E4.15: Heal Thy Self, Guest Kyndall Clark Osibodu, Founder, The Runner's Apothecary

Based in Brooklyn, by way of Atlanta and Chicago, Kyndall is a facilitator, certified mindfulness instructor, and entrepreneur. She has spent the last ten years centering the leadership and well-being of girls and women of color through education, advocacy, and philanthropy.

After witnessing the magic of the NYC marathon in 2021, she decided to become a runner. As a newbie, she found the beginning of her running journey challenging and painful. Looking for a natural alternative to pain relief, she created a hemp-derived muscle salve. The Runner's Apothecary, a holistic wellness brand for runners, other athletes, and other humans who move their bodies, was born. The Runner’s Apothecary creates plant-based body products to support recovery and overall well-being and to facilitate less reliance on OTC pharmaceuticals. Through her business and life, Kyndall is passionate about supporting communities’ access to holistic health through movement, plant wisdom, and meditation.

Sandra Mikulic is a self proclaimed plus size runner and triathlete. In March 2018, at the age of 43, she started running and that's where her story of self transcendence begins. E.3.16: No Boundaries, We are Boundless, Guest Kennith Pinckney

E.3.16: No Boundaries, We are Boundless, Guest Kennith Pinckney

Kennith Pinckney is an endurance athlete and entrepreneur based in San Diego, California. At the age of 29, Kennith decided to join the United States Navy - not knowing how to swim. After 50 tries, 3 months and walking to the swimming facilities in the middle of winter, Kennith finally passed his Navy swimming qualifications.
Thus began life as a career Navy man. Kennith describes his first few years as "getting by" which finally caught up with him, when he failed his weigh-in. At 240 lbs, Kennith faced a new challenge to change or simply stay the same. Kennith decided it was time for a big change. He decided to start running.
With the help of his coach, Kennith lost weight, passed his weight quals in the Navy and eventually became CFL Command Fitness Leader in his Naval Reserve Unit. Kennith says: "I was transformed physically and mentally...I went from running 14:00/mile to running 11:00/mile...So far, I have lived a life full of uncertainties, hopelessness, hopeful, failures, triumph, different directions, anxiety, feeling of unworthiness , gratefulness, disappointments, and gratitude which I am at the present moment."
Kennith invites all runners to remember: "The journey we all live is going to be hills, valleys, peaks, mountains to climb. There is no limit on what we can do, what we can overcome, how much we can do, we all can be BOUNDLESS. To be boundless is to Love it, Hate it, Embrace….the Journey, your journey. Hopefully we all can go on this journey together and be BOUNDLESS."

E3.15: Find a Way to Run, Guest April Pullins

E3.15: Find a Way to Run, Guest April Pullins

April Pullins is originally from Chicago, IL. She has also lived in Phoenix, AZ and now resides in Atlanta, GA with her husband and three sons. Previously, April worked as a special educator working with deaf children in K-12 education. In 2014, April left her 15 year career in education to pursue life as an entrepreneur and independent ASL Interpreter.

While living in Arizona, April’s sister in law started running and training for marathons. She was fascinated by the sport and even more so by her sister in laws’ persistence in training through Arizona heat. This planted the seed for the future.

A few years later, during a difficult time in her marriage, April opened her front door and just went for a run. She enjoyed the seeing the beauty around her and the peace of mind running gave her. It was running that carried her through a challenging time. But, after she and her husband worked things out, she put running on the back burner.

Fast forward to the COVID-19 pandemic, a fellow sign language interpreter lost 70 pounds running and working out. It was seeing her friend’s success that encouraged April to hit her stride last year. The timing was perfect as April was also battling depression. It was again through running that April was able to reconnect with herself. To date, April has run a handful of 5k’s and 10K’s and she is currently training for her first half marathon.

E3.14: A Run Through It, Guest Phyllis Stanley

E3.14: A Run Through It, Guest Phyllis Stanley

Phyllis Stanley is an ultra runner based out of the Pacific Northwest (PNW), prime country for glorious mountain trails. She and her two boys live in a small town called Montesano which is about 43 miles west of Olympia, Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountains along with the Cascades Mountains.
Phyllis was born and raised in Arizona on the Navajo Nation just outside of small reservation town called Kayenta. It was a complete rural setting without typical American household amenities like running water, indoor plumbing, and electricity. Growing up, there was no shortage of work or chores, daily and year round, because her family owned a huge herd of cattle, horses, sheep and goats. Phyllis’ parents practiced traditional Navajo spiritual customs, so her days always began with early morning runs to the east to greet the holy spirits before sunrise. Rain, sleet, or hail, as a family, they always ran together (unless you were in bed with the flu, of course!). Every summer Phyllis, her parents and siblings also planted a big field of corn, but not your average sized garden plot, it was an acre corn field! They also planted and harvested variety of squash, melons and other vegetables. Early in 1986, Phyllis’ dad passed away in an automobile accident. Her mom did her best to continue but had to downsize because it was too much to manage.
After losing many very dear loved ones, trail running became a way to help Phyllis grieve. Phyllis lost her mom in 2012, followed by an older sister two years later, to cancer. Then in 2018, Phyllis lost her brother JB after a bout with stomach cancer in 2018. Losing her brother turned her world upside down because he was an inspirational person in her life. Phyllis dove into trail running as a way to cope with onsetting depression and it became only thing that was helpful in processing her grief. Phyllis completed her first 50 miler on July 27, 2019, exactly a year to the day that her brother passed away. It was the White River 50 which takes place in the shadow of Mount Rainier (think lots of elevation gain). Phyllis was crewed by her late fiancè (along with her two sons), Luis, who passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer last year, Oct 2020 - just two weeks shy of his 43rd birthday.
Of the last few years, Phyllis says, “It's been a trying time but also survive-able thanks to ultra running. It's definitely given me a new perspective and appreciation for loving with a full heart because we just don't know when is our last day on this planet.”

E3.13.2: Be Kinder, Guest Jodie Bayardo

E3.13.2: Be Kinder, Guest Jodie Bayardo

Jodie Bayardo is a 34 year old mom from Central Florida.  She works full time as an operations manager in the mortgage industry; she is also pursuing her MBA. Jodie also happens to be legally blind! She is very passionate about advocacy for accessibility in the workplace and in sports. Jodie uses her social media platforms to document my life and change the way that society views sight loss. Jodie says, "I may have lost my sight - but I have found my vision!".

In 2014, after having her son, Jodie began running as a weight loss effort. Her journey was interrupted, though, when she began losing her sight at age 29. As she learned to navigate the changes in her life and body, running became more about her mental health. Running was a constant reminder to Jodie that she was still capable! Running has carried her through some of the darkest days and taught Jodie to love and respect her body in all of its forms and phases. Today, Jodie is a 3 time marathoner, an 18 time half marathoner, and she's chasing the World Majors! She's been toying with ultra running. Currently, Jodie is training for Disney’s Dopey Challenge in January of 2022.

E3.13: What You Think About You Bring About, Guest Deo Kato

E3.13: What You Think About You Bring About, Guest Deo Kato

Deo Kato (aka Deoruns) is a plant-based Endurance athlete, Adventurer, PT & Running Coach and Activist. He recently completed a run streak by running a minimum of 10km every day for 381 days from 06th of June 2020 to 21st of June 2021. The 381-day protest run honors those of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-56 and the bravery shown by those who fought against racial segregation. Following the murders of Ahmaud Aurbery, Bryonna Taylor and George Floyd in 2020, Deo set off to use running as a form of activism and to bring about change for the issues that matter most to him.   Deo started running  as a way to find a solution to an undiagnosed health condition that affected his body. The condition prevented Deo from doing any physical activity or being in warm or hot environments. Deo's doctor told him that there was nothing wrong with him and that the condition that affected was all in his head. That's when he knew he had to figure out a way to heal his body.

E3.6: All Things Are Possible, Guest Mayra Lopez

Mayra Lopez Garcia is a proud Mexican American, born and raised in South Los Angeles. She currently lives in Palmdale, CA. She works with the homeless families and individuals as a  housing stabilizer.   She started running in her junior year by joining the her high school cross-country team. As she started running, coming from a softball background, she slowly started to lose weight. As she started to see her body change running became an obsession, she wanted to run more and lose more weight. As a result she began to stop eating and developed the eating disorder, anorexia. She became very good at hiding her eating and exercise habits. Eventually Mayra's coach noticed her weight loss and encouraged her recovery.  Mayra says, "I am thankful that I was able to get out from my eating disorder, but it still hunts me here and there today. I catch myself comparing myself to others. I want others to know that any person who runs has a “runner’s body” no matter the weight, build, age, ability or health status. It took me some time, but I am thankful for my body per it has endured tough workouts, ran many races."   Mayra has run distances from  the 5k up to a 58 Mile race. She continues to run with F.A.C.T Team and her current coach. She qualified for and is training for Boston Marathon 2021 and the Rio De Lago 100 which are a month apart.  For Mayra, running has brought many good people into her life including her  fiancé, who proposed when he finished Angeles Crest 100 Miler in 2016.

E3.1: Black Trail Runners, Guest Sabrina Pace Humphrey’s

E3.1: Black Trail Runners, Guest Sabrina Pace Humphrey’s

Sabrina Pace-Humphreys – Ultrarunning mum of 4 and co-founder of Black Trail Runners. Sabrina is a 42 year old mother of 4 and grandmother of 2. She started running after the birth of her fourth child in 2009. She initially took up the sport as a way to lose 5 stones of weight gained through her pregnancy, and manage her mental health while living with post-natal depression. By self coaching over time she lost the weight but also found a passion for running and used it as a way to ‘reclaim herself’ while living with anxiety and depression. In her early running journey, Sabrina completed a variety of distances from 5K to marathon distance and has travelled the world via the love of her sport – completing New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Edinburgh and London Marathon to name but a few.

In 2016 Sabrina increased her distance to ultra marathon and found a love of trail running while preparing to run the toughest footrace on earth – the Marathon Des Sables – a 250K multi-day ultramarathon in the Sahara desert. This was an adventure she wanted to ‘compete’ in as a goal event to celebrate her 40th birthday. In 2018, Sabrina completed this race as 13th UK woman to cross the finish line.

This sparked something inside her to want to help others use running, and trail running in particular, to manage their mental health.

In July 2020 following the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, a rise sparked by the murder of runner Ahmaud Arbery amongst others, Sabrina co-found the fast growing community and campaigning group – Black Trail Runners. A trail running community for black people who want to experience trail running. Whether new to the discipline, or an experienced trail runner, this communities common goal is to provide a safe space for Black men and women who are looking to connect, get support from and be inspired via a community of Black men and women, and white allies, who are passionate about trail running and inclusivity for ALL.***

E2.13: The Runner’s Mind, Guest Coach Eric Wilden

"Running and meditation are different but...I think runners, in general, even if they don't know it, have a strong foundation in mindfulness. Even if you just think about the repetitive nature of your feet hitting the ground over and over again and you focus on that for whatever amount of time, that's mindfulness. That is developing the ability to focus on something without being distracted." ~ Coach Eric Wilden, Founder Dharma Running, Ambassador Still I Run *** Coach Eric Wilden has been running for almost 20 years, meditating for more than 30, and believes in the power of mindful running to help make the world a better place. He started his Dharma Running coaching practice several years ago in order to help runners build on the organic mindfulness that running can provide with Buddhist practices to cultivate wisdom, compassion, and a desire to engage in the world. Eric is a long distance runner and has completed 15 marathons, a few 50ks, and one 50-miler, as well as many shorter races. He lives just outside Philadelphia with his wife and two daughters.****

E2.10: Find Your Why, Guest Lindsley Hose

*** "It's not even so much about motivation any more, it's, like, what's your why?. What's your reason for lacing up your shoes and getting out there; and without races, I think a lot of people had to discover that why." ~Lindsley Hose, BibRave Ambassador, Mom, and Wife. *** Lindsley Hose  is a Denver based runner working as a licensed Oral Surgeons Assistant at a private practice. She has practiced in the field for almost 14 years now.

Running is Lindsley's favorite way of moving and staying healthy. She started running 6 years ago as apart of her weight loss journey. Having run track as a sprinter distance running was a whole new arena for Lindsley coming to the sport as an overweight adult. However, she immediately fell in love with distance running and  how amazing she felt after each run.  Lindsley's engagement in running has ebbed and flowed since first finding it 6 years ago but 2020 has been a year of truly falling in love with the sport of running, especially trail running. Lindsley says of her new found love: "This has been the year that I became unafraid to use my voice to empower runners and non runners of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities to get out there and do what you love." *** You can find Lindsley on Instagram @lindsley_kump (https://www.instagram.com/lindsley_kump/)***

" Anyone who has been running, even for just a few months, can attest to the fact that running  will reveal things to you about yourself..." Carolyn Su, Creator Diverse We Run, @diversewerun*** Carolyn Su is the creator of the Instagram platform, @DiverseWeRun, where she writes weekly features to amplify visual representation of BIPOC folks in the running space.
