Isn't It Fearless, Don't You Think?
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks about being fearless in your creative process. Inspiration comes from many sources, and Preston cites Larry David, Alanis Morissette, Billie Eilish and Billie Joe Armstrong as some recent sources of both inspiration and reminders to tap into that fearlessness as an artist. Nobody is ever inspired by "playing it safe" or hiding your own humanity when it comes to the arts. Preston reminds us that we are all multi-faceted, rounded, and deep beings that all experience the human condition in our own unique way. Tapping into our own raw experiences and emotions and sharing them fearlessly in our work is what ultimately resonates with people. Listen to this episode for some inspiration to share your own raw, unfiltered experience. For more information on Preston M. Random (Art) Thoughts, with PMS
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston clears the cobwebs out of his brain with some random art world related thoughts. Topics include success as an artist, learning to become a tourist with your pain and darkness, getting into a flow state with your creativity, and showing some character when interacting on social media. All topics were decided during the process of recording this episode and, as always, evolved in the present moment. Hopefully there are a few solid takeaways that can be applied to your art practice. If not, you can at least join in on some word association shenanigans. No!
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks about the importance of saying "no" sometimes in your art career. Everyone wants to be busy and productive with their art and business, but if you have crossed over into the realm of burnout, anxiety, or apathy, maybe it is time to pump the breaks and use this magical word from time to time. Life and art are all about balance and we just can't be saying "yes" to everything at every moment. Preston talks about people pleasing tendencies with himself, and artists in general, and how these can feed the habit of taking on too many tasks, creating chaos and overwhelm in our lives. "No" is a tool that every artist and person should have in their repertoire. For more information on Preston M. Interview with Christina Elizabeth Smith (Amrta)
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks with Los Angeles based artist and actress Christina Elizabeth Smith, aka Amrta. In this super fun and deep conversation, Christina shares her (destined to be made into a movie) origin story that goes from being a military child, through conquering the dancing world as teenager, into her acting and fine art journey in Los Angeles, where she has worked on many noteworthy shows such as NCIS: New Orleans, The Young and The Restless, Days of Our Lives, Paradise Lost, Grey's Anatomy, and more, working alongside Geena Davis, Alan Ruck, and Scott Bakula, to name a few. She shares with Preston many acting anecdotes, talks about her relationship with ShockBoxx gallery, her love of Kintsugi and how it relates to her artwork, her Buddhist practice, the importance of spirituality in her life and work, sharing her passion and personal story with the world, and yes, her dogs! TRIGGER WARNING: Christina does share a very intense traumatic event that happened in her life near the end of the interview, which may not be for the faint of heart. It is however a very important story in her life, journey and art, and something that she hopes will help open a dialogue that can help future survivors and change a system that has sadly failed so many. Buckle up for this wonderful and insightful conversation with Amrta! What's Your Story, Morning Glory?
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston follows up multiple conversations on Clubhouse, with this episode focusing on the importance of telling stories with your art and career. He breaks it down into a handful of different levels of storytelling that range from back stories of the creation of specific art pieces to the stories we tell in building our own mythology as artists. Each type of storytelling has its own place and importance and can be a tremendous tool in getting more exposure, collectors, as well as getting work into shows and competitions. Storytelling can unite us with our viewers and even inspire us to create better work. This is a must listen for anyone who is questioning the merits of storytelling for artists and in the art world. Getting Into The Creative Mindset Quickly
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston discusses the art of creativity within a time constraint. We all experience the madness of life sometimes, but we still need to be able to create our art at our best in the window of time we have. Preston talks about developing the ability to trick your brain into fast-tracking your best creative self during a busy day, or even in a period of creative stagnancy and gives three examples of how he triggers a deep creative state in his own life. Feel free to use these, or any iteration of them in your own life.  For more information on Preston M. Finding Your Market
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks about the importance of finding your market, or niche when showing and selling your work. He gives some examples of how to and how not to do this. He urges that it is not about following trends, but defining your "voice" as an artist first, then finding the people who that voice best resonates with. This could be a specific region of the world (or your city), age group, gender, etc. You will most likely not be everything to everyone, nor should you try to be. Specializing, even a little, can make the difference between having your work be seen and sold, or not.  For more information on Preston M. Casting A Wide Net
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks about his approach to making a living and thriving in the art world. He cautions artists against subscribing to a "one size fits all" approach to their career. Preston goes on to speak to his practice of casting what he calls a "specialized" wide net and diversifying his approach to getting exposure and selling his work. He encourages artists to try different approaches and find the one that works best for them individually. Maybe the best approach is many of them... For more information on Preston M. Break The Pattern
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston puts on his self-help cap and channels his best T-Rob to talk about breaking the patterns that we fall into as artists. This episode is meant to bring awareness to the patterns that we fall into that may cut us off from making progress or finding different avenues to showcase our art. These patterns can be downright negative, or even deceivingly positive. Preston talks about the importance of self-awareness and then gives some examples of how to disrupt a pattern that may be holding you back. For more information on Preston M. Interview with Karey Maurice (featuring Mike Collins)
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston and Mike Collins sit down to interview New Jersey and "Beast Coast" artist Karey Maurice, aka KaMo. This episode is dropping right before two of Karey's exhibitions with ShockBoxx Gallery this and next month; one being a solo show entitled Cones To Bones and the other in the now infamous group exhibition Intergalactic Open 2. Mike joins us to talk about his relationship with KaMo, how these two shows came to be and to add his insights as an artist and gallery owner. This was a fascinating and energetic discussion with Karey, where the artist talks about his origins in the 1980's New York art explosion, and how he engaged with some of the hottest artists on the scene. Some highlights are Keith Haring's mentorship and crash course art world education with Karey, Karey being constantly mistaken for Basquiat, developing his artistic style from an early age, discovering and cultivating his identity, skateboarding, living and working with neuropathy, his upcoming solo show at ShockBoxx, a discussion of having the total package as an artist, visibility in the art world, and so much more. This is a fun, engaging, and deep conversation, with so many nuggets of wisdom for any artist out there. As Karey so eloquently put it on the episode, if you need to find him online, just type his name into Google and everything you need to know will pop up (https://www.google.com)! You can check out some work, info and follow Karey on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/ikareytv. Depression
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston discusses depression. He shares how he has been feeling recently and how it reminds him of a time where he was all alone in Los Angeles, trying to find his way and battle inner demons. During this period, he experienced a strange sickness that heightened the struggles he was going through at the time. At his lowest point, he began writing his first novel, which Preston declares "literally saved my life" and shares a small passage from it, which echoes the mood and struggles he was experiencing at that time. Through creativity and self-expression, along with some lifestyle changes, Preston began to climb out of this hole. Hopefully, this episode will be cathartic and remind you of the power of your art, not only as an expression of self, but as a tool to conquer some of your darkest times. Judgment (Free) Day

With the weight of what is going on in the world now and over this past year, it is easier than ever to fall victim to the judgment, or perceived judgment of others. He gives some perspective on this and then leaves us with a Judgment Free challenge to apply to one day of our lives. One day that will hopefully turn into a practice that will greatly improve your mindset, art and perspective on other artists moving forward. For more information on Preston M. Replenish With These Art Films
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston discusses the importance of replenishing your creativity in our current state of the world. He offers a few art films, both biopics and documentaries, that can help you do just that. With the ongoing pandemic crisis and isolation fatigue, it is important to not only escape from time to time, but to find entertainment that "feeds" our creativity and replenishes the well. The movies discussed in this episode are some of Preston's all-time favorites and are highly re-watchable.  To check out these films for yourself, you can search for Pollock, Basquiat, and Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present. NOTE: This is an impromptu episode where Preston shares his opinions, recollections, and love for these films. Trusting Your Gut
In this episode of The Living Artist, Preston talks about the importance of trusting your instincts. Intuition, the voice inside your head, your gut, your instincts, whatever you want to call it, developing the skill of listening to this is essential to making the right choices in your art career. Preston provides a few examples from his own life of when he was able to listen to his own gut, as well as fall victim to his one rationalizations. Objectivity, taking time to think, playing the long game, quieting desperation, and learning from past experiences are all ways that we can get better at honing this skill.
