body Never Lies) and creative coach Mark McGuinness. Plus, the simplest advice will come from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. (Can you guess what it might be???) I’m excited to see the results you’ll have once you start applying some of these very simple techniques. Comment below with thoughts, opinions, personal experiences, questions, etc. Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/let-the-past-die-kill-it-if-you-have-to  Joe Dispenza Website: https://drjoedispenza.com/ Gabor Mate Website: https://drgabormate.com/ The Body Never Lies Book: https://www.amazon.com/Body-Never-Lies-Lingering-Parenting/dp/0393328635  Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

The Mindset of a 21st Century Creative: Interview with Mark McGuinness… Ep 38
Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” That is also the viewpoint of poet and creative coach Mark McGuinness. The 21st century has so much to offer artists so long as they stay the course and don’t get distracted. In today’s episode, I (Phil Svitek) interview Mark about the challenges facing all 21st century creatives and how to overcome them. Mark is someone whose podcast (The 21st Century Creative) was recommended to me and since the first episode I listened to, I became hooked. He works with many top artists around the world, helping them overcome creative challenges. Together, we dive deep into philosophical and practical ideas that anyone can benefit from. I suggest you listen because as Mark says, “we as creatives put our heart and our soul into our work and so sometimes, we need to work on our heart and our soul.” Throughout our conversation we cite quotes from Charles Darwin, Steven Pressfield and even ancient texts. You’ll learn how to keep pushing through and completing your project even once you’ve hit a wall with it - a situation I was finding myself in with my book. Mark will even recommend great poetry to immerse yourself in. Plus so much more. Oh, so, so, SO much more. Enjoy this fantastic chat and please leave a comment below with any questions or thoughts you may have. Thank you. Stop Hoarding Your Ideas… Ep 37
It seems like everyone in the world hoards ideas. But how does that actually benefit them? It doesn’t and that’s what I (Phil Svitek) overview in today’s lesson. By ideas, I don’t mean your random thoughts or #fakelife on social media. I mean it in a much deeper and richer sense. Ideas, to me, encompass insights learned from life and concepts you generate. Yes, they make you vulnerable but there’s a worse alternative - I go over it in depth in the lesson. What’s more amazing to look at though is that the most successful people in the world, and companies, freely share information. So why wouldn’t you? Discover why you should stop hoarding your ideas immediately and default to open as Google might say. Share your journey. Share your knowledge. It will benefit you in ways you can’t even begin to imagine. As always, thank you for allowing me to share my ideas with you and please be sure to comment with any questions or thoughts you may have. Failure Is a Necessary Step Forward… Ep 36
Failure is a nasty word to many. But why? Why do we have such an aversion to it? Why do we let it paralyzes us? Why is it that the fear of failure prevents artists from creation? And the fear of failure comes in many forms – sometimes it’s even disguised as procrastination. Make no mistake, our aversion to failure can have dire consequences. But then, WHY are we so afraid? Judgment? Self-pity? I’m sure you can name a myriad of answers. Sadly, there are people, including myself, who know that failure is the key to success and yet we avoid it like the plague. So how do you rid yourself of this idea that you’re a failure? You don’t. You work in spite of it. See, the most successful people in the world are not successful because they possess something you or I don’t, they are successful because they continue on. In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) examine where our fear of failure comes from but more importantly I give you ways to overcome this crippling sensation. If you don’t, then this fear can be dire and lead you astray from your creative endeavors. Follow the given steps in this lesson and you too can grow and succeed against any challenge that life presents you. Please leave a comment with any questions or opinions you may have so I can respond to you and keep the conversation going. Thank you. Why You Should Never Hold Back Your Creativity and Other Lessons with Lauren LoGrasso… Ep 35
Lauren LoGrasso believes that creativity is within everyone and it must be tapped into and utilized, whether traditional creative means or inventive and fun ways of doing “non-creative” tasks. Otherwise, if we don’t, we’ll suffer and become unhappy, eventually even depressed. But who is Lauren? She is a musician, producer, podcaster, actress and overall creative artist that I’ve known for at least five years. She’s an amazing person and she joins me (Phil Svitek) to offer her wisdom and insight into navigating life as a creative. Lauren sheds light into how she’s found the courage to overcome fear, stay positive and keep moving forward on projects that have taken way longer to complete than ever expected - sometimes even having to start from scratch. She’s honest and raw and even discusses the importance of therapy and self-development for any person. Her latest project - Unleash Your Inner Creative - is a shining example of what she’s able to accomplish and the knowledge she is able to spread. More importantly, she loves all souls and it shows. Her passion is infectious and I hope you catch it! Her major theme of this conversation is never hold back your creativity. Powerful, right? Please be sure to comment with any questions or opinions you may have for me or Lauren. Thank you. Restrictions Can Be Liberating and Other Lessons with Khaliel Abooboo… Ep 34
Filmmaker Khaliel Abooboo is a very dear friend of mine. I’ve known him for a number of years after he joined AfterBuzz TV. Him and I (Phil Svitek) became friends early on and that friendship has grown tremendously over the years. But that’s not what makes him special. Khaliel has a spirit, joy and passion for creating content that infects everyone around him. And he’s ambitious in the projects he wants to make and never lets fear, resources, or anything else stand in the way of those ambitions. He joins be today to chat about his latest projects including the Black Spiderman web series and Shoot Your Shot. We also travel back in time and explore how Khaliel learned all the things he knows today. In recounting stories, Khaliel is able to highlight the lessons he’s gained along the way and how you too can apply it to your art, such as the fact that restrictions can be liberating to you. Plus we discuss the state of the industry, how to keep momentum without having the wheels come off and other deep insights we didn’t know we’d get into when we started the conversation. Please enjoy this interview and please support my friend - not because he’s my friend but because his work is amazing. Be sure to leave a comment down below as well. Daily Artist’s Challenge… Ep 33
How can you challenge yourself daily and grow within your craft? It’s a question that plagues many of us especially when time, money and resources are limited. But in order to become an expert, Malcolm Gladwell suggests that we need 10,000 hours of deliberate principle?  Chances are you have, even if you didn’t know that it came from him. The theory is that in order to become a master of a certain craft, you need to dedicate 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. How much time is 10,000 hours? It amounts to about 5 years if you spend 6 hours each and every day working towards your goal. In this instant gratification era that may seem like a hell of a lot of time, especially when you account for no weekend or holiday breaks. But that is what it takes. I (Phil Svitek) am not here today to argue against him because in the end it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that as an artist you continue to grow on a daily basis – that you’re better today than you were yesterday. And this applies to all levels – beginner to expert because even once you reach the level of expert, there’s always new ways to challenge yourself. In this lesson I provide you with a new perspective on how to stop seeing these notions as roadblocks and instead embrace them. I show you ways in which you can still practice your art every day in spite of any obstacles. Doing so will make you so much better and provide you with a unique voice! State of the Podcast Industry 2019: An Interview with Rob Greenlee… Ep 32
Rob Greenlee, Vice President of Podcast Relations at Voxnest, joins me (Phil Svitek) on this special episode where the two of us discuss the state of the podcast industry in 2019. Rob highlights his journey into podcasting since the early beginnings and his work with Microsoft’s Zune. He recounts the growth that has happened and discusses what’s needed in order for the industry to continue to evolve. Plus, he and I discuss practical ways in which podcasters can get started or grow their pre-existing series. We’ll go over cool gadgets in the space such as the Rodecaster Pro mixer used by many podcasters. Lastly, Rob names his favorite podcast conventions that are most beneficial for getting immersed with other podcasters. He offers up a ton in a short amount of time so pay attention. The Path of the Artist: Balance Life with Art … Ep 31
Creative people tend to have so many dreams, it can become easy to feel overwhelmed by all of them, which unfortunately leads to not accomplishing them. Productivity and freedom comes from you committing to your art and then you choose whatever else fits that benefits you in some way. It’s a simple enough answer but many of us fear committing to certain choices because it inevitably means you’re eliminating other possibilities. I find that the fear of commitment is an American epidemic. If we’re doing one thing, it then means we’re not getting to do another. But that’s just a fact of life. You can choose to see it as bad or you can just accept it because I believe true freedom comes from commitment. More than likely the people you look up to are fantastic at committing to projects and getting them done. They are probably so good at it that the sheer amount of projects they’re able to turn out seems intimidating. This, I believe, is the reason why I know too many people with hundreds of projects at various stages of progress and none of them complete. Does that sound like someone you want to be? I don’t, which is why in this lesson I (Phil Svitek) provide you with principles that successful people have used in order to accomplish many projects in their lives. I reference investor Warren Buffett, Greg McKeown’s essentialism principle, Parkinson’s Law and the importance of routines to combine them into real world steps you can take to achieve your creative endeavors. And it all starts with a mental shift. Are you ready to see your dreams cross the finish line? Then check out this episode. As always, thank you for doing so and write your opinion, any suggestions or questions you may have afterwards.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/the-path-of-the-artist-balance-life-with-art/ Warren Buffett Article: https://www.businessinsider.com/warren-buffetts-not-to-do-list-2016-10 Greg McKeown Book: https://gregmckeown.com/book/  Importance of Routines and Systems Episode: https://philsvitek.com/importance-of-routines-systems/ Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

To Create or to Destroy? … Ep 30
There are two fundamental choices each of us gets to make in our daily lives - to either create or destroy. That’s really it. Everything else stems from there. I (Phil Svitek) showcase the power you gain when you decide to operate from a place of creativity rather than destruction - it’s precisely why it is one of my new year’s resolutions. I go into detail what it means to operate from a place of creativity vs destruction and provide examples from various thinkers, such as Barack Obama, Steven Pinker, Charles Bukowski, Marisa Peer and so on, to highlight everyday impacts of this single choice. You’ll be amazed at what can be accomplished through this simple shift when you approach both your artistic ventures and life in general from this perspective. You can accomplish anything really by doing this mental change. Furthermore, I point to the source of where this choice begins, which is our words. More often than not, we’re the most harmful verbally towards ourselves. That’s not helping. Overcome this habit to unlock the benefits teased above. Join me and see how you can elevate your life. Also, I encourage you to write any thoughts, questions, suggestions, etc that you may have in the comment section. The interview goes  much deeper into finances so you can explore the concepts more  meaningfully. Here is the original description from that episode:  Phil Svitek and Ally Nasta dive deeper to into the world of personal finance with expert Katerina Cozias. With her help, she explains how to properly invest, save and who is a great resource to be your personal ongoing expert. Please let Phil and Ally know your thoughts and opinions about the advice given – do you agree? have you tried other methods? what have you found that works/doesn't work? Etc... The goal of this show is to share information with everyone! Phil and Ally are simply the catalysts for a much deeper, engaging and universal conversation, especially with a topic such as money. This interview represents the final part of their in depth journey into personal finance. For more on Katerina Cozias visit http://katerinacozias.com. BONUS - On Personal Finance with Financially Fit Foundation's Chelsea Galicia
This bonus episode is an interview I did with Ally Nasta for another show called Open Source Knowledge. That podcast is no longer active but the information is very much still relevant because it’s a great companion piece to Phil's latest lesson on budgeting. The interview goes much deeper into finances so you can explore the concepts more meaningfully. Here is the original description from that episode:  Phil Svitek and Ally Nasta explore the world of personal finance. To give them initial pointers and insights, they interview Chelsea Galicia, co-founder of the Financially Fit Foundation (http://financiallyfitfoundation.org/). With her help, they debunk common myths about budgeting, spending and saving. Chelsea gives them great step by step instructions to truly track where their money is going so they too can be “financially fit”. Let’s Talk About Money… Ep 29
It’s a brand new year and many of us have made new year’s resolutions in order to accomplish what we want. But what about our finances? Have you thought about those? Budgeting is the first step to financial freedom and in this lesson I (Phil Svitek) highlight the methods that Financially Fit Foundation’s Chelsea Galicia used to teach me about my wealth management. It may seem like a scary or intimidating subject, but as creatives it is ultra important that we are aware of our spending - otherwise how else will we achieve our dreams? The steps given are easy and practical. They’re designed to get you started. You won’t be where you ultimately want to end up, but you can’t get there without doing this first. So, as scared as you might be, check out this episode and gain control of your financial life today! Also, as a bonus, I’m reposting past interviews that pertain to finances on the audio podcast this week (sorry, I don’t have video versions of these). Be sure to check those out as well for more info and please comment below with any thoughts, opinions, questions or even recommendations. Thank you. Become Grateful… Ep 28
AJ Jacobs recently released a book called Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey where he chronicles his journey of individually thanking all the people responsible for his coffee in the morning. This includes the factory worker than ensures health safety measures. This includes the workers where the coffee beans originated from. It even includes the person who painted the lines on the road so that the truck driver who then transports the coffee had a proper road to drive on. If you really think about it, that’s a lot of people that are responsible for his coffee (and yours). The process really made him appreciate life more and solidified for me (Phil Svitek) a notion that Tony Robbins and many other thought leaders have preached, which is become more grateful in your life. Doing so will bring you appreciation and joy towards life like nothing else. Especially in today’s day and age, we may feel disconnected from other people whether by physical distances or by differing thoughts. But when you start applying the type of thinking that I explore in this quick lesson, you’ll start to realize how interconnected we all really are. It will give you a sense of pride, passion and encouragement. I highlight key takeaways I learned from the book and why it’s imperative that creatives embrace a life of gratitude in order to be fulfilled not only creatively but in all aspects of life. This lesson comes just in time for 2018’s holiday season and I encourage you to take advantage of this time to practice gratitude and to carry it forward into the new year so you can apply this mentality towards your projects and see how it benefits you. (If you’re watching this in the “future” then just pick a different milestone as your starting point. Make it simple. It can be today!) Importance of Tech… Ep 27
Technology is neither good nor bad. It depends on how you use it and as I (Phil Svitek) note, too often creatives shy away from it. Their ambitions often times suffer because of it. It can take longer to accomplish something if at all. By learning technology, an artist can be liberated and achieve their greatest dreams. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez is a strong advocate of learning technology as a means to enhance projects. Technology, when used right, is empowering. You don’t have to rely on others for help. You can do it yourself. In this lesson, I showcase the importance technology can play in your creative endeavours as well as pointing you in the right direction of places to learn more. Such examples include YouTube tutorials, Lynda.com, Skillshare.com, the magazine racks at a bookstore like Barnes and Noble, the library, trade shows and most importantly just a simple internet search. I also encourage a networking group of like-minded people for you to connect with in order to learn from each other especially in this rapidly changing landscape. Don’t worry, I give you steps to make that happen! Comment below with questions or comments and also what equipment, software, etc you have found beneficial in your life. Finding Your Purpose… Ep 26
This weekend I (Phil Svitek) met with a lot of hosts during the AfterBuzz TV annual end of year summit. What I discovered was that many of them had the same fears and doubts which boiled down to this idea that they weren’t where they ultimately wanted to be or that they haven’t yet discovered their true purpose. It hit me that many artists must feel this way. I sure have and at times this feeling creeps back up. So, in this lesson, I’ll provide you with the same advice I shared with the AfterBuzzers I met with over the weekend. I explore how to find your purpose and why it’s not as far off as you might have imagined. It just begins with action. Without action, you’ll never discover your passions and what you’re good at. I highlight a bit of my own journey from wanting to become a film editor to being AfterBuzz TV’s Chief Operating Officer. I also pinpoint where the doubt stems from within ourselves. Utilizing a James Cameron quote, I’ll help dispel the notion of what’s possible and what’s not. Because let’s face it, as artists, we all have lofty ambitions. So stop succumbing to your fears and doubts and create the life you’re meant to have - after you discover what that actually is :) Enjoy the episode and comment below with any thoughts, questions, feedback, etc.   Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/finding-your-purpose/ Applying the Start-up J Curve to Your Life: https://philsvitek.com/applying-the-start-up-j-curve-to-your-entire-life/  Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/philippsvitek Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

Dealing with Everyday Tasks… Ep 25
We all have everyday tasks that we must knockout (laundry, grocery shopping, responding to emails, etc). These are called maintenance tasks. But they don’t further you towards your dreams. So the question becomes, what options do we have to ease our lives with these maintenance tasks so we can tackle more of what are called growth tasks daily? Good question! And that’s what I (Phil Svitek) will teach you today. I will explore the 6 various methods at your disposal. I cite examples such as Beyonce, Gandhi, ABC’s Shark Tank, AfterBuzz TV’s Maria Menounos and Keven Undergaro and others to help illustrate my points better. I’ll provide step by step instructions so you know exactly how to emulate these titans. So go ahead, check out the episode and try these techniques and see how they work out for you. Also, feel free to comment below with any suggestions you might have, or of course ask a question about specifics for your own situation.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/dealing-with-everyday-tasks/  Part 1 (Scientific Way to Combat Procrastination): https://philsvitek.com/scientific-way-to-combat-procrastination/ Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/philippsvitek Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

Scientific Way to Combat Procrastination… Ep 24
Procrastination is a beast many of us fight daily and unfortunately lose out to. We may have will power that allow us to gain small victories but the war ends up being lost via abandoned passion projects and other dreams. So how do we win this ongoing struggle and become more productive like the people we aspire to be, whether that be Oprah, The Rock, Kevin Hart, Tyler Perry, Maria Menounos or even AfterBuzz TV creator Keven Undergaro? The answer is simpler than you think and it’s scientifically proven to work through a technique called implementation intention, which empowers the prefrontal cortex and hacks the limbic system thanks to procedural memory. Join me (Phil Svitek) as I take you step by step through the entire process so you can take action and accomplish more of what you want in your life. I’ll help you identify growth tasks vs maintenance tasks among other things. Don’t worry. It’s all simple - it just takes work, like all things. Enjoy Your Life By Recognizing What You’ve Already Accomplished… Ep 23
Keven Undergaro, AfterBuzz TV’s creator and one of the most influential people in my (Phil Svitek) life, foretold a decade ago that one day, if I subscribed to what he calls the samurai lifestyle, I’d be amazed at what I’d accomplish. First off, the samurai lifestyle is really simple. It demands a focus on the craft and eliminating distractions that take away from your work. Secondly, he was absolutely right. I am truly amazed at all the wonderful opportunities and achievements I’ve been a part of in my professional career over the past 15 years. In this lesson, I want to highlight the importance of taking a moment to reflect back on past accomplishments. Too many times we’re go, go go! It makes us lose sight of why we are doing what we’re doing and it takes the joy out. Life is meant to be enjoyed. You can find happiness in anything. So discover how gratitude can help create momentum to move you forward to new objectives with a sense of passion and purpose! I’ll give you techniques of how to see the beauty in yourself and the world so you can enjoy life. Comment below with any thoughts, questions or opinions you may have for me or Juliet Vibert. Films have the power to move and transform us. They certainly have moved me. In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) highlight 10 films that have impacted me greatly. More importantly, I’ll extract the lessons learned from them and how you too can apply those same insights to help in your creative endeavours and life. The films include The Matrix, Unforgiven, The Marx Brothers’ Room Service, Risen, Gifted, Kubo and the Two Strings, Atonement and others. Any you seen these films? Which ones? If Ignorance Is Bliss, Why Seek Knowledge?… Ep 21
Ever hear the phrase “ignorance is bliss”? Chances are you have. So then let me ask you this, if ignorance is bliss, why seek knowledge at all? Why waste your time listening to me (Phil Svitek) talk about theories and concepts? I know from my own experience that sometimes the more I learn the more confused I am. I wouldn’t be shocked if you’ve listened to my past 20 lessons and scratched your head saying “what is he talking about?” In this lesson I take a deep look at our understanding of what knowledge is and why we’re in search of it. More importantly, I give specifics of what you should look for and what you shouldn’t. Utilizing thinkers such as Don Miguel Ruiz, Viktor Frankl, Sir Isaac Newton and the story of Adam and Eve, I’ll illustrate the power words have in shaping our reality and why we must understand the true nature of knowledge. Be careful, it might just make you question everything. And once you’ve checked out the episode, be sure to comment with any thoughts or questions you may have so I can respond.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/if-ignorance-is-bliss-why-seek-knowledge/ The Voice of Knowledge Book: https://www.amazon.com/Voice-Knowledge-Practical-Guide-Inner/dp/1878424548 Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

The Power of a Small Fan Base… Ep 20
I (Phil Svitek) see lots and lots of people try to emulate social media megastars like Kim Kardashian in order to have the same large fan base, or “reach” as it may be called. Emulate them how? Well, therein lies the problem. The ways in which I see people emulate these celebrities is surface level. They forget the craft and instead seek the result… aka they aim to become famous. I’ve said time and time again, if you’re pursuing a creative passion, you need to have it be your passion. The ultimate goal cannot be fame or money. That’s a byproduct of the value you’re able to bring to people – just like in any other field by the way. Recently, I saw Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and there’s a quote I really like that speaks to this. Don’t worry, it’s not a spoiler. The quote goes, “Look, talent comes everywhere, but having something to say and a way to say it so that people listen to it, that’s a whole other bag. And unless you get out and you try to do it, you’ll never know. That’s just the truth. And there’s one reason we’re supposed to be here is to say something so people want to hear. So you got to grab it, and you don’t apologize, and you don’t worry about why they’re listening, or how long they’re going to be listening for, you just tell them what you want to say.” Looking at it from that perspective, is all you have to say “hey, look at me, I want you to like me”? FOR FUCK’S SAKE STOP WORRYING ABOUT HOW FAMOUS YOU SHOULD BE! Instead, start worrying about what you’re saying and how you’re saying it. Align your art and skills with your values because you will never attract and sustain an audience if you don’t truly captivate them. And guess what? Once you do that, even if you don’t have millions of followers like Kim or Kylie Jenner, you’ll be able to support yourself as an artist and impact an audience. I’ll show you exactly why a small fan base can be stronger than a large one. I’ll reference Almost Famous (with Philip Seymour Hoffman), comedian Adam Carolla and Kevin O’Leary from ABC’s Shark to illustrate certain points. And I’ll go to the source - Kevin Kelly who coined the term “1,000 True Fans”. All these will teach you how a small fan base can earn you a living - the dream of any artist. Write any comments or questions you may have so I can respond too! Homeostasis as a Metaphor for the Creative Process… Ep 19
An artist’s journey is a constant balancing act where s/he must overcome daily hurdles. The term homeostasis, which we learned in science class but probably have forgotten, is actually the perfect metaphor for this ongoing process as a creator. I (Phil Svitek) will explore what I mean by this and more importantly how it can benefit you in your work. I’ll also reference Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art which shares similar notions. Once you begin to understand this concept you can begin to master mental fortitude and unlock your passions that allow you to meet your muse everyday! That’s pretty powerful if you stop to think about it. So check it out! I also encourage you to write any comments or questions you may have so I can respond. PS: The definition of homeostasis is: any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if unsuccessful, disaster or death ensues. The stability attained is actually a dynamic equilibrium, in which continuous change occurs yet relatively uniform conditions prevail. Can you guess how this ties back to an artist’s life before tuning into the episode? Even if you do, I promise there’s many take-aways you’ll gain. Earn $1 Million as a Standalone Business, Even as an Artist: Interview w/ Elaine Pofeldt... Ep 18
Elaine Pofeldt is the author of The Million-Dollar, One Person Business, a Random House book looking at how everyday Americans are breaking $1 million in revenue in businesses with no employees besides the owners. She is a former senior editor at Fortune Small Business magazine and has written about entrepreneurship for publications such as Crain’s New York Business, Fortune, Money, Inc., CNBC and many others. Elaine currently contributes to Forbes. She’s also co-founder of 200kfreelancer.com, a community for indie professionals looking to build a thriving business. I (Phil Svitek) interview her in this episode and explore those principles and have her deconstruct them. Elaine showcases approaches creatives can take to earn a living from their art by using examples she’s witness. I was first introduced to Elaine through Tim Ferriss’ podcast where he highlighted case studies from Elaine’s book. It got me very excited and I just had to read the book. I picked it up and sped through it. It was a very interesting reading that I gained a lot from. I’m excited for you to listen to this interview with her because it’s inspiring to know that as an individual you can earn a very good income on your own terms. Especially for people with creative ambitions, her principles can really help. She is very generous with her answers so I encourage you to take notes. For more information, check out her book and her publications. Be sure to leave a comment with any questions, thoughts, suggestions, etc. Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/earn-one-million-dollars-as-a-standalone-business-even-if-youre-an-artists-an-interview-with-elaine-pofeldt/ The Million-Dollar, One Person Business Book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/039957896X/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=philsvitek-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=039957896X&linkId=c5d92447772cff923b7301730a6abbf5 Elaine Pofeldt’s Website: http://elainepofeldt.com/ Elaine Pofeldt’s Twitter: https://twitter.com/ElainePofeldt  Elaine Pofeldt’s Articles in Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/sites/elainepofeldt/#7486c45e3a00 Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY

How to Achieve Beautiful Moments in Your Life… Ep 17
Ever had an experience that was so profound it altered you forever? Ever had a once in a lifetime experience that brought you so much joy? I’m sure you have. But those moments can be few and far between and many times our of our control. While I (Phil Svitek) truly wish upon you those extraordinarily beautiful moments in your life, I am more concerned with how you find meaning in the everyday. The moments that are much more quiet and subdued. The ones that could even be classified as mundane like laundry, an activity that has to be repeated over and over throughout life. These types of moments we don’t talk about much. They’re certainly not written about it books or shown on TV. If we talk about activities such as doing laundry with anyone it’s usually in a begrudging manner. Like, “crap, I have to do laundry.” But even though we don’t talk about them or consider them much, I want to pose to you that these moments are equally as profound as the once-in-a-lifetime events. Maybe even more so. Here’s why. Because if we can’t learn to find meaning in the everyday then we’ll end up depressed. You can’t just go from one amazing experience to another amazing experience. More often times than not, these monotonous moments amount to more of our time than the special ones. Even successful people that you admire have moments of down time that they need to fill. It is how we fill these moments that defines us. And in this lesson I explore questions such as these and offers insights from the stoics, Viktor Frankl (author of Man’s Search for Meaning), Thomas Edison, Dan Millman (author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior) and artist Andy Goldsworthy to derive at a solution. If you’d like to experience more meaning from life, this episode is for you. Talent Is Not a Skill, It’s a Process… Ep 16
Ever see someone so gifted but never end up amounting to much? That’s because any skill in life must be honed over time lest you lose it. See, I (Phil Svitek) used to think for the longest time that talent was just a skill-set. And yes, talent is a gift of some kind (no matter whether you believe in God, the universe or genetics). But like all gifts, our talents must be honored and not wasted. That’s the difference between those who are successful and those who are not. Successful people exercise their talent and apply it daily. Talent therefore is a journey. That’s how we must think of it moving forward. In this lesson, I expand upon this notion and highlight the importance of making sure you never lose your talents and the ways in which you can practice your craft everyday. I’ll cite stoicism, as depicted by Ryan Holiday in his book The Obstacle is the Way and Pastor Erwin McManus from Mosaic. Comment below with thoughts, opinions, personal experiences, questions, etc. Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/talent-is-not-a-skill-its-a-process/  What It Takes to Be Great by Erwin McManus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BeC2GrSc6I  The Obstacle Is the Way: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1591846358/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=philsvitek-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1591846358&linkId=5d4cb59dafd1c07bcce19c4a0973fbbf Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

Applying the Start-up J Curve to Your Entire Life… Ep 15
Ever start a project with so much enthusiasm and then hours later abandon it because it’s not turning out the way you anticipated? Lots of us have had this experience. In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) will take concepts from Howard Love’s book The Start-Up J Curve, which is geared towards educating entrepreneurs, and apply it to your entire life. See, Howard Love wrote the book in response to a very popular myth about startups. The myth is that if you track a start-up’s progress on a graph, you’ll end up with a diagonal line from the bottom-left corner to the uppermost right corner. That’s because supposedly if you build your business around one really great idea then you’ll enjoy continued, linear growth until you decide to sell. That was not the case with over 50 companies Howard Love was involved in. But he did notice patterns and has since identified six distinct phases during a startup’s life cycle, each with its own growth patterns. And even though we want our lives to be a linear upward slope, it actually ends up resembling the start-up J curve more so than anything else. After enjoying this lesson, please leave a comment or question down below so I can converse with you. What Speak Your Truth Really Means... Ep 14
Oprah and others have stated that “speaking your truth” can be a powerful tool. It can indeed. However, in order to wield this tool, like anything else, we must first understand the true spirit of a statement like “speak your truth”. Because if we don’t, we’ll end up misappropriating the phrase to such aspects that aren’t worthy of it, or worse - things that can be harmful. In today’s lesson, I (Phil Svitek) talk about the notion of speaking your truth. I first started thinking about what speak your truth really means when I, Tonya came out last year. It’s a biographical film, which depicts the story of talented figure skater Tonya Harding as she becomes the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition. In 1994, her world comes crashing down when her ex-husband conspires to injure Nancy Kerrigan, a fellow Olympic hopeful, in a poorly conceived attack that forces the young woman to withdraw from the national championship. Harding’s life and legacy instantly become tarnished as she’s forever associated with one of the most infamous scandals in sports history. Based on the title alone, you can probably tell this film is from the perspective of Tonya Harding. This film went on to create a lot of Oscar buzz and it brought back Tonya Harding into the spotlight in what I would call revisionist history. Meaning suddenly she was a brave woman for speaking her truth. All the while I thought what the hell does Nancy Kerrigan think about all this. I’m sure it can’t be anything pleasant. See, therein lies the danger of a phrase like speak your truth for me. Because it’s not the objective truth. It’s a perspective. More specifically, your perspective. Speaking your truth is a very noble sentiment. However it gets tricky since we also value tolerance and wide ranging thoughts and opinions. And at no point do you want to assign someone else’s truth better or worse than yours. Inherently that is what happens with a phrase like speak your truth. It implies a concrete statement, often times with blind certainty, that negates the other person’s perspective. I’ll unpack how to apply “speak your truth” in the correct way using many examples including The Devil Wears Prada starring Anne Hathaway. Stop Being Ineffective In Your Life and Get Things Done... Ep 10
Are you looking to become more effective in your life - both professionally and personally? Do you find yourself wasting time on useless tasks? This lesson combats everyone’s need for efficiency by telling you what you do is much more important that how you do it. Using examples from Tim Ferriss’s The 4-Hour Workweek, I (Phil Svitek) showcase the differences between being efficient and being effective and how you too can accomplish more of what you want. The answers might not be what you expect, especially if you’re a millennial that’s been praised solely on the basis of your participation effort because in the real world, work and otherwise, participation isn’t the primary metric. Successfully completing tasks is the primary metric. I show you how to do just that. On the Waterfront Scene Study... Ep 9
In this lesson, I (Phil Svitek) am doing something a little different - I’m going to share one of my favorite movie scenes and extrapolate the lesson I take away from it because movies are a beautiful tool that can move us & more importantly, they have the power to teach us about life. The movie I’m highlighting is Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront starring Marlon Brando. While it’s primarily known for its famous “I coulda been a contender” scene, I am using a different scene from the movie to showcase. This movie holds such a precious spot in my heart because it teaches us not only the true meaning of helping others but to also believe in ourselves. After you check out this lesson I hope you’re inspired to watch the full movie, whether it's your first time or you’re just revisiting it. Let me know what you took away from the scene or the full movie (if you’ve seen it). Living Vicariously Through Social Media... Ep 8
In today’s social media driven world, I (Phil Svitek) wonder about the why of it all. Why are we so obsessed with social media? Why does it consume our time so frequently? Why does it cause us stress sometimes? One day I had an epiphany. Social media is a form of living vicariously. Many times we use social media as a means to judge and compare ourselves to whoever it is we’re looking at. But what we’re really saying is I want to be that person. I want to look like that person. Why You Can't Afford Not To Read... Ep 7
There’s been a gradual decline in reading across America. This is very sad, because ultimately, it’s only hurting those who aren’t reading. There’s so many benefits to reading - in this week’s lesson I (Phil Svitek) share all those benefits. Here’s just a sample of one - Brazilian professor Paulo Freire says this about reading: “Reading is not exhausted merely by decoding the written word or written language, but rather anticipated by and extending into knowledge of the world. Reading the world precedes reading the word, and the subsequent reading of the word cannot dispense with continually reading the world. Language and reality are dynamically intertwined. The understanding attained by critical reading of a text implies perceiving the relationship between text and context.” That’s right - reading has proven to create a greater empathy and understanding of the world. In today’s global landscape, this because ultra important, in my mind at least. And it saddens me when I hear people abandoning the act of reading all together. Anyway, I’ll highlight other benefits to reading and how you too can read a book a week just like the most successful people in the world. Comment below with any questions or comments you have and more importantly the books you’re reading and recommend to others! Importance of Routines And Systems... Ep 6
In order for me (Phil Svitek) to run such a large scale entity as AfterBuzz TV, it’s important for me to have systems and routines in place both on a personal and company level. In this lesson, I’ll first define what I mean by routines and highlight how structure is the backbone of routines that then create a system, which is really a way of saying how you carry out the routines or processes. The better the system, the more effective your routines are. I’ll begin by talking about you as an individual and then expand it into a larger context. Now, I know some of you are adverse to routines because you have a negative association with the word and so I’ll kick things off with explaining how routines can liberate your life rather than restrict it. Comment below with any questions or opinions you have.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/importance-of-routines-systems/  Industry Week Article: https://www.industryweek.com/strategic-planning-execution/importance-fundamentals  Why Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect Episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXxoYIy3p9o&t=10s Going Back to the Basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHeliNTCtEg Ray Dalio’s All Weather Portfolio: http://awealthofcommonsense.com/2014/11/back-testing-tony-robbins-weather-portfolio/ or https://seekingalpha.com/article/3350735-duplicating-the-all-weather-fund-using-low-cost-etfs Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

Going Back To The Basics... Ep 5
I (Phil Svitek) will take you back to the basics. The basics of what, you might be thinking? It’s not the basics of any subject but rather the importance of allowing yourself to reset to a starting position. In every discipline there is a starting position. The thing or things you should learn first. In learning these, you can then advance to the next, more difficult part of that discipline. It’s like climbing stairs. You take one by one from the bottom until you get to the top. A lot of this is so plain and simple and yet every day people try to skip sections or whole parts entirely. They are too impatient. Learning the fundamentals seems boring and wasteful of their time. They want to be masters right away. Nothing in life works this way. Trust me. It may for a short time, more than likely attributed to dumb luck, but in time you’ll be exposed a fraud. In this lesson, I’ll highlight three things. First, how do we define the basics, secondly what does resetting to a starting position mean and three, why is it important for you to do so. To reinforce the lesson, I use quotes from Kobe Bryant, Jim Rohn, Gandhi, Vince Lombardi and others. Working at the Speed of Thought… Ep 4
Humans have lots of ideas, some good, some bad, but nonetheless we all have lots of them. One of my (Phil Svitek) biggest pet peeves, whether for myself or others, is when those good ideas don’t get executed. I’m almost certain you can relate to this feeling in your own life. How many times have you thought of something brilliant but it never got done? You think about it from time to time, say you’ll get started but never do. That’s the problem with ideas. They’re a dime a dozen. It’s the execution that matters. And working at the speed of thought, if truly done properly, eradicates the bottlenecks, frustrations, obstacles, and so on of the process in taking an idea from concept to conception. Allow me to illustrate what I mean by working at the speed of thought and how you can apply it to your projects. I’ll cite filmmaker Robert Rodriquez among others as part of this lesson. Comment below with any questions or comments you have.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/working-at-the-speed-of-thought/  Speed of Thought Article: https://earthsky.org/human-world/what-is-the-speed-of-thought  Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

No Hurry, No Pause... Ep 3
Imagine two men biking, one at a rapid pace and the other at a leisurely pace. How long do you think it takes them to bike 25 miles? The answer might surprise you, as it surprised me (Phil Svitek), because the answer is there’s not much of a difference. The biker that sped would only pull ahead by a minute or two. That may sound like an abstract math problem but it’s actually not. It’s a story that entrepreneur Derek Sivers shared on the Tim Ferriss podcast. When I heard this story, I had an epiphany, incidentally much like Tim. For years I’d approached all my work from a knock it out quick standpoint. I’d rush as fast as I could. At times that left me tired and the work somewhat to be desired. Because I was tired, I was slower with my next tasks, and then even more slower with the one after that. Sad to admit, I got angry at times too. At myself, sometimes at others. In terms of the work, I luckily have an insane amount of stamina and determination to accomplish projects. But year after year, it took a toll on me. Upon being told Siver’s story, I realized I was the biker who sped through the 25 miles. All to “just get it done.” More importantly, I realized there was a better way to knock out action steps without exhausting myself. That’s the lesson I share with you today and it can be summarized in four simple words - no hurry, no pause. Discover what that truly means and how it can change your life. Comment below with any questions or comments you have.  Full Transcript: https://philsvitek.com/no-hurry-no-pause/  Apple Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/a-phil-svitek-podcast/id1211417581?mt=2  AfterBuzz Contact Page: http://www.afterbuzztv.com/contact-faq/#toggle-id-18  Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLd-Q6qZNFcQ9MJLXMMpSCJcjPAq-5lepX  SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/phil-svitek  Facebook: http://facebook.com/philippsvitek  Google Podcast: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy82ZGIwYWEwL3BvZGNhc3QvcnNz Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0Ac7WjgaGaIAmc4nEZJFIY  Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/anchor-podcasts/a-phil-svitek-podcast Anchor: https://anchor.fm/phil-svitek  Phil’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/philsvitek  Juliet’s Instagram: http://instagram.com/bonjourjuliet  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/philsvitek

What You Do When You Dont Know...? Ep 2
As a culture, I find we’re OBSESSED with quiz shows. Why? It’s a simple answer: we love to test our knowledge. We put value on intelligence. It becomes a literal competition to see who is the smartest. You can look beyond quiz shows and look at any standardized tests as further evidence of that. As much as I appreciate smart people, I’ve come to realize that the true test is not what you know, it’s what you do when you don’t know. It’s how you overcome obstacles..that’s the real test of the mind. It’s easy to look at someone we think is smarter than us and feel inferior. The reality is none of us are born with any knowledge. It must be learned and attained throughout life. As writer David Foster Wallace said, “I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think.” That’s right. We must learn how to think in order to learn because if we don’t, we’ll forever feel overwhelmed by any subject – simple or complex. This is what I, Phil Svitek, will teach you in today’s lesson - to learn what to do when you don’t know. I’ll give you strategies and tactics I’ve learned used firsthand. Why Practice Doesn't Make Perfect... Ep 1
I’m sure you’ve heard more than once the expression practice makes perfect. The idea that you can attain perfection by means of practice has been ingrained in you so much so that it’s become counter-productive. Practice makes perfect is a false term. And here is why - if practice made people perfect, then there’s a lot of people out there that would be amazing at what they do. You and I both know that’s not the case. Instead, there’s another phrase we need to consider, one that I learned from my high school soccer coach. Listen to this lesson of mine (Phil Svitek) to learn what that phrase really implies and how it can benefit you even if you’re not an athlete.
