Tony Nelson - From US Navy to NZ Teacher
I first met Tony Nelson through an email regarding my Son. You see, Tony is my Son’s maths teacher and we connected during lockdown after I reached out to ask him what I could do at home to better support my kids maths learning.
To be clear - I can educate my kid - in my way - but trying to help him follow a curriculum set by an external body - I am not so sure and that’s why I think we send them to school.
Anyways, Tony sent me a very deep and thoughtful email back with lot’s of heart and caring embedded within it and that’s when my “podcast radar” went off. I tell my podcast guests that I get a feeling about people and that feeling makes me want to talk to them about life and I have long since learned to trust this feeling.
So I asked Tony to visit my place and to go on a voyage of discovery with me about his life and how he sees life. It was so interesting to hear Tony’s journey - especially his weight loss journey as well as his time in the US Navy and his story about moving to New Zealand.

Bruce Howat has lived a life! In fact, Bruce's life is so filled with living that this podcast of 1 hour and 30 mins only covers his story up until the age of about 20 years old. The story you may be familiar with regarding Bruce is when he got stabbed when he was a police dod handler. This conversation pre-dates that horrific moment starting with where Bruce grew up and the building blocks of his journey growing up. On a personal note, this podcast dives into my own journey of wrestling with meaning - from trying to understand the idea of miracles in our modern world and what it means to trust your gut - even though algorithms seem to control a lot of our feelings and urges in modern life. I hope this podcast is interesting for you on your own journey. Roko Babich has had the big lights of city living with the demanding job and never-ending deadline to the still oceans and peaceful background noise of nature in the far north of New Zealand.
