E205 - Addison's Disease Groundhog Day - Margot's Story
What happens when two new friends chat about the diagnosis of Addison's Disease? They share and can relate to each other in ways ONLY people living with adrenal insufficiency can. And this episode speaks volumes! Margot shares her diagnosis of Addison's Disease in 2013 after years of being told it was "ALL IN HER HEAD", and fighting the progression of what she refers to as "BIOLOGICAL EXHAUSTION". The physical exhaustion that rest never resolves. Feeling like she was living the movie GROUNDHOG DOG...all she wanted was to feel better. Hyperpigmentation, extreme weight loss, crippling fatigue, unable to regulate her body temperature led to her fear of going to sleep on not waking up. Repeated patterns over the years of symptoms that fell on deaf ears in the medical community. One night feeling as if she was having a heart attack she ended up in the ER. Dismissed again by the ER nurse as Margot desperately sought care. Extremely low blood pressure FINALLY made her story legitimate. The ER doctor quickly recognized she had ADDISON'S DISEASE. The goal was a 40 minutes episode but when friends share and relate it turns into 1 hour and 20 minutes. Listen, watch, relate, share, laugh and cry with my new friend Margot. We are a family and as a family, we can make a difference. E204 - PART 2 THE MIRACLE OF MOLLY - A Mother's Love of Advocacy
A child often sees their parent as a hero. And Molly certainly knew her MOM Rachel was her SUPER HERO. Molly's diagnosis story was shared with us in E198- PART 1 THE MIRACLE OF MOLLY. Molly was diagnosed at age 14 with HYPOPITUITARISM and SECONDARY ADRENALIN INSUFFICIENCY. It was a long road to reach a diagnosis and the seriousness of this condition for her daughter led Rachel into a grieving process and then fuelled her to fight for change for her daughter. Hearing horror stories of parents losing their children to ADRENAL CRISIS terrified Rachel. She knew Molly lived on a cliff's edge every day in a world full of roadblocks and ignorance of her condition. Rachel fought for over a decade to make Molly's world safe but unfortunately in July of 2022, Rachel's worst fears became reality. Molly passed away from an adrenal crisis. Even if you are a SUPERHERO, you can not save everyone. Rachel is determined to continue her advocacy work, increase awareness and prevent as many deaths as possible from an adrenal crisis. No family should lose someone to an adrenal crisis. Listen, share and learn how you can help and be part of saving lives from adrenal crisis. E202 - MEKO - Sudden Loss and Addison's Disease
I share with you more of what happened to my almost 10-year-old Doberman Meko on Good Friday who suddenly passed away. In a high-stress situation, I was left to assess my own health status to make sure I did not go into an adrenal crisis. Let the loss of my boy Meko remind us all of the importance of being prepared for our own emergencies and being prepared and setting boundaries when we are dealing with an emergency situation. I am also left with some important questions to ask my family doctor to understand how my body responds in acute stress situations.

https://youtu.be/AlZARvUIFZIHaving an adrenal insufficiency can lead us to NUMEROUS trips to the emergency room.
There will be times when OTHER emergencies arise that if we are not careful could put us into a CRISIS and instead of assisting the original emergency we are now part of it.
This episode was inspired by my friend Lisa who has experienced a few situations that have brought her awareness of the IMPORTANCE of managing her ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY and preventing an adrenal crisis while managing other stressful situations.
Jill and Lisa offer their TIPS of managing emergencies, setting limitations and finding a FUNCTIONAL ROLE while managing our illness.

E201 - Osteoporosis & Adrenal Insufficiency - Jill's Opinion
Living with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY without question will come at a cost long term. I am living in a body that can not survive without medication every day. That medication is STEROIDS.We are PREACHED steroids are bad.
We are PREACHED to lower your steroids.
We are PREACHED it is the steroid's fault.
The steroids are saving my life EVERY DAY.
Maybe, just maybe it isn't the steroid's fault.
Maybe, just maybe it is the lack of support and knowledge of medical teams.
Maybe, just maybe it is the lack of technology for people living with adrenal insufficiency.
I am a little fired up in this one after a recent endocrinologist appointment with a doctor saying he cared about my health long term but spent less then 10 minutes with me, quickly viewed blood work and his only advice was "LOWER YOUR STEROIDS AND I WILL SEE YOU IN A YEAR"

E197 - She Had No Idea
13 years ago I was given my second chance at life when I was diagnosed with Addison's Disease. There were a lot I had of things I had NO IDEA about what I was going to learn on this journey. I had no idea about the lack of support and guidance I would receive and the struggles I would continue to face. There were a lot of other things I had NO IDEA about what this 13-year journey would teach me. No matter what mountains you have to climb, or the battles you are facing...there is a choice to make. I made a choice and I found the support, guidance and hope I needed to thrive in life with Addison's Disease.

E196 - HIGHLIGHT REELS - 13 Years of Addison's Disease
This week was my 13th Anniversary of officially being diagnosed with Addison's Disease. 13 years ago I was given an answer to my health issues and a second chance at life. There have been many 'HIGHLIGHTS' over the last 13 years and I tell them honestly from my GAME CHANGER MOMENTS TO the MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS said to me by healthcare professionals (and my responses), my SCARIEST MOMENTS and the BEST MOMENTS. It has been a journey full of the unknown, full of fear, full of hope, and full of strength I never knew I had.

E195 - There is a PAP for that!!
FIRST...exciting news to share about the PICKLE JAR! And the adventures continue!!! Staying on top of my health is a priority. Maintenance and prevention is key. A couple abnormal PAPs (yes please censor if you need to this is getting personal) and I had part of my cervical lining removed. I did several things to prepare. Personally, things like this do not bother me. I find a dental visit more traumatizing. And if these little nasty cells are going to cause any issues...well sooner I know the better and they are better out then in. I was prepared and it relaxed any anxiety I may have (which is minimal). If you can survive death in an adrenal crisis with SKY ROCKEtiNG POTASSIUM...let's be serious...this is nothing. ✅ Doctor ordered extra meds - DONE ✅ ATIVAN to relax - DONE ✅ ADVOCATE along for the ride - DONE ✅ EMERGENCY syringe prepared (just in case) - DONE Upon arrival, I was told the freezing would increase my heart rate and cause panic attack responses to the body. I expressed my concern about the increase of metabolism may have on my cortisol levels although I took the recommended extra dose. NO PROBLEM - BACKUP PLAN FOR FREEZING. Well the backup plan didn't freeze which led to intense pain, you know where. Super dose this girl with freezing to get the job done. Two new areas of concern were noted so biopsies were taken. I will worry about that when and if there is a concern. Again...better to know than not to know. My doctor always told me if an infection or cancer becomes a concern for you...we will know early because you will be in an adrenal crisis before it is very serious. HOT DOG!!! Finally a perk of Addison's Disease. This girl goes into crisis before a bladder infection gets out of control.
Now to rest, heal and keep living my life!!

E192 - Rebuliding Life with Addison's Disease - Education, Medication & Gratitude
A very special episode in THE PICKLE JAR as Mauve joins us on the year anniversary of when she was admitted to hospital after losing her speech during a Zoom call. Unaware at the time that the changes that had been taking place with her body - extreme fatigue, darkening skin, low blood pressure and salt cravings were a cry for help from her failing body. A few days later at the age 30, Mauve was diagnosed with Addison's Disease.
After a lot of harsh lessons from day one with a medical system that was not equipped to manage her new diagnosis, Mauve took matters into her own hands and started learning everything she could about her illness. Everything from websites to podcasts, to Instagram she became passionate about learning how to live with Addison's disease and rebuild her life.
In the last 365 days, she has conquered surgery, travel, switched endocrinologists, and found a health care team willing to work with her medication to optimize her quality of life and she feels she has returned to 85% of who she is.
An inspiring journey fuelled by education, medication and gratitude.

E186 - Mommy Power Versus Adrenal Insufficiency
There is nothing more amazing than MOMMY SUPERPOWERS!
My most recent guest on THE PICKLE JAR PODCAST used her MOMMY SUPERPOWERS to dominate diagnosis and fast-track her son's prognosis with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.
After years of steroid treatments for other ailments, her son was diagnosed with secondary adrenal insufficiency. Catharine has been confronted with many obstacles people face with an ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY diagnosis.
A short conversation delivered the diagnosis with a "Don't Worry" attitude from the doctor, and little advice and direction on what managing this complicated and life-threatening illness means.
MOMMY GOOGLE to the rescue and Catharine realized this was not a "Don't Worry" diagnosis.
Catharine used her resources and advocated for her son to find the answers she needed
And now because of MOMMY SUPER POWER, Will is thriving in life with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

Jill's official diagnosis of ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY was in 2001 at the age of 35 but she can trace symptoms back until she was in high school. She gives a quick overview of those symptoms and how they progressed over the years as her body destroyed her adrenal glands. She also tells you her thoughts on people being diagnosed with ADRENAL FATIGUE.

E183 - Bucket List Diagnosis - Ellen's Adrenal Insufficiency Story
For over 4 years Ellen struggled with failing health which led her to wonder if this is the end. Multiple diagnoses and treatments during the pandemic left Ellen often alone and fighting for her health. Symptoms that were physically crippling and reoccurring bouts of abdominal pain, extreme muscle weakness and eventually tan skin and extremely low blood pressure. With two small children she was unable to take care of and a caring devoted husband Ellen created her BUCKET LIST of things she wanted to experience fearing her end was near. She was often treated with prednisone as the doctors desperately tried to weed through her symptoms and make her well. A blood test of low cortisol from years early was an important piece of the puzzle when Ellen mentioned it to her doctor. Quickly referred to an endocrinologist and the rest of the puzzle started to come together. Ellen has ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY. For only being diagnosed in December of 2023, Ellen has lots of GREAT ADVICE and INSIGHT to this illness. You will feel her struggle and you also feel her hope and renewed strength. Ellen is on her way to living life with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

E182 - THE SPOON THEORY - ADDISON STYLE
The SPOON THEORY of chronic illness was created in 2003 by US writer and blogger CHRISTINE MISERANDINO. A metaphor to explain to a friend what life was like for her living with LUPUS. At a restaurant, she grabs some spoons and explains each spoon represents ENERGY. Living with a chronic illness we need to ration our spoons to manage daily tasks. Someone not living with a chronic illness has LIMITLESS SPOONS...unlike someone with a chronic illness. Jill explains the role of cortisol in the body and how all 30 trillion cells of the human body at any given moment are using cortisol and depleting our spoons. When someone with adrenal insufficiency runs OUT OF SPOONS...every cell in the body is struggling.

E181 - And She Cried
Last week Jill hit a CORTISOL LOW that left her wandering around her house in tears. Her CORTISOL LOW brought on emotions of anger and frustrations of living with a chronic illness. Emotions that need to be experienced and acknowledged. The next day she pulled up her BIG GIRLS SOCKS and continued her fight against ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY!

E180 -Steroid Myopathy
THE PICKLE JAR
ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY PODCAST
For over 2 years Jill has been trying to FIGURE out what is happening to her hands. Her first symptom was having a hard time opening packages followed by her fingers 'falling' away from the joints.
Initial tests show no arthritis, and no carpal tunnel...all the 'usual' causes were eliminated.
Living with a RARE chronic illness you are 'warned' these illnesses travel in 'packs'. Instant fear and anxiety...which illness is this now?
EMGs, PLASTIC SURGEON, MUSCLE TESTING and more all lead to the conclusion this is a steroid side effect.
Today Jill had an appointment with a rheumatologist who agreed. Her tiny hands are losing muscle from over 13 years of steroid use.

E178 - When We Are NOT the EMERGENCY
Having an adrenal insufficiency can lead us to NUMEROUS trips to the emergency room. There will be times when OTHER emergencies arise that if we are not careful could put us into a CRISIS and instead of assisting the original emergency we are now part of it.
This episode was inspired by my friend Lisa who has experienced a few situations that have brought her awareness the IMPORTANCE of managing her ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY and preventing an adrenal crisis while managing other stressful situations.
Jill and Lisa offer their TIPS of managing emergencies, setting limitations and finding a FUNCTIONAL ROLE while managing our illness.

E177 - HOSPITAL HILTON
Over the last 13 years of LIVING with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY Jill has made over 30 trips to the emergency room. With every experience, she gained knowledge on how to be BETTER prepared to advocate for herself.
In the 'early' days she had 'faith' in the medical community to manage her illness but she quickly learned SHE WAS IN CHARGE and needed to be prepared for EVERY SITUATION.
She now arrives at the emergency room as if she is arriving for a stay at the HILTON. Hospital bag fully equipment from meds, to phone charges, to salt and snacks. Along side her ENTERTAINMENT bag to pass the time and be prepared for possibly an extended stay.
In this episode, Jill unpacks her HOSPITAL BAG and provides you with an INSIDE LOOK at what you can do to be prepared for a trip to the EMERGENCY ROOM.
Jill also shares some of her TOP EMERGENCY ROOM moments...good and bad.

E176 - ROCK STAR - Just Like Her Momma
Jill experienced a PROUD Mommy moment and another confirmation about the 'reason' she was diagnosed with Adrenal Insufficiency.
Since diagnosis in March of 2011, Jill has worked HARD at having a CARING, COMPASSIONATE medical team that understands the seriousness of ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY and recognizes that Jill's quality of life directly reflects how well the illness is being managed.
A daughter who is being 'watched' for ADDISON'S DISEASE is off to post-secondary education away from home. She is dealing with being 'sick' away from home and made her MOMMA proud. The first diagnosis was STREP THROAT but through her persistence, she was diagnosed with MONO. It was blood work, follow-ups, and dealing with a medical community when she mentioned "I am being followed for ADDISON'S DISEASE" which clearly communicated their lack of knowledge and concern.
Her MOMMA has set high standards for her care and she did an amazing job managing her health away from home.
Jill sees the quality it has already added to her daughter's life and IF she is diagnosed with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY Jill knows she will be a ROCK STAR JUST LIKE HER MOMMA.
E175 - "CAT"astrophic Diagnosis with Addison's Disease
Michellel's journey with ADDISON'S DISEASE started 4 years before she was diagnosed. She led a healthy active lifestyle. Her first symptom was aching joints and a rapid 10 lb weight loss on an already lean body. As time progressed she was overcome with fatigue and being nauseous.
When Michelle lost her beloved CAT it led her down a 'cat'-astrophic path. After days of grieving her loss, Michelle NOW did not have the strength to get out of bed. The emotional stress of the loss who took much for her adrenal glands to manage. Her body was giving up.
A previous health diagnosis led to an alert doctor to test her cortisol and recommend an endocrinologist. She was quickly diagnosed with PRIMARY ADDISON'S DISEASE.
Along the journey, she has been blessed with a family and medical team who take the seriousness of her illness seriously and hold her quality of life as a high priority.
Michelle is now LIVING a full life with Addison's Disease.

E174 - LAX WITH ME
Jill is stepping out of her comfort zone in this episode sharing with you personal details of clearing out her backup system. The delicate process of managing a happy pooper and preventing throwing off her electrolyte balance. Her chronic dehydration with her adrenal insufficiency has always given her a 'sluggish' system...complicate that with back injuries, overfeasting at Christmas and side effects of narcotics for pain management...her systems were failing here. But she discovered a new remedy to gently restore a happy pooper.
She also shares insight into the watchful eye they have been keeping on her daughter who is now 19 years old for Addison's Disease. For the last 10 years, her daughter has shown signs of struggling adrenal glands which may be leading her to ADDISON'S DISEASE.
Quality of life with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY is beyond the medication. Controlling the STRESSORS in your life and supporting your body is a POWERFUL resource we have in writing our stories with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.

E173 - Michelle's Power Journey with Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency
Michelle's recent diagnosis with SECONDARY ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY (December 2023) as a result of breast cancer treatment led her into a new chapter in her life. This chapter is in a book of years of autoimmune challenges, which Michelle recognizes as a learning process in life.
Her strong, confident and contagious attitude will inspire you to create your POWER TO DO LIST to get back at life. When something is not working for her, Michelle finds a way day by day to overcome it. She has no plans of 'leaving this body' anytime soon and has found a way to appreciate and live life in the moment.

E169 - What's Hard?
Let's chat about the HARD things in life.
Living with a chronic illness is HARD especially one that is RARE, MISUNDERSTOOD and not properly treated.
My first husband died tragically on June 16, 2000.
He was 26. I was 24. Married 9 months 5 days. 8 weeks pregnant.
Our families found out I was pregnant when he died.
It was Father's Day weekend in 2000.
HARD....is having your doorbell ring and being told your husband is dead.
HARD... is giving birth alone and scared.
HARD...is the intense soul-ripping pain of grief.
The other night I had a funeral visitation for a sweet 95-year-old beam of light.
She was like a grandmother to my first husband.
Visitation was at the funeral home where my first husband’s funeral was.
I could see him. Feel him. Remember him. The crowd. The sounds. The chaos. My flower skirt and blue top. THE DANCE is playing by Garth Brooks. The colour of the sky. His cowboy hat is on the casket. The last goodbye. Watching his friends carry is casket. The ride to the cemetery. The pain of walking away and leaving him there.
OUR son was with me. He looks like his dad. People shared memories of his Dad with him. It broke me in pieces knowing they never met. I shared with him moments I remember from the funeral.
I fought and survived. I know that I can overcome any obstacle in front of me.
Losing him was hard. Returning to the funeral home was hard.
But it reminded me of my blessings.
What you do is your choice.
I had no choice 23 years ago in death.
And then I had a choice 23 years ago in death.
I had no choice 13 years ago in illness.
And then I had a choice 13 years ago in illness.
I continue to fight. Anything you want in life is worth fighting for.
In his death, he taught me how to fight.
I continue to fight.
DEATH is hard. CHRONIC ILLNESS is hard.
Taking care of YOU.....makes the HARD less HARD.
Growing old is a blessing. Second chances are a blessing.
I chose to fight.
I chose to fight.
In his death, he gave me life.
YOU ARE WORTH FIGHTING FOR.
But you have a choice!
I KNOW HARD but I am a fighter and so are you!
E168 - CHRISTMAS CORTISOL STORY
Holidays are upon us and for those living with Adrenal Insufficiency, this often means low cortisol and cancelled plans. Jill puts her frustration over the holidays with Addison's DISEASE into what she calls the "CHRISTMAS CORTISOL STORY". The CORTISOL GRINCH may try to steal her holiday cheer each year but she reflects and remembers her holidays with ADDISON'S DISEASE may be quiet but it is BRIGHT.
E167 - Helen's Second Chance
Helen shares her AMAZING JOURNEY of being diagnosed with ADDISON'S DISEASE in July 2023. This sneaky illness slowly crept in stealing her of her strength and leading to undetectable blood pressure. Helen views her diagnosis as a second chance at life and has taken a proactive approach to battle Addison's Disease and to give her body what it needs to stay strong.
A journey of hope, a journey of strength, a journey of self-love.
She is leading by example and showing Addison's Disease who is in control.

E164 - Jill Rides the ADDISON'S DISEASE SCRAMBLER
The scrambler ride effect buries Jill in sadness and wondering why her life is NEVER EASY. Why can't she live the life she planned? A widow at 24 and pregnant with her son only to come into an emotionally abusive marriage that destroyed her self-worth and amid everything diagnosed with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY. A disease she knew of all her life as her father died of an adrenal crisis at 56 years.
A few days a "POOR" Jill and she knows she needs to see WHAT IS not might have been. So many WONDERFUL things in her life to celebrate. Maybe life for her is not elaborate parties and functions...maybe is it quiet excitement on her terms with the bright lights in her life. And she has a lot of BRIGHT LIGHTS.
She took a BIG step today and wore a Halloween costume to work. She did it without the fear of ridicule from voices in the past. She did it with self-love and allowing herself to live her best life. Because she deserves it.
Today she moved forward with ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY.
