Pivoting to Equity, Diversity & Inclusion with Claire Sarafilovic

We are joined by Claire Sarafilovic, Regional Director at Faithful & Gould. She is also a crucial member of their ED&I (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion) team.

We talk about the societal pivot we are in and the work still to be done to create diverse workforces.

Claire is a pragmatic soul, and talks about measures within F&G which we hope will inspire more organisations to integrate ED&I fully into their cultures, hiring policies and objectives.

We learn:

  • Honouring ED&I ways of working is integral to a humans sense of belonging to a culture.
  • The key to unlocking ED&I is facing the challenging conversations

Claire's 'how to' guide to doing ED&I well! Ideas of what to introduce:

Jesse J Anderson: ADHD Super Hero

Jesse J Anderson: ADHD Super Hero

We kick Season 5 off with a celebration of ADHD. We wanted to understand more about this neurodiversity; with so many of our friends being diagnosed in their 30's and 40's, we were aware of what a life changing pivot this news can be.

We speak to Jesse J Anderson, an ADHD'er with a generous and informative story to tell about his experience of this pivot in his life. Diagnosed at the age of 36, he now shares his findings of the way his brain works with the world with his ever increasing TikTok, Insta and Twitter audiences. He is also writing a book with the ADHD community called 'Refocus'.

We learned:

1. 'Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder' is a highly paradoxical name:

  • your attention is actually on overload - you see and hear everything intensely. You are not decificent in attention!
  • hyperactivity is the myth of the naughty boy throwing chairs in the primary school. Actually ADHD'ers are prone to hyperFOCUS when they are interested in something.

2. Because of missed diagnosis ADHD'ers are prone to

  • addiction, due to a misfiring of their dopamine levels.
  • unemployment, because their interest levels are not sustain sufficiently.

3. Given the right tasks and opportunity ADHD'ers can be the most productive people on the planet.

We've never asked this so deliberately before but - PLEASE listen to this episode - you are VERY likely have close colleagues and friends who have ADHD, and it can be the super power they never knew they had. Spread the word. Celebrate neurodiversity. And marvel at Jesse's wonderful demeanour.

Noa Tishby: Pivoting to Peace in the Middle East

Noa Tishby: Pivoting to Peace in the Middle East

Noa Tishby is an Israeli actor (imdb), author, producer (of HBO's 'In Treatment') and activist. She joins us today to discuss her book ‘Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood Country on Earth’ which was released this year (2021) and really does what it says in the title.

With her sassy, no bullshit tone of voice she combines her personal history with the history of Israel. She expertly and factually navigates an unbiased account of where the state of Israel sits both historically and today. Balancing heart and head in equal measure. We learned soooo much from the book and from speaking with Noa. So many ‘aha’ moments it’s impossible to count. Whatever your political leaning, as long as you're into equality and peace, this book and interview are for you.

Love After Death: Louise Blyth (Part II)

Love After Death: Louise Blyth (Part II)

We meet Louise Blyth, author of 'Hope is Coming', for the second time. (Catch her first episode with us here: Life After Death)

After losing her husband to bowel cancer at the age of 33, she and her 2 young boys set about understanding what life might be like without George. Louise is a shining example of how to live with grief. How it folds into your life and is able to enjoy a fulfilling and enlightened path forward.

We learn:

  • The difference between grief and mourning
  • Time is irrelevant in the grief process. Shed the need to be 'normal'. There are societal BS 'norms' that need to be addressed.
  • Falling in love again - the fear, the mindset, the safeguarding.
  • Dealing with 'the impostor': What am I feeding my soul? What did I just read? What narrative did I just digest?!

A second book is on its way so watch this space and we'll let you know when it's out!

Bruce Daisley: Laughing His Way To The Top

Bruce Daisley: Laughing His Way To The Top

Bruce Daisley will quite frankly knock your socks off. A powerhouse of energy, the ex-Vice President of Twitter Europe and author of the The No.1 Sunday Times Business Bestseller 'The Joy of Work - 30 Ways to Fix Your Work Culture and Fall in Love with Your Job Again' (or 'Eat Sleep Work Repeat' - in the US. Also host of the podcast of the same name)  joins us for a Pivot Points to remember.

His energy will power you through a conversation that actually doesn't reeeeally cover many pivot points per se - but boy, oh boy it's a romp through his marvellous mind!

We cover A LOT:

  • He debunks some notable social science experiments.
  • We discover shared experience, control, identity, community are the foundation of resilience. And that resilience is a team effort – not an individual trait.
  • He advocates that finding the opportunities for laughter and humour in our work lives, is where true happiness lives.... and we only laugh when we feel safe.
  • The idea of a traditional career is antiquated.
  • Leadership is about projected identity – how important it is to see our identity in our leaders to ensure collective community.
  • And as ex-head of Twitter – he’s a fan of policing the social medias MORE.

Emma Campbell (aka @limitless_em): Unbreakable

Emma Campbell (aka @limitless_em): Unbreakable

Joined by Emma Campbell (@limitless_em),  an author, columnist, speaker, long term cancer thriver and mother of four (3 of whom are triplets!)

Emma’s story is of survival (literally life and death), and astounding resilience - when life deals you an ace and a joker in the same hand... repeatedly.

The pivots we journey through are ones which come under the category of “life imploding”, but this is really a story of finding joyful perspectives in unexpected places

She tells us of consciously practicing gratitude and being mindful that the thoughts and words we use in every day life have an impact on our reality, so it’s important the stories and narratives we tell ourselves are compassionate and nurturing.

Where to find Em:

Insta -  @limitless_em – a handle she adopted following her third cancer diagnosis in 2019 to serve as a daily reminder that we are all ‘limitless’ and capable of so much more than we often realise.

Her memoir, ‘All That Followed – A Story Of Cancer, Kids And The Fear Of Leaving Too Soon’ was published in August 2018 and charts the story from the birth of her triplets, to dealing with breast cancer as a single mum of four, and how the anxiety and fear of recurrence impacted so heavily on her life until she began to find a way to look at my circumstances through a different lens.

She writes a regular column for Women’s Running Magazine

Dave Wilson: From Solitude to Sobriety

Dave Wilson: From Solitude to Sobriety

We’re kicking off 2021 and Season 3 of Pivot Points, with Dave Wilson aka @soberdave.

In January 2019 Dave made the decision to go sober after 40 years of excessive drinking.

He charted his new found sobriety on instagram, and quickly found himself part of the most incredible online support community.

This conversation covers so much ground, from sobriety, the impact of alcoholism, cancer, love, abandonment, taking on someone else's children, to being a geezer in Wandsworth amongst all the 'yummy mummy's'!

We learn:

  • That connection is the opposite of addiction
  • Alcohol is like an abusive relationship
  • How to look at consequences. Wind it forward - past the first 30 mins of drinking onto what happens next
  • To look at alcohol like an allergy - you don’t just “get over it”.

Season 2 Finale. David Pearl Presents: The Boardroom Street Opera

Season 2 Finale. David Pearl Presents: The Boardroom Street Opera

How to introduce David?! His life is a series of pivots each as interesting as the last. David Pearl has done so much it would be criminal to box him into a ‘role’.... But we’ll try! He is a Broadcaster, Opera Singer, Business Innovator, Serenade-r, Philosopher, Author, Speaker and that’s all we get to in this episode! Suffice to say, whatever he turns his hand to he inspires creativity - be it in business, art or social change.

This story unfolds in as unique a format as the guest himself - so today we work backwards! From Street Wisdom, to disrupting the way we meet, to the Royal Opera house at 9 years old, to a near death experience.

We learn:

  • You can shape what comes next
  • ‘If things can go bad really quickly – they can go good really quickly’
  • Change is possible... and can be done through naughtiness!

We both adored this episode and feel it is the perfect way to wrap up Season 2.

Read his incredible books: 'Will There Be Donuts', 'Story for Leaders'  - must reads for anyone who works within a corporate environment

Alex Bellos: The Nomadic Mathematician

Alex Bellos: The Nomadic Mathematician

Today we’re joined by Sunday Times Best Selling author and Guardian columnist Alex Bellos (who we met through the wonderful Tulip Siddiq MP!)

Applying a mathematical way of looking at the world. Structures and quality questions exist in all forms. Alex applied this logic to the creative endeavour of writing for the Guardian as a journalist and eventually into authoring his books (see below for links). His pivots take us from journalism in the 90's, to Brazil, to bringing maths to the masses.

Through storytelling, he demystifies maths and dare we say, even makes it interesting.. And if we’re saying that, it’s quite an achievement.

Charla Grant: To All The Parents with Broken Hearts & Empty Arms

Charla Grant: To All The Parents with Broken Hearts & Empty Arms

This episode is dedicated to Olive Grant, and all the parents with broken hearts and empty arms

This week, we're joined by Charla Grant, the Founder of The Grateful Hearts Club.

Charla joins us today to talk about her journey to becoming a mother which involved, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, heart break and the death her daughter Olive. Charla is so generous in sharing her hurt and her grief. And shows us that even in the midst of the very darkest times gratitude is still available.

This isn't the story of fertility struggle we normally hear, ending with a 'happily ever after'; it's real, raw and incredibly empowering.

If you’re in any way sceptical about the practice of gratitude - be prepared to change your mind!

A warning - this episode deals with miscarriage and still birth. If you need support around anything you hear, please contact the charity Tommys www.tommys.org

G (Gamal Turawa): Black Pride

G (Gamal Turawa): Black Pride

It's Black History Month and we celebrate it with a corker! We meet the effervescent Gamal Turawa, or ‘G’ as he prefers to be called.

G is a black man, born to Nigerian and Jamaican parents. He grew up in foster care in the UK with a white family. His abusive  birth father took him back at the age of 15, only to send him back to Nigeria to be without money, work or the language; where he ended up homeless.

G made his way back to the UK and eventually enrolled as a police officer in the Met. He talks to us today about his experience of coming out at the age of 40 in 2004, making him the first black, openly gay police officer in the UK.

G is now a diversity facilitator and international speaker who’s currently writing his highly anticipated autobiography and is soon to release a documentary on his life.

We laughed and learned a huge amount from G. He’s fascinating, hilarious and incredibly resilient. You’re in for a great episode here and we hope you enjoy it!

Claire Birkenshaw: A Trans Life; Transgender, Transition, and forever Translating...

Claire Birkenshaw: A Trans Life; Transgender, Transition, and forever Translating...

In this episode we’re joined by Claire Birkenshaw, a lecturer at Leeds Beckett University. In 2016 as a Principle at a secondary school in Hull, Claire transitioned to female at the age of 45, making her the first headteacher to transition whilst in post. Her story is one of immense pain and intense hope.

She speaks to us about her journey and the work she now does to shed light, open doors and educate in sexual diversity and acceptance.

This episode opened our eyes to the deep and complex emotions that accompany being trans. It’s moving, raw, honest and incredibly informative. Amelia said of all the episodes we’ve recorded, this one broke her heart open and when you listen to it, you’ll know why. She is a deeeep thinker, a master metaphor-ist (!) and a gorgeous human being. The students of Leeds Beckett Uni are so freakin lucky to have such a powerful woman in their faculty.

Claire references and resources:

  • Goffman – Front stage/back stage. Accepted or Hostile. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erving_Goffman
  • Claire recommends watching ‘First Day’ on BBC iPlayer - about a trans girl starting at a new secondary school. Claire is currently writing a paper on it.

Pivot Points recommendation - have you seen:

  • 'Disclosure' on Netflix - a SUPERB documentary created and starring all trans cast.
  • 'Pose' on Netflix and BBC - a series based in the heartbreaking 80's, where the New York trans community love, live, dance and die.
  • See Claire in action on stage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXPn5dzwQc0

MP Tulip Siddiq: Pivot Points does Politics

MP Tulip Siddiq: Pivot Points does Politics

Today’s guest is MP, Tulip Siddiq - that’s right, we’ve gone political!

Charismatic, sharp and charming, Tulip talks to us about:

  • The pivots the Labour party have gone through over the last few years
  • Antisemitism within the Labour party
  • How she resigned her hard won front bench seat in protest of triggering Article 50

Why people told her she should stand for Bradford, rather than Hampstead and Kilburn (North London)

Ciara Charteris: Friend then Foe; Acquaintance Rape

Ciara Charteris: Friend then Foe; Acquaintance Rape

Today’s guest is 'Poldark' Actor, Ciara Charteris. She has very recently gone public with her experience of being raped, by a good friend of hers, 5 years ago. This is known as Acquaintance Rape.

Ciara is an ex-actress, most notably on shows such as the BBC’s Poldark, After almost 10 years of acting Ciara moved into the business side of the industry, Ciara’s Rape and the recent betrayal and trauma surrounding it, changed her life irrevocably.

Ciara now works as an ambassador for the incredible community 'I am Arla', fighting for women’s justice and using her story to help others. She has just accepted a place to study a Masters in The Psychology & Neuroscience of Mental Health

As we speak several daily newspapers are reporting her story- using her 'I am Arla' article (below).

She talks, for the first time, about the night in question and the rape. She speaks eloquently,  making the complex extremely simple. She challenges the rape myths the media and governmental agencies will have us believe i.e that rape is highly nuanced and complex; especially when the victim knows the rapist (known as acquaintance rape’, which makes up 90% of all rape cases).

Sarah Castro MBE: The Black Jewish Experience

Sarah Castro MBE: The Black Jewish Experience

Sarah Castro MBE has over 20 years’ experience working with charities, local authorities and in social housing. Sarah has worked in some of London’s most disadvantaged communities and is currently an Independent Adviser to the Metropolitan Police during critical incidents, and acts as an independent observer on high-level operations. She also works with the Trident Gangs Unit on their community engagement strategy.

This episode is a unique opportunity to hear someone, incredibly knowledgeable and eloquent, discuss what it is like to be a black Jew today and what happens when these two worlds, which are so often perceived to be like oil and water, come together.

With headlines telling us that antisemitism is rife and our eyes being opened to the blatant and systemic racism all around us, this episode explores these issues from the inside and is not one to be missed.

In this episode, Sarah talks to us about:

  • The Black Lives Matter movement and how this is a “no go back moment” in time
  • Wiley’s recent anti-semetic commentary
  • How the Jewish and Black communities have more in common than sets them apart

We cover generational trauma, non violent communication, how Jews became white, her work with drug wrecked communities and the power these communities have in the fight for their own standards of living

So we cover a lot!

You will fall off your chair with the blast of energy.

Please do write in with your questions to pivotpointspod@gmail.com and we will get Sarah back on to answer these

  • How we should view failure

Quote gems:

  • ‘What’s most personal is most general’
  • ‘Failure and success are not seen as synonymous’
  • ‘The Arrival Fallacy’ - a game changer concept.

Jess Rad: Miscarriage & Menopause

Jess Rad: Miscarriage & Menopause

Jess Rad is the founder of ‘The WomenHood’, which connects women on the issues that matter to help them navigate womanhood. Her mission is to empower women with the knowledge, mindset and toolkit to make positive changes in their lives.

This episode really opened our eyes to the unspoken aspects of womanhood: miscarriage and premature menopause. How have we gone this long? It’s like a weird Fight Club mentality - you can’t talk about the trauma - you just have to be with it and allow it to beat you up. Well, NO MORE says Jess Rad!

She has bravely opened up the conversation through her own experiences. She asks to be heard and not told how to feel. And lets us know how to speak to people who have gone through similar life events.

The episode is also informative from a medical perspective. She bust myths around HRT, what the 34 (yes, 34) side effects of menopause are (spoiler, not just hot flashes!), that 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, they are painful, traumatic and, invariably, unsupported by medical staff.

This episode is a heavy subject with a lightness of touch that makes it accessible and human.

Jason Goldberg: Redesigning Your Life

Jason Goldberg: Redesigning Your Life

We’re joined by Jason Goldberg; entrepreneur, author of best selling book 'Prison Break', TEDx speaker and a rapper, who once opened for the Woo Tang Clan (yes, true). Jason is gifted with wisdom and intellect, which he relays with an entertaining lightness that makes this episode unmissable.

Listen to this episode if you:

  • Want to understand a new way to relate to negative emotions
  • Need a lesson in self trust
  • Are ready to make changes that stick

Soooooo many ‘mic drop’ moments. Gabi and Amelia were clearly in awe / getting their heads round some mind bending concepts / falling a little bit in love.

Jason has pivoted in more ways than one, which has brought him some awe inspiring insights and teachings that he shares with us. Physically losing over 9 stone in weight, getting a divorce after 10 years of marriage, leaving behind an extremely successful career to take the leap into entrepreneurship and, moving across the country to start a new life. The power in Jason’s pivots comes from the fact he has been able to study them with such conscious objectivity. They have formed the foundation of his work today which is insightful, accessible and life changing.

This episode is filled with humour, warmth, humanness and wisdom that will leave you thinking, re-thinking and questioning.

He has been generous enough to provide our listeners with a free copy of his book 'Prison Break', which you can download via this link:

Hollie Holden: Mother, Midwife, Poet, Philosopher, Teacher, Noticer

Hollie Holden: Mother, Midwife, Poet, Philosopher, Teacher, Noticer

This week we’re joined by the effervescent Hollie Holden. If you haven’t fallen in love with her by the end of this episode, we’ll give you your money back!

This episode is for you, if you struggle with perfectionism, or you struggle with finding the silver lining during the hard times, or you find change crippling.

Even as big pivot fans ourselves; she mirrored back to us how important it is to reflect upon our pivot points - learn to love them (however hard they were/are) and move through them.

She talks about pivots as a gateway. And that in order for something to be born something else must die, meaning pivots must have a moment of mourning and celebration. We need to stay soft at these times, to let the new in.

She speaks of herself as a midwife - helping new ideas and change into the world - with support and love.

She speaks of motherhood - ‘allowing another human to unfold’. There is no point wishing a ‘tulip bulb will grow to be a rose’.

She asks beautiful, insightful questions such as: How can we be loved into our next pivot?, How do I work with what I’ve been given?, What’s the gift here?, What’s the invitation’
