Mama Say (Betty Who) with Zaina

Mama Say (Betty Who) with Zaina

You know you love a pretty girl, with a kitchen knife...

We are so excited to be joined by our good friend Zaina for this week's episode of "Whose Tangent Is It Anyway?" Tansy is taking the reins to pitch a tense, sexy (?) thriller based on Betty Who's "Mama Say", a song that Charles just straight up doesn't like. Expect twists, turns,  and multiple tangents based on a single actor's name.

We're taking our tenuous relationship with copyright law to a new level and pitching a whole Star Wars TV series based on Leonard Cohen's Happens to the Heart. Shit boys sure love the 1975, don't they?

In our first TikTok pitch, Charles is turning Lizzy McAlpine's earworm into a film about time travel, fatalism, bad relationships and the pain of loving a band that shit people also love! I don't think people read these descriptions so I'm putting minimal effort in!

Christmas Tree Farm (Taylor Swift)

Last Christmas, I gave you my farm....

In a truly loose, improvised episode, Tansy and Charles are riffing their way into creating a Christmas classic based on Taylor Swift's 2019 Christmas song and their mutual desire to fix the most Pitch Shift movie of 2019, Last Christmas.

After losing her Christmas loving husband Nick (Henry Golding)on Christmas day, Taylor (Emilia Clarke) retreats to his Christmas tree farm, which of course is haunted by Nick's ghost. But can you move on with life when your husband is still kinda there? And so is Oscar Isaac?

Six White Boomers

Six white boomers... and hell, any of them could have killed him....

Christmas is upon us, so we're getting into the Christmas spirit with some Christmas pitches! First up is Tansy's Aussie Christmas murder mystery, Six White Boomers. When Mr Howard is found dead at his annual Christmas party, it's up to Detectives Long and Short to find the killer, but with so many suspects and so many motives, how will they know which of these six white boomers did it?

Also the shocking truth that Charlie has never played Clue, a crash course in the last twelve years of Australian politics and a shuffle round pitch for Bonnie and Clyde starring Michael Bublé.

I'm Going Slightly Mad (Queen) & Baby's On Fire (Brian Eno)

Queen, Dogs, Witches and Climate Change!

It's another double bill as Charles takes on our first ever requests with two films of incredibly weird proportions. From a normal man dealing with the supreme strangeness of Jake Gyllenhaal doing *the most* to a coalition of witches taking down capitalism and climate change, there's something for everything in these film versions of Queen's "I'm Going Slightly Mad" and Brian Eno's "Baby's On Fire". Joker (Todd Phillips) & If I Killed Someone For You (Alec Benjamin)

Joker (Todd Phillips) & If I Killed Someone For You (Alec Benjamin)

I used to think life was a tragedy... but it turns out it's much worse.

Charles is going above and beyond to pitch a film that is not just an adaption of Alec Benjamin's twisty pop song "If I Killed Someone For You", but also a punch up of Joker (dir. Todd Phillips, 2019). Moderately successful comedian Richard (Bill Hader) decides to change up his career by trying murder, but when everyone mistakes his genuine attempts at homicide as a new bit, he rockets to comedy stardom (and murder ineptitude).

Plus the sick and twisted origin of this podcast, Tansy's disbelief at every single plot element of Joker, and our undying love of Demi Lardner.

Work Song & It Will Come Back (Hozier)

When my time comes around, yeet me gently in the cold dark earth.

We're big fans of Hozier here at Pitch Shift - such big fans, we're both pitching different Hozier songs as horror films! Go to the 1930s American south in Tansy's pitch for Work Song, where a sharecropper is haunted by her unkillable bank robbing ex, then journey to an alternate version of the present where cryptids roam the suburbs and just want love from Toni Collette in Charles' pitch for It Will Come Back.

Werewolves Of London (Warren Zevon)

Werewolves Of London (Warren Zevon)

Awoooooo, Point Break with Werewolves.

In a special Halloween episode, Tansy is pitching her take on Warren Zevon's infectiously funny Werewolves of London, which of course is just like The Departed, but with werewolves. Constable Rachel Warren thinks her life is over when she'd bitten on the job, but when she's reassigned to infiltrate the werewolf gangs, her real life begins.

Come for the werewolf cop, stay for Charles' shuffle round pitch for a Sweet Home Alabama movie where Sam Rockwell wants to kill Neil Diamond. And a lot of confusion about what actually *is* the original Sweet Home Alabama. It's a time.

Give Yourself A Try (The 1975)

Give Yourself A Try (The 1975)

A movie about Hollywood? Groundbreaking.

It's Tansy's turn to pitch this week, and she has poached Charles' favourite curly haired band boys and turned The 1975's Give Yourself A Try into a weird LA indie comedy drama about a child actor with no sense of identity and her writer friend who's one break away from success.

A writer? Writing about a writer? Groundbreaking.

There's also unsuccessful alcoholism, a lot of New Zealand cultural references, a dog named Tupac and an unexpected Bruce Springsteen cameo. What a fuckin rollercoaster. This pitch has too much plot.

Jack And Diane (John Cougar Mellencamp)

Lil ditty, bout a bunch of Gen Z kids in a haunted house...

This week, Tansy is taking on John Cougar Mellencamp's classic tale of two American kids growing up in the heartland - adding in five Gen Z kids from New York who leave the big city to squat in a definitely haunted house in Tennessee. It's a horror comedy featuring all the Pitch Shift favourites - ghosts, memes, sarcastic teens and Zendaya.

In 1962, two all American kids fell in love. In 2019, a nurse, her brother, a fake German popstar, a conspiracy theorist and a rich kid with good hair will learn their story.

Man! This pitch got out of hand.

What started as a humble attempt for Charles to make a film out of Shania Twain's trans anthem Man! I Feel Like A Woman has spiralled into a full blown Shania Twain Jukebox musical about the modern trans and queer experience. Travis is a little rough around the edges but he's doing his best in the face of gentrification, workplace discrimination and drag politics. It's a wild ride and we are on board.

Run Away With Me (Carly Rae Jepsen)

Run Away With Me (Carly Rae Jepsen)

Baby! Take Me! To The! London Blitz!

This week on Pitch Shift, Tansy is going as far from the source material as possible with her World War Two screwball comedy about a fake clairvoyant and a rich girl ghost who share a body and pull scams. Yes, this is based on the Carly Rae Jepsen song with the saxophone siren. It's... loose.

Rosalind Sharpe is a dodgy fake psychic taking advantage of the WW2 boom in dead people who gets more than she bargained for when she accidentally summons the selfish and recently deceased Ella Gold to share her body. Together, they fool most of London into believing Rosalind can contact dead soldiers, but Ella's unfinished business is closer to home than Rosalind thinks...

yes, it's another ghost movie. fight me.
