There's a lot covered in this short episode but I start off giving some quick updates on the garden & a test I plan on running with my irrigation system vs hand-watering plants 💦🌱🌿 Outside of the garden I talk about some of the anxiety involved with posting on social media and how it's about your mindset and your own personal happiness & goals, not the platform itself. It's easy to get caught up in thought of "what should I post" but just know it's as simple as being yourself. When you realize what you're posting is for YOU, to display your Passions or thoughts, and is not for anyone else to judge, then you'll post freely 🙏🙌
We had perfect weather this weekend to finish up some garden projects that I've been dragging out for far too long. The biggest one - completing the drip irrigation system. This allows us to provide targeted watering & fertilization to each Root Pouch - either with a gentle sprinkler-type of flow, or a slow drip. This is important because the water stays in the pots rather than running off into the ground, the plants are able to utilize more of the resources at the slow drip rate vs being overwhelmed by water from a watering wand 💪🌱 and we're able to inject fertilizers & microbial treatments straight into the irrigation system thanks to a simple fertilizer injector system called the Chapin Hydrofeed 💩🦠💦 In this episode I talk more about the benefits of this system, plans for the fall garden, & a Plant Lab update on growing Microgreens 🌱🌱🌱
We're inching closer to finishing up our irrigation system, but it keeps raining every single time I work on it! In this episode I dive into why I'm installing an irrigation system - to provide consistent and highly targetted nutrient and water levels and remove the complete reliance on Mother Nature. I also discuss the benefits of rain water, how pH helps with nutrient uptake, and planning for our Fall Garden. And even though the garden is bursting with growth, we're starting microgreens indoors again to jumpstart our CropBox offering and provide the most value we can for the remainder of the growing season. That leads into another big topic of Asking for the Sale and realizing you're bringing value, not being unrealistic or salesy. Really loving being back into the podcast flow! Let me know what other topics you want to hear some more about and I'll plug them into future podcasts!
I've been pretty quiet for the past few weeks and I'm about to explode, so I had to spill some thoughts on the podcast this morning. We start off discussing why I've been quiet, what I've been up to in the garden of Life and some of the goals & aspirations that are running through my mind about gardening and how I envision my business evolving and blooming into something that can eventually stand on its own 🙏
This summer has been a wild one so far. From buckets of rain to 100 degree days, you just never know what to expect 🤷♂️ In this episode I briefly talk about the impacts of weather on the garden, but then I talk about why I've been absent from podcasting for so long and how the passing of my Mam-maw has affected my perspective on life - in a good way. When someone lives a full life & leaves an amazing legacy you can't be depressed, you have to carry the torch to keep the flame alive 🗽
Vacation has almost become a bad word in our hardworking society, but it is completely normal and necessary to continue to be productive, allow yourself to recharge, and generally to keep your sanity. In this episode I talk about why it's important to disconnect from work for short stints and force yourself to explore passions outside of work - go for a hike, paint a picture, get lost in the moment and forget about time for a while. To end the episode, I got on a little bit of a rant on how Facebook & Snapchat will use VR (virtual reality) to improve communications in our digital world, and how I think it will help eliminate bias and discrimination. Would love to hear your thoughts on the episode!
Yesterday I sat down with Jeff Mastin, Biologist for Venntis Technologies who is the maker of the TotalGrow LED Grow lights. In this episode we do a deep dive into the ever-evolving technology of LEDs, the biology & science of LED lighting for a wide range horticultural applications, and discuss where we see the industry going over the next 5-10 years. A lot of people think of cannabis, or growing in a basement or closet, when they hear talk about Grow Lights, but the fact of the matter is that almost ever grower can use them - it all depends on the crops you're growing and the goals you want to accomplish. If you're interested in learning more about TotalGrow LED Lights, drop me a comment or send me a message and I'll be happy to help! Or head over to AM Leonard's website to check out the options (and stay tuned for new products that will be dropping soon)!
Allergies & bad time management have kept me from podcasting recently, but I'm back for another rant about Organic Gardening & ideas I have to expand my brand & business, Gardening 4 Gains 💪🌱 As far as organic gardening goes, I talk in-depth about a few fertilizer products from The Anderson's that I'm super pumped about. The first is an organic fertilizer called Innova. It's an OMRI listed fertilizer made from soybean meal - and the plants already feeding on it love it! I also talk about a Humic acid product called Humic DG - really popular for lawn applications, but also huge for organic farmers! 👨🌾🚜 I end the podcast talking about some thoughts I have for expanding my brand & product offering, centered around my passions of Gardening & Gains - what would you like us to carry? Is there any health/fitness/organic product you're looking for but can't find? 🤔 Would love to hear your thoughts on the podcast & what you're doing to Garden for Gains! 💪🌱
The title is pretty self-explanatory but today I talk about organic vs synthetic fertilizers and how I want to study more to learn the truth about their effects rather than jump on an emotional bandwagon or simply assume something is "bad" because it isn't organic. I tried to keep that rant short but I believe it's important to challenge controversy head-on - or else you'll never know the truth. We also discuss soil health, my plans to attempt to expand the garden (again), and discuss future guests I'll be having on the show. Let me know if you have any gardening questions & I'll be happy to answer them in a future podcast 😁🎙️
The garden is growing along strong and now the only thing we need to do is protect it from pests & provide it will water & nutrition 🍼🌱 In this episode I talk about how I'm going to protect my broccoli from bugs, how to keep pest pressures down in your garden, and our game plan for the rest of the summer to ensure we're steady filling those CropBoxes!
In this episode I talk about the importance of living in the moment and how that will make you the happiest version of yourself while dwelling on the past or worrying about the future will put you in a place of depression or anxiety. On a lighter note, I also discuss the garden renovations that Kyla and I made to the garden over the weekend including: adding a new garden gate, installing a new fence, and overall improving the general aesthetic of the Garden of Gains 💪🌱
In this episode I talked about upgrading the garden gate, fence, and overall aesthetic of the Garden of Gains. Yesterday me and Kyla worked hard to drive in fence posts, then put up the new fence - and we also found a new gate at Menards instead of the hillbilly gate that we've been using that I made out of bamboo and crappy wood 😂😂 Other than our big weekend projects I also discuss the ability to grow year-round, why growing in soil is important for flavor, and talk about the terroir of fruits & veggies 🍷
Yesterday's podcast was about the basics of gardening and this episode dives in deeper on how to grow the most popular garden veggie (or fruit) - the mighty Tomato 💪🍅 I discuss some important aspects about how tomatoes grow (Determinate or indeterminate), how to stake or support them, tips for pest control, and easy to implement fertilizer tips to keep your plants producing heavy! Let me know if you have any other gardening questions and I'll be happy to help 🤗
We're going back to the basics on this episode for beginning gardeners and hitting on the bare essentials of the requirements for Sun, Soil, and other foundational knowledge to help you grow an amazing garden 🌱🤗🌱 If you have any other questions you want answered for your garden, let me know and I'll get it on an upcoming episode!
In this episode I talk about the storms that have been slamming Ohio non-stop this year, including a tornado in Dayton a couple nights ago. We have been lucky through it all, and really just benefiting from all the rain that's been feeding the garden 🌱💧 I also talk about the importance of talking vacation time and why we need to disconnect from work and recharge ourselves. I think it's also important to separate from work so we realize it is a part of our lives, but not your complete identity in life. It's important, but there's so much more to life - work hard but live harder!
I got a little deep & philosophical in this episode 🧠🛋️ talking about the meaning of life - or how to find meaning in life, no matter what you're doing. A lot of this depends on what your passion is; how to find it. I think this all comes from actions, not learning, not reading - the only way you can know is by trying, failing, and persevering. After the philosophical rant I talk about plans for the garden and natural pest control options such as beneficial insects and organic pesticides 🐌🐛🐞
This episode dives into some facts, feelings, and opinions on controversial topics that are top of mind for so many - RoundUp, genetically modified foods/crops, organic growing methods, and my thoughts on the hysteria surrounding those topics. This isn't all serious & controversial though 😂 just some logical thoughts to get people thinking, and take the emotional component out of decision-making. I also talk about plans for the garden which include planting out some new plant varieties from Burpee 🤗 for those who don't know, I was selected as a 2019 Gardener of the Year by Burpee and will be featured during the month of October. In the meantime, I can't wait to plant the new varieties & taste the Purple peppers and the sweet habaneros in the coming months 🤤
Whether you "believe" in climate change or not, I think we can all agree that we've seen storms increase in strength & duration. It seems like any time it rains, the new normal is for it to dump a couple inches of rain. The weather has essentially become like the world - extremely polarized; all the way left or all the way right.. or is it just our perception because of this political climate (weather pun intended). So aside from that rant 😂 here's my take on why I switched from growing in the ground to gardening in Root Pouches 🌱🦘
In yesterday's podcast I bragged about how my broccoli hasn't been attacked by bugs yet, went home and had holes in leaves, so that means it's time to spray! Though I hate spraying pesticides, it's completely necessary if you want to harvest what you planted - plus it's an organic, natural product - not harsh chemicals 🧪 Other than organic pesticides, I talk about other natural ways to control pests such as companion planting & trap crops
Today's the day - it's our last frost day in Ohio 🥳🥳🥳 Even though we haven't seen a frost or freeze in over a month, it's still best to wait rather than gamble with the life of your precious plants 🎰 Other than talking about the last frost, I also talk about transplanting tomatoes & peppers and about my plans for the hundreds of peppers I'm growing. To wrap things up, I talk about irrigation in the garden and why rainwater is so great for your plants 🌧️🌱🌿 what are you planting in your garden this year? Let me know if you have any questions about growing & I'll throw it in a future podcast!
Growing Tomatoes from seed is always a challenge - which is what makes it fun! Seems like you always start too early or too late. This year I was too early and my tomatoes plants were struggling in the plug trays because they were becoming root-bound. I didn't think they'd survive but Kyla told me to plant them up into a bigger pot so they could stretch their legs. Luckily, I had CowPots on deck and I'm super impressed with how my plants have bounced back and began to thrive 🤗 In this episode I talk about what CowPots are, why they're the best pot you don't know about, and how they saved my tomato seedlings - and ultimately, my garden.
Every plant I grow is grown using organic growing methods - and the same goes for my business. In this episode I talk about updates to the CropBox, my plans for the National Hardware Show, and dive into my plans to grow my business - organically, slow & steady and only as I'm ready! And that begs the question - what other products do you want me to offer other than fresh veggies & herbs? Would love to hear your thoughts 😁
With all this rain and the temperatures rising, that means weeds are on their way to a garden or lawn near you 👉🌿 In this episode I dive into organic options for weed control and discuss the benefits of using ground cover or landscape fabric, coco weed guards, and Parboiled rice hulls. How do you control weeds in your garden or yard? 🤔
Hard to believe it's already May 1st, but the garden has been growing amazingly 🌱🌱🌱🤗 We are about a month ahead of last year and our customers can expect a CropBox in their near future 🔮 In this episode I dive into the benefits and challenges of growing in Root Pouches, discuss how we plan to keep a steady supply of veggies coming down the pipe, and I talk about my big, overarching goals for the Garden of Gains 🌱💪
We were super productive this weekend and finally built Kyla's raised bed for growing herbs 🌱🌿 In this episode I walk through how to build raised beds, what we planted in that bed, and plans for future growth. Being sick last week also made me really reflective and realize the gaps I need to fill with my content - not just the podcast, but video and blogging as well. Yet it isn't all about production, it's about sharing your passion with the world - and more importantly, it's about living in the moment and enjoying your passion; enjoying your life 😁🥳
In this episode I met up with Mandy Groszko, creator of Ella Bella Gluten Free to talk about her business, learn her story, and explain why I'm offering baking mixes in the CropBox this year. We got into a ton of topics ranging from the original of your foods/ingredients, the struggles and triumphs of entrepreneurship, and so much more! If you're interested in learning more, check out the baking mixes on my website www.gardening4gains.com and give Mandy a follow @ellebellagf on all platforms 👌
In this episode I go on a quick rant about how I'm grateful for the immense amount of documenting I have been doing and how it gives you perspective of your life, the changes that happen, and most importantly you can capture those joyful moments in time. I love how my videos and content aren't solely about the gardrn, but are beginning to weave in some portions of my life.. and it'll only get better as we learn to vlog better and document our journey of life
In this episode I talk about what I'm planting early in the season. Part of the early planting is the amazing weather we're having in Ohio, but also because I'm more confident to take a risk because of the experience and knowledge I've built over the years. I also talk about the drip irrigation system that we got setup over the weekend and how it'll be such a game changer - saving water, time, money, and ultimately producing healthier plants. This will also be assisted by the Chapin Hydrofeed fertigation system that will be setup with the drip line. So pumped to get this garden on the gains train 💪🌱
In this episode I dive into the challenges I've had with seed starting this year and what I would do differently in the future. I also talk about the different styles of plug trays I'm testing out, fertilizers I'm using for seedlings, and plans for the CSA this year. Let me know what other gardening questions you need answered and I'm happy to help 🤗
Lately I've been obsessed with Time - how do I make the most of the time I'm given? What can I do to find more time? I think there's a ton of time we can steal back from time suckers like complaining, debating taking action, and doing busy work. I think it's also important to realize that it's not simply about the quantity of time - QUALITY is the ultimate benchmark ⏳🏋️♂️⌛
My garden has mostly been functional but this year I'm focusing on creativity and aesthetics - in the garden & online. In this episode I start talking about creativity, art, and some updates on my seedlings growing vertically in the grow rack I have set up with LED grow lights. Towards the second half I start talking about being real and how thats the most important thing, not followers, likes, or vanity metrics. The beautiful thing about social media is that it allows you to connect with people on a deeper level - it isn't the amount of followers you have, but the quality of the relationships you cultivate and the positive impact you can have by simply being yourself and sharing your truths with the world 🙏
So it looks like my last few podcasts have been cut short due to a bug with Anchor (I'm guessing because it was only when I recorded within the app), but here's a full-length podcast talking about the issue and what I began talking about in the past 2 podcasts. After talking about that and the garden, I start diving into more motivational/psychological thoughts - and thats what I love about the morning podcasts - I'm so amped for the day and want to spread that energy to everyone I can! ⚡
Some people are constantly selling, everything is "buy this" "read this" "do this thing for me" - and on the other end of the spectrum, some people can never ask for the sale. I fall into the "not being able to ask" category, but I think I have been slowly getting better. Thanks to my brother Adam for giving me a reality check and helping me to believe in myself and my business - and hopefully this will help expand my product offering and grow my business exponentially 📈
In this episode we dive into seed starting and weekend garden projects of transplanting kale & baby choi then covering with a frost blanket. I also talk about the veggie box subscriptions (CropBox), how last year was underwhelming and how I'm pivoting this year to set my business up for success. Being an entrepreneur is all about adapting to challenges and overcoming them - and thats just what we're gonna do!
In our 4th weekly podcast, Tori & I dive into our top 5 favorite products for Growing Leafy Greens 🍃 and our top 5 products for Pest Control 🐝🐞 We dive into a ton of different products ranging from hand tools, organic OMRI listed products, and biological pest control as well - Essentially this is a complete grower guide for organic vegetable gardening and growing 🌰🌱 Call into the station with any questions and we'll be happy to help! And if you're a grower - we would love to hear your stories!
PSA - now is the time to start your seeds! If you're in zone 5-7 you want to get your seeds started for the 2019 growing season. In this episode I talk about seeds I've started, where I'm growing them, and how to set yourself up for success with LED grow lights 💡🌱
Welcome back to another episode featuring Tori Bruns - fellow Merchandiser at AM Leonard & grower at Mustard Seed Farm Market. In this episode we dig into Soil, Soilless media, soil health, and some of the beneficials we use to manage Plant Health, reduce disease and pest pressures, increase drought tolerance - AND SO MUCH MORE! Soil & soilless media is clearly the foundation for plants' growth, but the importance goes so far beyond fertilizers & NPK - it is essentially a whole other world living beneath our feet that give us the foundation for life as we know it!
What kind of soil media are you growing in this year?
Have you tried making your own?
What are some amendments you would recommend to use in the garden?
And if you have questions about ANYTHING we talked about - call into the station (if you listen on Anchor) or drop us a comment & we'll address it in a future podcast!
Joining us for another episode is Tori Bruns from Mustard Seed Farm Market, who is also a fellow Merchandiser at AM Leonard, with me. This time we talk about seed starting tips, tricks, and some of the supplies we are using or plan to use from propagation to transplant. Seed starting & propagation is our main topic but we also touch on soil health, fertilizers & beneficials, and some of the mistakes we've made in the past that you can learn from.
If you have questions you want answered, leave a comment OR call in to the station (if you're using Anchor) - would love to hear your gardening questions & stories!
New Year's Resolutions never die with me & this year I'm taking accountability to a whole new level with monthly check-ins. I talk about the progress on my goals of weight loss, fitness, saving money, and making progress with my gardening business.
When I first saw Facebook's Portal I was pretty cynical about it. But my feelings have changed as I have travelled on this vlogging journey from filming to editing, and simply realizing the vast amount of time and effort that is spent on the whole process - that's when I realized that Facebook Portal was the answer to that creative conundrum. In this podcast I rant about how the Portal needs to be modified and marketed, but I go down some really interesting paths about how the Portal is only the beginning of pulling people further into the Facebook platform & ecosystem of companies it owns like WhatsApp, Instagram, Marketplace. I think the current version of the Portal is only the beginning of a huge shift in the way we deal with social media platforms.
Time and organization have been 2 concepts that I've been obsessed with this year. When your dreams outgrow the hours available in the day, then you have to get organized, develop a plan 🧭 and attack 👊 Hope you enjoy this quick little rant 🌱💪
In honor of National CSA Day, I did a podcast with another local grower, Tori Bruns who runs Mustard Seed Farm Market in McCartyville, OH. She's growing on a much larger scale than I am with 2 high tunnels, an acre of sweet corn, and an acre of pumpkins. In this episode we dive into her origin story & how she got started farming, what a CSA is, what we're currently growing, and a ton of other stuff about growing fruits & vegetables and our plans for the year.
Today is National CSA Day because it is the last Friday of the month of February. That's usually the time that people are finalizing their CSA customer list so that they can plan what to grow for the coming season.
Hope you enjoy the podcast & feel free to drop us a comment with any questions & we'll be happy to answer them.
If you live in northern Shelby County & are looking for fresh veggies this summer you can find Tori's farm @mustardseedfarmmarket on Instagram & Facebook or sign up on her website at https://www.mustardseedfarmohio.com/

I just got out of a wild goose chase at Menard's for sockets for my grow lights but came up empty and brought home another grow rack that will fit in the closet and triple our production in that area up to 21 tray spaces💡🌱💡🌱💡. I also talk about my plans for cleaning up the garden & how to prune raspberry bushes. I cant wait to get growing and put everything I have into the garden this year. Organization and efficiency is at the heart of my mission this year - mix that with passion & hard work and you have a recipe for success!
I found, I mean MADE, time for this quick podcast on my way home from lunch. Start off talking about my weight lifting plans, how I fit working out into my schedule, and why "finding time" is just an excuse to not execute. Enjoy!
This is the first podcast I've ever done with another person & who better than my lifelong friend Tyler Gutman, aka Romo Loco. On the podcast we begin by talking about the Origin stories of our names, both "Romo Loco" & "Gardening 4 Gains", then we talk more in-depth about gardening, permaculture, and Tyler's journey into the jungles of the Amazon.
For this being our first attempt, I feel like we really got into a groove, went off on tangents in every possible direction with topics ranging from bodybuilding, fitness, nutrition, the "ideal" health, and politics.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the topics we dove into - drop your perspective down below in the comments section!

This was from a video I filmed at the beginning of the year right after I began vlogging. In this podcast I talk about a funny story of taking our dog Basil to the vet, then I go into talking about vlogging. I touch on the challenges & time it takes to adapt and retrain your mind into a different way of thinking. We have been told how bad social media is, but I think that vlogging shows the good that resides in these platforms - and that's exactly what it's all about - Platforms. You have a platform to speak your truths, to tell your life story, and most importantly to me - you have the chance to be the Matriarch or Patriarch of your family tree. When you look back at your family history you may have a few pictures of great-grandparents, but think about the endless amounts of content our great-great-great grandchildren will have from us! If you want to, you can be the start of your digital family tree & hundreds of years from now your ancestors will be tracking you down - you'll be the earliest relative they can find with an overwhelming amount of posts, tweets, videos - whatever you want to create & be remembered by: true Legacy.
Most people forget about their Resolutions in the first 2 weeks of January, but I'm still going strong & working to hold myself accountable to the goals I set for myself!
In this episode I dive into my Resolutions which fell into 5 main categories: Fitness, Nutrition, Economics, Gardening, and Social & Marketing.
Listen in to learn how I lost 12 pounds in 5 weeks including my tips & tactics that play into those other areas that I selected as my Resolution categories.
Did you make resolutions?
How are they going?
What do you want to accomplish in 2019?
This is my biggest issue when it comes to content creation - or anything in life really! Pondering the potential outcomes of your actions is important to assess your impact & relevance, but if you're only thinking - you aren't doing 🤾♂️
In this episode we get back to the goal of beginning the day with positive affirmations & goals by talking about the thing that has been a bottleneck to my content creation slump. Sometimes the only way to move forward - is to move forward. What motivates you to keep doing what you're doing? What lights your 🔥?
They say that you find what you're looking for. I was digging deep on this episode to expose some truths about myself & my perception of reality. Like Happiness - you can search & search all you want, but the fact of the matter is that Happiness isn't something that you find - it's something that you do; something that you create. Enjoy this little piece of my soul - a true rant where I feel that I unleashed a little more than usual. Enjoy & feel free to call into the station with your thoughts 🙏
On this rant I talk about my mission with Gardening 4 Gains, why I podcast, & what gets me up in the morning. I hope you find some value, entertainment, and motivation - would love to hear your thoughts or gardening questions!
At this stage of the game the goal is to keep everything growing! This episode is a quick intro to the benefits of using mycorrizae and how it helps your plants. We'll see the true results in a few weeks when we transplant our seedlings 🌱🌱🌱
Here's my thoughts & plans with social media. I think that social will continue to evolve and change the landscape of the internet in ways we can't even begin to imagine.
As those changes begin to take place, how are you changing your strategy?
How do you utilize social media for your business or personal brand?
You can't plan out your passions - you just have to do. In this rambling rant I talk about that theme along with the importance of finding your own way rather than following a template to live the life you want. I feel like I got dialed in towards the end of the episode - really enjoying this podcasting thing & pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Would love to hear your thoughts & ideas - call into the station or drop me a comment 🙏 ask me any question and I'll rant about it 😂
I'm looking to transition from random podcasts into providing more gardening/growing value & starting it off with tips to start your Tomato seeds 🌱🍅
Comment below with your tomato & gardening questions and your question could be the next podcast! 🙌🎙
In the last week I have started a new job at AM Leonard and couldn't be happier. I really can't believe the amount of support I'm getting & it's making me triple down on my goals - @ work & in the garden of my life 🙏
Who else is doing the 2018 Flip Challenge? I've been loving the progress, struggles, and anticipation for success! Sales is the most fun thing in the world when you make it a game and friendly competition with a higher purpose
I'm so excited for all the changes that Anchor made to improve the look, feel, and function of the app. No more time limits - praise the Lord! The dog walking and podcasting was a little tough but I love the active meditation - and it can only get better over time!
Today I talk about my short hiatus from the podcast 😪 So many of our actions are predicated on feelings we have created in our heads, rather than being based on facts🤔. This keeps us from acting, creating and thriving. Just do it! 🏋️♂️💪🌱
It's insane to hear these stories about people making hundreds of thousands of dollars on eBay by finding deals and reselling, so that's why I'm joining the 2018 Flip Challenge 🤸♂️ - to see if I can too!
What plans do you have in place to safeguard your resolutions & ensure execution of your goals? 🙏
Here's our take @ Gardening 4 Gains - our inspiration, our motivation, our goals, and a plan to make it happen 🌱🏋️♂️
What drives you to do?
What is stopping you?
Along this journey through life, I've struggled to define my passions because of my fears.
This is a little insight into the history of Gardening for Gains & a glimpse of my moonshot goals 🌝🚀
