Empowering Kids Through Vegan Stories: A Chat with Author Tina Newman || PLANT CEO #92

Empowering Kids Through Vegan Stories: A Chat with Author Tina Newman || PLANT CEO #92

In this episode, we chat with Tina Newman, Author of Vivi the Supervegan. Her own children inspired her to create the characters in her series of books. The books aim to empower children to be "superheroes" by living compassionately, not exploiting animals for food, and to be more sustainable. Tina discusses the challenges her vegan daughters face at their non-vegan school, like wearing stickers identifying their vegan meals. She hopes her books can counter the normalisation of animal exploitation prevalent in schools, media, and society. While some parents who buy the books are vegan or vegetarian, others are buying it for gifts for vegans. Tina aims to handle things delicately and plant "seeds" about animal rights in a child-friendly way through her writing. She recounts an interaction at her book launch with a slaughterhouse worker who initially disagreed with some points but found the book powerful and thought-provoking, especially seeing his wife's emotional reaction. However, Tina hopes it will plant a seed in him so that he can eventually question the animal industry he works in. Overall, Tina wants to provide a compassionate alternative viewpoint to the typical children's literature and media portraying animal use as normal and unquestioned. https://www.vivithesupervegan.co.uk/ Video that inspired Tina to go vegan "This Speech Is Your WAKE UP CALL!" Creating a Tempeh Category: Better Nature || PLANT CEO #90

Creating a Tempeh Category: Better Nature || PLANT CEO #90

In this episode, we dive into the world of plant-based proteins with the co-founders of Better Nature Tempeh - Christopher Kong (CEO) and Elin Roberts (CMO). This dynamic team is on a mission to create a new protein category by introducing tempeh, a traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans, to the Western market. High in protein and with a firm, dense texture, tempeh offers a unique and nutritious alternative to meat. The journey began when Elin introduced Chris to the benefits of a vegan lifestyle during their university days. Chris then met Dr Driando Ahnan (CTO), an Indonesian food scientist. Inspired by Driando's expertise and passion for his homeland's culinary tradition, they teamed up with Fabio Rinaldo (COO), a nutritionist who had fallen in love with tempeh while travelling in Indonesia. Better Nature Tempeh now offers a range of organic and pre-marinated tempeh products, with major listings in supermarket chains across the UK and Germany. The founders share their insights on building a successful plant-based company, from navigating the challenges to achieving their B-Corp certification and donating 1% of revenue to a charitable cause in Indonesia. If you're looking to create your own plant-based venture or simply want to learn more about this fascinating protein alternative, this episode is a must-listen. Addressing AI's blind spots: Speciesism bias || PLANT CEO #89

Addressing AI's blind spots: Speciesism bias || PLANT CEO #89

In this important episode, we interview Sam Tucker, Executive Director at Open Paws, an open-source non-profit AI organization. Sam explains how current AI systems exhibit bias towards factory farming and discrimination against non-human species, effectively promoting "speciesism". To counter this, Open Paws collaborates with the AI industry to remove such bias and works with animal welfare groups to ethically analyse their data to operate at a foundational level regarding AI training.

Sam has extensive experience in this area with his previous for-profit venture VEG3, a SaaS tool for vegans and vegan businesses. By using their dedicated vegan AI, offering 24/7 access to unlimited personalized responses and 50,000+ vegan resources. Vegans get asked the same questions "where do you get your protein from" so to avoid burnout this tool would be a great companion that doesn't also get emotional when the same questions keep coming up.

We discuss the future of AI and the organisations developing AI that can help interpret animal communication and promote interspecies understanding. Overall, this is an eye-opening look at reducing AI bias against non-human animals and using technology to advance animal welfare.

Sam provides thoughtful perspectives on challenges in this emerging field and presents Open Paws' approach of open, ethical AI development. Any AI ethics or animal rights follower will find great value in this interview.

Conversation with Director: You Are What You Eat - A Twin Experiment || PLANT CEO #87

In this insightful episode, we sit down with Louis Psihoyos, the documentary filmmaker behind projects like "The Game Changers," returning to discuss his latest hit Netflix documentary series "You Are What You Eat." The film follows an experiment with 21 sets of identical twins, where one twin from each pair adopts a whole food, plant-based diet and the other sticks to a standard healthy omnivore diet for 8 weeks. The published results showed stunning improvements among the plant-based twins across areas like weight, visceral fat, blood pressure, telomeres length, and inflammatory biomarkers. Key outcomes highlighted in the discussion include the plant-based twins having longer telomeres reflecting cellular regeneration and reduced visceral fat even with the same exercise levels. All twins reportedly improved their diets after seeing the data. The episode covered why Psihoyos pursued this twin experiment to dig into the genetics vs lifestyle debate on nutrition needs. He attributes the film's viral popularity to public and medical community interest in plant-based eating. The results were shocking even to the research team - with the quick health improvements among plant-based twins exceeding expectations. Psihoyos sees the findings as firmly establishing the health and longevity benefits of plant-based eating for all populations. If you are also interested in filmmaking for the betterment of our planet, then look out for his tips and hear about one of his new projects.

PLANT CEO #54 - EXCLUSIVE: Louie Psihoyos - Award winning documentary filmmaker

PLANT CEO #54 - EXCLUSIVE: Louie Psihoyos - Award winning documentary filmmaker

In this EXCLUSIVE PLANT CEO special we speak with Louie Psihoyos, Executive Director of Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS). Louie has been creating highly moving documentaries for over 10 years now. With the thread of the films being that we are already going through the 6th mass extinction on the earth as result of human interference. This led him to his first film 'The Cove' which won an Academy Award for Best documentary feature, that exposed dolphin hunting. The second film 'Racing Extinction' recently won the Best Green Film of the Decade, which explored species extinction and exposed the shark finning trade.  We also focus on the world of Super Athletes like Lewis Hamilton who have turned to eating plant-based in 'The Game Changers'. During the first month of release on Netflix, searches for “plant-based diet” rose by 350% globally. So all his films have resulted in becoming social movements of change for the better. We also discuss the automotive industry's journey to electrification; especially with Elon Musk and TESLA that resulted in him commissioning a build of a real life James Bond car that even 'Q' would be happy with. It was also amazing to know a little more about all his upcoming projects too.
